Coherent photoproduction of the neutral pion and eta meson on the deuteron, $\gamma{d}${$\to$}$\pi^0\eta{d}$, has been experimentally studied at incident photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. The total cross section demonstrates a rapid rise below 1 GeV. The data are underestimated by the existing theoretical calculations based on quasi-free $\pi^0 \eta$ photoproduction on the nucleon followed by deuteron coalescence. At the same time, the data are rather well reproduced by the calculations taking into account the final-state interaction. We have also measured for the first time the differential cross sections: the $\pi^0 \eta$ invariant-mass distribution $d\sigma/dM_{\pi \eta}$, the $\pi^0 d$ invariant-mass distribution $d\sigma/dM_{\pi d}$, the $\eta d$ invariant-mass distribution $d\sigma/dM_{\eta d}$, and the distribution over the deuteron emission angle $d\sigma/d\Omega_d$ in the overall center-of-mass frame. The measured cross section $d\sigma/d\Omega_d$ does not exhibit strongly backward-peaking behavior predicted by the calculations. At all incident energies, an increase in $d\sigma/dM_{\eta d}$ near the $\eta d$ threshold is observed, which indicates a bound or virtual $\eta d$ state resulting from a strong attraction between $\eta$ and a deuteron. The possibilities of using coherent $\pi^0\eta$ photoproduction on a nucleus to study the $\eta$-nuclear interaction are also discussed., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

To investigate the interaction between the nucleon $N$ and nucleon resonance $N(1535)1/2^-$, the $\eta d$ threshold structure connected to the isoscalar $S$-wave $N$-$N(1535)1/2^-$ system has been experimentally studied in the $\gamma{d}${$\to$}$\pi^0\eta{d}$ reaction at incident photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. A strong enhancement is observed near the $\eta d$ threshold over the three-body phase-space contribution in the $\eta d$ invariant-mass distribution. An analysis incorporating the known isovector resonance $\mathcal{D}_{12}$ with a spin-parity of $2^+$ in the $\pi^0d$ channel reveals the existence of a narrow isoscalar resonance-like structure with $1^-$ in the $\eta d$ system. Using a Flatt\'e parametrization, the mass is found to be $2.427_{-0.006}^{+0.013}$ GeV, close to the $\eta d$ threshold, and the width is $\left(0.029_{-0.029}^{+0.006}{\rm\ GeV}\right)+\left(0.00_{-0.00}^{+0.41}\right) p_\eta c$, where $p_\eta$ denotes the $\eta$ momentum in the rest frame of the $\eta d$ system. The observed structure would be attributed to a predicted isoscalar $1^-$ $\eta NN$ bound state from $\eta NN$ and $\pi NN$ coupled-channel calculation, or an $\eta d$ virtual state owing to strong $\eta d$ attraction., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Unconventional features of relativistic Dirac/Weyl quasi-particles in topological materials are most evidently manifested in the 2D quantum Hall effect (QHE), whose variety is further enriched by their spin and/or valley polarization. Although its extension to three dimensions has been long-sought and inspired theoretical proposals, material candidates have been lacking. Here we have discovered valley-contrasting spin-polarized Dirac fermions in a multilayer form in bulk antiferromagnet BaMnSb$_2$, where the out-of-plane Zeeman-type spin splitting is induced by the in-plane inversion symmetry breaking and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the distorted Sb square net. Furthermore, we have observed well-defined quantized Hall plateaus together with vanishing interlayer conductivity at low temperatures as a hallmark of the half-integer QHE in a bulk form. The Hall conductance of each layer is found to be nearly quantized to $2(N+1/2)e^2/h$ with $N$ being the Landau index, which is consistent with two spin-polarized Dirac valleys protected by the strong spin-valley coupling., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures. Photoproduction of the $\omega$ meson on the proton has been experimentally studied near the threshold. The total cross sections are determined at incident energies ranging from 1.09 to 1.15 GeV. The 1/2 and 3/2 spin-averaged scattering length $a_{\omega p}$ and effective range $r_{\omega p}$ between the $\omega$ meson and proton are estimated from the shape of the total cross section as a function of the incident photon energy: $a_{\omega p} = \left(-0.97^{+0.16_{\rm stat}}_{-0.16_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.03_{\rm syst}}_{-0.00_{\rm syst}}\right)+i \left(0.07^{+0.15_{\rm stat}}_{-0.14_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.17_{\rm syst}}_{-0.09_{\rm syst}}\right)$ fm and $r_{\omega p}=\left(+2.78^{+0.68_{\rm stat}}_{-0.54_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.11_{\rm syst}}_{-0.13_{\rm syst}}\right)+i\left(-0.01^{+0.46_{\rm stat}}_{-0.50_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.07_{\rm syst}}_{-0.00_{\rm syst}}\right)$ fm, resulting in a repulsive force. The real and imaginary parts for $a_{\omega p}$ and $r_{\omega p}$ are determined separately for the first time. Coherent double neutral-pion photoproduction on the deuteron, $\gamma{d}${$\to$}$\pi^0\pi^0{d}$, has been experimentally studied at incident photon energies ranging from 0.75 to 1.15 GeV. The total cross section as a function of the $\gamma{d}$ center-of-mass energy shows resonance-like behavior, which peaks at approximately 2.47 and 2.63 GeV. The measured angular distribution of deuteron emission is rather flat, which cannot be reproduced by the kinematics of quasi-free $\pi^0\pi^0$ production with deuteron coalescence. In $\pi^0d $ invariant-mass distributions, a clear peak is observed at $2.14{\pm}0.01$ GeV$/c^2$ with a width of $0.09{\pm}0.01$ GeV$/c^2$. The spin-parity of this state is restricted to $1^+$, $2^+$ or $3^-$ from the angular distributions of the two $\pi^0$s. The present work shows strong evidence for the existence of an isovector dibaryon resonance with a mass of 2.14 GeV$/c^2$. The $2^+$ assignment is consistent with the theoretically predicted ${\cal{D}}_{12}$ state, and also with the energy dependence of the $\pi{d}$ partial-wave amplitude $^3\!P_2$ for the $\pi^{\pm}d${$\to$}$\pi^{\pm}d$ and $\pi^+d${$\to$}${pp}$ reactions., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Differential cross sections and photon-beam asymmetries for the gamma p -> pi- Delta++(1232) reaction have been measured for 0.7

We report the measurement of the $\gamma p \rightarrow K^{+}\Lambda$ and $\gamma p \rightarrow K^{+}\Sigma^{0}$ reactions at SPring-8. The differential cross sections and photon-beam asymmetries are measured at forward $K^{+}$ production angles using linearly polarized tagged-photon beams in the range of $E_{\gamma}=1.5$--3.0 GeV. With increasing photon energy, the cross sections for both $\gamma p \rightarrow K^{+}\Lambda$ and $\gamma p \rightarrow K^{+}\Sigma^{0}$ reactions decrease slowly. Distinct narrow structures in the production cross section have not been found at $E_{\gamma}=1.5$--3.0 GeV. The forward peaking in the angular distributions of cross sections, a characteristic feature of $t$-channel exchange, is observed for the production of $\Lambda$ in the whole observed energy range. A lack of similar feature for $\Sigma^{0}$ production reflects a less dominant role of $t$-channel contribution in this channel. The photon-beam asymmetries remain positive for both reactions, suggesting the dominance of $K^{*}$ exchange in the $t$ channel. These asymmetries increase gradually with the photon energy, and have a maximum value of +0.6 for both reactions. Comparison with theoretical predictions based on the Regge trajectory in the $t$ channel and the contributions of nucleon resonances indicates the major role of $t$-channel contributions as well as non-negligible effects of nucleon resonances in accounting for the reaction mechanism of hyperon photoproduction in this photon energy regime., Comment: published version, two-column format, 10 pages, 8 figures

The differential cross sections and decay angular distributions for coherent $\phi$-meson photoproduction from helium-4 have been measured for the first time at forward angles with linearly polarized photons in the energy range $E_{\gamma} = \text{1.685-2.385 GeV}$. Thanks to the target with spin-parity $J^{P} = 0^{+}$, unnatural-parity exchanges are prohibited, and thus natural-parity exchanges can be investigated clearly. The decay asymmetry with respect to photon polarization is shown to be very close to the maximal value. This ensures the dominance ($> 94\%$) of natural-parity exchanges in this reaction. To evaluate the contribution from natural-parity exchanges to the forward cross section ($\theta = 0^\circ$) for the $\gamma p \rightarrow \phi p$ reaction near the threshold, the energy dependence of the forward cross section ($\theta = 0^\circ$) for the $\gamma {^{4}\text{He}} \rightarrow \phi {^{4}\text{He}}$ reaction was analyzed. The comparison to $\gamma p \rightarrow \phi p$ data suggests that enhancement of the forward cross section arising from natural-parity exchanges, and/or destructive interference between natural-parity and unnatural-parity exchanges is needed in the $\gamma p \rightarrow \phi p$ reaction near the threshold., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Differential cross sections and photon beam asymmetries for the gamma p -> pi+ n reaction have been measured for 0.6

The total cross sections were measured for coherent double neutral-pion photoproduction on the deuteron at incident energies below 0.9 GeV for the first time. No clear resonance-like behavior is observed in the excitation function for $W_{\gamma d}=2.38$--2.61 GeV, where the $d^*(2380)$ dibaryon resonance observed at COSY is expected to appear. The measured excitation function is consistent with the existing theoretical calculation for this reaction. The upper limit of the total cross section is found to be $0.034$~$\mu$b for the dibaryon resonance at $W_{\gamma d}=2.37$~GeV (90\% confidence level) in the $\gamma d \to \pi^0\pi^0 d$ reaction., Comment: submitted to Physics Letters B

The $\phi$-$\Lambda(1520)$ interference effect in the $\gamma p\to K^+K^-p$ reaction has been measured for the first time in the energy range from 1.673 to 2.173 GeV. The relative phases between $\phi$ and $\Lambda(1520)$ production amplitudes were obtained in the kinematic region where the two resonances overlap. The measurement results support strong constructive interference when $K^+K^-$ pairs are observed at forward angles, but destructive interference for proton emission at forward angles. Furthermore, the observed interference effect does not account for the $\sqrt{s}=2.1$ GeV bump structure in forward differential cross sections for $\phi$ photoproduction. This fact suggests possible exotic structures such as a hidden-strangeness pentaquark state, a new Pomeron exchange and rescattering processes via other hyperon states.

We have developed an event mixing technique to observe Bose-Einstein correlations (BEC) between two identical neutral pions produced in photo-induced reactions in the non-perturbative QCD energy region. It is found that the missing-mass consistency cut and the pion-energy cut are essential for the event mixing method to effectively extract BEC observables. A Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is used to validate these constraints and confirms the efficiency of this method. Our work paves the way for similar BEC studies at lower energies where the multiplicity of emitted bosons is limited.

A search for $K^-pp$ bound state (the lightest kaonic nucleus) has been performed using the $\gamma d \rightarrow K^+ \pi^- \rm{X}$ reaction at E$_\gamma$=1.5-2.4 GeV at LEPS/SPring-8. The differential cross section of $K^+ \pi^-$ photo-production off deuterium has been measured for the first time in this energy region, and a bump structure was searched for in the inclusive missing mass spectrum. A statistically significant bump structure was not observed in the region from 2.22 to 2.36 GeV/$c^2$, and the upper limits of the differential cross section for the $K^-pp$ bound state production were determined to be 0.1$-$0.7 $\mu$ b (95$%$ confidence level) for a set of assumed binding energy and width values.

We report the measurement of differential cross sections for $\omega$ and $\eta'$ photoproduction from protons at backward angles ($-1.0<\cos\Theta_{C.M}^{X}<-0.8$) using linearly polarized photons at $E_{\gamma}=$$1.5-3.0$ GeV. Differential cross sections for $\omega$ mesons are larger than the predicted $u$-channel contribution in the energy range $2.0\leq\sqrt{s}\leq2.4$ GeV. The differential cross sections for $\omega$ and $\eta'$ mesons become closer to the predicted $u$-channel contribution at $\sqrt{s}>2.4$ GeV. A bump structure in the $\sqrt{s}$ dependence of the differential cross sections for $\eta'$ mesons was observed at $\sqrt{s}\sim$2.35 GeV., Comment: 15pages 4figures

The LEPS/SPring-8 experiment made a comprehensive measurement of the spin-density matrix elements for $\gamma p \to \phi p$, $\gamma d \to \phi p n$ and $\gamma d \to \phi d$ at forward production angles. A linearly polarized photon beam at $E_{\gamma}$=1.6-2.4 GeV was used for the production of $\phi$ mesons. The natural-parity Pomeron exchange processes remains dominant nearthreshold. The unnatural-parity processes of pseudoscalar exchange is visible in the production from nucleons but is greatly reduced in the coherent production from deuterons. There is no strong $E_{\gamma}$-dependence, but some dependence on momentum-transfer. A small but finite value of the spin-density matrix elements reflecting helicity-nonconserving amplitudes in the $t$-channel is observed., Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures

Differential cross sections for eta photoproduction off protons have been measured at E_gamma = 1.6 - 2.4 GeV in the backward direction. A bump structure has been observed above 2.0 GeV in the total energy. No such bump is observed in cross sections for eta', omega and pi0 photoproductions. It is inferred that this unique structure in eta photoproduction is due to a baryon resonance with a large portion of ss-bar strongly coupled to the etaN channel., Comment: 3 figures, Submitted to PRL

We report measurements of differential cross sections and decay asymmetries of incoherent $\phi$-meson photoproduction from the deuteron at forward angles using linearly polarized photons at \Eg=1.5-2.4 GeV. The nuclear transparency ratio for the deuteron shows a large suppression, and is consistent with the A-dependence of the ratio observed in a previous measurement with nuclear targets. The reduction for the deuteron cannot be adequately explained in term of isospin asymmetry. Proton decay from the 3$\hbar\omega$ isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR) in $^{58}$Ni has been measured using the ($\alpha,\alpha'p$) reaction at a bombarding energy of 386 MeV to investigate its decay properties. We have extracted the ISGDR strength under the coincidence condition between inelastically scattered $\alpha$ particles at forward angles and decay protons emitted at backward angles. Branching ratios for proton decay to low-lying states of $^{57}$Co have been determined, and the results compared to predictions of recent continuum-RPA calculations. The final-state spectra of protons decaying to the low-lying states in $^{57}$Co were analyzed for a more detailed understanding of the structure of the ISGDR. Photoproduction of $\Lambda$(1520) with liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets was examined at photon energies below 2.4 GeV in the SPring-8 LEPS experiment. For the first time, the differential cross sections were measured at low energies and with a deuterium target. A large asymmetry of the production cross sections from protons and neutrons was observed at backward K$^{+/0}$ angles. This suggests the importance of the contact term, which coexists with t-channel K exchange under gauge invariance. This interpretation was compatible with the differential cross sections, decay asymmetry, and photon beam asymmetry measured in the production from protons at forward K$^+$ angles., Comment: 5 pages and 4 figures. The excitation and subsequent proton decay of the isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR) in $^{208}$Pb have been investigated via the $^{208}$Pb($\alpha, \alpha^{\prime}p)^{207}$Tl reaction at 400 MeV. Excitation of the ISGDR has been identified by the difference-of-spectra method. The enhancement of the ISGDR strength at high excitation energies observed in the multipole-decomposition-analysis of the singles $^{208}$Pb($\alpha,\alpha^{\prime}$) spectra is not present in the excitation energy spectrum obtained in coincidence measurement. The \gamma d \to K^+K^-pn reaction has been studied to search for the evidence of the \Theta^+ by detecting K^+K^- pairs at forward angles. The Fermi-motion corrected nK^+ invariant mass distribution shows a narrow peak at 1.524 +- 0.002 + 0.003 GeV/c^2. The statistical significance of the peak calculated from a shape analysis is 5.1 \sigma, and the differential cross-section for the \gamma n \to K^- \Theta^+ reaction is estimated to be 12 +- 2 nb/sr in the photon energy range from 2.0 GeV to 2.4 GeV in the LEPS angular range by assuming the isotropic production of the \Theta^+ in the \gamma n center-of-mass system. Differential cross sections for $\gamma p \to K^+\Lambda(1405)$ and $\gamma p \to K^+\Sigma^0(1385)$ reactions have been measured in the photon energy range from 1.5 to 2.4 GeV and the angular range of $0.8<\cos(\Theta)<1.0$ for the $K^+$ scattering angle in the center-of-mass system. This data is the first measurement of the $\Lambda(1405)$ photoproduction cross section. The lineshapes of \LamS measured in $\Sigma^+\pi^-$ and $\Sigma^-\pi^+$ decay modes were different with each other, indicating a strong interference of the isospin 0 and 1 terms of the $\Sigma\pi$ scattering amplitudes. Differential cross sections and decay asymmetries for coherent $\phi$-meson photoproduction from deuterons were measured for the first time at forward angles using linearly polarized photons at $E_{\gamma}$= 1.5-2.4 GeV. We have measured de-excitation gamma-rays from the s-hole state in 15N produced via the 16O(p,2p)15N reaction in relation to the study of the nucleon decay and the neutrino neutral-current interaction in water Cherenkov detectors. In the excitation-energy region of the s-hole state between 16 MeV and 40 MeV in 15N, the branching ratio of emitting gamma-rays with the energies at more-than-6 MeV are found to be 15.6+-1.3+0.6-1.0%. Taking into account the spectroscopic factor of the s-hole state, the total emission probability is found to be 3.1%. This is about 1/10 compared with the emission probability of the 6.32 MeV gamma-ray from the 3/2- p-hole state in 15N. Moreover, we searched for a 15.1 MeV gamma-ray from the 12C 1+ state which may be populated after the particle-decay of the s-hole state in 15N. Such a high energy gamma-ray from the hole state would provide a new method to search for mode-independent nucleon decay even if the emission probability is small. No significant signal is found within a statistical uncertainty.

The strength distribution of the isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR) in $^{58}$Ni has been obtained over the energy range 10.5--49.5 MeV via extreme forward angle scattering (including 0$^{\circ}$) of 386 MeV $\alpha$ particles. We observe a ``bi-modal'' ${E1}$ strength distribution for the first time in an A $<$ 90 nucleus. Photoproduction of $\phi$-meson on protons was studied by means of linearly polarized photons at forward angles in the low-energy region from threshold to $E_{\gamma}$= 2.37 GeV. The differential cross sections at $t = -|t|_{min}$ do not increase smoothly as $E_{\gamma}$ increases, but show a local maximum at around 2.0 GeV. The cross section of the ${}^{16}{\rm O}(p,p'){}^{16}{\rm O}(0^-,T=1)$ scattering was measured at a bombarding energy of 295 MeV in the momentum transfer range of $1.0 \mathrm{fm^{-1}}$ $\le$ $q_{\rm c.m.}$ $\le$ $2.1 \mathrm{fm^{-1}}$. The isovector $0^-$ state at $E_x$ = 12.8 MeV is clearly separated from its neighboring states owing to the high energy resolution of about 30 keV. The cross section data were compared with distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA) calculations employing shell-model wave functions. The observed cross sections around $q_{\rm c.m.}$ $\simeq$ $1.7 {\rm fm^{-1}}$ are significantly larger than predicted by these calculations, suggesting pionic enhancement as a precursor of pion condensation in nuclei. The photo-production of $\phi$ mesons from Li, C, Al, and Cu at forward angles has been measured at $E_gamma$=1.5--2.4 GeV. The number of events for incoherent phi photo-production is found to have a target mass number dependence of $A^{0.72\pm 0.07}$ in the kinematical region of $|t|\le 0.6$ ${\rm GeV}^2/c^2$. The total cross section of the $\phi$-nucleon interaction, $\sigma_{\phi N}$, has been estimated as $35^{+17}_{-11}$ mb using the $A$-dependence of the $\phi$ photo-production yield and a Glauber-type multiple scattering theory. The $^{11}$B($^3$He$, t$), $^{11}$B($d, d'$), and $^{11}$B($p, p'$) reactions were measured at forward scattering angles including $0^\circ$ to study the isovector and isoscalar spin-flip M1 strengths in $^{11}$B. The measured $^{11}$B($^3$He$, t$) cross sections were compared with the results of the distorted-wave impulse-approximation (DWIA) calculation, and the Gamow-Teller (GT) strengths for low-lying states in $^{11}$C were determined. The GT strengths were converted to the isovector spin-flip M1 strengths using the isobaric analog relations under the assumption of the isospin symmetry. The isoscalar spin-flip M1 strengths were obtained from the ($d, d'$) analysis by assuming that the shape of the collective transition form factor with the same ${\Delta}J^\pi$ is similar in the $^{11}$B($d, d'$) and $^{12}$C($d, d'$) reactions. The obtained isovector and isoscalar strengths were used in the DWIA calculations for the $^{11}$B($p, p'$) reaction. The DWIA calculation reasonably well explains the present $^{11}$B($p, p'$) result. However, the calculated cross section for the 8.92-MeV 3/2$^-_2$ state was significantly smaller than the experimental values. The transition strengths obtained in the shell-model calculations were found to be 20-50% larger than the experimental strengths. The transition strengths for the neutrino induced reactions were estimated by using the isovector and isoscalar spin-flip M1 strengths. The present results are quantitatively in agreement with the theoretical estimation discussing the axial isoscalar coupling in the neutrino scattering process, and are useful in the measurement of the stellar neutrinos using the neutral- and charged-current reactions on $^{11}$B.

Beam polarization asymmetries for the p(gamma,K+)Lambda and p(gamma,K+)sigma0 reactions are measured for the first time for Egamma=1.5-2.4 GeV and 0.6

Cross sections and polarization transfer observables in the $^{16}$O$(p,p')$ reactions at 392 MeV were measured at several angles between $\theta_{lab}=$ 0$^\circ$ and 14$^\circ$. The non-spin-flip (${\Delta}S=0$) and spin-flip (${\Delta}S=1$) strengths in transitions to several discrete states and broad resonances in $^{16}$O were extracted using a model-independent method. The giant resonances in the energy region of $E_x=19-$27 MeV were found to be predominantly excited by ${\Delta}L=1$ transitions. The strength distribution of spin-dipole transitions with ${\Delta}S=1$ and ${\Delta}L=1$ were deduced. The obtained distribution was compared with a recent shell model calculation. The isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR) has been investigated in 208Pb using inelastic scattering of 400 MeV alpha particles at forward angles, including 0deg. Using the superior capabilities of the Grand Raiden spectrometer, it has been possible to obtain spectra devoid of any "instrumental" background. The ISGDR strength distribution has been extracted from a multipole-composition of the observed spectra. A windowless and self-supporting ice target is described. An ice sheet with a thickness of 29.7 mg/cm$^2$ cooled by liquid nitrogen was placed at the target position of a magnetic spectrometer and worked stably in the $^{16}$O$(p,p')$ experiment at $E_{p}=392$ MeV. Decay via proton emission of isobaric analog states (IAS's) in $^{91}{Nb}$ was studied using the $^{90}{Zr}(\alpha,t)$ reaction at $E_\alpha$=180 MeV. This study provides information about the damping mechanism of these states. Decay to the ground state and low-lying phonon states in $^{90}{Zr}$ was observed. The experimental data are compared with theoretical predictions wherein the IAS `single-particle' proton escape widths are calculated in a continuum RPA approach. The branching ratios for decay to the phonon states are explained using a simple model., Comment: 3 figures. submitted to Phys. Lett. B

Discrete Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions, 176Yb-->176Lu at low excitation energies have been measured via the (3He,t) reaction at 450 MeV and at 0 degrees. For 176Yb, two low-lying states are observed, setting low thresholds Q(neutrino)=301 and 445 keV for neutrino capture. Capture rates estimated from the measured GT strengths, the simple two-state excitation structure, and the low Q(neutrino) in Yb--Lu indicate that Yb-based neutrino-detectors are well suited for a direct measurement of the complete sub-MeV solar electron-neutrino spectrum (including pp neutrinos) where definitive effects of flavor conversion are expected.
