Abstract

The objective of this work is to develop bioactive glass coatings for metallic orthopedic implants. A new family of glasses in the SiO2-Na2O-K2O-CaO-MgO-P2O5 system has been synthesized and characterized. The glass properties (thermal expansion, softening and transformation temperatures, density and hardness) are in line with the predictions of established empirical models. The optimized firing conditions to fabricate coatings on Ti-based and Co-Cr alloys have been determined and related to the glass properties and the interfacial reactions. Excellent adhesion to alloys has been achieved through the formation of 100-200 nm thick interfacial layers (Ti5Si3 on Ti-based alloys and CrOx on Co-Cr). Finally, glass coatings, approximately 100 mu m thick, have been fabricated onto commercial Ti alloy-based dental implants.

Abstract

Graded glass and glass-hydroxyapatite coatings on Ti-based and Co-Cr alloys have been prepared using a simple enameling technique. The composition of the glasses has been tailored to match the thermal expansion of the alloys. By controlling the firing time, and temperature, it has been possible to control the reactivity between the glass and the alloy and to fabricate coatings (25 to 150 mu m thick) with excellent adhesion to the substrate, resistant to corrosion and able to precipitate hydroxyapatite during in vitro tests in simulated body fluid.

Abstract

Herein, the crystallization behavior of a Li2O–Al2O3–SiO2 (LAS) glass system with the addition of ZrO2 and SnO2 as nucleating agents was investigated using X‐ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, four‐dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy, and X‐ray absorption fine‐structure measurements. At lower heat‐treatment temperatures, the addition of ZrO2 and SnO2 afforded a ZrSnO4 solid solution (SS), whereas at higher heat‐treatment temperatures, the ZrSnO4 SS decomposed, affording tetragonal ZrO2 and tetragonal SnO2. LAS‐based crystalline phases, such as β‐quartz and β‐spodumene phases SS, were formed after the formation of the ZrSnO4 SS. ZrSnO4 SS particles a few nanometers in size were present in contact with the β‐quartz SS particles a few dozen nanometers in size. This suggests that the ZrSnO4 SS served as a crystal nucleus for the β‐quartz SS, promoting its growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

12. Effect of small additions of Li2O on phase separation and crystallization of barium‐silicate glasses.

Abstract

It is known that the addition of Li2O to 33.3BaO‐66.7SiO2 glass, whose composition is the same as BaSi2O5, promotes crystallization of BaSi2O5. In this study, in order to clarify the effect of a smaller amount of Li2O, xLi2O‐(30‐x)BaO‐70SiO2[mol%] (x = 0, 0.2, 0.5) glasses were prepared. The main crystalline phases in the heat treatments near the maximum crystallization peak temperature, were high‐BaSi2O5 and low‐BaSi2O5 which transformed from high‐BaSi2O5. It is found that the introduction of only 0.2 mol% and 0.5 mol% Li2O significantly changes the crystallization behavior. In the composition without Li2O, only high‐BaSi2O5 was formed after heat treatment even for 24 h. For compositions containing Li2O, low‐BaSi2O5 was formed within 1 h of heat treatment. In these compositions, it is found that the addition of Li2O enhances phase separation in the early stage of heat treatment, resulting in the formation of Si‐rich droplet phases and Ba‐rich phases. The composition of the Ba rich glass phase would be close to the stoichiometric composition of BaSi2O5, suggesting a significant change in crystallization behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The development and characterization of the optical properties of a neodymium(III)‐doped 42.75AlF3–33.25CaF2–19BaF2–5YF3 (Nd3+‐doped BCA‐5Y) glass in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) region are reported. Photoluminescence peaks at 180 and 227 nm are observed upon excitation with the 157 nm emission of a F2 laser. The dominant 180 nm emission peak is assigned to the 4f25d–4f3 (4I9/2 level) transition in Nd3+. This emission peak exhibits a fast, single exponential luminescence with a 16 ns decay time. The strong luminescence intensity and the fast decay time allude to its prospects for scintillator applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Translucent polycrystalline aluminas with different grain sizes were obtained by sintering the green compact, which was fabricated by using slip casting methods for high-purity α-alumina (99.99 %) powder of 0.24 μm in grain size, at 1,373 ∼ 2,073 K and by applying HIP method. Effect of average grain size on transmittance and mechanical strength of sintered bodies was investigated. For sintered bodies with average grain size of less than 2 μm, transmittance increased because of the effect by Rayleigh scattering. Non-translucent alumina with average grain size about 2 ∼ 7 μm is considered to follow Mie scattering. For average grain sizes larger than 7 μm, the transmittance was slightly increased based on the law of Fresnel. Mechanical strength of sintered body increased with decreasing the grain size, and depended on the inverse-square law of the grain size. Polycrystalline alumina with the average grain size of 0.8 μm showed the excellent properties of high transmittance and high mechanical strength, compared with that of lucalox.

Abstract

A monolithic silica glass doped with Pr3+ was prepared by immersing a mesoporous SiO2–polyvinly alcohol (PVA) nanocomposite in a Pr nitrate solution and then sintering it at 1100℃ in air. The sintered glass exhibited pink emission when excited by ultraviolet irradiation. The photoluminescence intensity of the glass depended on the total concentration of Pr ions, which was adjusted by changing the concentration of the Pr nitrate solution and the immersion time. The glass with the highest photoluminescence intensity was prepared by using a 1- or 10-mM Pr solution at an immersion time of 60 min. To reveal how the immersion conditions affected the photoluminescence intensity, we analyzed and discussed the adsorption kinetics of the Pr ions onto the surface of the mesoporous nanocomposite. At immersion times below 60 min, the Pr ions diffused into pores of the nanocomposite without aggregating. To prepare Pr3+-doped silica glass with high photoluminescence, both the concentration of the Pr solution and the immersion time must be controlled. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
