Both solute-segregated long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) structure and stacking faults (SFs) are essential in strengthening rare-earth (RE) Mg alloys. Herein, LPSO-enriched Mg and SFs-enriched Mg are fabricated and comparably investigated for fatigue performances. During fatigue, the Mg nanolayers between LPSO lamellae or SFs act as the gliding channels of dislocations. However, SFs-enriched Mg exhibits outstanding fatigue strength due to solute strengthening within Mg nanolayers. Solute strengthening is assumed to contribute to the local accumulation of basal dislocations and the activation of non-basal dislocations. Dislocations are restricted locally and cannot glide long distances to specimen surfaces, which mitigates fatigue-induced extrusions and slip markings, ultimately leading to an increase in fatigue strength. These findings guide the development of RE-Mg alloys towards a synergy between high tensile and high fatigue performances.

This article examines the relationship between patent foramen ovale (PFO) and migraine, emphasizing the mechanisms underlying the connection and the historical status of transcatheter PFO closure as a treatment for migraine. Patent foramen ovale is the most prevalent congenital cardiac defect in adults and frequently co-occurs with migraine, particularly migraine with aura. This article reviews several studies that have identified a significant prevalence of PFO in patients with migraine, implying that PFO and migraine may be more closely associated than previously thought. The underlying mechanisms of this association involve the transfer of emboli from the venous system to systemic circulation through the PFO, which can result in a range of clinical conditions. Transcatheter PFO closure therapy has demonstrated benefits in some patients with migraine; however, additional research is required to determine its effectiveness and safety. This article offers a comprehensive review of the current understanding of the link between PFO and migraine and emphasizes the need for further research in this field.

Abstract Geographical indications (GIs) embody distinctive regional elements characterized by widespread spatial distribution, serving as vital agricultural intellectual properties and significant tourism assets. This case study introduces a multiscale and multi-perspective quantification framework for Shandong Province, focusing on spatial agglomeration, association, and heterogeneity. This approach quantitatively explores GIs’ spatial patterns and influencing mechanisms, analyzing both at the monomer and regional scales, considering static and dynamic perspectives. Leveraging methods such as kernel density analysis, Moran’s I index, Geary’s C index, Internet hot word analysis, and Geodetector, the coastal municipalities, prosperous urban areas, and zones with high-quality arable soils were identified as spatial agglomeration areas for GIs. The study revealed a strong correlation between the spatial distribution pattern of socioeconomic factors and GIs’ spatial density from a static perspective. However, diminished spatial autocorrelation was observed for GIs’ public perception from a dynamic standpoint, indicating a reduced influence of Internet connectivity. The spatial heterogeneity in GIs is determined by multiple interconnected factors, displaying an enhancement effect between any two influencing factors. Among the 15 influencing factors analyzed, urbanization rate; gross value of agricultural, forestry, animal husbandry, and fishery production; and per capita gross domestic product significantly contribute to spatial heterogeneity effects at both urbanization rate, gross value of agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, fishery production, and per capita gross domestic product significantly contributed to spatial heterogeneity effects at regional and monomer scales. The results suggest that GIs are likely to flourish with regional economic growth. The analytical framework and quantification methods support exploring and sustainably utilizing GIs, improving output quality, and modernizing GIs’ production, ultimately contributing to regional agriculture’s high-quality and sustainable development.

Abstract Background Language delay affects near- and long-term social communication and learning in toddlers, and, an increasing number of experts pay attention to it. The development of prosody discrimination is one of the earliest stages of language development in which key skills for later stages are mastered. Therefore, analyzing the relationship between brain discrimination of speech prosody and language abilities may provide an objective basis for the diagnosis and intervention of language delay. Methods In this study, all cases(n = 241) were enrolled from a tertiary women’s hospital, from 2021 to 2022. We used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to assess children’s neural prosody discrimination abilities, and a Chinese communicative development inventory (CCDI) were used to evaluate their language abilities. Results Ninety-eight full-term and 108 preterm toddlers were included in the final analysis in phase I and II studies, respectively. The total CCDI screening abnormality rate was 9.2% for full-term and 34.3% for preterm toddlers. Full-term toddlers showed prosody discrimination ability in all channels except channel 5, while preterm toddlers showed prosody discrimination ability in channel 6 only. Objective Icotinib has been approved for adjuvant treatment of stage II–IIIA non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with activating epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations in China, yet the long-term costs and outcomes of this strategy are unknown. Thus, we examined the cost effectiveness of adjuvant icotinib, compared with adjuvant chemotherapy, for the treatment of resected stage II–IIIA EGFR-mutated NSCLC.Design We performed a cost-effectiveness analysis from the perspective of the Chinese healthcare system, comparing 2-year adjuvant icotinib with four cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy. Costs and quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) were estimated using a Markov model. Model inputs were obtained from local data and literature. The influence of model parameters and assumptions was explored in sensitivity analyses. All costs are expressed in 2022 US dollars, and costs and QALYs were discounted at a rate of 5% per year. The willingness-to-pay (WTP) threshold was set at three times the per capita gross domestic product.Setting The Chinese healthcare system perspective.Participants A hypothetical Chinese cohort of patients with resected stage II–IIIA EGFR-mutated NSCLC.Interventions Icotinib versus chemotherapy.Primary outcome measure Costs, QALYs, incremental cost-effectiveness ratio.Results The incremental cost per QALY gained with the use of 2-year icotinib, from the Chinese healthcare system perspective, was $3440.66 compared with adjuvant chemotherapy. At a WTP threshold of $40 500, adjuvant icotinib was the optimal treatment in over 99% of replications. The interpretation of the results was insensitive to model and input assumptions.Conclusions Compared with adjuvant chemotherapy, adjuvant icotinib may be a cost-effective treatment for resected stage II–IIIA EGFR-mutated NSCLC as the WTP threshold is set at $40 500 per QALY.

Eddy current sensors are increasingly being used to measure the dynamic blade tip clearance in turbines due to their robust anti-interference capabilities and non-contact measurement advantages. However, the current research primarily focuses on enhancing the performance of eddy current sensors themselves, with few studies investigating the influence of turbine rotor parameters on the measurements taken by these sensors for dynamic blade tip clearance. Hence, this paper addresses this gap by using COMSOL Multiphysics 6.2 software to establish a finite model with circuit interfaces. Additionally, the model’s validity was verified through experiments. This model is used to simulate the voltage output of the sensor and the measurement of dynamic blade tip clearance under various rotor parameters. The results indicate that the length and number of blades, as well as the hub radius, significantly affect the sensor voltage output in comparison to rotation speed. Furthermore, we show that traditional static calibration methods are inadequate for measuring dynamic blade tip clearance using eddy current sensors. Instead, it is demonstrated that incorporating rotor parameters into the calibration of eddy current sensors can enhance the accuracy of dynamic blade tip clearance measurements.

Given the increasing application of eddy current sensors for measuring turbine tip clearance in aero engines, enhancing the performance of these sensors is essential for improving measurement accuracy. This study investigates the influence of coil shape on the measurement performance of planar eddy current sensors and identifies an optimal coil shape to enhance sensing capabilities. To achieve this, various coil shapes—specifically circular, square, rectangular wave, and triangular wave—were designed and fabricated, featuring different numbers of turns for the experiment at room temperature. By employing a method for calculating coil inductance, the performance of each sensor was evaluated based on key metrics: measurement range, sensitivity, and linearity. Experimental results reveal that the square coil configuration outperforms other shapes in overall measurement performance. Notably, the square coil demonstrated a measurement range of 0 mm to 8 mm, a sensitivity of 0.115685 μH/mm, and an impressive linearity of 98.41% within the range of 0 mm to 2 mm. These findings indicate that the square coil configuration enhances measurement capabilities. The conclusions drawn from this study provide valuable insights for selecting coil shapes and optimizing the performance of planar eddy current sensors, thereby contributing to the advancement of turbine tip clearance measurement techniques in aero engines.

ObjectivesThis paper aims to cope with the possible impact of external condition disturbances on the operating parameters of a supercritical carbon dioxide (S-CO2) Brayton cycle power generation system and ensure its efficient, safe and stable operation. MethodsA dynamic numerical simulation model of a simple S-CO2 Brayton cycle power generation system is built using the Matlab/Simulink platform, and the transient operation characteristics of the system are analyzed. The change laws of the operating parameters of the thermodynamic cycle system under changing cooler parameters are then simulated, and the influence of the temperature fluctuation of the cooling source on the inlet and outlet parameters of the system components, system cycle efficiency and adjustment methods are analyzed. ResultsThe results show that the maximum error between the established system transient simulation model results and the experimental results is 3.658%; a 2 K increase in the cooling water temperature will lead to a 1.4 K increase in the compressor inlet temperature, and the system will need 300 s to restore stability; after adding a PID control system, the compressor inlet temperature change amplitude is reduced by 50% and the system stabilization time is reduced by 62%. ConclusionsThe established model can accurately reflect the operation of the system. Based on the opposition of the influence of cooling water temperature increase and flow increase on the system, the proposed PID control system can ensure that the carbon dioxide working fluid in the system is always above the critical point, thereby ensuring the safe and stable operation of the system.

Electron beam welding (EBW) is suitable for joining titanium alloys. However, the utilization of EBW leads to an uneven microstructure within the weldment due to the rapid solidification and non-uniform temperature gradients, which results in the formation of coarse columnar β grains, ghost α phases, and metastable martensite α/α′ phases, decreasing the mechanical properties. Post-welded heat treatment (PWHT) is a practical method of enhancing mechanical properties by changing the phase composition and grain size. PWHT can promote decomposition and recrystallization of the metastable martensite α/α′ phase in the fusion zone (FZ) and heat-affected zone (HAZ), creating dense nanoscale acicular α phases to build α+β colonies. As the holding time and temperature increase, the thickness and spacing of the acicular α phases increase. The increase in acicular α phases thickness and spacing has a more significant impact on the nanohardness but a lesser effect on the microhardness. Optimal PWHT is 630 °C for 2 h, followed by air cooling, which promotes the precipitation of dense nanoscale acicular α phases in the columnar β grains and ghost α phases, resulting in fine-grain strengthening effect, thereby greatly enhancing the mechanical properties of the welded joint with a tensile strength of 1053.8 MPa, an elongation of 14.33%, and a fracture at the base metal (BM). Moreover, due to the formation of dense nanoscale acicular α phases, more grain boundaries are generated, which hinder the dislocation movement, so that the localized strain in the FZ and HAZ is much lower than that in the BM.

IntroductionInhibition control, as the core component of executive function, might play a crucial role in the understanding of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and specific learning disorders (SLD). Inhibition control deficits have been observed in children with ADHD or SLD. This study sought to test in a multi-modal fashion (i.e., behavior and plus brain imaging) whether inhibition control abilities would be further deteriorated in the ADHD children due to the comorbidity of SLD.MethodA total number of 90 children (aged 6-12 years) were recruited, including 30 ADHD, 30 ADHD+SLD (children with the comorbidity of ADHD and SLD), and 30 typically developing (TD) children. For each participant, a 44-channel functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) equipment was first adopted to capture behavioral and cortical hemodynamic responses during a two-choice Oddball task (a relatively new inhibition control paradigm). Then, 50 metrics were extracted, including 6 behavioral metrics (i.e., OddballACC, baselineACC, totalACC, OddballRT, baselineRT, and totalRT) and 44 beta values in 44 channels based on general linear model. Finally, differences in those 50 metrics among the TD, ADHD, and ADHD+SLD children were analyzed.ResultsFindings showed that: (1) OddballACC (i.e., the response accuracy in deviant stimuli) is the most sensitive metric in identifying the differences between the ADHD and ADHD+SLD children; and (2) The ADHD+SLD children exhibited decreased behavioral response accuracy and brain activation level in some channels (e.g., channel CH35) than both the ADHD and TD children.DiscussionFindings seem to support that inhibition control abilities would be further decreased in the ADHD children due to the comorbidity of SLD.

IntroductionWhile meaningless gross motor imitation (GMI) is a common challenge for children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), this topic has not attracted much attention and few appropriate test paradigms have been developed.MethodsThe current study proposed a wrist rotation imitation (WRI) task (a meaningless GMI assignment), and established a WRI ability evaluation system using low-cost wearable inertial sensors, which acquired the simultaneous data of acceleration and angular acceleration during the WRI task. Three metrics (i.e., total rotation time, rotation amplitude, and symmetry) were extracted from those data of acceleration and angular acceleration, and then were adopted to construct classifiers based on five machine learning (ML) algorithms, including k-nearest neighbors, linear discriminant analysis, naive Bayes, support vector machines, and random forests. To illustrate our technique, this study recruited 49 ASD children (aged 3.5-6.5 years) and 59 age-matched typically developing (TD) children.ResultsFindings showed that compared with TD children, those with ASD may exhibit shorter total rotation time, lower rotation amplitude, and weaker symmetry. This implies that children with ASD might exhibit decreased WRI abilities. The classifier with the naive Bayes algorithm outperformed than other four algorithms, and achieved a maximal classification accuracy of 88% and a maximal AUC value of 0.91. Two metrics (i.e., rotation amplitude and symmetry) had high correlations with the gross and fine motor skills [evaluated by Gesell Developmental Schedules-Third Edition and Psychoeducational Profile-3 (PEP-3)]. While, the three metrics had no significant correlation with the visual-motor imitation abilities (evaluated by the subdomain of PEP-3) and the ASD symptom severity [evaluated by the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS)] .DiscussionThe strengths of this study are associated with the low-cost measurement system, correlation between the WRI metrics and clinical measures, decreased WRI abilities in ASD, and high classification accuracy.

Background: During the process of elongation, the embryo increases in size within the uterus, while the extra-embryonic tissues (EETs) develop and differentiate in preparation for implantation. As it grows, the ovoid embryo transforms into a tubular form first and then a filamentous form. This process is directed by numerous genes and pathways, the expression of which may be altered in the case of developmental irregularities such as when the conceptus is shorter than expected or when the embryo develops after splitting. In bovines, efforts to understand the molecular basis of elongation have employed trophoblastic vesicles (TVs)—short tubular EET pieces that lack an embryo—which also elongate in vivo. To date, however, we lack molecular analyses of TVs at the ovoid or filamentous stages that might shed light on the expression changes involved.Methods: Following in vivo development, we collected bovine conceptuses from the ovoid (D12) to filamentous stages (D18), sectioned them into small pieces with or without their embryonic disc (ED), and then, transferred them to a receptive bovine uterus to assess their elongation abilities. We also grew spherical blastocysts in vitro up to D8 and subjected them to the same treatment. Then, we assessed the differences in gene expression between different samples and fully elongating controls at different stages of elongation using a bovine array (10 K) and an extended qPCR array comprising 224 genes across 24 pathways.Results:In vivo, TVs elongated more or less depending on the stage at which they had been created and the time spent in utero. Their daily elongation rates differed from control EET, with the rates of TVs sometimes resembling those of earlier-stage EET. Overall, the molecular signatures of TVs followed a similar developmental trajectory as intact EET from D12–D18. However, within each stage, TVs and intact EET displayed distinct expression dynamics, some of which were shared with other short epithelial models.Conclusion: Differences between TVs and EET likely result from multiple factors, including a reduction in the length and signaling capabilities of TVs, delayed elongation from inadequate uterine signals, and modified crosstalk between the conceptus and the uterus. These findings confirm that close coordination between uterine, embryonic, and extra-embryonic tissues is required to orchestrate proper elongation and, based on the partial differentiation observed, raise questions about the presence/absence of certain developmental cues or even their asynchronies.

Researchers have begun to investigate the relationship between eye movement characteristics of gaze patterns and cognitive abilities, and have attempted to use eye-tracking technology as a new method to evaluate cognitive abilities. Traditional eye movement analysis methods typically separate spatial and temporal information of eye movements, mostly analyze averaged data, and consider individual differences as noise. In addition, current eye movement studies on gaze patterns mostly involve adults, while research on infants and toddlers is limited with small sample sizes and narrow age ranges. It is still unknown whether the conclusions drawn from adult-based research can be applied to children. Consequently, eye movement research on gaze patterns in children is necessary. To address the concerns stated above, this study used the Hidden Markov machine learning method to model gaze patterns of 330 children aged 1–6 years while observing faces freely, and analyzed characteristics of eye movement gaze patterns. Additionally, we analyzed the correlation between gaze patterns of 31 toddlers aged 1–3 years and 37 preschoolers aged 4–6 years, and the different dimensions of cognitive abilities. The findings indicated that children exhibited holistic and analytic gaze patterns while observing different faces freely. More children adopted a holistic gaze pattern, and there were age-specific gaze pattern characteristics and regularities. Gaze patterns of toddlers may be correlated with their adaptive abilities and gaze patterns of preschoolers may be correlated with their visual space abilities. Specifically, toddlers aged 1–3 years showed a moderate negative correlation between the H-A scale and the adaptive dimension, while preschoolers aged 4–6 years showed a low negative correlation between the H-A scale and the visual space dimension. This study may provide new insights into the characteristics of children’s eye-movement gaze patterns during face observation, and potentially offer objective evidence for future research aimed at promoting the use of eye-tracking technology in the assessment of toddlers’ adaptive abilities and preschoolers’ visual space abilities in the field of face perception.

BackgroundPreeclampsia is a pregnancy-specific disorder that always causes maternal and fetal serious adverse outcome. Disturbances in maternal immune tolerance to embryo at the maternal-fetal interface (MFI) may be associated with preeclampsia onset. Recent studies have revealed the reduced expression pattern of HLA-F at the MFI in preeclampsia, while the mechanism of it mediating maternal fetal immune tolerance has not been revealed.MethodsSingle-cell RNA sequencing on placental decidua was performed to reveal the immune disturbances landscape at the MFI in preeclampsia. Human Jar cells and NK-92MI cells were employed to study the role of HLA-F in trophoblasts and lymphocyte.ResultsA total of 101,250 cells were classified into 22 cell clusters. Disease-related IGFBP1+SPP1+ extracellular villus trophoblast (EVT) was identified in the preeclamptic placental decidua, accompanied by newly discovered immune cellular dysfunction such as reduced ribosomal functions of NK populations and abnormal expression of antigen-presenting molecules in most cell clusters. Certain genes that are characteristic of the intermediate stage of myeloid or EVT cell differentiation were found to have unexplored but important functions in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia; specifically, we detected enhanced cell cross-talk between IGFBP1+SPP1+ EVT2 or SPP1+M1 cells and their receptor cell populations at the MFI of PE patients compared to controls. With respect to HLA-F, mIF staining confirmed its reduced expression in PE samples compared to controls. Over-expression of HLA-F in Jar cells promoted cell proliferation, invasion, and migration while under-expression had the opposite effect. In NK-92MI cells, over-expression of HLA-F increased the secretion of immunoregulation cytokines such as CSF1 and CCL22, and promoted adaptive NKG2C+NK cell transformation.ConclusionsWe revealed the immune disturbance landscape at the MFI in preeclampsia. Our findings regarding cellular heterogeneity and immune cellular dysfunction, as revealed by scRNA-seq, and the function of HLA-F in cells provide new perspectives for further investigation of their roles in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia, and then provide potential new therapeutic target.

The interior defect-induced crack initiation mechanism and early growth behavior of Ti6Al4V alloy fabricated by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) has been investigated in very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) regime. P–S–N curves under 10% and 90% failure probabilities are obtained in VHCF regime. The cracks inside the early stages of fine granular area (FGA) formation are driven by the maximum shear stress and propagate as Mode II + III mixed cracks. It can be found that the FGA region is composed of many discontinuous nanograins for Ti6Al4V alloys manufactured by LPBF, which are responsible for grain refinement. Grain refinement is associated with dislocation movement within the martensite laths. Dislocation pileup and rearrangement in martensitic laths form dislocation cells, which further develop into nanograins and low angle boundaries. Besides, both the fatigue loading process and the LPBF process form their respective microvoids, which merge and aggregate with each other, thus accelerating the microcrack extension.

Ultrasonic fatigue tests are performed on a magnesium alloy with and without ultrasonic peening treatment (UPT). Surface enhancement layer leads to the complete change of crack initiation sites. However, crack initiation mechanism keeps the same and results in a single-faceted morphology at crack initiation site. Microcracks initiate as Mode II crack within the original grain, but deflect to Mode I crack outside of the original cracked grain. A threshold SIF value is proposed to evaluate the retarding effect of grain boundary on microcrack propagation. Outside of the original cracked grain, Mode I crack propagation below the threshold ΔKσ-th is responsible for the formation of fine granular area (FGA, a nano-grain layer). Based on the Numerous Cyclic Pressing (NCP) model, it is proposed that crack type should be another necessary condition for the formation of FGA.

IntroductionAlthough the method of visualizing eye-tracking data as a time-series might enhance performance in the understanding of gaze behavior, it has not yet been thoroughly examined in the context of rapid automated naming (RAN).MethodsThis study attempted, for the first time, to measure gaze behavior during RAN from the perspective of network-domain, which constructed a complex network [referred to as gaze-time-series-based complex network (GCN)] from gaze time-series. Hence, without designating regions of interest, the features of gaze behavior during RAN were extracted by computing topological parameters of GCN. A sample of 98 children (52 males, aged 11.50 ± 0.28 years) was studied. Nine topological parameters (i.e., average degree, network diameter, characteristic path length, clustering coefficient, global efficiency, assortativity coefficient, modularity, community number, and small-worldness) were computed.ResultsFindings showed that GCN in each RAN task was assortative and possessed “small-world” and community architecture. Additionally, observations regarding the influence of RAN task types included that: (i) five topological parameters (i.e., average degree, clustering coefficient, assortativity coefficient, modularity, and community number) could reflect the difference between tasks N-num (i.e., naming of numbers) and N-cha (i.e., naming of Chinese characters); (ii) there was only one topological parameter (i.e., network diameter) which could reflect the difference between tasks N-obj (i.e., naming of objects) and N-col (i.e., naming of colors); and (iii) when compared to GCN in alphanumeric RAN, GCN in non-alphanumeric RAN may have higher average degree, global efficiency, and small-worldness, but lower network diameter, characteristic path length, clustering coefficient, and modularity. Findings also illustrated that most of these topological parameters were largely independent of traditional eye-movement metrics.DiscussionThis article revealed the architecture and topological parameters of GCN as well as the influence of task types on them, and thus brought some new insights into the understanding of RAN from the perspective of complex network.

Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) tests have been well-documented to predict reading abilities as well as a variety of neurobiological disorders (e.g., developmental dyslexia). Traditional measures of RAN tests only take into account the naming time and accuracy and cannot reflect temporal-spatial features during RAN tests. Although the eye tracking approach appears to be a promising tool for characterizing the essential temporal-spatial characteristics of RAN tests, no research has been conducted to investigate whether and how gender, age, and task-type alter those characteristics. Additionally, no study has examined eye movements during a Chinese adaptation of RAN in order to expand the applicability of RAN to developmental dyslexia in Chinese. To address the concerns stated above, this article recruited 408 children (206 males, aged 7–11 years) and adopted eight measures to quantify features of eye movements during a Chinese adaptation of RAN. Findings showed that: (1) eight eye-movement measures had the main effects of task-type and age, but only five of them had the main effect of gender (in particular, females outperformed males); (2) RAN abilities observed by eight eye-movement measures initially developed quickly before the age of 9, and then entered a relatively sluggish development phase; (3) non-alphanumeric RAN tasks generally required higher mental load (implying more fixation counts, saccade counts, and regression counts, smaller average saccade amplitude, fixation duration fluctuation and saccade amplitude fluctuation, and longer average fixation duration and total time of naming) than alphanumeric ones; (4) there were significant correlations between total time of naming (a widely-used behavioral parameter) and other eye-movement measures; and (5) there were significant correlation between eight eye-movement measures and three attention-related skills observed from a number cancellation task. The current study might offer some perspectives on the understanding of normative data of eye movements during RAN in Chinese school-aged children, as well as the applications (e.g., developmental dyslexia) associated with RAN.

Numerous studies have focused on the understanding of rapid automatized naming (RAN), which can be applied to predict reading abilities and developmental dyslexia in children. Eye tracking technique, characterizing the essential ocular activities, might have the feasibility to reveal the visual and cognitive features of RAN. However, traditional measures of eye movements ignore many dynamical details about the visual and cognitive processing of RAN, and are usually associated with the duration of time spent on some particular areas of interest, fixation counts, revisited fixation counts, saccadic velocities, or saccadic amplitudes. To cope with this drawback, we suggested an entropy-based method to measure eye movements for the first time, which first mapped eye movements during RAN in a time-series and then analyzed the time-series by a proper definition of entropy from the perspective of information theory. Our findings showed that the entropy was more sensitive to reflect small perturbation (e.g., rapid movements between focuses in the presence of skipping or omitting some stimulus during RAN) of eye movements, and thus gained better performance than traditional measures. We also verified that the entropy of eye movements significantly deceased with the age and the task complexity of RAN, and significantly correlated with traditional eye-movement measures [e.g., total time of naming (TTN)] and the RAN-related skills [e.g., selective attention (SA), cognitive speed, and visual-motor integration]. Our findings may bring some new insights into the understanding of both RAN and eye tracking technique itself.

Abstract The chemical modification of RNA is a newly discovered epigenetic regulation mechanism in cells and plays a crucial role in a variety of biological processes. N6-methyladenine (m6A) mRNA modification is the most abundant form of posttranscriptional RNA modification in eukaryotes. Through the development of m6A RNA sequencing, the relevant molecular mechanism of m6A modification has gradually been revealed. It has been found that the effect of m6A modification on RNA metabolism involves processing, nuclear export, translation and even decay. As the most common malignant tumour of the central nervous system, gliomas (especially glioblastoma) have a very poor prognosis, and treatment efficacy is not ideal even with the application of high-intensity treatment measures of surgery combined with chemoradiotherapy. Exploring the origin and development mechanisms of tumour cells from the perspective of tumour biogenesis has always been a hotspot in the field of glioma research. Emerging evidence suggests that m6A modification can play a key role in gliomas through a variety of mechanisms, providing more possibilities for early diagnosis and targeted therapy of gliomas. The aim of the present review is to focus on the research progress regarding the association between m6A modification and gliomas. And to provide a theoretical basis according to the currently available literature for further exploring this association. This review may provide new insights for the molecular mechanism, early diagnosis, histologic grading, targeted therapy and prognostic evaluation of gliomas.

This study aimed to suggest an attention assessment tool using a Digital Pen for measuring the temporal-spatial parameters during the Number Cancelation Test (NCT), and then to establish the normative data for the NCT among children in kindergartens and primary schools in China by recruiting a total of 989 children (496 males). Four measures, i.e., selective attention (SA), speed of cognitive processing (SpC), averaged time of circlings (ATC), and averaged circumference of circled curves (ACCC), were proposed to evaluate the NCT performance. They basically have a development trend with fast speed in the beginning before Grade 1 or 2 of primary schools, and then enter an extremely slow development period (with ceiling or floor effect). SA and SpC have gender and grade main effects, while ATC and ACCC have the grade main effect, only. In particular, females have higher SA scores than males in middle class of kindergarten, and Grade 2–Grade 5 of primary school, but no gender differences in other grades; females have higher SpC scores than males in middle class of kindergarten, and Grade 3–4 of primary school, but no gender differences in other grades. More importantly, in clinical practice, if SA or SpC measure of a child is below than the 5th centile (i.e., p5 level) of his/her grade-specific normative data, then this child may be predicted to have a high-risk of learning disabilities. Findings suggest that the proposed method can be used for early screening of learning disabilities by setting appropriate cut-off values.

Although there are millions of left-behind children in China, the researches on brain structure and functions in left-behind children are not sufficient at the brain imaging level. This study aimed to explore whether there is decreased prefrontal synchronization during joint attention in left-behind children. Sixty children (65.12 ± 6.54 months, 29 males) with 34 left-behind children were recruited. The functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) imaging data from the prefrontal cortex during joint attention, as well as behavioral measures (associated with family income, intelligence, language, and social-emotional abilities), were collected. Results verified that brain imaging data and behavioral measures are correlative and support that left-behind children have deficits in social-emotional abilities. More importantly, left-behind children showed decreased synchronization strength and asymmetry in the right middle frontal gyrus during joint attention. The findings suggest that decreased right prefrontal synchronization strength and asymmetry during joint attention might be vulnerability factors in the development of left-behind children.

Abstract Background Grafting, an ancient agronomic technique, is an artificial mode of asexual reproduction in plants. Recently, grafting research has gradually shifted from modifying agronomic traits to the study of molecular mechanism. Grafting is an excellent tool to study long-range signaling processes in plants. And the grafting between species will help elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying contrasting differences between different species. Arabidopsis thaliana is a salt-sensitive model glycophyte and Eutrema salsugineum (previously Thellungiella salsuginea, salt cress) is a salt-tolerant model halophyte. Successful grafting of these two model plants will help further study the physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying salt tolerance in plants. The aim of this study was to demonstrate two sterile micro-grafting methods for Arabidopsis and salt cress. Results We developed the methods for sterile grafting between A. thaliana and E. salsugineum; this is the first report on inter-generic grafting between Arabidopsis and Eutrema. The method involves cut-in grafting under sterile conditions. The grafted plant part was placed in half strength Murashige and Skoog medium with 1% agar and 1% sugar, and then cultured vertically with 22 °C/18 °C short-day/night cycles. The plants were then transferred to half strength Hoagland nutrient solution for hydroponics. The reported method is simple and easy to operate. Self-grafted Arabidopsis–Arabidopsis and Eutrema–Eutrema plants were used as controls, which were obtained with an improved hypocotyl-cutting grafting method. Ion contents in grafted plants were detected by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. The results showed that the ion content in salt cress and Arabidopsis changed to different degrees after grafting. Conclusions The inter-species grafting technique described here makes it possible to study hybrid plants between Arabidopsis and Eutrema and will contribute to further understanding of long-distance communications in plants. This technique also provides a reference for improving plant varieties using grafting, such as gardening plants, as well as fruit and vegetable crops.

It is suspected early that the ultra-slow crack propagation in fine-granular-area (FGA) may be sensitive to the internal vacuum-like environment. In other words, fatigue failure in the very-high-cycle regime may be related to the internal vacuum-like environment. Since magnesium alloy is more susceptible to the environmental effect, it is selected as the research carrier in this study. A magnesium alloy is investigated in ambient air and vacuum environments comparatively, and the vacuum loading environment offers a valuable reference to investigate the possible environmental effect. The results show that plastic deformation mechanism in different loading environments keeps the same at crack initiation site. However, the different loading environments not only change the fatigue life, but also the failure mode. At higher stress levels, surface failure dominates in air loading environment, whereas internal failure dominates in vacuum loading environment and presents longer fatigue life. It is considered that failure mode in vacuum loading environment is mainly affected by the critical grains, whereas that in air loading environment is mainly affected by the competition between the surface air acceleration effect and the critical grains. Fatigue life is mainly affected by the internal vacuum retarding effect and the surface air accelerating effect.

This paper proposes a single-phase inverter to achieve high power factor, wide input voltage range, and ripple power decoupling without using large passive components. The proposed inverter is obtained by rearranging the positions of the switches and passive components in the exiting circuit. Given that, a wider dc input voltage range can be obtained since it is no longer bounded by half the grid peak voltage. In addition, the inherent low-frequency ripple power is buffered, rather than through increasing the capacitance, by swinging the decoupling capacitor voltage resulting in an improvement of the power density and system lifetime. Furthermore, with adopting a closed-loop control method, no dedicated power-buffering controller is required. This paper starts with introducing the derivation of the proposed inverter followed by the operation principles and circuit analysis. A comparison between the derived circuit and the original one is carried out to show the pros and cons. Finally, a 200-W prototype is constructed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed topology.

The effects of heat treatments on microstructure and basic mechanical properties of selective laser melted (SLM) TC4 titanium alloy were investigated in detail. The results demonstrated that a lot of acicular α/α′ and β phases exist in the SLM TC4 titanium alloy. With the increase in the aging treatment temperature, the metastable α′ phase of SLM TC4 was decomposed into α + β laths. Moreover, the α/α′ phase and β phase grew coarser, leading to a gradual decrease in strength, that is, plasticity and hardness increased and decreased, respectively. In terms of solid-solution aging treatment, the β phase was transformed into the α′ martensite phase in the solid-solution treatment, and the aging treatment induced the decomposition of the metastable α′ phase into α + β laths. The strength and hardness of SLM TC4 alloy increased as the temperature increased. The optimal mechanical properties could be obtained by water quenching after holding at 960 ℃ for 1 h and then air cooling after holding at 600 °C for 8 h.

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) is essential for placental development, whose SNPs have shown increased susceptibility to pregnancy-related diseases, such as preeclampsia. Our aim was to investigate the association between preeclampsia and three PPARγ SNPs (Pro12Ala, C1431T, and C681G), which together with nine clinical factors were used to build a pragmatic model for preeclampsia prediction. Data were collected from 1648 women from the EDEN cohort, of which 35 women had preeclamptic pregnancies, and the remaining 1613 women had normal pregnancies. Univariate analysis comparing preeclamptic patients to the control resulted in the SNP C1431T being the only factor significantly associated with preeclampsia (p < 0.05), with a confidence interval of 95% and odds ratio ranging from 4.90 to 8.75. On the other hand, three methods of multivariate feature selection highlighted seven features that could be potential predictors of preeclampsia: maternal C1431T and C681G variants, obesity, body mass index, number of pregnancies, primiparity, cigarette use, and education. These seven features were further used as input into eight different machine-learning algorithms to create predictive models, whose performances were evaluated based on metrics of accuracy and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). The boost tree-based model performed the best, with respective accuracy and AUC values of 0.971 ± 0.002 and 0.991 ± 0.001 in the training set and 0.951 and 0.701 in the testing set. A flowchart based on the boost tree model was constructed to depict the procedure for preeclampsia prediction. This final decision tree showed that the C1431T variant of PPARγ is significantly associated with susceptibility to preeclampsia. We believe that this final decision tree could be applied in the clinical prediction of preeclampsia in the very early stages of pregnancy.

Trophoblasts, as the cells that make up the main part of the placenta, undergo cell differentiation processes such as invasion, migration, and fusion. Abnormalities in these processes can lead to a series of gestational diseases whose underlying mechanisms are still unclear. One protein that has proven to be essential in placentation is the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ), which is expressed in the nuclei of extravillous cytotrophoblasts (EVCTs) in the first trimester and villous cytotrophoblasts (VCTs) throughout pregnancy. Here, we aimed to explore the genome-wide effects of PPARγ on EVCTs and VCTs via treatment with the PPARγ-agonist rosiglitazone. EVCTs and VCTs were purified from human chorionic villi, cultured in vitro, and treated with rosiglitazone. The transcriptomes of both types of cells were then quantified using microarray profiling. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were filtered and submitted for gene ontology (GO) annotation and pathway analysis with ClueGO. The online tool STRING was used to predict PPARγ and DEG protein interactions, while iRegulon was used to predict the binding sites for PPARγ and DEG promoters. GO and pathway terms were compared between EVCTs and VCTs with clusterProfiler. Visualizations were prepared in Cytoscape. From our microarray data, 139 DEGs were detected in rosiglitazone-treated EVCTs (RT-EVCTs) and 197 DEGs in rosiglitazone-treated VCTs (RT-VCTs). Downstream annotation analysis revealed the similarities and differences between RT-EVCTs and RT-VCTs with respect to the biological processes, molecular functions, cellular components, and KEGG pathways affected by the treatment, as well as predicted binding sites for both protein-protein interactions and transcription factor-target gene interactions. These results provide a broad perspective of PPARγ-activated processes in trophoblasts; further analysis of the transcriptomic signatures of RT-EVCTs and RT-VCTs should open new avenues for future research and contribute to the discovery of possible drug-targeted genes or pathways in the human placenta.

This study investigates the effect of impact velocity and particle size on crushing characteristics. We use a discrete-element method simulation and construct cohesive limestone particles with internal microinterfaces and cracks for impact crushing experimentation. The simulation model follows the same process as the impact crushing experiment. Results show that, after crushing at impact velocities of 30 and 40 m/s, the simulated particle-size distribution curve matches experimental results as closely as 95%. For different particle sizes, results are more than 90% in agreement. These results indicate the feasibility of the cohesive-particle crushing simulation model. When the particle size is 15 mm, an approximate linear relationship exists on impact velocity and crushing ratio. For a constant impact velocity, the particle size of 18 mm results in the maximum crushing ratio.

Background: During the process of elongation, the embryo increases in size within the uterus, while the extra-embryonic tissues (EETs) develop and differentiate in preparation for implantation. As it grows, the ovoid embryo transforms into a tubular form first and then a filamentous form. This process is directed by numerous genes and pathways, the expression of which may be altered in the case of developmental irregularities such as when the conceptus is shorter than expected or when the embryo develops after splitting. In bovines, efforts to understand the molecular basis of elongation have employed trophoblastic vesicles (TVs)—short tubular EET pieces that lack an embryo—which also elongate in vivo. To date, however, we lack molecular analyses of TVs at the ovoid or filamentous stages that might shed light on the expression changes involved. Methods: Following in vivo development, we collected bovine conceptuses from the ovoid (D12) to filamentous stages (D18), sectioned them into small pieces with or without their embryonic disc (ED), and then, transferred them to a receptive bovine uterus to assess their elongation abilities. We also grew spherical blastocysts in vitro up to D8 and subjected them to the same treatment. Then, we assessed the differences in gene expression between different samples and fully elongating controls at different stages of elongation using a bovine array (10 K) and an extended qPCR array comprising 224 genes across 24 pathways. Results: In vivo, TVs elongated more or less depending on the stage at which they had been created and the time spent in utero. Their daily elongation rates differed from control EET, with the rates of TVs sometimes resembling those of earlier-stage EET. Overall, the molecular signatures of TVs followed a similar developmental trajectory as intact EET from D12–D18. However, within each stage, TVs and intact EET displayed distinct expression dynamics, some of which were shared with other short epithelial models. Conclusion: Differences between TVs and EET likely result from multiple factors, including a reduction in the length and signaling capabilities of TVs, delayed elongation from inadequate uterine signals, and modified crosstalk between the conceptus and the uterus. These findings confirm that close coordination between uterine, embryonic, and extra-embryonic tissues is required to orchestrate proper elongation and, based on the partial differentiation observed, raise questions about the presence/absence of certain developmental cues or even their asynchronies.
