14. Design of light-gauge steel shear walls sheathed with thin steel plates

Abstract

A problem related to the design of sheathed light-gauge steel walls for earthquake or wind (i.e. shear) is the lack of analytical methods for the evaluation of the capacity and rigidity of the walls. Tests can be performed for a particular configuration of wall and the experimental results can be used. However, such an approach has limitations because designers need to use configurations which are already tested. In this article an analytical design methodology is presented for light-gauge steel shear walls sheathed with flat thin steel plates. Procedures take into account the fixing of the steel plate to the skeleton and are developed for the evaluation of the load bearing capacity and rigidity of the wall. The results are compared to results from Finite Element Models (FEM) and experiments. The conclusion is that the procedure has good accuracy for the evaluation of the load bearing capacity, but not sufficient for the calculation of the rigidity.

Abstract

Despite de fact that the Danube Delta has a great biodiversity with more than 2300 plants and more than 4000 animals registered (http://www.ddbra.ro/rezervatia/deltadunarii/biodiversitate), the study of macromycetes is rather scanty, and the number of macromycetes species found so far in the Reserve is 58. As a result of the mycological investigations done by the authors in 2016 May 7-8 and October 21-22 in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve in the Letea Forest, Caraorman Forest and at the forest district’s former premises near C.A. Rosetti, the list of the recorded 130 species is presented, out of which 110 species are documented for the first time in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve (DDBR). The number of the macrofungi species that occur in the formentioned Reserve - including the buffer zone from Enisala - has grown to 168. Based on the red list of the romanian macromycetes (Tănase and Pop, 2005) we have found three species in the near threatened category (NT): Helvella acetabulum, Morchella esculenta and Pluteus petasatus, and one species in the vulnerable category (VU): Myriostoma coliforme. A short survey from 1932 to 2012 about the former mycological studies concerning the DDBR is presented, and the nomenclaturally updated list of the 38 species not found by us, but present in the DDBR is given.

Abstract

QT interval prolongation on the electrocardiogram is considered a precursory sign for imminent, potentially lethal ventricular arrhythmias. Beside the inherited condition of long QT syndrome, numerous drugs, certain electrolyte disturbances and early transmural ischemia have been identified to induce reversible prolongation of the QT interval, collectively called as acquired long QT syndrome. Herein we describe a case of a patient with transient QT prolongation and Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, a rather infrequent cause of long QT development. Serial changes of the repolarization pattern were documented to demonstrate progression and resolution of the abnormal QT interval.

39. Assessment of reusability of components from single-storey steel buildings

Abstract

This paper presents the development of the method for prediction of reusability of building components and whole structures. The method was developed especially for single-storey steel buildings, but can be applied with some modifications for any component (or cluster of components) reclaimed from a demolished or refur-bished building. It enables classification of various building parts and products through a procedure to calcu-late their reusability index. These values can be further used to produce a single reusability indicator of the whole end-of-life scenario (e.g. the complete or partial building reuse). The aggregated result of the whole building may be very useful in planning of demolition or reconstruction works as well as for the assessment of the environmental impact of the new buildings. The main novelty explored in this paper is the possibility of in-tegrating the economical prospect of the recovered components in the reusability assessment. Indeed, the ear-lier developed reusability index was purely based on the technical requirements of recovering, remanufactur-ing and reusing component. Hence, it was a technical reusability indicator. The added element here is the pos-sibility to include information on the prospective marketability of the recovered component. The methodology is benchmarked on a suite of single-storey hall type structures of different structural configuration.

Abstract

This article focuses on a study related to the effect of experimental gonadectomy and reverse hormone substitution on hemorheological factors. Altered or lost gonad function may cause severe problems in hemostasis as well as in blood rheological factors. Gonadectomy and the consequential sex-hormone less state differentially affect the hemostaseological and hemorheological factors. Reverse hormone substitution causes larger disturbing effect on certain parameters, but not equivalently in males and females.
