Patients may have ethical, religious or medical concerns about the origin of bone grafts, which could lead them to reject the use of certain types of bone graft in their treatments. The aim of this multicenter study, which surveyed patients from five university clinics in Portugal, France, Italy, Spain and Chile, was to analyze patients’ opinions regarding the source of bone grafts. Patients and methods: A survey composed of ten questions was translated into local languages and validated. Patients were asked about the degree of acceptance/rejection of each graft and the reasons for rejection. A chi-squared test was used to analyze statistically significant differences. Results: Three hundred thirty patients were surveyed. The grafts that elicited the highest percentage of refusal were allograft (40.4%), autologous bone graft from an extraoral donor site (34%) and xenograft (32.7%). The grafts with the lowest rate of refusal were alloplastic (6.3%) and autologous bone grafts from an intraoral donor site (24.5%). The main reason for autologous bone rejection was the fear of pain and discomfort, for xenograft it was the fear of disease transmission and the rejection of use of animals for human benefit, and for allograft it was ethical/moral motivations and the fear of disease transmission. Religious affiliation influenced patient’s preferences. Conclusion: The origin of bone grafts is still conflictive for a high percentage of patients. Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To test discriminant analysis as a method of turning the information of a routine customer satisfaction survey (CSS) into a more accurate decision-making tool. METHODS: A 7-question, 10-multiple choice, self-applied questionnaire was used to study a sample of patients seen in two outpatient care units in Valparaíso, Chile, one of primary care (n=100) and the other of secondary care (n=249). Two cutting points were considered in the dependent variable (final satisfaction score): satisfied versus unsatisfied, and very satisfied versus all others. Results were compared with empirical measures (proportion of satisfied individuals, proportion of unsatisfied individuals and size of the median). RESULTS: The response rate was very high, over 97.0% in both units. A new variable, medical attention, was revealed, as explaining satisfaction at the primary care unit. The proportion of the total variability explained by the model was very high (over 99.4%) in both units, when comparing satisfied with unsatisfied customers. In the analysis of very satisfied versus all other customers, significant relationship was identified only in the case of the primary care unit, which explained a small proportion of the variability (41.9%). CONCLUSIONS: Discriminant analysis identified relationships not revealed by the previous analysis. It provided information about the proportion of the variability explained by the model. It identified non-significant relationships suggested by empirical analysis (e.g. the case of the relation very satisfied versus others in the secondary care unit). It measured the contribution of each independent variable to the explanation of the variation of the dependent one.

Abstract

In observational radio astronomy, sideband-separating receivers are preferred, particularly under high atmospheric noise, which is usually the case in the sub-millimeter range. However, obtaining a good rejection ratio between the two sidebands is difficult since, unavoidably, imbalances in the different analog components appear. We describe a method to correct these imbalances without making any change in the analog part of the sideband-separating receiver, specifically, keeping the intermediate-frequency hybrid in place. This opens the possibility of implementing the method in any existing receiver. We have built hardware to demonstrate the validity of the method and tested it on a fully analog receiver operating between 600 and 720GHz. We have tested the stability of calibration and performance vs time and after full resets of the receiver. We have performed an error analysis to compare the digital compensation in two configurations of analog receivers, with and without intermediate frequency (IF) hybrid. An average compensated sideband rejection ratio of 46dB is obtained. Degradation of the compensated sideband rejection ratio on time and after several resets of the receiver is minimal. A receiver with an IF hybrid is more robust to systematic errors. Moreover, we have shown that the intrinsic random errors in calibration have the same impact for configuration without IF hybrid and for a configuration with IF hybrid with analog rejection ratio better than 10dB. Compensated rejection ratios above 40dB are obtained even in the presence of high analog rejection. The method is robust allowing its use under normal operational conditions at any telescope. We also demonstrate that a full analog receiver is more robust against systematic errors. Finally, the error bars associated to the compensated rejection ratio are almost independent of whether IF hybrid is present or not.

Abstract

Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) is a growing concern in the radio astronomy community. Single-dish telescopes are particularly susceptible to RFI. Several methods have been developed to cope with RF-polluted environments, based on flagging, excision, and real-time blanking, among others. All these methods produce some degree of data loss or require assumptions to be made on the astronomical signal. We report the development of a real-time, digital adaptive filter implemented on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) capable of processing 4096 spectral channels in a 1 GHz of instantaneous bandwidth. The filter is able to cancel a broad range of interference signals and quickly adapt to changes on the RFI source, minimizing the data loss without any assumption on the astronomical or interfering signal properties. The speed of convergence (for a decrease to a 1%) was measured to be 208.1 us for a broadband noise-like RFI signal and 125.5 us for a multiple-carrier RFI signal recorded at the FAST radio telescope., Comment: 7 pages

Abstract

The use of photothermal techniques for measuring the thermal parameters of ferromagnetic nanofluids has been the subject of investigation in several recent studies. In this work, the thermal properties of Fe3O4 nanofluids were investigated using two photothermal techniques: Thermal wave resonance cavity (TWRC) and thermal lens spectrometry (TLS). Fe3O4 nanoparticles were prepared using the precipitation method and characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A nonlinear increase in thermal diffusivity with nanoparticle concentration was observed, with values ranging from 1.52 × 10–3 cm2/s to 5.46 × 10–3 cm2/s. Comparison between the two techniques revealed differences in accuracy and applicability for different nanoparticle concentrations. These results highlight the importance of selecting the appropriate technique based on the specific characteristics of the nanofluid under study. In conclusion, this study provides a deeper understanding of the thermal properties of Fe3O4 nanofluids and underscores the potential of photothermal techniques in characterizing these materials for various applications, including magnetic hyperthermia for cancer treatment. Abstract

Individuals with minor ischaemic stroke and intracranial occlusion are at increased risk of poor outcomes. Intravenous thrombolysis with tenecteplase might improve outcomes in this population. We aimed to test the superiority of intravenous tenecteplase over non-thrombolytic standard of care in patients with minor ischaemic stroke and intracranial occlusion or focal perfusion abnormality.

Abstract

Small- and large-scale 1g experiments were conducted to investigate the bearing capacity failure of geosynthetic-reinforced soil walls. The small-scale experiments (1/10) provided fundamental insights into the development of failure based on digital image correlation analysis. Since these tests suffered from scale effects, large-scale tests (1/1.67) were performed to quantify the ultimate load-bearing capacity of a 1.2 m high wall. A vertical load was applied on top of the structures and internal soil movements and stresses, wall deformations and reinforcement strains were measured. The experimental results revealed that the failure was initially triggered at the rear end of the bottom reinforcement. The wall rotated to the backfill and the ground surface in front of the wall was uplifted. The results confirmed the quasi-monolithic behaviour of the reinforced zone. A multi-body failure mechanism was observed below the base of the wall, consisting of an active and a passive wedge connected by a transition zone. Important scaling factors were discussed using the two different scales which has shown important conclusions that are relevant for experimental studies. The analytical calculations revealed that a reduced reinforcement length needs to be considered in the analytical approach to predict a rather conservative load-bearing capacity.
