Abstract

This paper is a survey of two kinds of "compressed" proof schemes, the \emph{matrix method} and \emph{proof nets}, as applied to a variety of logics ranging along the substructural hierarchy from classical all the way down to the nonassociative Lambek system. A novel treatment of proof nets for the latter is provided. Descriptions of proof nets and matrices are given in a uniform notation based on sequents, so that the properties of the schemes for the various logics can be easily compared.

6. A Unified Theory of Time-Frequency Reassignment

Abstract

Time-frequency representations such as the spectrogram are commonly used to analyze signals having a time-varying distribution of spectral energy, but the spectrogram is constrained by an unfortunate tradeoff between resolution in time and frequency. A method of achieving high-resolution spectral representations has been independently introduced by several parties. The technique has been variously named reassignment and remapping, but while the implementations have differed in details, they are all based on the same theoretical and mathematical foundation. In this work, we present a brief history of work on the method we will call the method of time-frequency reassignment, and present a unified mathematical description of the technique and its derivation. Abstract

The reassigned spectrogram (RS) has emerged as the most accurate way to infer vocal tract resonances from the acoustic signal [Shadle, Nam, and Whalen (2016). "Comparing measurement errors for formants in synthetic and natural vowels," J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 139(2), 713–727]. To date, validating its accuracy has depended on formant synthesis for ground truth values of these resonances. Synthesis is easily controlled, but it has many intrinsic assumptions that do not necessarily accurately realize the acoustics in the way that physical resonances would. Here, we show that physical models of the vocal tract with derivable resonance values allow a separate approach to the ground truth, with a different range of limitations. Our three-dimensional printed vocal tract models were excited by white noise, allowing an accurate determination of the resonance frequencies. Then, sources with a range of fundamental frequencies were implemented, allowing a direct assessment of whether RS avoided the systematic bias towards the nearest strong harmonic to which other analysis techniques are prone. RS was indeed accurate at fundamental frequencies up to 300 Hz; above that, accuracy was somewhat reduced. Future directions include testing mechanical models with the dimensions of children's vocal tracts and making RS more broadly useful by automating the detection of resonances. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

20. Unsupervised Learning of Morphology without Morphemes

Abstract

The first morphological learner based upon the theory of Whole Word Morphology Ford et al. (1997) is outlined, and preliminary evaluation results are presented. The program, Whole Word Morphologizer, takes a POS-tagged lexicon as input, induces morphological relationships without attempting to discover or identify morphemes, and is then able to generate new words beyond the learning sample. The accuracy (precision) of the generated new words is as high as 80% using the pure Whole Word theory, and 92% after a post-hoc adjustment is added to the routine., Comment: 10 pages, to appear in Proceedings of the Workshop on Morphological and Phonological Learning 2002, ACL Publications

Abstract

Phonological accounts of American English [Labov, W. et al. (2006) The Atlas of North American English, Berlin: Walter de Gruyter] rely on historical and phonotactic analysis to categorize the vowels as either long (two morae) or short (one mora). The vowels of beat, bait, boot, boat, bought, bite, bout, boy are traditionally identified as long, while bit, bet, bat, book, but, bot are supposedly short. It is a reasonable question whether these vowels are indeed longer and shorter, respectively, in phonetic duration. A study of “General American” [Rositzke, H.A. (1939) “Vowel-length in General American speech,” Language15(2):99-109] examined the durations of the vowels of 5 subjects in scripted utterances, without controlling for dialect. The findings were mostly in accord with the above categories, with the exceptions that [æ, ɑ] (bat, bot) were both phonetically long. The present study is an effort to replicate Rositzke’s on 341,425 vowel tokens in the Buckeye Corpus of conversational English (40 speakers from Columbus, Ohio). The results essentially confirm that the vowels [æ, ɑ] (bat, bot) are phonetically as long as the traditional ‘long’ vowels. This situation calls the traditional analysis of American English vowel length into question. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
