Astrophysics - Solar and Stellar Astrophysics - Abstract
Context. Thanks to the high-precision photometry from space missions such as Kepler and TESS, tidal perturbations and tilting of pulsations have been detected in more than a dozen binary systems. However, only two of these were g-mode pulsators. Aims. We aim to detect tidally perturbed g modes in additional binary systems and characterise them observationally. Methods. We perform a custom data reduction of the available Kepler and TESS photometry of a well-studied sample of 35 binary systems with gamma Doradus pulsators. For each target, we model the binary signal using a sum of 100 sine waves, with frequencies at orbital harmonics, and measure significant pulsation frequencies by iteratively prewhitening the residual light curve. Pulsations are labelled as tidally perturbed g modes if they are part of both period-spacing patterns and orbital-frequency-spaced multiplets. After visual inspection and confirmation, the properties of these targets and g modes are characterised. Results. We detect tidally perturbed g-mode pulsations for five short-period binaries that are circularised and (almost) synchronously rotating: KIC3228863, KIC3341457, KIC4947528, KIC9108579, and KIC12785282. Tidally perturbed g modes that occur within the same star and have the same mode identification (k,m), are found to have near-identical relative amplitude and phase modulations, which are within their respective 1-sigma uncertainties also identical for the Kepler and TESS photometric passbands. By contrast, pulsations with different mode identification (k,m) are found to exhibit different modulations. Moreover, the observed amplitude and phase modulations are correlated, indicating that the binary tides primarily distort g-mode amplitudes on the stellar surface. The phase modulations are then primarily a geometric effect of the integration of the stellar flux over the visible stellar surface. (abbreviated), Comment: 21 pages, 33 figures, 2 tables. Astrophysics - Solar and Stellar Astrophysics - Abstract
We report the discovery of the third tidally tilted pulsator, TIC 63328020. Observations with the TESS satellite reveal binary eclipses with an orbital period of 1.1057 d, and $\delta$ Scuti-type pulsations with a mode frequency of 21.09533 d$^{-1}$. This pulsation exhibits a septuplet of orbital sidelobes as well as a harmonic quintuplet. Using the oblique pulsator model, the primary oscillation is identified as a sectoral dipole mode with $l = 1, |m| = 1$. We find the pulsating star to have $M_1 \simeq 2.5\, {\rm M}_\odot$, $R_1 \simeq 3 \, {\rm R}_\odot$, and $T_{\rm eff,1} \simeq 8000$ K, while the secondary has $M_2 \simeq 1.1 \, {\rm M}_\odot$, $R_2 \simeq 2 \, {\rm R}_\odot$, and $T_{\rm eff,2} \simeq 5600$ K. Both stars appear to be close to filling their respective Roche lobes. The properties of this binary as well as the tidally tilted pulsations differ from the previous two tidally tilted pulsators, HD74423 and CO Cam, in important ways. We also study the prior history of this system with binary evolution models and conclude that extensive mass transfer has occurred from the current secondary to the primary., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, and 8 tables

Astrophysics - Solar and Stellar Astrophysics - Abstract
A new class of pulsating binary stars was recently discovered, whose pulsation amplitudes are strongly modulated with orbital phase. Stars in close binaries are tidally distorted, so we examine how a star's tidally induced asphericity affects its oscillation mode frequencies and eigenfunctions. We explain the pulsation amplitude modulation via tidal mode coupling such that the pulsations are effectively confined to certain regions of the star, e.g., the tidal pole or the tidal equator. In addition to a rigorous mathematical formalism to compute this coupling, we provide a more intuitive semi-analytic description of the process. We discuss three resulting effects: 1. Tidal alignment, i.e., the alignment of oscillation modes about the tidal axis rather than the rotation axis; 2. Tidal trapping, e.g., the confinement of oscillations near the tidal poles or the tidal equator; 3. Tidal amplification, i.e., increased flux perturbations near the tidal poles where acoustic modes can propagate closer to the surface of the star. Together, these phenomena can account for the pulsation amplitude and phase modulation of the recently discovered class of "tidally tilted pulsators." We compare our theory to the three tidally tilted pulsators HD 74423, CO Cam, and TIC 63328020, finding that tidally trapped modes that are axisymmetric about the tidal axis can largely explain the first two, while a non-axisymmetric tidally aligned mode is present in the latter. Finally, we discuss implications and limitations of the theory, and we make predictions for the many new tidally tilted pulsators likely to be discovered in the near future., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS, comments welcome. Astrophysics - Solar and Stellar Astrophysics - Abstract
CO~Cam (TIC 160268882) is the second ``single-sided pulsator'' to be discovered. These are stars where one hemisphere pulsates with a significantly higher amplitude than the other side of the star. CO~Cam is a binary star comprised of an Am $\delta$~Sct primary star with $T_{\rm eff} = 7070 \pm 150$\,K, and a spectroscopically undetected G main-sequence secondary star. The dominant pulsating side of the primary star is centred on the L$_1$ point. We have modelled the spectral energy distribution combined with radial velocities, and independently the {\em TESS} light curve combined with radial velocities. Both of these give excellent agreement and robust system parameters for both stars. The $\delta$~Sct star is an oblique pulsator with at least four low radial overtone (probably) f~modes with the pulsation axis coinciding with the tidal axis of the star, the line of apsides. Preliminary theoretical modelling indicates that the modes must produce much larger flux perturbations near the L$_1$ point, although this is difficult to understand because the pulsating star does not come near to filling its Roche lobe. More detailed models of distorted pulsating stars should be developed. These newly discovered single-sided pulsators offer new opportunities for astrophysical inference from stars that are oblique pulsators in close binary stars., Comment: 18 pages, 18 figures

Astrophysics - Solar and Stellar Astrophysics - Abstract
It has long been suspected that tidal forces in close binary stars could modify the orientation of the pulsation axis of the constituent stars. Such stars have been searched for, but until now never detected. Here we report the discovery of tidally trapped pulsations in the ellipsoidal variable HD 74423 in TESS space photometry data. The system contains a Delta Scuti pulsator in a 1.6-d orbit, whose pulsation mode amplitude is strongly modulated at the orbital frequency, which can be explained if the pulsations have a much larger amplitude in one hemisphere of the star. We interpret this as an obliquely pulsating distorted dipole oscillation with a pulsation axis aligned with the tidal axis. This is the first time that oblique pulsation along a tidal axis has been recognized. It is unclear whether the pulsations are trapped in the hemisphere directed towards the companion or in the side facing away from it, but future spectral measurements can provide the solution. In the meantime, the single-sided pulsator HD 74423 stands out as the prototype of a new class of obliquely pulsating stars in which the interactions of stellar pulsations and tidal distortion can be studied., Comment: Accepted for Nature Astronomy

Astrophysics - Solar and Stellar Astrophysics - Abstract
$\varepsilon$ Lupi A is a binary system consisting of two main sequence early B-type stars Aa and Ab in a short period, moderately eccentric orbit. The close binary pair is the only doubly-magnetic massive binary currently known. Using photometric data from the BRITE-Constellation we identify a modest heartbeat variation. Combining the photometry with radial velocities of both components we determine a full orbital solution including empirical masses and radii. These results are compared with stellar evolution models as well as interferometry and the differences discussed. We also find additional photometric variability at several frequencies, finding it unlikely these frequencies can be caused by tidally excited oscillations. We do, however, determine that these signals are consistent with gravity mode pulsations typical for slowly pulsating B stars. Finally we discuss how the evolution of this system will be affected by magnetism, determining that tidal interactions will still be dominant., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

Mathematics - Optimization and Control - Abstract
Generation expansion planning (GEP) models have been useful aids for long-term planning. Recent growth in intermittent renewable generation has increased the need to represent the capability for non-renewables to respond to rapid changes in daily loads, leading research to bring unit commitment (UC) features into GEPs. Such GEP+UC models usually contain discrete variables which, along with many details, make computation times impractically long for analysts who need to develop, debug, modify and use the GEP for many alternative runs. We propose a GEP with generation aggregated by technology type, and with the minimal UC content necessary to represent the limitations on generation to respond to rapid changes in demand, i.e., ramp-up and ramp-down constraints, with ramp limits estimated from historical data on maximum rates of change of each generation type. We illustrate with data for the province of Ontario in Canada; the GEP is a large scale linear program that solves in less than one hour on modest computing equipment, with credible solutions.

Economics - General Economics - Abstract
This paper finds near equilibrium prices for electricity markets with nonconvexities due to binary variables, in order to reduce the market participants' opportunity costs, such as generators' unrecovered costs. The opportunity cost is defined as the difference between the profit when the instructions of the market operator are followed and when the market participants can freely make their own decisions based on the market prices. We use the minimum complementarity approximation to the minimum total opportunity cost (MTOC) model, from previous research, with tests on a much more realistic unit commitment (UC) model than in previous research, including features such as reserve requirements, ramping constraints, and minimum up and down times. The developed model incorporates flexible price responsive demand, as in previous research, but since not all demand is price responsive, we consider the more realistic case that total demand is a mixture of fixed and flexible. Another improvement over previous MTOC research is computational: whereas the previous research had nonconvex terms among the objective function's continuous variables, we convert the objective to an equivalent form that contains only linear and convex quadratic terms in the continuous variables. We compare the unit commitment model with the standard social welfare optimization version of UC, in a series of sensitivity analyses, varying flexible demand to represent varying degrees of future penetration of electric vehicles and smart appliances, different ratios of generation availability, and different values of transmission line capacities to consider possible congestion. The minimum total opportunity cost and social welfare solutions are mostly very close in different scenarios, except in some extreme cases.

Astrophysics - Solar and Stellar Astrophysics - Abstract
Context. While rotation has a major impact on stellar structure and evolution, its effects are not well understood. Thanks to high- quality and long timebase photometric observations obtained with recent space missions, we are now able to study stellar rotation more precisely. Aims. We aim to constrain radial differential rotation profiles in gamma Doradus (gamma Dor) stars, and to develop new theoretical seismic diagnosis for such stars with rapid and potentially non-uniform rotation. Methods. We derive a new asymptotic description which accounts for the impact of weak differential near-core rotation on gravity- mode period spacings. The theoretical predictions are illustrated from pulsation computations with the code GYRE and compared with observations of gamma Dor stars. When possible, we also derive the surface rotation rates in these stars by detecting and analysing signatures of rotational modulation, and compute the core-to-surface rotation ratios. Results. Stellar rotation has to be strongly differential before its effects on period spacing patterns can be detected, unless multiple period spacing patterns can be compared. Six stars in our sample exhibit a single unexplained period spacing pattern of retrograde modes. We hypothesise that these are Yanai modes. Finally, we find signatures of rotational spot modulation in the photometric data of eight targets. Conclusions. If only one period spacing pattern is detected and analysed for a star, it is difficult to detect differential rotation. A rigidly rotating model will often provide the best solution. Differential rotation can only be detected when multiple period spacing patterns have been found for a single star or its surface rotation rate is known as well. This is the case for eight stars in our sample, revealing surface-to-core rotation ratios between 0.95 and 1.05., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures. Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics
