Abstract

BackgroundNumerous studies have been conducted over the past 15 years to assess safety culture within healthcare facilities; in general, these studies have shown the pivotal role that managers play in its development. However, little is known about what healthcare managers actually do to support this development, and how caregivers and managers represent managers’role. Thus the objectives of this study were to explore: i) caregivers and managers’ perceptions and representations of safety, ii) the role of managers in the development of safety culture as perceived by themselves and by caregivers, iii) managers’ activities related to the development of safety culture.MethodsAn exploratory, multicentre, qualitative study was conducted from May 2014 to March 2015 in seven healthcare facilities in France. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with managers (frontline, middle and top level) and caregivers (doctors, nurses and nurse assistants) and on-site observations of two managers were carried out in all facilities. A thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews was performed. Observed activities were categorised using Luthans’ typology of managerial activities.ResultsParticipants in semi-structured interviews (44 managers and 21 caregivers) expressed positive perceptions of the level of safety in their facility. Support from frontline management was particularly appreciated, while support from top managers was identified as an area for improvement. Six main categories of safety-related activities were both observed among managers and regularly expressed by participants. However, caregivers’ expectations of their managers and managerial perceptions of these expectations only partially overlapped.ConclusionsThe present study highlights current categories of managerial activities that foster safety culture, and points out an important gap between caregivers’ expectations of their managers, and managerial perceptions of these expectations. The findings underline the need to allow more time for managers and caregivers to talk about safety issues. The results could be used to develop training programs to help healthcare managers to understand their role in the development of safety culture.

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to learn about experiences of postpartum teens in the first contact with their baby in the delivery room. Methodology: This was a study of qualitative approach and descriptive type. It is a cutting of the multicenter research Humanized Attention to Adolescents Childbirth. Ten adolescent puerperae who had their deliveries at the participant hospital of the research were the sample of this study during period from November 2008 to November 2009. For analysis, data hematic analysis was used (10). Results: After analyzing data we obtained two themes: The contact between mother and baby in delivery room and The actions held in the delivery room to stimulate the mother-baby bound. It was found that for some adolescent mothers, first contact with the baby was in the delivery room and the action more prominent in the delivery room to stimulate the mother’s bound with her baby was breastfeeding, Objetivo: Este estudo teve como objetivo conhecer as experiências das puérperas adolescentes sobre o primeiro contato com seu bebê na sala de parto. Metodologia: De abordagem qualitativa e caráter descritivo, tratase de recorte da pesquisa multicêntrica Atenção Humanizada ao Parto de Adolescentes. Fizeram parte deste estudo dez puérperas adolescentes que tiveram seus partos no hospital participante da pesquisa no período de novembro de 2008 a novembro de 2009. Para análise dos dados, foi utilizada a análise temática (10).Resultados: Após análise dos dados obteve-se dois temas: O contato entre mãe-bebê na sala de partoe As ações realizadas na sala de parto para o estímulo ao vínculo mãe-bebê. Constatou-se que para algumas mães adolescentes o primeiro contato com o bebê ocorreu na sala de parto e a ação de mais destaque na sala de parto para estimular o vínculo da mãe com seu bebê foi a amamentação, Objetivo: Este estudio tuvo como objetivo aprender acerca de las experiencias de las adolescentes puérperas sobre el primer contacto con su bebé en la sala de partos. Metodología: Estudio de abordaje cualitativo y carácter descriptivo. Se trató de una investigación de corte multi-céntrico de la Atención Humanizada al Parto de Adolescentes. En este estudio tomaron parte diez puérperas adolescentes que tu-vieron sus partos en el hospital participante en la investigación durante el período de noviembre de 2008 a noviembre de 2009. Para el análisis de los datos, se utilizó el análisis te-mático (10). Resultados: Después del análisis de los datos, se obtuvieron dos temas: El contacto entre la madre y el bebé en la sala de partos y Acciones mantenidas en la sala de parto para estimular el vínculo madre-bebé. Se encontró que para algunas madres adolescentes el primer contacto con el bebé estaba en la sala de partos y que la acción más destacada para estimular el vínculo de la madre con su bebé fue la lactancia materna.
