Methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) is a group of planktonic microorganisms that use methane as their primary source of cellular energy. For tropical lakes in monsoon Asia, there is currently a knowledge gap on MOB community diversity and the factors influencing their abundance. Herewith, we present a preliminary assessment of the MOB communities in three maar lakes in tropical monsoon Asia using Catalyzed Reporter Deposition, Fluorescence In-Situ Hybridization (CARD-FISH), 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, and pmoA gene sequencing. Correlation analysis between MOB abundances and lakes’ physicochemical parameters following seasonal monsoon events were performed to explain observed spatial and temporal patterns in MOB diversity. The CARD-FISH analyses detected the three MOB types (I, II, and NC10) which aligned with the results from 16S rRNA amplicons and pmoA gene sequencing. Among community members based on 16S rRNA genes, Proteobacterial Type I MOB (e.g., Methylococcaceae and Methylomonadaceae), Proteobacterial Type II (Methylocystaceae), Verrucomicrobial (Methylacidiphilaceae), Methylomirabilota/NC10 (Methylomirabilaceae), and archaeal ANME-1a were found to be the dominant methane-oxidizers in three maar lakes. Analysis of microbial diversity and distribution revealed that the community compositions in Lake Yambo vary with the seasons and are more distinct during the stratified period. Temperature, DO, and pH were significantly and inversely linked with type I MOB and Methylomirabilota during stratification. Only MOB type I was influenced by monsoon changes. This research sought to establish a baseline for the diversity and ecology of planktonic MOB in tropical monsoon Asia to better comprehend their contribution to the CH4 cycle in tropical freshwater ecosystems.

ABSTRACT Trade-offs between competitive ability and resistance to top-down control manifest the “kill-the-winner” hypothesis that explains how mortality caused by protists and viruses can promote bacterial diversity. However, the existence of such trade-offs has rarely been investigated in natural marine bacterial communities. To address this question, we conducted on-board dilution experiments to manipulate top-down control pressure (protists only or protists plus viruses [protists+viruses] combined) and then applied 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing techniques to assess the responses of each bacterial taxon. Dilution experiments enabled us to measure the top-down-control-free growth rate as the competitive ability and top-down-control-caused mortality as the reverse of resistance to top-down control. Overall, bacterial taxa with higher top-down-control-free growth rates were accompanied by lower top-down-control-caused resistance. Furthermore, competition-resistance trade-offs were stronger and more consistent when top-down control was caused by protists+viruses combined than by protists only. When protists+viruses were diluted, the bacterial rank abundance distribution became steepened and evenness and richness were decreased. However, when protists were diluted, only richness decreased. Our results indicate the existence of competition-resistance trade-offs in marine microbes and demonstrate the positive impacts of such trade-offs on bacterial diversity. Regardless, the strength of the competition-resistance trade-offs and the impacts on bacterial diversity were contingent on whether top-down control was caused by protists+viruses combined or protists only. IMPORTANCE We addressed the “kill-the-winner” hypothesis from the perspective of its principle (the competition-resistance trade-off) in marine bacterial communities incubated in situ. Our results supported the existence of competition-resistance trade-offs and the positive effect on bacterial community diversity. The study linked theoretical expectations and complex natural systems and provided new knowledge regarding how top-down controls and competition trade-offs shaped natural bacterial communities.

ABSTRACT The presence of more species in the community of a sampling site (α diversity) typically increases ecosystem functions via nonrandom processes like resource partitioning. When considering multiple communities, we hypothesize that higher compositional difference (β diversity) increases overall functions of these communities. Further, we hypothesize that the β diversity effect is more positive when β diversity is increased by nonrandom assembly processes. To test these hypotheses, we collected bacterioplankton along a transect of 6 sampling sites in the southern East China Sea in 14 cruises. For any pairs of the 6 sites within a cruise, we calculated the Bray-Curtis index to represent β diversity and summed bacterial biomass as a proxy to indicate the overall function of the two communities. We then calculated deviation of observed mean pairwise phylogenetic similarities among species in two communities from random to represent the influences of nonrandom processes. The bacterial β diversity was found to positively affect the summed bacterial biomass; however, the effect varied among cruises. Cross-cruise comparison indicated that the β diversity effect increased with the nonrandom processes selecting for phylogenetically dissimilar species. This study extends biodiversity-ecosystem functioning research to the scale of multiple sites and enriches the framework by considering community assembly processes. IMPORTANCE The implications of our analyses are twofold. First, we emphasize the importance of studying β diversity. We expanded the current biodiversity-ecosystem functioning framework from single to multiple sampling sites and investigated the influences of species compositional differences among sites on the overall functioning of these sites. Since natural ecological communities never exist alone, our analyses allow us to more holistically perceive the role of biodiversity in natural ecosystems. Second, we took community assembly processes into account to attain a more mechanistic understanding of the impacts of biodiversity on ecosystem functioning.

Assessing water resources availability in a changing climate is a determinant of promoting sustainable development in a region. Such assessment should better be inter-basin in order to unveil a region’s overall risk, so a time-varying Budyko framework is developed and adopted in this study. Gauge-based gridded precipitation and temperature, in company with runoff data, were used to derive the Budyko curves for 75 catchments over Taiwan. Downscaled precipitation and temperature data from selected global climate models and Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) were then used to calculate the shifts in the Budyko space of each catchment. It was found that the Budyko-related variables (e.g., evaporative and aridity indices, and catchment-specific parameter) exhibited considerable variability island-wide, with a few outliers in certain catchments being modulated by distinct landscape features and/or human activities. Under all RCPs analyzed, the majority of catchments showed the magnified movement vectors pointing at the 1st quadrant in the Budyko space in the late-21st century, suggesting a predominant and aggravating drying trend over Taiwan. Cluster analysis of the movement vectors under RCP8.5, which entailed the least inter-model differences, identified three major clusters, two of which (64 catchments included) indicated a drying trend of varied significancy. According to our findings, without effective mitigation of climate change, an increased likelihood of the worst-case scenario will substantialize the reduced availability of Taiwan’s water resources.

Disentangling causal interactions among biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and environmental factors is key to understanding how ecosystems respond to changing environment. This study presents a global scale analysis quantifying causal interactions and feedbacks among phytoplankton diversity, biomass and nutrients along environmental gradients of aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract In open oceans, changes in mixed layer depth (MLD) may affect phytoplankton growth and biomass variations via the regulation of nutrient supply from deep waters. Estimates of relationships between variability in phytoplankton dynamics and the MLD remain limited, especially at different time scales. We compiled and analyzed averaged euphotic‐depth‐integrated chlorophyll‐a (IChl‐a) and surface chlorophyll‐a (SChl‐a) concentrations collected from 27 cruises during the period of 1999–2019 in the tropical northern South China Sea (SCS). Seasonal differences existed in both averaged IChl‐a and SChl‐a concentrations, with significantly high concentrations in the cold season. Inconsistent relationships between the averaged IChl‐a and SChl‐a concentrations between seasons implied that the use of SChl‐a concentration as a common indicator of phytoplankton biomass dynamics should be performed with caution. Over the past decades in the northern SCS, the averaged IChl‐a, SChl‐a, and MLD decreased to a greater extent in the cold season than in the warm season, while sea surface temperature (SST) rose rapidly and dramatically in both seasons. The MLD was observed to have better correlations with the averaged IChl‐a and SChl‐a concentrations than the SST in the time‐series data. Our results highlight the importance of IChl‐a concentration, which is an overall measure of phytoplankton responses to euphotic zone conditions, and the MLD could be used as a good index for changes in phytoplankton biomass under climate change.

Hypoxia and upwelling co-occur in the summer, and well-mixed water typically reaches the subsurface in the East China Sea (ECS), especially off the Changjiang River estuary. The impact of upwelling on hypoxia and, therefore, on the ecosystem in the ECS is not known. This study demonstrates both positive and negative effects of upwelling on hypoxia and its impact on the ecosystem. With upwelling, the spatial extent of hypoxic water increases with a lower pH but waters with high regenerated nutrients and fugacity of CO2 (fCO2), which are normally confined to the near-bottom, are found just up to 5–10 m below the surface. This upwelled high nutrient water can enhance phytoplankton growth in this region. On one occasion in August 2014, upwelling reached to the surface and lasted for 3 weeks, with the area of coverage ranging from 326.8 to 24,368.0 km2. During this event, the water was mixed thoroughly throughout the water column, with high concentrations of nutrients, chlorophyll a, and slightly undersaturated dissolved oxygen but saturated fCO2, alongside a normal pH. This event may have served as an important pathway from the ocean to the atmosphere for the regenerated CO2. It also provided a productive and suitable environment for marine life and ventilation to alleviate low-oxygen stress in this hypoxic but upwelling region in the ECS.

Satellite-based observations of primary production (PP) are broadly used to assess carbon fixation rate of phytoplankton in the global ocean with small spatiotemporal limitations. However, the remote sensing can only reach the ocean surface, the assumption of a PP vertically exponential decrease with increasing depth from the surface to the bottom of euphotic zone may cause a substantial and potential discrepancy between in situ measurements and satellite-based observations of PP. This study compared euphotic zone integrated PP derived from measurements based on ship-based in situ incubation (i.e., PPin situ) and those derived from the satellite-based vertically generalized production model (VGPM; PPVGPM) for the period 2003∼2016 at the South East Asian Time-series Study (SEATS) station. PP values obtained during the NE-monsoon (NEM: Nov∼Mar; PPin situ = 323 ± 134; PPVGPM = 443 ± 142 mg-C m–2 d–1) were ∼2-fold higher than those recorded during the SW-monsoon (SWM: Apr∼Oct; PPin situ = 159 ± 58; PPVGPM = 250 ± 36 mg-C m–2 d–1), regardless of the method used for derivation. The main reason for the higher PP values during the NEM appears to have been a greater abundance of inorganic nutrients were made available by vertical advection. Note that on average, PPin situ estimates were ∼50% lower than PPVGPM estimates, regardless of the monsoon. These discrepancies can be mainly attributed to differences from the euphotic zone depth between satellite-based and in situ measurements. The significantly negative relationship between PP measurements obtained in situ and sea surface temperatures observed throughout this study demonstrates that both methods are effective indicators in estimating PP. Overall, our PPin situ analysis indicates that a warming climate is unfavorable for primary production in low-latitude open ocean ecosystems.

Eight diel surveys on picoplankton (Prochlorococcus, Synechococcus, picoeukaryotes, and heterotrophic bacteria) abundance at the South East Asian Time-Series Station (SEATS; 18°N; 116°E) were conducted during the period of 2010 to 2014. The results indicated that Prochlorococcus and picoeukaryotes showed a subsurface maximum in warm seasons (spring, summer, and fall) and were abundant at the surface in the cold season (winter). Synechococcus and heterotrophic bacteria exhibited higher cell numbers at the surface and decreased with depth throughout the year. Although not all, some clear diel patterns for picoplankton were observed. Picophytoplankton usually peaked in the nighttime; picoeukaryotes peaked at ~7 to 8 p.m., followed by Synechococcus (peaking at 1 a.m.) and Prochlorococcus (peaking at 2 a.m.). Unlike these picoautotrophs, heterotrophic bacteria could peak either at dusk (i.e., 7 p.m.) or at noon. Seasonally, Prochlorococcus was more abundant in the warm than the cold seasons, while Synechococcus and picoeukaryotes showed blooms in the winter of 2013 and 2011, respectively. Heterotrophic bacteria showed no significant seasonality. Regression analysis indicated that ~73% of the diel-to-seasonal variation of the euphotic zone depth-integrated picophytoplankton biomass (i.e., PicoBeu) could be explained by the changes of the mixed-layer depth (MLD), and this suggested that inorganic nutrient supply could be the major controlling factor in their growth. The strong linear relationship (coefficient of determination, R2 of 0.83, p < 0.01) between sea surface temperature (SST) and PicoBeu implied, for the first time, a potential of using satellite-based SST to trace the biomass of picophytoplankton in the pelagic areas of the northern South China Sea.

Biogeochemical responses to mixing were examined in two cruise surveys along a transect across the Kuroshio Current (KC) in May and July 2020. Two stations located at the South China Sea (SCS)–KC mixing and the KC waters were chosen for the diel study. In the euphotic zone (~100 m depth), the average values of nitrate (0.97–1.62 μM), chlorophyll-a (Chl-a, 0.36–0.40 mg/m3), and primary production (PP; 3.46 ± 1.37 mgC/m3/day) of the mixing water station (MWS) of the two cruises were several folds higher than those of the KC station (KCS; nitrate, 0.03–0.10 μM; Chl-a, 0.14–0.24 mg/m3; and PP, 0.91 ± 0.47 mgC/m3/day). In the July cruise, the maximal bacterial production (BP) at the MWS (3.31 mgC/m3/day) was 82% higher in comparison with that of the KCS (1.82 mgC/m3/day); and the readings of Chl-a showed no trend with BP in the oligotrophic KCS, but a positive relationship was found among these measurements at the mesotrophic MWS. This implies that the trophic status of the system might affect phytoplankton–bacteria interactions. The backward-trajectory analyses conducted by an observation-validated three-dimensional model identified that the prevailing southwest monsoon drove a northeastward “intrusion” of the SCS waters in July 2020, resulted in mixing between SCS and Kuroshio (KC) waters off the east coast of southern Taiwan. For the first time, this study demonstrates that the high biological biomass and activities that occur in the KC are induced by the northward intrusion of the SCS waters.

Predator and prey α-diversities are often positively associated; yet, understandings of the underlying mechanisms require manipulative experiments and thus remain unclear. We attempt to address this issue by deciphering how α-diversity of predator and prey influences each other’s community assembly processes, which subsequently determine their α-diversity. The occurrence of assembly processes was indicated by the mean pairwise taxonomic index within a community (αMPTI), assuming assembly processes left traceable imprints on species’ phylogeny. Specifically, αMPTI quantifies deviations of observed phylogenetic distances from that of random, so that it can be used to hint at the occurrence of non-random/deterministic assembly processes. Larger αMPTI of a community implies the occurrence of weaker homogenizing deterministic assembly processes, which suggests that this community might be comprised of less similar species and thus has higher α-diversity. We hypothesize that higher predator and prey α-diversity would be positively associated with each other’s αMPTI, which would then be positively associated with their α-diversity. To test the hypothesis, we calculated Shannon diversity and αMPTI for heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF; predator) and bacteria (prey) communities in the East China Sea (ECS). The HNF Shannon diversity was found to be positively associated with αMPTI of bacteria, which was then positively associated with bacterial Shannon diversity. In contrast, bacterial Shannon diversity did not correlate with HNF’s αMPTI. We argue that top-down control is one of the explanations to the positive α-diversity association among trophic levels in microbes of the ECS.

Dissolved primary production (DPP), particulate primaryproduction (PPP), and the subsequent bacterial production (BP) and respiration (BR) were reported for the first time in the NW Pacific. The study area of the subtropical southern East China Sea covers different water types, including oligotrophic Kuroshio and Taiwan Strait waters, as well as nutrient-rich China coastal and upwelled Kuroshio subsurface waters. On an areal basis, DPP and PPP ranged from 67–1649 and 160–1182 mgC m–2 d–1, respectively, showing high values in the upwelling area. The contribution of DPP to total primary production (percent extracellular release; PER) averaged 40.8 ± 12.2% with >50% in the upwelling stations. The BP and BR ranged from 48–245 and 709–2822 mgC m–2 d–1, respectively, showing patterns similar to those of primary production. Bacterial growth efficiency (BGE) averaged 5.7 ± 1.4%, representing the lower end of global ocean values. Phytoplankton and bacteria were well coupled in the upwelling area, whereas primary production could not sustain the bacterial carbon demand (BCD) at other stations. The slope of the log–log relationship between DPP and PPP was >1, indicating that the microbial loop may receive relatively less organic carbon supply in the future warmer, less productive ocean.

The short-term variabilities in temperature, salinity, nitrate, chlorophyll a (Chl a), and carbonate chemistry data (i.e., pH, partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2), total alkalinity, and dissolved inorganic carbon) were concurrently investigated in the shallow (∼50 m) and deep (∼300 m) water areas around Dongsha Atoll of the northern South China Sea (NSCS). The results show that surface temperature and pCO2 were lower but that upward nitrate flux and Chl a were higher in the upper euphotic zone at the shallow-water area than those at the deep-water area. We suggest that the observed contrasting biogeochemical properties between the two areas could be attributed to the impact of topography-flow interaction. As tidal currents (or any other horizontal currents) interacted with the shallow topography, they may induce vertical isotherm displacements (e.g., internal tides/internal waves) that may enhance turbulent mixing, and thus can transport more nutrient-replete subsurface water into the euphotic zone and stimulate phytoplankton production. The stimulated biological production and the cooling effect induced by topography-flow interaction may collectively drive surface pCO2 down in the shallow water area. Though the present short-term hydrological and CO2 data, which to our knowledge were concurrently investigated for the first time in the NSCS, reveal that the topography-flow interaction could be a favorable mechanism for atmospheric CO2 uptake around Dongsha Atoll, more long-term observations are still needed to confirm that the similar processes can repetitively take place in topography-flow interaction prevalent areas.

Mechanisms in controlling the growth of heterotrophic bacteria have seldom been explored in the tropical South China Sea (SCS). This study reports the tempo-spatial distribution patterns and the controlling mechanisms of bacterial biomass (BB), production (BP), and specific growth rate (Bμ) from one summer (Jun 2010; 4 transects) and two winter (January and December 2011; one transect each) cruises along the northern SCS-shelf. In summer, all three bacterial variables showed strong gradients with greater readings at the inner-shelf then decreasing seaward. The positive correlations of bacterial production rate (BP) and bacterial specific growth rate (Bμ), with primary production (PP), chlorophyll-a, and dissolved organic carbon observed in summer indicate a high possibility of bottom-up (substrate supply) control. Positive bacterial temperature response was observed in the inner to mid-shelf area in winter. There, Bμ changed proportionally with temperature up to ca. 22°C. The Q10 (the increase of reaction rate for a temperature rise of 10°C) for Bμ was ~4.0, which was in the range reported by coastal studies. Very high BP/PP ratios (summer average: 89 ± 92%; winter average: 131 ± 88%) indicated bacteria carbon demand relied heavily on allochthonous organic carbon sources such as river input and re-suspension processes, and that the SCS-shelf might be net heterotrophic in these two seasons. In winter, BP/PP ratios changed positively with temperature in areas inside the mid-shelf, suggesting that the coastal zone might become a stronger CO2 source during cold season under a warming climate, if anthropogenic loadings of inorganic nutrients and organic matter remain high in the future.

Empirical evidence suggests that the frequency/intensity of extreme weather events might increase in a warming climate. It remains unclear how these events quantitatively impact dissolved organic carbon (DOC), a pool approximately equal to CO2 in the atmosphere. This study conducted a weekly-to-biweekly sampling in a deep subtropical reservoir in the typhoon-prevailing season (June to September) from 2004 to 2009, at which 33 typhoons with distinctive precipitation (−1) had passed the study site. Our analyses indicated that the phosphate (i.e., DIP; −1) behaved as a positive function of DIP, and DOC concentrations (54~119 µMC) changed negatively with bacterial production (1.2~26.1 mgC m−3 d−1). These implied that the elevated DIP-loading in the hyperpycnal flow induced by typhoons could fuel bacteria growth and cause a significant decline of DOC concentrations. As the typhoon’s intensity increases, many mineral-limited lentic freshwater ecosystems might become more like a CO2 source injecting more CO2 back to the atmosphere, creating a positive feedback loop that might generate severer extreme weather events.

Ocean litter has accumulated rapidly and is becoming a major environmental concern, yet quantitative and regular observations and exploration that track litter origins are limited. By implementing monthly sample collections over five years (2012–2016) at Dongsha Island, a remote island in the northern South China Sea (SCS), we assessed macro ocean litter dynamics, identified source countries of individual plastic bottles, and analyzed the origins of the litter by a backward-tracking model simulation considering both the effects of current velocity and windage. The results showed that large amounts of litter, which varied monthly and annually in weight and quantity, reached the island during the study years, and there were spatial differences in accumulation patterns between the north and south coasts. Styrofoam and plastic bottles were the two primary sources of macro ocean litter both annually and monthly, and most of the litter collected on the island originated from China and Vietnam, which were collectively responsible for approximately 47.5%–63.7% per month. The simulation indicated that current advection at the near-surface depths and low windage at the sea surface showed similar patterns, while medium to high windage exhibited comparable expression patterns in response to potential source regions and drifting time experiments. At either the surface with low windage or current advection at depths of 0.5 m and 1 m, macro ocean litter in the Western Philippine Sea, i.e. through the Luzon Strait between Taiwan and the Philippines, was an important contributor to the litter bulk from October to March, whereas the litter was predicted to mainly originate from the southwestern SCS from April to September. With an increasing windage effect, litter in the Taiwan Strait was predicted to be an additional major potential source. Surprisingly, a small proportion of the macro ocean litter was predicted to continuously travel in the northern SCS for a long duration (> 2 years) before drifting onto Dongsha Island. The estimated drifting time of macro ocean litter also showed monthly and directional variability. This study demonstrated that a tremendous quantity of macro ocean litter, which may cause great damage to the marine ecosystem, drifts in the ocean surface layer and is finally pushed onto beaches. Therefore, we proposed an action plan for effective ocean litter management development at regional and global spatial scales, which is vital for improving and restoring the health and sustainability of the oceanic environment.

Information on riverine phosphorus (P) dynamics during typhoon storm events remains scarce in subtropical regions. Thus, this study investigates the spatial and temporal dynamics of riverine phosphorus in a headwater catchment during three typhoon events. Continuous sampling (3 h intervals) of stormwater samples and discharge data were conducted at five locations, which represent the upstream, transitional zone, and downstream areas of the main inflow river. The results revealed that the average event mean concentrations (EMCs) for total dissolved phosphorus (TDP) and particulate phosphorus (PP) in the upstream catchment of Fei-Tsui reservoir were 15.66 μg/L and 11.94 μg/L, respectively. There was at least a 1.3-fold increase in flow-weighted concentrations of TDP and PP from the upper to lower reaches of the main stream. PP and TDP were transported either in clockwise or anticlockwise directions, depending on storm intensity and source. The transport of TDP was primarily regulated by the subsurface flow during the storm event. Soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) contributes more than 50% of the TDP load in moderate storms, while extreme storms supply a greater dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) load into the stream. TDP accounted for approximately 50% of TP load during typhoon storms. Mobilization of all P forms was observed from upstream to downstream of the river, except for DOP. A decrease of DOP load on passing downstream may reflect the change in phosphorus form along the river continuum. Peak discharge and antecedent dry days are correlated positively with P fluxes, indicating that river bank erosion and re-suspension of within-channel sediment are the dominant pathways of P during typhoon storm periods.

This study evaluates the long term trends and seasonal patterns of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration in the Fei-Tsui Reservoir basin in Northern Taiwan during the period of 2000 to 2015. The non-parametric seasonal Mann-Kendall test was conducted to identify the trends of DOC and its potential drivers (e.g., temperature, runoff, atmospheric acid deposition and stream water chemistry). The monthly tributaries and water surface DOC concentrations in Fei-Tsui Reservoir had showed strong temporal and seasonal variability. The sulfate (SO4) concentration had exhibited statistically significant decreasing trend over a period of 16 years. The decreasing trends of anions (SO4 and NO3) and base cations (Ca and Mg) as well as increasing trends of pH and acidification index (ACI) in Fei-Tsui Reservoir and streams indicated recovery from acidification. However, there was no significant annual trend in DOC concentration of Fei-Tsui Reservoir and streams. Significant positive correlation was obtained between DOC and trophic state index of Fei-Tsui Reservoir. The results suggested that DOC concentration at the water surface of Fei-Tsui Reservoir was mainly driven by the re-oligotrophication and temperature effects rather than a decrease in atmospheric sulfur deposition. Stream DOC concentration was largely determined by the temporal variability in temperature and rainfall. We concluded that climatic and hydrological factors are the dominant drivers for stream DOC dynamics in the study.

This study examined the seasonal dynamics of the bacteria, Synechococcus spp. and their nanoflagellate grazers in the Danshui River estuary in northern Taiwan and compared the variations in microbes (bacteria, Synechococcus spp. and nanoflagellate) dynamics under different (clear vs. stormy) weather conditions. Temporal variations in chlorophyll a concentrations, bacterial production, bacteria and Synechococcus spp. abundance were related to temperature, with higher values during the warmer seasons. Spatial variations in Synechococcus spp. were related to chlorophyll a concentrations and in bacterial production and abundance related to chlorophyll a concentrations when temperature is above 20¢XC (April, August, and October). Spatial variations in nanoflagellates were related to oscillations in bacterial abundance or production during non-rainy periods. We conclude that heavy freshwater input to the estuary carries a large quantity of riverine bacteria which might disrupt the relationship between bacterial and nanoflagellate abundance during rainfall events.

To investigate the spatial and temporal variation of phytoplankton and copepods, eight seasonal cruises (January 2005 ~ Oc to ber 2006) were conducted in a subtropical coast site that encom passed 19 sampling stations. The results in dicated that the temperature (18.4 - 29.7°C) varied more than 10°C seasonally, while nutrient concentrations (ni trate: 0.4 - 6.3 mM, phosphate: 0.1 - 0.8 mM, and silicate 2.1 - 12.1 mM) were in versely corre lated with temperature. Diatoms (2792 - 1602437 cells m-3) constituted > 90% of the phytoplankton as semblages and dinoflagellates (226 - 10029 cells m-3) represented only ~10% of the algaebiomass. Copepod abun dance (8 - 1031 ind. m-3) varied positively with that of diatom and tempeature. Therelative abundance of Temora spp. (1 - 712 ind. m-3) varied from < 2% in win ter to > 69% in summer; that of Paracalanus spp. (0.1 - 176 ind. m-3) were > 25% in spring and au tumn and Calanus spp. (0.5 - 24 ind. m-3) dom i nated in win ter and spring, but ac counted for only ~10% of the to tal copepods. Both di a tom den sity and copepod abun dance were positively correlated with temperature, indicating these two plank tongroups were left bot tom-up control. The copepod abun dance positively co-aried with diatoms in 2005, but not in 2006. Fur ther sea son-to-sea son analysis showed that the diatomvs. copepodratios changed positively only when the medusa abun dance changed greatly (> 40-fold) between consecutive sea sons. During periods when the medusa abundance varied less than 10-fold between seasons, there is no relationship between the ratios and the medusa abun dance. This study suggests that the stability of the medusa abundance from season to season could be important in regulating the ecological linkage between diatoms and their predators ¡V copepods.

Methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) is a group of planktonic microorganisms that use methane as their primary source of cellular energy. For tropical lakes in monsoon Asia, there is currently a knowledge gap on MOB community diversity and the factors influencing their abundance. Herewith, we present a preliminary assessment of the MOB communities in three maar lakes in tropical monsoon Asia using Catalyzed Reporter Deposition, Fluorescence In-Situ Hybridization (CARD-FISH), 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, and pmoA gene sequencing. Correlation analysis between MOB abundances and lakes' physicochemical parameters following seasonal monsoon events were performed to explain observed spatial and temporal patterns in MOB diversity. The CARD-FISH analyses detected the three MOB types (I, II, and NC10) which aligned with the results from 16S rRNA amplicons and pmoA gene sequencing. Among community members based on 16S rRNA genes, Proteobacterial Type I MOB (e.g., Methylococcaceae and Methylomonadaceae), Proteobacterial Type II (Methylocystaceae), Verrucomicrobial (Methylacidiphilaceae), Methylomirabilota/NC10 (Methylomirabilaceae), and archaeal ANME-1a were found to be the dominant methane-oxidizers in three maar lakes. Analysis of microbial diversity and distribution revealed that the community compositions in Lake Yambo vary with the seasons and are more distinct during the stratified period. Temperature, DO, and pH were significantly and inversely linked with type I MOB and Methylomirabilota during stratification. Only MOB type I was influenced by monsoon changes. This research sought to establish a baseline for the diversity and ecology of planktonic MOB in tropical monsoon Asia to better comprehend their contribution to the CH4 cycle in tropical freshwater ecosystems.
