3. Controlling the narrative: Euphemistic language affects judgments of actions while avoiding perceptions of dishonesty

Abstract

The present work examined the extent to which evaluations of actions could be biased by the strategic use of euphemistic (agreeable) and dysphemistic (disagreeable) terms. Across multiple studies, we demonstrate that evaluations of actions are made more favorable by replacing a disagreeable term (e.g., torture) with a semantically related agreeable term (e.g., enhanced interrogation) in an act’s description. Notably, the influence of these terms was reduced (but not eliminated) when actions were described in a less ambiguous (i.e., more detailed) manner. Despite their influence, participants judged both agreeable and disagreeable action descriptions as largely truthful and distinct from lies, and judged agents using such descriptions as more trustworthy and moral than liars. Overall, the present findings suggest that a strategic speaker can, through the careful use of language, sway the opinions of others while avoiding many of the reputational costs associated with less subtle forms of linguistic manipulation (e.g., lying).

6. Individual differences in metacognitive ability of grandiose and vulnerablenarcissists

Abstract

Understanding individual differences in metacognitive ability may provide novel insights into how we think about ourown thinking. Past research has revealed individual differences in the extent to which grandiose and vulnerable narcissistsare metacognitively miscalibrated with respect to cognitive ability (Littrell, Fugelsang, & Risko, 2019). Building off ofthis work, we present a study examining the relations between trait narcissism across different cognitive tasks (e.g., verbalability, memory) and measures of metacognitive ability (e.g., bias, relative accuracy). Results indicate that while grandioseand vulnerable narcissists did not differ with respect to performance on cognitive tasks, they did significantly differ in theirperformance on certain metacognitive metrics. These results contribute to both our understanding of narcissism, individualdifferences in metacognitive ability, and the relation between different measures of metacognitive ability.

13. No Evidence for Decreased Foreign Language Effect in Highly Proficient and Acculturated Bilinguals: A Commentary on Cavar and Tytus (2018)

Abstract

Bilinguals who consider moral problems in their foreign language tend to endorse causing harm to others if that leads to good outcomes more than they do in their native language. Cavar and Tytus [2018. "Moral Judgement and Foreign Language Effect: When the Foreign Language Becomes the Second Language. Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development" 39 (1): 17-28] reported that this effect disappears when the decision maker is highly acculturated. We challenge the latter conclusion. Specifically, the experiment reported by Cavar and Tytus (2018) utilised unvalidated and potentially unreliable materials, was underpowered, and lacked a control group. Moreover, a re-analysis of their statistical test shows that it fails to convincingly support the reported null finding. We conclude that further examination of the moral foreign language effect is needed to test its boundaries.

Abstract

We examine the joint effects of gender and experience on statistical reasoning. Participants with various levels of experience in statistics completed the Statistical Reasoning Assessment (Garfield, 2003), along with individual difference measures assessing cognitive ability and thinking dispositions. Although the performance of both genders improved with experience, the gender gap persisted, with males outperforming females across all experience levels. A confirmatory structural equation model assessing the degree to which cognitive ability, thinking dispositions, and gender account for statistical reasoning performance supported the idea that differences in statistical reasoning are not uniquely a matter of cognitive ability. Rather, gender was found to influence statistical reasoning directly, as well as indirectly through its influence on thinking dispositions.

Abstract

The growing prevalence of misleading information (i.e., bullshit) in society carries with it an increased need to understand the processes underlying many people's susceptibility to falling for it. Here we report two studies (N = 412) examining the associations between one's ability to detect pseudo-profound bullshit, confidence in one's bullshit detection abilities, and the metacognitive experience of evaluating potentially misleading information. We find that people with the lowest (highest) bullshit detection performance overestimate (underestimate) their detection abilities and overplace (underplace) those abilities when compared to others. Additionally, people reported using both intuitive and reflective thinking processes when evaluating misleading information. Taken together, these results show that both highly bullshit-receptive and highly bullshit-resistant people are largely unaware of the extent to which they can detect bullshit and that traditional miserly processing explanations of receptivity to misleading information may be insufficient to fully account for these effects. Abstract

Across three studies (N = 659), we present evidence that engaging in explanatory reflection reduces receptivity to pseudo‐profound bullshit but not scientific bullshit or fake news. Additionally, ratings for pseudo‐profound and scientific bullshit attributed to authoritative sources were significantly inflated compared to bullshit from anonymous sources. These findings provide initial evidence that asking people to reflect on why they find certain statements meaningful (or not) helps reduce receptivity to some types of misinformation but not others. Moreover, the appeal of misleading claims spread by perceived experts may be largely immune to the putative benefits of interventions that rely solely on reflective thinking. Taken together, our results suggest that while encouraging the public to be more reflective can certainly be helpful as a general rule, the effectiveness of this strategy in reducing the persuasiveness of misleading or otherwise epistemically‐suspect claims is limited by the type of claims being evaluated. Abstract

The Keats heuristic suggests that people find aesthetically pleasing expressions more accurate than mundane expressions. We test this notion with chiastic statements. Chiasmus is a stylistic phenomenon in which at least two linguistic constituents are repeated in reverse order, conventionally represented by the formula A-B-B-A. Our study focuses on the specific form of chiasmus known as antimetabole, in which the reverse-repeated constituents are words (e.g., “All for one and one for all;” A = all, B = one). In 3 out of 4 experiments (N = 797), we find evidence that people judge antimetabolic statements (e.g., “Success is getting what you want. Happiness is wanting what you get.”) as more accurate than semantically equivalent non-antimetabolic statements (e.g., “Success is getting what you wish. Happiness is wanting what you receive.”). Furthermore, we evaluate fluency as a potential mechanism explaining the observed accuracy benefit afforded to antimetabolic statements, finding that the increased speed (i.e., fluency) with which antimetabolic statements were processed predicted judgements of accuracy. Overall, the current work is consistent with the growing literature on stylistic factors biasing assessments of truth, using the distinctive stylistic pattern of antimetabole.

Abstract

We will explore how a person’s proneness to experience shame and their in-the-moment experience of shame influences their tendency to exhibit the sunk cost bias. The sunk cost bias occurs when people continue a failing endeavour simply because they have previously invested time, money, or effort. As these costs cannot be recovered (they are "sunk costs"), they should not affect future decisions. Yet, people are often motivated by sunk costs to continue in these circumstances, even when continuing would offer no apparent benefit. In these types of situations, we suggest that one reason why people tend to justify future actions with past unrecoverable costs is that they feel stopping will be acknowledging a failure and would likely lead the person to experience shame. To avoid this experience of shame, we think that individuals will try to withdraw from the possible situation that would cause them to experience it. This might lead to continuing with a failing endeavour despite it leading to no ostensible benefit (other than perhaps the benefit of avoiding shame in the present moment). In our work, we will examine the decision-making of individuals in sunk cost scenarios and assess the extent to which they feel shame during these scenarios. We will also have them complete measures to assess how prone they are to experience shame in everyday life and their in-the-moment experience of shame. Ultimately, we hope to better understand a widespread bias in human decision-making — the sunk cost bias.
