3. Quantitative Evaluation of Lumbar Segmental Stability using a Pressure Biofeedback Unit.

Abstract

This study examined the method for quantitative assessment of lumbar segmental stability (LSS) using a Pressure Biofeedback Unit (PBU). The subjects were 10 healthy men with no history of low back pain. The task movement consisted of placing the PBU under the lumbar region in the dorsal supine position and instructing the subject to raise and lower the right leg 10 times. This task movement was performed under two conditions: the transversus abdominis muscle (TrA) were not contracted (CON), and TrA were contracted (abdominal draw-in maneuver: ADIM). As an index of LSS, the coefficient of variation (CV) of PBU pressure change during two tasks. Surface electromyography (EMG) was used to determine the level of muscle activity (%EMGmax) of the transversus abdominis-obliquus internus (TrA-OI) muscles. The results that CV values of PBU were significantly lower in the ADIM than in the CON. Moreover, TrA-OI muscle activity was significantly higher in the ADIM, with a muscle activity level of around 30%EMGmax. Based on these results, the method used in this study could be used to quantify LSS. In addition, LSS did not require excessive contraction of the TrA, which could be achieved by maintaining contraction at a relatively low effort level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

6. Volcanic hazard information for disaster management decision makers in Japan

Abstract

In the Next-Generation Volcano Research Promotion Project (FY2016-2025) underway in Japan, the information tools are being created, reflecting the newest monitoring data, to enable decision makers to obtain volcanological information that will help them take effective actions for disaster mitigation. In Japan, the Volcano Disaster Prevention Council is created for each active volcano, which includes local and national official disaster prevention agencies and volcano experts. The national volcano disaster prevention agency is the Japan Meteorological Agency (IMA), and local governments pre-determine their evacuation actions based on the Volcanic Alert Levels issued by the JMA. Therefore, decision makers, the target of the information tool, include not only local government disaster prevention officials, but also the JMA, and experts belonging to the Volcano Disaster Prevention Council, which serves as a consultative body. The information tools under development include three main contents: volcanic ash damage forecasting, climbers’ evacuee rescue support, and public awareness on volcanic disasters. Experiments and simulations are being conducted on the effects of ashfall on roads, buildings, and other infrastructure, on the continued functionality of hospitals, andon the reinforcement of climbers' huts against ballistic ejecta.The results of these experiments and simulations are represented and provided in GIS as real-time information as well as past disaster information (including past countermeasures). Our researchers are working with local governments and urban infrastructure companies that host and locate downwind active volcanoes to create information that reflects their needs and that can be understood by non-volcano specialists.

Abstract

To determine whether lung capillary pressure regulates surfactant secretion, we viewed alveoli of the constantly inflated, isolated blood-perfused rat lung by fluorescence microscopy. By alveolar micropuncture we infused fura 2 and lamellar body (LB)-localizing dyes for fluorescence detection of, respectively, the alveolar cytosolic [Ca.sup.2+] concentration ([[[Ca.sup.2+]].sub.i]) and type II cell exocytosis. Increasing left atrial pressure (Pla) from 5 to 10 cm[H.sub.2]O increased septal capillary diameter by 26% and induced marked alveolar [[[Ca.sup.2+].sub.i] oscillations that abated on relief of pressure elevation. The rate of loss of LB fluorescence that reflects the LB exocytosis rate increased fourfold after the pressure elevation and continued at the same rate even after pressure and [[[Ca.sup.2+]].sub.i] oscillations had returned to baseline. In alveoli pretreated with either 1,2-bis(2-aminophenoxy)ethane-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid-AM, the intracellular [Ca.sup.2+] chelator, or heptanol, the gap junctional blocker, the pressure-induced exocytosis was completely inhibited. We conclude that capillary pressure and surfactant secretion are mechanically coupled. The antiferromagnetically coupled (AFC) media with very thin CoPt or Co interlayers introduced between the Ru and the magnetic layers for the enhancement of exchange coupling is examined. The increase in the thickness of the Co interlayer from 0 to 1 nm lead to an increase in the exchange coupling field from 0.6 to 4.2 kOe.

Abstract

The investigation of Co/Pd multilayer media with a Pd-SiN granular seed layer as perpendicular recording media is discussed. Good magnetic properties with a coercivity of 3.9 kOe, a nucleation field of -2.1 kOe and a M - H slope parameter of 1.4 were observed in the Pd-SiN granular seed layer of 3 nm.

Abstract

The electronic properties of N-doped rutile TiO2(110) have been investigated using synchrotron-based photoemission and density-functional calculations. The doping via N2+ ion bombardment leads to the implantation of N atoms (∼5% saturation concentration) that coexist with O vacancies. Ti 2p core level spectra show the formation of Ti3+ and a second partially reduced Ti species with oxidation states between +4 and +3. The valence region of the TiO2-xNy(110) systems exhibits a broad peak for Ti3+ near the Fermi level and N-induced features above the O 2p valence band that shift the edge up by ∼0.5 eV. The magnitude of this shift is consistent with the “redshift” observed in the ultraviolet spectrum of N-doped TiO2. The experimental and theoretical results show the existence of attractive interactions between the dopant and O vacancies. First, the presence of N embedded in the surface layer reduces the formation energy of O vacancies. Second, the existence of O vacancies stabilizes the N impurities with respect to N2(g) formation. When oxygen vacancies and N impurities are together there is an electron transfer from the higher energy 3d band of Ti3+ to the lower energy 2p band of the N2- impurities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

RED SEED stands for Risk Evaluation, Detection and Simulation during Effusive Eruption Disasters, and combines stakeholders from the remote sensing, modelling and response communities with experience in tracking volcanic effusive events. The group first met during a three day-long workshop held in Clermont Ferrand (France) between 28 and 30 May 2013. During each day, presentations were given reviewing the state of the art in terms of (a) volcano hot spot detection and parameterization, (b) operational satellite-based hot spot detection systems, (c) lava flow modelling and (d) response protocols during effusive crises. At the end of each presentation set, the four groups retreated to discuss and report on requirements for a truly integrated and operational response that satisfactorily combines remote sensors, modellers and responders during an effusive crisis. The results of collating the final reports, and follow-up discussions that have been on-going since the workshop, are given here. We can reduce our discussions to four main findings. (1) Hot spot detection tools are operational and capable of providing effusive eruption onset notice within 15 min. (2) Spectral radiance metrics can also be provided with high degrees of confidence. However, if we are to achieve a truly global system, more local receiving stations need to be installed with hot spot detection and data processing modules running on-site and in real time. (3) Models are operational, but need real-time input of reliable time-averaged discharge rate data and regular updates of digital elevation models if they are to be effective; the latter can be provided by the radar/photogrammetry community. (4) Information needs to be provided in an agreed and standard format following an ensemble approach and using models that have been validated and recognized as trustworthy by the responding authorities. All of this requires a sophisticated and centralized data collection, distribution and reporting hub that is based on a philosophy of joint ownership and mutual trust. While the next chapter carries out an exercise to explore the viability of the last point, the detailed recommendations behind these findings are detailed here.

Abstract

Individual rationality, Pareto efficiency, and strategy- proofness are crucial properties of decision making functions, or mechanisms, in social choice literatures. In this paper we investigate mechanisms for exchange models where each agent is initially endowed with a set of goods and may have indifferences on distinct bundles of goods, and monetary transfers are not allowed. Sonmez (1999) showed that in such models, those three properties are not compatible in general. The impossibility, however, only holds under an assumption on preference domains. The main purpose of this paper is to discuss the compatibility of those three properties when the assumption does not hold. We first establish a preference domain called top-only preferences, which violates the assumption, and develop a class of exchange mechanisms that satisfy all those properties. Each mechanism in the class utilizes one instance of the mechanisms introduced by Saban and Sethuraman (2013). We also find a class of preference domains called m-chotomous preferences, where the assumption fails and these properties are incompatible.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2014-01-01 The objective of this study was to evaluate different storage conditions to maximize the shelf-life of buriti fruits; under ambient conditions the fruits last only 2-3 days. Buriti fruits were stored refrigerated at 10, 12 and 15oC with 85±5% relative humidity, and at room temperature (23±5°C) and 60±5% relative humidity. Fruits were analyzed every three days over a 12-day period for weight loss, respiratory activity, soluble solids, pH, titratable acidity, lipids, protein and fiber. Abstract

In 2008 we published the first set of guidelines for standardizing research in autophagy. Since then, research on this topic has continued to accelerate, and many new scientists have entered the field. Our knowledge base and relevant new technologies have also been expanding. Accordingly, it is important to update these guidelines for monitoring autophagy in different organisms. Various reviews have described the range of assays that have been used for this purpose. Nevertheless, there continues to be confusion regarding acceptable methods to measure autophagy, especially in multicellular eukaryotes. A key point that needs to be emphasized is that there is a difference between measurements that monitor the numbers or volume of autophagic elements (e.g., autophagosomes or autolysosomes) at any stage of the autophagic process vs. those that measure flux through the autophagy pathway (i.e., the complete process); thus, a block in macroautophagy that results in autophagosome accumulation needs to be differentiated from stimuli that result in increased autophagic activity, defined as increased autophagy induction coupled with increased delivery to, and degradation within, lysosomes (in most higher eukaryotes and some protists such as Dictyostelium) or the vacuole (in plants and fungi). In other words, it is especially important that investigators new to the field understand that the appearance of more autophagosomes does not necessarily equate with more autophagy. In fact, in many cases, autophagosomes accumulate because of a block in trafficking to lysosomes without a concomitant change in autophagosome biogenesis, whereas an increase in autolysosomes may reflect a reduction in degradative activity. Here, we present a set of guidelines for the selection and interpretation of methods for use by investigators who aim to examine macroautophagy and related processes, as well as for reviewers who need to provide realistic and reasonable critiques of papers that are focused on these processes. These guidelines are not meant to be a formulaic set of rules, because the appropriate assays depend in part on the question being asked and the system being used. In addition, we emphasize that no individual assay is guaranteed to be the most appropriate one in every situation, and we strongly recommend the use of multiple assays to monitor autophagy. In these guidelines, we consider these various methods of assessing autophagy and what information can, or cannot, be obtained from them. Finally, by discussing the merits and limits of particular autophagy assays, we hope to encourage technical innovation in the field. © 2012 Landes Bioscience.

Abstract

International audience; In this study, to propose a new data acquisition method for detecting the dozing symptom during wakeful state of a driver, magnetic and pneumatic sensors for extracting biological signals from the driver under the dynamic seated condition, a suspension with a combination of a magnetic spring and a damper to avoid cruel disturbance input from the floor are developed. To estimate emerging timing of sleep detecting signal, chaos analysis was employed which yields the largest Lyapunov exponent and the power from measured pulse waves. By making use of the information of the sleep herald phenomenon and sleep latent time, the relation of sleep latent time with medical parameters closely related to a muscle fatigue was found.
