We have developed an experimental and analytical setup for thermal desorption spectroscopy of solid water films on surfaces. We obtain the coverage-dependent desorption kinetics of water molecules from a well-defined ultra-thin alumina/NiAl(110) surface in the coverage range of 0–2 monolayers. We use a novel deconvolution technique to eliminate the pumping delay of water vapor in the vacuum system, which has previously hindered the accurate estimation of desorption kinetic parameters, such as activation energy and pre-exponential factor. The coverage-dependent Arrhenius analysis reveals that the desorption activation energy decreases with increasing coverage in the sub-monolayer range, indicating that the water–water interaction is not attractive. We also find that the pre-exponential factor for the second layer is higher than that for the sub-monolayer. We explain this difference in terms of transition state theory and propose that entropic effects play a significant role in water desorption kinetics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Various parameters affecting the performance of bulk thermoelectric (TE) modules used for integrated circuit (IC) thermal management are studied. An effective circuit model is developed that takes into account various ideal and nonideal effects in the module. It is shown that there is an optimum module thickness and an optimum operating current which depend on the overall heat dissipation and on the external thermal resistances. Optimized TE modules with ZT similar to 0.8, Will have a cross section over leg length ratio of 0.037 in, can increase the chip operation power by 15% in comparison with the case without a TE cooler while maintaining the chip temperature below 100 degrees C. This is for a package thermal resistance of 0.2 K/W. Prospects for TE material with higher ZT values and the effect of contact resistance on the power dissipation density are also discussed. The results presented in this paper can be used in applications other than in the IC thermal management when external thermal resistances dominate the performance of TE modules.

We have developed a spin-polarized-hydrogen beam with a hexapole magnet. By combining the beam chopper and pulsed laser ionization detection, the time-of-flight of the hydrogen beam was measured, and the dependence of the beam profile on the velocity was acquired, which was consistent with the beam trajectory simulations. The spin polarization of the beam was analyzed by using the Stern–Gerlach-type magnet in combination with the spatial scan of the detection laser. The spin polarization was about 95% at a focusing condition due to the hexapole magnet. The polarization was, on the other hand, reduced to about 70% for the beam at higher velocities, which is consistent with simulation results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To determine outcomes of stepping-down and prediction of outcome after stepping-down of ICSs in controlled adult asthma. Methods: We performed a retrospective study on 21–81 year-old hospital-based outpatients with asthma in Japan. Protocol for stepping-down of ICSs was performed according to the GINA guideline. Failure/success of stepping-down is judged as occurring exacerbation or not for stepping-down of ICSs. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to develop a prediction model for failed stepping-down, and then was validated by the leave-one-out cross-validation method. Our model of prediction score was calculated using receiver-operating characteristic area under the curve (AUC) analysis. The Nelson–Aalen curve demonstrated time to failure of stepping-down of ICSs. Results: A total of 126 patients with asthma attempted the stepping-down of ICSs according to the guideline. Of patients with follow-up, 97 (77.0%) of stepping-down attempts were successful. Using multivariate logistic regression analysis, comorbidity with rhinitis/rhinosinusitis and phlegm grade were independent predictors of failed stepping-down of ICSs, with odds ratios of 3.8 (95% confidence interval, 1.04–13.3; P=0.04) and 1.3 (95% confidence interval, 1.01–11.5; P=0.04), respectively. These variables were then used to build a prediction score in terms of the prediction of failed stepping-down events. When the two variables were added to form the prediction score, the discriminative power of scores calculated by the prediction model using the AUC was 0.75 (range: 0.62–0.88) for naïve prediction and 0.72 (range: 0.60–0.86) after cross-validation. In the time-to-failure models, cumulative hazard ratio of failed stepping-down have fixed 1 year after stepping-down. Conclusion: Our results suggest that comorbidity with rhinitis/rhinosinusitis and phlegm grade are imperative to predict failed stepping-down of ICSs in controlled patients with adult asthma. Among the different immunization strategies employed to date is inoculation of plasmid DNA coding for parasite antigens, which has a demonstrated ability to induce humoral and cellular immune responses. In this sense, inoculation of plasmid DNA encoding Leishmania kinetoplasmid membrane protein-11 (KMP-11) was able to confer protection against visceral leishmaniasis. However, recently the use of antigen delivery systems such as poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles has also proven effective for eliciting protective immune responses.Methods: In the present work, we tested two immunization strategies with the goal of obtaining protection, in terms of lesion development and parasite load, against cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by L. braziliensis. One strategy involved immunization with plasmid DNA encoding L. infantum chagasi KMP-11. Alternatively, mice were primed with PLGA nanoparticles loaded with the recombinant plasmid DNA and boosted using PLGA nanoparticles loaded with recombinant KMP-11.Results: Both immunization strategies elicited detectable cellular immune responses with the presence of both proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines; mice receiving the recombinant PLGA nanoparticle formulations also demonstrated anti-KMP-11 IgG1 and IgG2a. Mice were then challenged with L. braziliensis, in the presence of sand fly saliva. Lesion development was not inhibited following either immunization strategy. However, immunization with PLGA nanoparticles resulted in a more prominent reduction in parasite load at the infection site when compared with immunization using plasmid DNA alone. This effect was associated with a local increase in interferon-gamma and in tumor necrosis factor-alpha. Both immunization strategies also resulted in a lower parasite load in the draining lymph nodes, albeit not significantly.Conclusion: Our results encourage the pursuit of immunization strategies employing nanobased delivery systems for vaccine development against cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by L. braziliensis infection.Keywords: vaccine, nanoparticle, Leishmania, kinetoplastid membrane protein-11
