8. Disorder in Ho 2 Ti 2−x Zr x O 7 : pyrochlore to defect fluorite solid solution series

Pyrochlore (A2B2O7) is an important, isometric structure-type because of its large variety of compositions and structural derivatives that are generally related to different disordering mechanisms at various spatial scales. The disordering is key to understanding variations in properties, such as magnetic behavior or ionic conduction. Neutron and X-ray total scattering methods were used to investigate the degree of structural disorder in the Ho2Ti2-x Zr x O7 (x = 0.0-2.0, Δx = 0.25) solid solution series as a function of the Zr-content, x. Ordered pyrochlores (Fd3̄m) disorder to defect fluorite (Fm3̄m) via cation and anion disordering. Total scattering experiments with sensitivity to the cation and anion sublattices provide unique insight into the underlying atomic processes. Using simultaneous Rietveld refinement (long-range structure) and small-box refinement PDF analysis (short-range structure), we show that the series undergoes a rapid transformation from pyrochlore to defect fluorite at x ≈ 1.2, while the short-range structure exhibits a linear increase in a local weberite-type phase, C2221, over the entire composition range. Enthalpies of formation from the oxides determined using high temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry support the structural data and provide insight into the effect of local ordering on the energetics of disorder. The measured enthalpies of mixing are negative and are fit by a regular solution parameter of W = -31.8 ± 3.7 kJ mol-1. However, the extensive short-range ordering determined from the structural analysis strongly suggests that the entropies of mixing must be far less positive than implied by the random mixing of a regular solution. We propose a local disordering scheme involving the pyrochlore 48f to 8a site oxygen Frenkel defect that creates 7-coordinated Zr sites contained within local weberite-type coherent nanodomains. Thus, the solid solution is best described as a mixture of two phases, with the weberite-type nanodomains triggering the long-range structural transformation to defect fluorite after accumulation above a critical concentration (50% Ti replaced by Zr).

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Understanding and implementing strategies to adapt to climate change is essential for maintaining the livelihoods and well-being of the human population. In Colombia, interest in climate change is increasing, reflected in growing attention towards adaptation and mitigation strategies. There is a lack of detailed research on this subject, especially in ecologically significant areas like the La Mojana region. The objective of this study was to evaluate the perception of different focus population groups such as fishermen, farmers and ranchers on climate change, regional adaptation strategies and implementation of public policies in the La Mojana Region of Northern Colombia, which is highly vulnerable to extreme climate phenomena. A bibliometric analysis was conducted to assess the dynamics of scientific production at both national and global levels, focusing on the perception and adaptation policies related to climate change. METHODS: Data collection for this study involved conducting semi-structured questionnaire interviews with 420 participants from the fishing, agriculture, and livestock sectors. The aim was to gain insights into their perspectives on climate change risks and the mitigation measures they have implemented. A bibliometric analysis using the SCOPUS scientific database was conducted to explore global and Latin American publication trends related to climate change perception and adaptation policies, with a particular focus on Colombia. This analysis emphasizes the latest trends in research and the scholarly influence in the areas of climate change, public policies, and strategies for adaptation. FINDINGS: The findings indicated that all participants observed changes in climate patterns over the past two decades, specifically in terms of irregular rainfall patterns and disruptions in traditional sowing and harvesting cycles that were once considered predictable. Focus groups' perception aligned with historical meteorological data on flood and La Niña phenomena. Priorities for government intervention include response to early emergencies, community participation, and stakeholder collaboration in future planning. Various strategies for adaptation were implemented, such as the management of communities, conservation of ecosystems, construction of resilient housing and livestock management, sustainable water management, and diversification of crops. Colombia ranks third in Latin America for scientific production on climate change perception and adaptation policies, with political context and international compliance key factors. CONCLUSION: The study highlights how climate change affects psychological well-being through social and economic insecurity, exacerbated by the local government's lack of intervention to mitigate the vulnerability of focal groups and strengthen their adaptation and resilience capacities against climate change Colombia's significant contribution to regional scientific production on climate change perception highlights the pressing requirement for further research to explore these issues and improve adaptation strategies in the area. In situ high-pressure X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy were used to determine the influence of composition on the high-pressure behavior of A2B2O7 pyrochlore (A = Eu, Dy; B = Ti, Zr) up to ∼50 GPa. Based on X-ray diffraction results, all compositions transformed to the high-pressure cotunnite structure. The B-site cation species had a larger effect on the transition pressure than the A-site cation species, with the onset of the phase transformation occurring at ∼41 GPa for B = Ti and ∼16 GPa B = Zr. However, the A-site cation affected the kinetics of the phase transformation, with the transformation for compositions with the smaller ionic radii, i.e., A = Dy, proceeding faster than those with a larger ionic radii, i.e., A = Eu. These results were consistent with previous work in which the radius-ratio of the A- and B-site cations determined the energetics of disordering, and compositions with more similarly sized A- and B-site cations had a lower defect formation energy. Raman spectra revealed differences in the degree of short-range order of the different compositions. Due to the large phase fraction of cotunnite at high pressure for B = Zr compositions, Raman modes for cotunnite could be observed, with more modes recorded for A = Eu than A = Dy. These additional modes are attributed to increased short-to-medium range ordering in the initially pyrochlore structured Eu2Zr2O7 as compared with the initially defect-fluorite structured Dy2Zr2O7.

The design of high-speed serial links continues to attract the attention of the electronics industry due to the steady development of different telecommunications standards, generating a constantly growing data rate and new modulation schemes. However, conventional certification metrics can lead to sub-optimal transmit (Tx) and receive (Rx) circuit designs. Therefore, the Ethernetstandard IEEE 802.3bj introduced a more effective evaluation method called channel operating margin(COM) to explore the design space at an early stage. Although the advantages of COM have been discussed in the literature and only a few works exploreits potential as a backplane design tool, there are no reports on the use of COM as a complementary design tool for transceiver circuits. This work studies the use of COM as a complementary tool for transceiver design. COM performance is evaluated for four 100GBASE-KP4 backplanes and different equalization architectures. The impact of the metric and the challenges associated within corporating new equalization structures into the COM flow are discussed. The results reveal a conventional Tx-Rx architecture that exceeds the COM threshold and an alternative one that improves the opening of the eye diagram but does not exceed thethreshold., El diseño de enlaces seriales de alta velocidad continúa atrayendo la atención de la industria electrónica debido al desarrollo constante de diferentes estándares de telecomunicaciones, generando una tasa de datos en constante crecimiento y nuevos esquemas de modulación. Sin embargo, las métricas de certificación convencionales pueden llevar a diseños de circuitos de transmisión (Tx) y recepción (Rx) subóptimos. Por lo tanto, el estándar Ethernet IEEE 802.3bj introdujo un método de evaluación m as efectivo llamado margen de operación del canal (COM, por sus siglas en ingles) para explorar el espacio de diseño en una etapa temprana. Aunque las ventajas de COM han sido discutidas en la literatura y solo unos pocos trabajos exploran su potencial como una herramienta de diseño de backplane, no hay informes sobre el uso de COM como una herramienta de diseño complementaria para circuitos transceptores. Este trabajo estudia el uso de COM como una herramienta complementaria para el diseño de transceptores. El rendimiento de COM se evalúa para cuatrobackplanes100GBASE-KP4 y diferentes arquitecturas de ecualización. Se discuten el impacto de la métrica y los desafios asociados a la incorporación de nuevas estructuras de ecualización en el flujo de COM. Los resultados revelan una arquitectura Tx-Rx convencional que supera el umbral de COM y una alternativa que mejora la apertura del diagrama de ojo pero no supera el umbral de COM.

This contribution provides a thorough examination of the structural characteristics of pyrochlore-type lanthanide titanates and zirconates Ln2Ti2O7 and Ln2Zr2O7, across various length scales. This paper also examines their processing, interesting physical properties (electrical, magnetic, and thermal characteristics), and responses to high pressure and ion irradiation. Brief sections on the elemental oxides' crystal chemistry, pertinent phase diagrams, and energetics of defect formation are also provided. Pyrochlore-type Ln2Ti2O7 and Ln2Zr2O7 stand out as truly multifunctional materials. Moreover, they have emerged as fascinating materials due to magnetic geometrical frustration, arising from the ordering of magnetic Ln3+ and non-magnetic Ti4+ (or Zr4+) cations into separate, interpenetrating lattices of corner-sharing tetrahedra. This results in a diverse array of exotic magnetic ground states, such as spin-ice (e.g., Dy2Ti2O7 or Ho2Ti2O7) or quantum spin ice (e.g., Tb2Ti2O7), observed at both low and room temperatures. They also exhibit varied electrical and electrochemical characteristics. Some members such as Gd2Zr2O7, function as fast ion conductors with a conductivity (σ) of ≈10−2 S·cm−1 at 800 °C and activation energy (Ea) ranging from 0.85 to 1.52 eV, depending on the degree of structural disorder. Others, such as Gd2TiMoO7, are mixed ionic-electronic conductors with σ ≈ 25 S·cm−1 at 1000 °C, making them promising candidate materials for applications in energy conversion and storage devices and oxygen separation membranes. Their exceptionally low thermal conductivity (e.g., κ ∼ 1.1–1.7 W·m−1·K−1 between 700 and 1200 °C for Ln2Zr2O7), close to the glass-like lower limit of highly disordered solids, positions them as valuable materials for thermal barrier coatings. They can also effectively accommodate actinides (e.g., Pu, Np, Cm, Am) in solid solutions and sustain prolonged exposure to radiation due to alpha-decay events, while preserving the integrity of the periodic atomic structure. Proposed as major components in actinide-bearing ceramics, they contribute to the long-term immobilization and disposal of long-lived waste radionuclides from nuclear programs. Some of these properties are displayed simultaneously, opening avenues for new applications. Despite the wealth of data available in the literature, this review highlights the need for a better understanding of order/disorder processes in pyrochlore-type materials and the influence of the structural length scale on their physical and chemical properties. Recent experimental evidence has revealed that pyrochlore short-range structure is far more complex than originally thought. Moreover, pyrochlore local structure is now believed to include short-range, lower symmetry, ordered domains, such as the orthorhombic weberite-type of structure. Notably, short- and long-range structures appear decoupled across different length scales and temperature regimes, and these differences persist even in well-ordered samples. We believe that the pyrochlore structure offers a unique opportunity for examining the interplay between chemical composition, defect chemistry, and properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The climate variability hypothesis proposes that species subjected to wide variation in climatic conditions will evolve wider niches, resulting in larger distributions. We test this hypothesis in tropical plants across a broad elevational gradient; specifically, we use a species‐level approach to evaluate whether elevational range sizes are explained by the levels of thermal variability experienced by species. Location: Central Andes. Time Period: Present day. Taxon: Woody plants. Methods: Combining data from 479 forest plots, we determined the elevational distributions of nearly 2300 species along an elevational gradient (~209–3800 m). For each species, we calculated the maximum annual variation in temperature experienced across its elevational distribution. We used phylogenetic generalized least square models to evaluate the effect of thermal variability on range size. Our models included additional covariates that might affect range size: body size, local abundance, mean temperature and total precipitation. We also considered interactions between thermal variability and mean temperature or precipitation. To account for geometric constraints, we repeated our analyses with a standardized measure of range size, calculated by comparing observed range sizes with values obtained from a null model. Results: Our results supported the main prediction of the climate variability hypothesis. Thermal variability had a strong positive effect on the range size, with species exposed to higher thermal variability having broader elevational distributions. Body size and local abundance also had positive, yet weak effects, on elevational range size. Furthermore, there was a strong positive interaction between thermal variability and mean annual temperature. Main Conclusions: Thermal variability had an overriding importance in driving elevational range sizes of woody plants in the Central Andes. Moreover, the relationship between thermal variability and range size might be even stronger in warmer regions, underlining the potential vulnerability of tropical montane floras to the effects of global warming. BackgroundRelatively few U.S.-based studies in chronic kidney disease have focused on Asian/Pacific Islanders. Clinical reports suggest that Asian/Pacific Islanders are more likely to be affected by IgA nephropathy (IgAN), and that the severity of disease is increased in these populations.MethodsTo explore whether these observations are borne out in a multi-ethnic, tertiary care renal pathology practice, we examined clinical and pathologic data on 298 patients with primary glomerular lesions (IgAN, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, membranous nephropathy and minimal change disease) at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center from November 1994 through May 2001. Pathologic assessment of native kidney biopsies with IgAN was conducted using Haas' classification system.ResultsAmong individuals with IgAN (N = 149), 89 (60%) were male, 57 (38%) white, 53 (36%) Asian/Pacific Islander, 29 (19%) Hispanic, 4 (3%) African American and 6 (4%) were of other or unknown ethnicity. The mean age was 37 +/- 14 years and median serum creatinine 1.7 mg/dL. Sixty-six patients (44%) exhibited nephrotic range proteinuria at the time of kidney biopsy. The distributions of age, gender, mean serum creatinine, and presence or absence of nephrotic proteinuria and/or hypertension at the time of kidney biopsy were not significantly different among white, Hispanic, and Asian/Pacific Islander groups. Of the 124 native kidney biopsies with IgAN, 10 (8%) cases were classified into Haas subclass I, 12 (10%) subclass II, 23 (18%) subclass III, 30 (25%) subclass IV, and 49 (40%) subclass V. The distribution of Haas subclass did not differ significantly by race/ethnicity. In comparison, among the random sample of patients with non-IgAN glomerular lesions (N = 149), 77 (52%) patients were male, 51 (34%) white, 42 (28%) Asian/Pacific Islander, 25 (17%) Hispanic, and 30 (20%) were African American.ConclusionsWith the caveats of referral and biopsy biases, the race/ethnicity distribution of IgAN differs significantly from that of other major glomerulonephridities. However, among individuals undergoing native kidney biopsy, we see no evidence of a race/ethnicity association with severity of disease in IgAN by clinical and IgAN-specific histopathologic criteria. Further studies are needed to identify populations at higher risk for progressive disease in IgAN.

- Abstract
Liquid argon time projection chamber detector technology provides high spatial and calorimetric resolutions on the charged particles traversing liquid argon. As a result, the technology has been used in a number of recent neutrino experiments, and is the technology of choice for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). In order to perform high precision measurements of neutrinos in the detector, final state particles need to be effectively identified, and their energy accurately reconstructed. This article proposes an algorithm based on a convolutional neural network to perform the classification of energy deposits and reconstructed particles as track-like or arising from electromagnetic cascades. Results from testing the algorithm on experimental data from ProtoDUNE-SP, a prototype of the DUNE far detector, are presented. The network identifies track- and shower-like particles, as well as Michel electrons, with high efficiency. The performance of the algorithm is consistent between experimental data and simulation.

K.J.M. thanks CINVESTAV-IPN for financial support during her stay at Universidad Complutense., We report on dispersive conductivity measurements in the oxygen ion conductor Gd_(2)(Ti_(2−y)Zr_(y))O_(7). Increasing Zr content leads to higher concentration of oxygen vacancies and results in higher activation energies for long-range ion transport, whilst the microscopic energy barrier for single ion hopping remains constant.
