Abstract

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) on platinum (Pt) electrocatalysts involves the generation of hydrogen atoms and the formation of hydrogen molecules. It is commonly believed that the sites on the surfaces of the terrace (111, 110, and 100) domains are responsible for the formation of hydrogen molecules. However, the electrochemistry of the hydrogen atom generation is not well understood. We created edge-rich platinum electrocatalysts using nano-fabrics comprising entire single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) as templates and supports. We then conducted the HER on the edge-rich Pt/SWCNT hybridized electrocatalysts and gained new insights into the electrochemical properties and functions of the edge sites. We propose that the edge sites are oxidized and serve two important functions: they act as atomic barriers, allowing electrons to accumulate within the terrace (111, 110, and 100) domains, and they transfer the electrons to the hydronium ions in the electrical double layer through discharge. Enhancing the discharge capability of the electrocatalysts is an efficient way to reduce the amount of platinum required, and this can be applied to various precious metal-based electrocatalysts to enhance their electrocatalytic activities and durability. 9. Effect of encapsulated graphene oxide on alginate-based bead adsorption to remove acridine orange from aqueous solutions

Abstract

Environmentally-benign high-performance graphene oxide (GO)/alginate-based absorbents were prepared to eliminate acridine orange selected as a typical dye. Characterizations demonstrated GO well encapsulated and its promotion of pore formation on structure. Kinetic studies exhibited that the addition of GO shortened the adsorption equilibrium time, raised the initial rate and the adsorption capacity. Isotherm studies indicated the adsorptive behavior followed Langmuir type, and higher maximum capacity was obtained in the presence of GO. The adsorption positively responded to pH increased from acidic to weakly alkaline. At low pH, GO would contribute dominantly to the adsorption, whereas alginate component was inhibited.

11. Massive production of graphene oxide from expanded graphite

Abstract

In a deviation from the conventional Hummers method, a spontaneous expansion approach was introduced with expanded graphite as the precursors. The intercalating agent (H2SO4) was able to penetrate into the expanded graphite; this had further expanded the graphite and as a result, a foam-like intermediate was produced. The foam-like graphite was more easily oxidized in reaction with the oxidant (KMnO4) to form graphene oxide (GO). Fully exfoliated GO was obtained with expanded graphite having the median diameter ~ 15 {\mu}m as the precursors. This procedure was much safer and productive in scalable applications than the conventional Hummers methods.

32. Uranium In Situ Electrolytic Deposition with a Reusable Functional Graphene‐Foam Electrode

Abstract

Nuclear fission produces 400 GWe which represents 11% of the global electricity output. Uranium is the essential element as both fission fuel and radioactive waste. Therefore, the recovery of uranium is of great importance. Here, an in situ electrolytic deposition method to extract uranium from aqueous solution is reported. A functionalized reduced graphene oxide foam (3D-FrGOF) is used as the working electrode, which acts as both a hydrogen evolution reaction catalyst and a uranium deposition substrate. The specific electrolytic deposition capacity for U(VI) ions with the 3D-FrGOF is 4560 mg g−1 without reaching saturation, and the Coulombic efficiency can reach 54%. Moreover, reduction of the uranium concentration in spiked seawater from 3 ppm to 19.9 ppb is achieved, which is lower than the US Environmental Protection Agency uranium limits for drinking water (30 ppb). Furthermore, the collection electrode can be efficiently regenerated and recycled at least nine times without much efficiency fading, by ejecting into 2000 ppm concentrated uranium solution in a second bath with reverse voltage bias. All these findings open new opportunities in using free-standing 3D-FrGOF electrode as an advanced separation technique for water treatment.

Abstract

We generated a three-dimensional collagen scaffold coated with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) nanoparticles and histologically evaluated tissue behavior toward the nanomodified scaffold after subcutaneous tissue implantation in rat. Scanning electron microscopy images of the nanomodified scaffold showed that the collagen surface was enveloped by a meshwork of CNTs and dispersed β-TCP nanoparticles. Histological observations indicated that application of CNTs and β-TCP nanoparticles increased cell and blood vessel penetration into the collagen scaffold. CNTs consistently stimulated giant cell aggregation. In addition, CNTs and β-TCP application to the scaffold significantly promoted the DNA content of infiltrating cells and scaffold biodegradation compared to the untreated scaffold. The nanomodified scaffold coated with CNTs and β-TCP nanoparticles would be beneficial for tissue engineering therapy.
