8. Charged polyacrylamide gels for capillary electrochromatographic separations of uncharged, low molecular weight compounds

Abstract

The polyacrylamide gels described here have the ability to separate uncharged substances of comparatively low molecular weight due to the built-in, negatively charged functional groups. The functional groups permit the development of electroosmotic flow under the influence of a high voltage, which makes possible capillary electrochromatographic separations of uncharged compounds. The effects of gel compositions on the column performance were examined. Migration time reproducibilities of 0.43% RSD or less were found with the gel-filled capillary columns. Possible insight into the separation mechanisms is discussed.

Abstract

Practical interfacing of chromatography (gas or GC, supercritical fluid or SFC, liquid or LC) and Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry involves two major routes. The flow cell method, effective for GC but not for LC, measures the spectra as the eluate bearing the sample passes through a flow cell with IR-transparent windows. IR-absorbance of the mobile phase limits its detection minimum to 10- 50 ng. This drawback is overcome in the mobile-phase-elimination technique. By evaporating the eluent before spectral reading, detection limits as low as 15 pg have been achieved. More complex interfacing makes these hyphenated analytical techniques even more sensitive.

15. Enantiomer Separation by Capillary Electrochromatography Using Fritless Packed Columns

Abstract

This review summarizes recent developments in the field of enantiomer separation by capillary electrochromatography using fritless packed columns. Various enantiomers have been separated by employing fritless packed columns prepared in a fused silica capillary either by the immobilization of chiral packing materials by sintering or sol-gel technology or by in situ polymerization of a mixture containing chiral selectors. The details of the column preparation procedures and the attainable column performance are described.

40. Micro-High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Inductively Coupled Plasma Combination Technique in Analysis of Organometallic Compounds

Abstract

The combination technique of micro-high performance liquid chromatography and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (micro-HPLC-ICP) is demonstrated in the separation of organometallic compounds. Problems relating to the interfacing between micro-HPLC and ICP-atomic emission spectrometry could be eliminated by utilizing the simple interfacing devices in both reversed and normal phase LC modes.
