Abstract

Employing inelastic X-ray scattering and neutron scattering techniques, we observed nematic and magnetic phase transitions with distinct characters in K$_{5}$Fe$_{4}$Ag$_{6}$Te$_{10}$. Upon cooling, the nematic order undergoes a strongly first-order phase transition followed by a second-order magnetic transition at $T_{\textrm{N}}$ $\approx$ 34.6 K. The temperature difference between these two phase transitions is $\sim$ 1 K. The observed phenomenon can be attributed to a distinctive first-order preemptive Ising-nematic transition, a characteristic unique to a quasi-two-dimensional scenario marked by strong out-of-plane spatial anisotropy due to weak coupling. Our studies establish K$_{5}$Fe$_{4}$Ag$_{6}$Te$_{10}$ as the first material in the family of iron pnictides and chalcogenides that possesses a nematic tricritical point preceding the magnetic one upon decreasing nematic coupling., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We studied the relationship between the lattice constant and magnetism of L10-ordered FePt under high pressure by means of first-principles calculations and synchrotron x-ray measurements. Based on our calculations, we found that the c/a ratio shows an anomaly at ~ 20 GPa and that the Pt magnetic moment is sharply suppressed at ~ 60 GPa. As for the c/a, we experimentally verified the anomaly at ~ 20 GPa by powder x-ray diffraction. We also measured the x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Pt L edge up to ~ 20 GPa. Any significant change of the Pt magnetic moment was not observed, in agreement with the calculations. These results thus indicate the possibility that novel magnetic states can be created in L10-ordered FePt by lattice deformation under high pressure., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Hiroshi Fukui, Hideto Kawaratani, Kosuke Kaji, Hiroaki Takaya, Hitoshi Yoshiji Department of Gastroenterology, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Nara Medical University, Nara, Japan Abstract: Among the various risky complications of liver cirrhosis, refractory ascites is associated with poor survival of cirrhotics and persistently worsens their quality of life (QOL). Major clinical guidelines worldwide define refractory ascites as ascites that cannot be managed by medical therapy either because of a lack of response to maximum doses of diuretics or because patients develop complications related to diuretic therapy that preclude the use of an effective dose of diuretics. Due to the difficulty in receiving a liver transplantation (LT), the ultimate solution for refractory ascites, most cirrhotic patients have selected the palliative therapy such as repeated serial paracentesis, transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt, or peritoneovenous shunt to improve their QOL. During the past several decades, new interventions and methodologies, such as indwelling peritoneal catheter, peritoneal-urinary drainage, and cell-free and concentrated ascites reinfusion therapy, have been introduced. In addition, new medical treatments with vasoconstrictors or vasopressin V2 receptor antagonists have been proposed. Both the benefits and risks of these old and new modalities have been extensively studied in relation to the pathophysiological changes in ascites formation. Although the best solution for refractory ascites is to eliminate hepatic failure either by LT or by causal treatment, the selection of the best palliative therapy for individual patients is of utmost importance, aiming at achieving the longest possible, comfortable life. This review briefly summarizes the changing landscape of variable treatment modalities for cirrhotic patients with refractory ascites, aiming at clarifying their possibilities and limitations. Evolving issues with regard to the impact of gut-derived systemic and local infection on the clinical course of cirrhotic patients have paved the way for the development of a new gut microbiome-based therapeutics. Thus, it should be further investigated whether the early therapeutic approach to gut dysbiosis provides a better solution for the management of cirrhotic ascites. Abstract

A combined microscopic, i.e., powder and single crystal x-ray diffraction and inelastic x-ray scattering, and macroscopic, i.e., heat capacity, characterization was carried out on YB 66 between 10 and 400 K. The system crystallizes in a rather large unit cell with a lattice parameter of about 23.4 Å at room temperature. The volume thermal expansion coefficient is found to be 3.9 × 10 − 5 K − 1 at 295 K. A high Debye temperature above 1000 K was determined using several methods, 1043 (25) K , from heat capacity measurements, 1430 (59) K , from elastic constants measurements, and 1690 (198) K , from thermal expansion measurements. The thermal transport is modeled as a collection of Einstein oscillators with an Einstein temperature of 194 (2) K. The C 11 and C 44 elastic constants are above 400 and 150 GPa , respectively. The average speed of sound in YB 66 is estimated to be 9631 (380) m / s , similar to the average speed of sound in corundum, 10 000 m / s. The large volume of the unit cell and the stiffness of the crystal structure make YB 66 a promising candidate for high-resolution x-ray monochromatization applications. Candidate reflections for high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering are indicated and potential pitfalls relevant to the quality of crystals and multi-beam cases are mentioned. Abstract

Elastic properties of B2‐Fe0.67Ni0.06Si0.27 (15 wt.% Si) alloy have been investigated by combined high‐resolution inelastic X‐ray scattering and powder X‐ray diffraction in diamond anvil cells up to 100 GPa at room temperature. Densities (ρ), compressional (VP) and shear (VS) wave velocities were extrapolated to inner core conditions to enable comparison with the preliminary reference Earth model. The modeled aggregate compressional and shear wave velocities and densities of the two‐phase mixture of B2‐Fe0.67Ni0.06Si0.27 and hcp‐Fe‐Ni are consistent with inner core PREM values of VP, VS, and ρ based on a linear mixing model with 30(5) vol % B2‐Fe0.67Ni0.06Si0.27 and 70(5) vol % hcp Fe‐Ni, which corresponds to ∼3–5 wt.% Si and ∼5–12 wt.% Ni., Plain Language Summary: The composition of the inner core holds key information about how Earth evolved and how current processes such as the geomagnetic field work. Because the core cannot be directly sampled, our best estimates of its composition are based on the comparison of geophysical data with laboratory measurements of candidate materials. Decades of study have shown the inner core to be composed mainly of iron (with a minor amount of nickel) alloyed with one or more light elements, such as silicon. However, the effect of Si on the geophysical properties of Fe‐Ni alloys is not well established. In this study, we performed laboratory experiments to determine the density and sound velocity of Fe‐Ni‐Si alloy under extreme pressure conditions. We compared our results with seismological determinations and found that Earth's inner core can be accounted for by a mechanical mixture of cubic Fe‐Ni‐Si and hexagonal Fe‐Ni alloys. This mixture has a bulk composition of ∼3–5 weight % Si and ∼5–12 weight % Ni and is consistent with geophysical constraints., Key Points: Sound velocities and densities of B2‐Fe‐Ni‐Si alloy are determined at high pressure, up to 100 GPa, using inelastic X‐ray scattering and X‐ray diffraction.
