Abstract

The synthesis, characterization and properties of the sulfur-bridged cubane-type molybdenum gallium clusters were discussed. These clusters were obtained from the reaction of cluster [Mo3S4(H2O)9]4+ with gallium metal. The cyclic voltammogram of molybdenum-iron cluster is very similar to those in the cyclic voltammogram of [Mo3GaS4(H2O)12]6+, which shows three reduction processes; the cathodic peak potentials, Epc are -0.83, -1.20 and -1.74, respectively.

30. Numerical Study of Combination Parameters for Particle Impact Velocity and Temperature in Cold Spray

Abstract

Numerical simulations of gas/particle flows of cold spray are performed for N2 and He, respectively, to investigate the usefulness of the two material-independent combination parameters derived from the equations of particle motion and temperature. The first combination parameter is the particle-diameter multiplied by the material density, which governs the particle velocity. The second one is the squared particle-diameter multiplied by the material density and specific heat, which affects the particle temperature.In the numerical simulation, the materials of the spray particle selected are WC-12Co, Cu and Ti. The numerical results show that the maximum impact velocity of particle is obtained, when the first combination parameter takes specific value regardless of the material type. Furthermore, it is shown that the particle diameter and its temperature corresponding to the maximum impact velocity can be graphically estimated by using the two combination parameters for any powder-materials normally used for the thermal spray.

Abstract

The warm spray (WS) gun was developed to make an oxidation-free coating of temperature-sensitive material, such as titanium and copper, on a substrate. The gun has a combustion chamber followed by a mixing chamber, in which the combustion gas is mixed with the nitrogen gas at room temperature. The temperature of the mixed gas can be controlled in the range of about 1000-2500 K by adjusting the mass flow rate of nitrogen gas. The gas in the mixing chamber is accelerated to supersonic speed through a converging-diverging nozzle followed by a straight barrel. This paper shows how to construct the mathematical model of the gas flow and particle velocity/temperature of the WS process. The model consists of four parts: (a) thermodynamic and gas-dynamic calculations of combustion and mixing chambers, (b) quasi-one-dimensional calculation of the internal gas flow of the gun, (c) semiempirical calculation of the jet flow from the gun exit, and (d) calculation of particle velocity and temperature traveling in the gas flow. The validity of the mathematical model is confirmed by the experimental results of the aluminum particle sprayed by the WS gun.
