Abstract

The production of the f in two photon collisions, with the subsequent decay f→ππ has been observed in the CELLO detector at PETRA. The f peak was found to lie on a dipion continuum and to be shifted downwards in mass by ≃50 MeV/c. The ππ mass spectrum from 0.8 to 1.5 GeV/c was well fitted by the model of Mennessier using only a unitarised Born amplitude and helicity 2 f amplitude. The previously observed mass shift and distortion of the f peak are explained by strong interference between the Born and f amplitudes. The only free parameter in the fit of the data to the model is the radiative width Γ( f). It was found that: Γ( f)=2.5±0.1±0.5 keV where the first (second) quoted errors are statistical (systematic). Abstract

We have measured the scale invariant inclusive photon and π cross sections at W=14, 22 and 34 GeV. A comparison with π data shows no significant difference between neutral and charged pion production. Comparing the integrated cross sections in the x range 0.15< x<1.0 we observe a considerable decrease from 14 GeV to 34 GeV with a statistical significance of 1.5 standard deviations. Abstract

The photonic part of multihadronic e e annihilation events has been analyzed at a c.m. energy of 34 GeV. The photonic energy fraction per event is determined to be f=0.251±0.003 (stat.) ±0.04 (syste.). The neutral and charged components of the events are analyzed separately revealing close similarity in thrust axis directions and momentum distributions in agreement with the hypothesis that most photons result from π decay. π's are reconstructed separately and used to determine the inclusive cross section. Comparing these cross sections with lower energy data from SPEAR we find some indication for scaling violation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We have measured the total normalized cross section R for the process e+e− → hadrons at centre-of-mass energies between 14.0 and 46.8 GeV based on an integrated luminosity of 60.3 pb−1. The data are well described by the standard SU(3)c⊗SU(2)L⊗U(1) model with the production of the five known quarks. No open production of a sixth quark with charge 2/3 or 1/3 occurs below a centre-of-mass energy of 46.6 or 46.3 GeV, respectively. A fitting procedure which takes the correlations between measurements into account was used to determine the electroweak mixing angle sin2θw and the strong coupling constant αs(S) in second-order QCD. We applied this procedure to the CELLO data and in addition included the data from other experiments at PETRA and PEP. Both fits give consistent results. The fit to the combined data yields αs(342 GeV2) = 0.165±0.030, and sin2θw = 0.236±0.020. Fixing sin2θw at the world average value of 0.23 yields αs(342GeV2) = 0.169±0.025.

Abstract

The production of thef0 in two photon collisions, with the subsequent decayf0?p+p- has been observed in the CELLO detector at PETRA. Thef0 peak was found to lie on a dipion continuum and to be shifted downwards in mass by ?50 MeV/c2. The pp mass spectrum from 0.8 to 1.5 GeV/c2 was well fitted by the model of Mennessier using only a unitarised Born amplitude and helicity 2f0 amplitude. The previously observed mass shift and distortion of thef0 peak are explained by strong interference between the Born andf0 amplitudes. The only free parameter in the fit of the data to the model is the radiative widthG??(f0). It was found that:G??(f0)=2.5±0.1±0.5 keV where the first (second) quoted errors are statistical (systematic).

Abstract

We have determined the cross section for γγ→π+π+π−π− in a way free of assumptions about the relative contributions fromρ0ρ0,ρ02π and 4π (uncorrelated phase space). We find a sharp onset above threshold and a rather high cross section of about 200 nb aroundWγγ=1.5 GeV which consists to about 40% ofρ0ρ0 production with sizeable contributions fromρ02π and 4π (PS). The total cross section as well as theρ0ρ0 content fall rather fast at higher c.m. energies. Attempts to explain this behaviour in terms of production of known resonances are not successful so far. The angular distributions do not show any significant structure pointing to resonance formation in the 4π-system. Only theρ0-meson is observed in the moment analysis. The decay distributions of theρ0 for forward produced rhos are fairly consistent with helicity conservation of the produced rhos in accordance with the VDM picture.

Abstract

The photonic part of multihadronice+e- annihilation events has been analyzed at a c.m. energy of 34 GeV. The photonic energy fraction per event is determined to bef?=0.251±0.003 (stat.) ±0.04 (syste.). The neutral and charged components of the events are analyzed separately revealing close similarity in thrust axis directions and momentum distributions in agreement with the hypothesis that most photons result from p0 decay. p0's are reconstructed separately and used to determine the inclusive cross section. Comparing these cross sections with lower energy data from SPEAR we find some indication for scaling violation.

Abstract

(1977). doi:10.1016/0370-2693(77)90684-0, The semileptonic and leptonic decay modes of charmed hadrons produced in e + e − collisions above 4 GeV in the cm have been investigated by selecting events with a single electron plus at least two charged tracks. The electron momentum spectrum peaks near 0.5 GeV/ c with few events above 0.7 GeV/ c . The spectrum excludes large rates for the decays D → e v e and D → e v e π , but is compatible with D → e v e K ∗ (892) , D → e v e K or a mixture of both. The semileptonic branching ratio is obtained both by comparing the inclusive electron cross section with the total cross section attributable to charm, and by studying the fraction of events containing a second electron. The semileptonic charm branching ratios obtained are 0.11 ± 0.03 and 0.16 ± 0.06 respectively. A single event with three electrons and hadrons is found, consistent with the estimated background. The 90% confidence upper limit for σ (e + e − → 3e + hadrons) is 0.1 nb.

Abstract

(1978). doi:10.1016/0370-2693(78)90183-1, The cross sections for e + e − → e + ( μ + + non showering track + any photons have been measured for cm energies between 3.1 GeV and 5.2 GeV. We observe τ -pair production below the thresholdfor charm production and determine the τ mass to be 1.807 ± 0.020 GeV from a fit to the energy dependence of the cross section. The ration of the leptonic branching ratios B μ / B e = 0.92 ± 0.32 is consistent with eμ-universality. The following branching ratios are determined for a V-A coupling: B(τ → ν τ e ν ) = B(τ → ν τ μ ν ) = 0.182 + 0.028 . B ( τ → ν τ + charged hadron + any photons) = 0.29 ± 0.11, B ( τ → ν τ + three or more charged hadrons + any photons) = 0.35 ± 0.11.

Abstract

5 pp. (1987)., A search for light leptoquarks decaying into a lepton and a quark has been performed using the CELLO detector at the storage ring PETRA. Decay modes have been looked for where the lepton is either a muon or a neutrino, the latter being detected by a high missing transverse momentum. Except for one event previously reported no further two-jet events with two isolated muons were observed. No evidence for pair production of these particles has been found in other final states configurations. Our results are interpreted within a model where leptoquarks appear as a coloured Goldsone multiplet of charges 2/3.A 95% CL upper limit of 0.30 pb is set on the pair production cross section of such leptoquarks, thus excluding masses between 7 and 20.5 GeV.

Abstract

(1977). doi:10.1016/0370-2693(77)90360-4, The multiplicity distribution of inclusive electron events above 4 GeV cm energy shows two distinct classes of events: two prong no photon and high multiplicity events. If the high multiplicity events are attributed to the semi-leptonic decay of charmed particles the two prong no photon events must come from the weak decay of a different type of particle. The charged K to π ratio was measured for these events. The average number of charged kaons is 0.07 ± 0.06 per two prong event and 0.90 ± 0.18 per multiprong event. Thus the weak current responsible for the low multiplicity events has a small coupling to strange particles.

Abstract

(1977). doi:10.1016/0370-2693(77)90361-6, Inclusive η production by e + e − annihilation for cm energies between 4 and 5.2 GeV was studied. A strong η signal was observed at 4.4 GeV, produced predominantly in conjunction with a low energy photon suggestive of F F ∗ or F ∗ F ∗ production. From events containing a π ± , and η, and a low energy photon the F and F ∗ masses were found to be 2.03 ± 0.06 and 2.14 ± 0.06 GeV, respectively.

e+e- +- +- ... + e e und e e + yy wurden bel Energlen zwischen 33.0 und 36.7 GeV gemessen. Die Ergebnisse stimmen mit den Vorhersagen der Quantenelektrodynamik überein. Ein Vergleich mit dem Standardmodell der elektroschwachen Wechselwirkung liefert sin 20w= 0.25 ± 0.13.
