According to the results of bone mineral density test, the subjects were divided into the normal bone mass group, the osteopenia group, and the OP group. Age, gender, educational background, body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), duration of T2DM, glycosylated hemoglobin, serum lipids, and complications of T2DM in the three groups were analyzed and compared.Results: The prevalence of OP in patients with T2DM was 35.77%. There were statistically significant differences in age, gender, BMI, WHR, duration of T2DM, educational background, the level of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy (DR), and diabetic peripheral neuropathy among the three groups (P < 0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that increasing age, prolonged duration of T2DM, low BMI, high levels of HDL-C, and complicated DR were risk factors for osteopenia and OP.Conclusion: The prevalence of OP in T2DM was high. Risk factors for abnormal bone mass in T2DM might be females, advanced age, long duration of T2DM, low BMI, high levels of HDL-C, and diabetic microangiopathy.Keywords: type 2 diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, risk-factors, prevalence

The branching fraction of the ψ(2S) decay into τ+τ - has been measured for the first time using the BES detector at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider. The result is Bττ=(2.710. 43±0.55)× 10-3, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. This value, along with those for the branching fractions into e+e- and μ+ μ- of this resonance, satisfy well the relation predicted by the sequential lepton hypothesis. Combining all these values with the leptonic width of the resonance, the total width of the ψ(25) is determined to be (252±37) keV. ©2002 The American Physical Society.

Objective: This study aims to explore the influence of combining autologous platelet-rich gel (APG) with continuous vacuum-sealed drainage (CVSD) and the exogenous recombinant human acidic fibroblast growth factor (rh-aFGF) on the healing processes of diabetic foot ulcers (DFU). The primary objective is to elucidate the complex molecular mechanisms associated with DFU, providing innovative perspectives for its treatment., Methods: Ninety patients diagnosed with DFU were randomly allocated into three distinct groups. Group A underwent CVSD following wound cleansing to facilitate healing. In Group B, in addition to conventional treatment, negative pressure wound therapy was applied, and rh-aFGF was introduced into normal saline for lavage, building upon the procedures of Group A. Group C received APG along with the interventions applied in Group B. The clinical efficacy of each group was systematically observed and analyzed. Additionally, changes in plasma oxidative stress, inflammatory markers, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) were assessed both before treatment and 14 days post-treatment., Results: Following treatment, all groups exhibited commendable clinical efficacy. Group C demonstrated a superior wound healing rate, reduced frequency of dressing changes, and shorter wound healing duration (P< 0.05). Compared to baseline measurements, the levels of superoxide dismutase and PEDF increased, while malondialdehyde, VEGF, interleukin-6, interleukin-8, and monocyte chemotactic factor MCP-1 decreased in the wound tissue across all groups. Notably, Group C showed the most significant improvement in clinical efficacy and fortification of molecular mechanisms against oxidative stress (all P< 0.05)., Conclusions: The integrative therapeutic approach combining APG with CVSD and rh-aFGF demonstrates notable efficacy in advancing wound healing. This effectiveness is evident through the reduced frequency of dressing changes and alleviation of wound-related pain. Additionally, the treatment regimen improves the cure rate for challenging, refractory wounds. Importance: Sciatica is commonly caused by herniated lumbar disc and contributes to severe pain and prolonged disability. Although acupuncture is widely used by patients with chronic sciatica, the evidence of its efficacy is scarce., Objective: To investigate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture compared with sham acupuncture in patients with chronic sciatica from herniated disk., Design, Settings, and Participants: This was a multicenter 2-arm randomized clinical trial conducted in 6 tertiary-level hospitals in China of patients with chronic sciatica from herniated disk. Participants were recruited from March 25, 2021, to September 23, 2021, with a final follow-up through September 22, 2022. Data analyses were performed from December 2022 to March 2023., Interventions: Participants were randomly assigned to receive 10 sessions of acupuncture (n = 110) or sham acupuncture (n = 110) over 4 weeks. Participants, outcome assessors, and statisticians were blinded., Main Outcomes and Measures: The 2 coprimary outcomes were changes in visual analog scale (VAS) for leg pain and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) from baseline to week 4. Secondary outcomes were adverse events., Results: A total of 216 patients (mean [SD] age, 51.3 [15.2] years; 147 females [68.1%] and 69 males [31.9%]) were included in the analyses. The VAS for leg pain decreased 30.8 mm in the acupuncture group and 14.9 mm in the sham acupuncture group at week 4 (mean difference, -16.0; 95% CI, -21.3 to -10.6; P < .001). The ODI decreased 13.0 points in the acupuncture group and 4.9 points in the sham acupuncture group at week 4 (mean difference, -8.1; 95% CI, -11.1 to -5.1; P < .001). For both VAS and ODI, the between-group difference became apparent starting in week 2 (mean difference, -7.8; 95% CI, -13.0 to -2.5; P = .004 and -5.3; 95% CI, -8.4 to -2.3; P = .001, respectively) and persisted through week 52 (mean difference, -10.8; [95% CI, -16.3 to -5.2; P < .001; and -4.8; 95% CI, -7.8 to -1.7; P = .003, respectively). No serious adverse events occurred., Conclusions and Relevance: This randomized clinical trial found that in patients with chronic sciatica from herniated disk, acupuncture resulted in less pain and better function compared with sham acupuncture at week 4, and these benefits persisted through week 52. Objectives: The pathogen of Pantoea stewartii (Ps) is the causal agent of bacterial disease in corn and various graminaceous plants. Ps has two subspecies, Pantoea stewartii subsp. stewartia (Pss) and Pantoea stewartii subsp. indologenes (Psi). This study presents two complete genomes of Ps strains including ATCC 8199 isolated from maize and PSCN1 causing bacterial wilt in sugarcane. The two bacterial genomes information will be helpful for taxonomy analysis in this genus Pantoea at whole-genome levels and accurately discriminated the two subspecies of Pss and Psi., Data Description: The reference strain ATCC 8199 isolated from maize was purchased from Beijing Biobw Biotechnology Co., Ltd. (China) and the strain of PSCN1 was isolated from sugarcane cultivar YZ08-1095 in Zhanjiang, Guangdong province of China. Two complete genomes were sequenced using Illumina Hiseq (second-generation) and Oxford Nanopore (third-generation) platforms. The genome of the strain ATCC 8199 comprised of 4.78 Mb with an average GC content of 54.03%, along with five plasmids, encoding a total of 4,846 gene with an average gene length of 827 bp. The genome of PSCN1 comprised of 5.03 Mb with an average GC content of 53.78%, along with two plasmids, encoding a total of 4,725 gene with an average gene length of 913 bp. The bacterial pan-genome analysis highlighted the strain ATCC 8199 was clustered into a subgroup with a Pss strain CCUG 26,359 from USA, while the strain PSCN1 was clustered into another subgroup with a Ps strain NRRLB-133 from USA. Mercuric chloride (HgCl 2 ) is a widespread inorganic mercury with digestive toxicity. The pancreas is an important digestive organ in animals, and pancreatic fibrosis (PF) is a major pathological feature of chronic pancreatitis, which can be caused by heavy metals. Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for the animal organism, performing biological functions in the form of selenoproteins, as well as alleviating the toxicity of heavy metals. In this study, we explored the specific mechanisms underlying the protective effect of Se on HgCl 2 -induced pancreatic injury in chickens. Morphological observation and serum biochemical analysis showed that Se attenuated HgCl 2 -caused pancreatic tissue damage and elevated glucose concentration and α-amylase activity. Next, the expression of oxidative stress indicators such as MDA and GSH-Px as well as inflammation-related markers including IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α were detected. Results showed that Se had an inhibitory effect on HgCl 2 -induced oxidative stress and inflammation. Furthermore, we found that Se alleviated HgCl 2 -induced PF by detecting the expression of markers related to PF including TGF-β1, α-SMA, COL1A1, and FN1. Mechanistically, Se attenuated HgCl 2 -induced PF via the MAPK signaling pathway. Importantly, several selenoproteins, especially those with antioxidant activity, were involved in the protective effect of Se on HgCl 2 toxicity. Plants have developed various resistance mechanisms against herbivorous insects through prolonged coevolution. Plant defence responses can be triggered by specific compounds present in insect saliva. Apyrase, a known enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and adenosine diphosphate (ADP) into adenosine monophosphate (AMP) and inorganic phosphorus, has recently been identified in some herbivorous insects. However, whether insect salivary apyrase induces or inhibits plant responses remains poorly understood. In this study, we identified an apyrase-like protein in the salivary proteome of the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, named Sfapyrase. Sfapyrase was primarily expressed in the salivary gland and secreted into plants during insect feeding. Transient expression of Sfapyrase in tobacco and maize enhanced plant resistance and resulted in decreased insect feeding. Knockdown of Sfapyrase through RNA interference led to increased growth and feeding of S. frugiperda. Furthermore, we showed that Sfapyrase activates the jasmonic acid signalling pathway and promotes the synthesis of secondary metabolites, especially benzoxazinoids, thereby enhancing resistance to S. frugiperda. In summary, our findings demonstrated that Sfapyrase acts as a salivary elicitor, inducing maize jasmonic acid defence responses and the production of insect-resistant benzoxazinoids. Objectives: Extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) has emerged as a rescue for refractory cardiac arrest, of which acute coronary syndrome is a common cause. Data on the coronary revascularization strategy in patients receiving ECPR remain limited., Methods: The ECPR databases from two referral hospitals were screened for patients who underwent emergent revascularization. The baseline characteristics were matched 1:1 using propensity score between patients who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and those who received percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Outcomes, including success rate of weaning from extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), hospital survival, and midterm survival in hospital survivors, were compared between CABG and PCI., Results: After matching, most of the patients (95%) had triple vessel disease. Compared with PCI (n = 40), emergent CABG (n = 40) had better early outcomes, in terms of the rates of successful ECMO weaning (71.1% vs 48.7%, P = 0.05) and hospital survival (56.4% versus 32.4%, P = 0.04). After a mean follow-up of 2 years, both revascularization strategies were associated with favourable midterm survival among hospital survivors (75.3% after CABG vs 88.9% after PCI, P = 0.49), with a trend towards fewer reinterventions in patients who underwent CABG (P = 0.07)., Conclusions: In patients who received ECPR because of triple vessel disease, the hospital outcomes were better after emergent CABG than after PCI. Mercuric chloride (HgCl 2 ) is a nephrotoxic contaminant that is widely present in the environment. Selenium (Se) can effectively antagonize the biological toxicity caused by heavy metals. Here, in vivo and in vitro models of Se antagonism to HgCl 2 -induced nephrotoxicity in chickens were established, with the aim of exploring the specific mechanism. Morphological observation and kidney function analysis showed that Se alleviated HgCl 2 -induced kidney tissue injury and cytotoxicity. The results showed that ferroptosis was the primary mechanism for the toxicity of HgCl 2 , as indicated by iron overload and lipid peroxidation. On the one hand, Se significantly prevented HgCl 2 -induced iron overload. On the other hand, Se alleviated the intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels caused by HgCl 2 . Subsequently, we focused on the sources of ROS during HgCl 2 -induced ferroptosis. Mechanically, Se reduced ROS overproduction induced by HgCl 2 through mitochondrial calcium uniporter (MCU)/mitochondrial calcium uptake 1 (MICU1)-mediated mitochondrial calcium ion (Ca 2+ ) overload. Furthermore, a dual luciferase reporter assay demonstrated that MICU1 was the direct target of miR-202-5p. This paper introduces a novel complex-valued recurrent neural networks equalizer (RNNE) designed for a 120-Gbps, 50-km optical 4-level pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM-4) intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) system. By mapping adjacent symbols of PAM-4 signals onto the complex domain, the correlation between two adjacent symbols of PAM-4 signals can be preserved. Based on experimental results, the proposed complex-valued RNNE outperforms the traditional real-valued RNNE with a 1.38-dB system power budget gain at the 7% overhead forward error correction BER threshold of 3.8 × 10 -3 . We believe that complex-valued RNNE has an advantage over real-valued RNNE in processing real-valued signals in IM/DD systems.

Aims: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a genetic disorder characterized by elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels, which increases the risk of premature coronary artery disease. Early detection and treatment are vital, especially in children. To improve FH diagnosis in children, the Japan Atherosclerosis Society (JAS) released new guidelines in July 2022. This study assessed and compared the sensitivity and specificity of the clinical diagnostic criteria from the JAS pediatric FH guidelines of 2017 and 2022., Methods: From September 2020 to March 2023, 69 children with elevated plasma LDL-C levels (≥ 140 mg/dL) were included in a pediatric FH screening project in Kagawa. The children were evaluated using genetic testing alongside the clinical diagnostic criteria from the JAS pediatric FH guidelines of 2017 and 2022., Results: Using the JAS pediatric FH 2017 criteria, eight children were diagnosed as FH-positive and 61 children as FH-negative. The JAS pediatric FH 2022 criteria identified 15 children with definite FH, 31 with probable FH, and 23 with possible FH. Genetic testing detected FH pathogenic variants in 24 children. The sensitivity and specificity for the JAS pediatric FH 2017 criteria were 0.292 and 0.978, respectively. For the JAS pediatric FH 2022 criteria, the sensitivity was 0.542 for definite FH with a specificity of 0.956, and 0.917 for probable FH with a specificity of 0.467., Conclusion: The clinical diagnostic criteria of the JAS pediatric FH 2022 guidelines demonstrated improved diagnostic efficiency compared with those of 2017, as evidenced by the increased sensitivity while preserving specificity.

Pile is a common foundation on the slope, which poses a serious threat to the construction and operation if the slope deformation and causes landslide. In this study, a model device of pile foundation on landslide was independently developed by relative displacement loading between pile and soil to explore the influence of landslide deformation on pile and analysis the soil failure rule and the deformation characteristics of pile in different stages of landslide deformation, a few model tests were completed including the relative displacement between soil and pile from 1 to 17 cm, and the pile diameter and the modulus of slide bed were also considered. The results indicated that: the evolution process of landslide deformation with pile foundation on could be divided into four stages including soil compaction, cracks growth, yield stage, and failure stage; ratios of the maximum soil pressure and bending moment growth from the soil compaction stage to the cracks growth stage to the total growth in these four stages are both exceeding 60%; the soil pressure increases with the increase of pile diameter and sliding bed modulus. Therefore, it is best to effectively monitor and control the landslide in the initial soil compression stage that in soil compaction stage and methods such as increasing pile foundations or reinforcing the sliding bed can be used for protection., (© 2024. Over the years, a number of state-of-the-art data analysis tools have been developed to provide a comprehensive analysis of data collected from gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Unfortunately, the time shift problem remains unsolved in these tools. Here, we developed a novel comprehensive data analysis strategy for GC-MS-based untargeted metabolomics (AntDAS-GCMS) to perform total ion chromatogram peak detection, peak resolution, time shift correction, component registration, statistical analysis, and compound identification. Time shift correction was specifically optimized in this work. The information on mass spectra and elution profiles of compounds was used to search for inherent landmarks within analyzed samples to resolve the time shift problem across samples efficiently and accurately. The performance of our AntDAS-GCMS was comprehensively investigated by using four complex GC-MS data sets with various types of time shift problems. Meanwhile, AntDAS-GCMS was compared with advanced GC-MS data analysis tools and classic time shift correction methods. Results indicated that AntDAS-GCMS could achieve the best performance compared to the other methods.

We present a spectral-scanning frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) 3D imaging system capable of producing high-resolution depth maps with an extended field of view (FOV). By employing a multipass configuration with an echelle grating, the system achieves an FOV of 5.5° along the grating axis. The resulting depth maps have a resolution of 70 × 40 pixels, with a depth resolution of 5.1 mm. The system employs an echelle grating for beam steering and leverages the multipass configuration for angular FOV magnification. Quantitative depth measurements and 3D imaging results of a static 3D-printed depth variation target are demonstrated. The proposed approach offers a promising solution for enhancing the FOV of spectral-scanning FMCW LiDAR systems within a limited wavelength-swept range, thereby reducing system complexity and cost, paving the way for improved 3D imaging applications.

Silicon photonics devices benefit greatly from a partially etched platform and inverse design. Herein, we propose a bi-layer polarization splitter and rotator with a topology pattern and demonstrate it on a silicon-on-insulator platform. Our device exhibits a significantly reduced physical footprint of only 2µ m ×6µ m , compared to traditional directional couplers and tapered waveguides. The device accomplishes the functions of polarization conversion and separation in such a compact design without redundant tapered or bending waveguides. The tested minimum insertion loss with the fabrication batch reaches 0.57 and 0.67 dB for TE and TM modes, respectively. The TE mode demonstrates a wider bandwidth and lower ILs than the TM modes, averaging around 1 dB from 1530 to 1565 nm. The M modes exhibit approximately 2 dB ILs at the same wavelength range, decreasing to about 1 dB between 1565 and 1580 nm. Improved designs and fabrication conditions strongly suggest the potential for further performance enhancement in the device. This successful initiative validates the exceptional performance resulting from the integration of the partially etched platform and inverse design, providing valuable insights for future photonic integrated device designs.

Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) is an important sugar and biofuel crop in the world. It is frequently subjected to drought stress, thus causing considerable economic losses. Transgenic technology is an effective breeding approach to improve sugarcane tolerance to drought using drought-inducible promoter(s) to activate drought-resistance gene(s). In this study, six different promoters were cloned from sugarcane bacilliform virus (SCBV) genotypes exhibiting high genetic diversity. In β-glucuronidase (GUS) assays, expression of one of these promoters (P SCBV-YZ2060 ) is similar to the one driven by the CaMV 35S promoter and >90% higher compared to the other cloned promoters and Ubi1. Three SCBV promoters (P SCBV-YZ2060 , P SCBV-TX , and P SCBV-CHN2 ) function as drought-induced promoters in transgenic Arabidopsis plants. In Arabidopsis, GUS activity driven by promoter P SCBV-YZ2060 is also upregulated by abscisic acid (ABA) and is 2.2-5.5-fold higher when compared to the same activity of two plant native promoters (P ScRD29A from sugarcane and P AtRD29A from Arabidopsis). Mutation analysis revealed that a putative promoter region 1 (PPR1) and two ABA response elements (ABREs) are required in promoter P SCBV-YZ2060 to confer drought stress response and ABA induction. Yeast one-hybrid and electrophoretic mobility shift assays uncovered that transcription factors ScbZIP72 from sugarcane and AREB1 from Arabidopsis bind with two ABREs of promoter P SCBV-YZ2060 . After ABA treatment or drought stress, the expression levels of endogenous ScbZIP72 and heterologous GUS are significantly increased in P SCBV-YZ2060 :GUS transgenic sugarcane plants. Iron, an essential trace element, is involved in various physiological processes; however, consumption of excessive iron possesses detrimental effects. In practical feed production, the iron content added to feeds often far exceeds the actual demand, resulting in an excess of iron in the body. The liver as a central regulator of iron homeostasis is susceptible to damage caused by disorders in iron metabolism. A model of hepatic iron overload in laying hens was developed in this study by incorporating iron into their diet, and the specific mechanisms underlying iron overload-induced hepatic injury were investigated. Firstly, this study revealed that a high-iron diet resulted in hepatic iron overload, accompanied by impaired liver function. Next, assessment of oxidative stress markers indicated a decrease in activities of T-SOD and CAT, coupled with an increase in MDA content, pointing to the iron-overloaded liver oxidative stress. Thirdly, the impact of iron overload on hepatic glycolipid and bile acid metabolism-related gene expressions were explored, including PPAR-α, GLUT2, and CYP7A1, highlighting disruptions in hepatic metabolism. Subsequently, analyses of inflammation-related genes such as iNOS and IL-1β at both protein and mRNA levels demonstrated the presence of inflammation in the liver under conditions of dietary iron overload. Overall, this study provided comprehensive evidence that dietary iron overload contributed to disorders in glycolipid and bile acid metabolism, accompanied by inflammatory responses in laying hens. Plants must adapt to the complex effects of several stressors brought on by global warming, which may result in interaction and superposition effects between diverse stressors. Few reports are available on how drought stress affects Xanthomonas albilineans ( Xa ) infection in sugarcane ( Saccharum spp. hybrids). Drought and leaf scald resistance were identified on 16 sugarcane cultivars using Xa inoculation and soil drought treatments, respectively. Subsequently, four cultivars contrasting to drought and leaf scald resistance were used to explore the mechanisms of drought affecting Xa -sugarcane interaction. Drought stress significantly increased the occurrence of leaf scald and Xa populations in susceptible cultivars but had no obvious effect on resistant cultivars. The ROS bursting and scavenging system was significantly activated in sugarcane in the process of Xa infection, particularly in the resistant cultivars. Compared with Xa infection alone, defense response via the ROS generating and scavenging system was obviously weakened in sugarcane (especially in susceptible cultivars) under Xa infection plus drought stress. Collectively, ROS might play a crucial role involving sugarcane defense against combined effects of Xa infection and drought stress.

The plant endophytic bacteria are a great source of nature insecticides. However, no such endophytic bacteria have been found in sugarcane, to address this gap, we isolated and identified a strain of Serratia marcescens with moderate insecticidal activity from sugarcane. Taken armyworm Mythimna separata as example, the mortality rates of oral infection and injection infection were 47.06 % and 91 %, respectively. The SM has significant negative affect on the growth, development, and reproduction of M. separata. After determining that these insecticidal substances, 33 potential virulence proteins were screened through the identification and prediction of bacterial proteins. Later we confirmed serralysin was a vital toxic protein from SM that caused M. separata death by prokaryotic expression. In addition, we also found that the intestinal tissue cells infected with SM or serralysin were severely diseased, which may be a major factor in M. separata demise. Finally, through gene expression level, protein molecular docking, we found the aminopeptidase-N would be one of the potential receptors of serralysin. Taken together, our findings indicate that sugarcane endophyte S. marcescens may be beneficial for pest control in sugarcane and explain its insecticidal mechanism. Mercuric chloride (HgCl 2 ), a widespread environmental pollutant, induces ferroptosis in chicken embryonic kidney (CEK) cells. Whereas activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4), a critical mediator of oxidative homeostasis, plays a dual role in ferroptosis, but its precise mechanisms in HgCl 2 -induced ferroptosis remain elusive. This study aims to investigate the function and molecular mechanism of ATF4 in HgCl 2 -induced ferroptosis. Our results revealed that ATF4 was downregulated during HgCl 2 -induced ferroptosis in CEK cells. Surprisingly, HgCl 2 exposure has no significant impact on ATF4 mRNA level. Further investigation indicated that HgCl 2 enhanced the expression of the E3 ligase beta-transducin repeat-containing protein (β-TrCP) and increased ATF4 ubiquitination. Subsequent findings identified that miR-15b-5p as an upstream modulator of β-TrCP, with miR-15b-5p downregulation observed in HgCl 2 -exposed CEK cells. Importantly, miR-15b-5p mimics suppressed β-TrCP expression and reversed HgCl 2 -induced cellular ferroptosis. Mechanistically, HgCl 2 inhibited miR-15b-5p, and promoted β-TrCP-mediated ubiquitin degradation of ATF4, thereby inhibited the expression of antioxidant-related target genes and promoted ferroptosis. Background: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a crucial dialysis method for treating end-stage kidney disease. However, its use is restricted due to high glucose-induced peritoneal injury and hyperglycaemia, particularly in patients with diabetes mellitus. In this study, we investigated whether partially replacing d-glucose with the rare sugar d-allose could ameliorate peritoneal injury and hyperglycaemia induced by peritoneal dialysis fluid (PDF)., Methods: Rat peritoneal mesothelial cells (RPMCs) were exposed to a medium containing d-glucose or d-glucose partially replaced with different concentrations of d-allose. Cell viability, oxidative stress and cytokine production were evaluated. Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were administrated saline, a PDF containing 4% d-glucose (PDF-G4.0%) or a PDF containing 3.6% d-glucose and 0.4% d-allose (PDF-G3.6%/A0.4%) once a day for 4 weeks. Peritoneal injury and PD efficiency were assessed using immuno-histological staining and peritoneal equilibration test, respectively. Blood glucose levels were measured over 120 min following a single injection of saline or PDFs to 24-h fasted SD rats., Results: In RPMCs, the partial replacement of d-glucose with d-allose increased cell viability and decreased oxidative stress and cytokine production compared to d-glucose alone. Despite the PDF-G3.6%/A0.4% having a lower d-glucose concentration compared to PDF-G4.0%, there were no significant changes in osmolality. Postoperative delirium (POD) is a severe postoperative complication characterized by delirium-like symptoms. So far, no effective preventable strategy for POD prevention has been identified. Reports show that the consumption of green tea polyphenols (GTP) is associated with better cognitive function by modulating the composition of gut microbiota. Whether GTP also play a role in alleviating POD through gut microbiota is unknown. Herein, we studied the effect of prolonged (eight weeks) GTP intake on postoperative delirium in C57BL/6 mice with laparotomies under isoflurane anesthesia (anesthesia/surgery). We subsequently investigated anesthesia/surgery caused behavioral changes and increased the expression of malondialdehyde (MAD), an oxidative stress marker, and the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), an antioxidant marker, in the mice at 6 h after anesthesia/surgery. However, GTP administration reversed these changes and alleviated anesthesia/surgery-induced decrease in the abundance of gut bacterial genera, Roseburia . Further, fecal microbiota transplant demonstrated that compared with mice in the control group, treatment of C57BL/6 mice with feces from GTP-treated mice had a slight effect on the behavioral changes of mice. Objective: YAP1 plays a dual role as an oncogene and tumor suppressor gene in several tumors; differentiating between these roles may depend on the YAP1 phosphorylation pattern. The specific function of YAP1 in B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL), however, is currently unclear. Thus, in the present study, the role of YAP1 in B-ALL was investigated using relevant cell lines and patient datasets., Methods: The effects of shRNA-mediated knockdown on YAP1 and LATS1 levels in the NALM6 and MOLT-4 cell lines were examined using Western blotting, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, flow cytometry, immunostaining, and nude mouse subcutaneous tumorigenesis experiments. Gene expression levels of Hippo pathway-related molecules before and after verteporfin (VP) treatment were compared using RNA-Seq to identify significant Hippo pathway-related genes in NALM6 cells., Results: Patients with ALL showing high YAP1 expression and low YAP1-Ser127 phosphorylation levels had worse prognoses than those with low YAP1 protein expression and high YAP1-Ser127 phosphorylation levels. YAP1-Ser127 phosphorylation levels were lower in NALM6 cells than in MOLT-4 and control cells; YAP1 was distributed in the nuclei in NALM6 cells. Knockdown of YAP1 inhibited MOLT-4 and NALM6 cell proliferation and arrested the NALM6 cell cycle in the G0/G1 phase. Before and after VP treatment, the expression of the upstream gene LATS1 was upregulated; its overexpression promoted YAP1-Ser127 phosphorylation. Further, YAP1 was distributed in the plasma., Conclusion: LATS1 may downregulate YAP1-Ser127 phosphorylation and maintain B-ALL cell function; thus, VP, which targets this axis, may serve as a new therapeutic method for improving the outcomes for B-ALL patients., (© 2024. Background: Radiotherapy (RT) is an effective and available local treatment for patients with refractory or relapsed (R/R) aggressive B-cell lymphomas. However, the value of hypofractionated RT in this setting has not been confirmed., Methods: We retrospectively analyzed patients with R/R aggressive B-cell lymphoma who received hypofractionated RT between January 2020 and August 2022 at a single institution. The objective response rate (ORR), overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS) and acute side effects were analyzed., Results: A total of 30 patients were included. The median dose for residual disease was 36 Gy, at a dose per fraction of 2.3-5 Gy. After RT, the ORR and complete response (CR) rates were 90% and 80%, respectively. With a median follow-up of 10 months (range, 2-27 months), 10 patients (33.3%) experienced disease progression and three died. The 1-year OS and PFS rates for all patients were 81.8% and 66.3%, respectively. The majority (8/10) of post-RT progressions involved out-of-field relapses. Patients with relapsed diseases, no response to systemic therapy, multiple lesions at the time of RT, and no response to RT were associated with out-of-field relapses. PFS was associated with response to RT (P = 0.001) and numbers of residual sites (P < 0.001). No serious non-hematological adverse effects (≥ grade 3) associated with RT were reported., Conclusion: These data suggest that hypofractionated RT was effective and tolerable for patients with R/R aggressive B-cell lymphoma, especially for those that exhibited localized residual disease., (© 2024. Background: Physical education is pivotal in our country's education reform. Urban schools have notably enhanced the intensity of physical education in recent years. However, the effects of physical education on students' anxiety, depression, and self-esteem levels, as well as their interrelations, remain unexplored., Aim: To analyze the influence of physical education on students' anxiety, depression, and self-esteem., Methods: This study employed a cross-sectional design. A stratified cluster sampling method was used to select 478 first-year university students. Self-administered questionnaires were used to investigate the physical education status and basic information of college students. We used the Physical Activity Rank Scale-3 (PARS-3), Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), and Self-Esteem Scale (SES) to assess the level of exercise, anxiety, depression, and self-esteem. Multiple Logistic regression was used to analyze the factors influencing anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. The receiver operating characteristic curve and area under the curve (AUC) were used to evaluate the predictive ability of PARS-3 scores for anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. Spearman's correlation was used to analyze the correlations among the PARS-3, SAS, SDS, and SES., Results: Compared with the domestic norms, SAS and SDS scores were higher, and SES scores were lower ( P < 0.05). Among the participants, 210 (43.93%) had PARS-3 scores below 20, 94 (19.67%) had scores of 20-42, and 174 (36.40%) had scores above 42. After adjusting for daily sleep time, gender, being an only child, major, father's educational background, mother's educational background, and family residence, PARS-3 scores were independent influencing factors for anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem ( P < 0.05). The AUC of PARS-3 scores predicting anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem were 0.805 (0.760-0.849), 0.799 (0.755-0.843), and 0.831 (0.788-0.874), respectively. The sensitivities were 0.799, 0.801, and 0.748, and the specificities were 0.743, 0.716, and 0.814, respectively. PARS-3 was negatively correlated with SAS and SDS scores ( r = -0.566, -0.621, both P < 0.001) and positively correlated with SES scores ( r = -0.621, P < 0.001). Background: To compare the late outcomes between mechanical and bioprostheses after isolated mitral valve replacement (MVR) in dialysis-dependent patients., Methods: A nationwide propensity-matched retrospective cohort study was conducted involving dialysis patients who underwent primary mitral replacement between 2001 and 2018. Ten-year postoperative outcomes were compared between mitral bioprosthesis and mechanical prosthesis using the Cox proportional hazard model and restricted mean survival time (RMST)., Results: The all-cause mortality was 20.8 and 13.0 events per 100 person-years, with a 10-year RMST of 7.40 and 7.31 years for bioprosthesis and mechanical prosthesis, respectively. Major bleeding was the most common adverse event for both bioprosthesis and mechanical prosthesis, with an incidence rate of 19.5 and 19.1 events per 100 person-years, respectively. The incidence of valve reoperation was higher among those who received bioprosthesis (0.55 events per 100 person-years). After 1:1 matching, the all-cause mortality was 15.45 and 14.54 events per 100 person-years for bioprosthesis and mechanical prosthesis, respectively. The RMST at 10 years was comparable between the two groups after matching (5.10 years for bioprosthesis vs. 4.59 years for mechanical prosthesis), with an RMST difference of -0.03. Further, no difference was observed in the incidence of major adverse valve-related events between bioprosthesis and mechanical valves. However, bioprosthesis was associated with a higher incidence of mitral valve reoperation among all major adverse events (RMST difference -0.24 years, 95% CI -0.48 to -0.01, P =0.047)., Conclusions: This study found no association between valve selection and long-term survival outcomes in dialysis patients after MVR. However, bioprosthetic valves may be associated with a slightly higher incidence of reoperation, while other valve-related adverse events, including major bleeding and stroke, were comparable between the two types of prostheses., (Copyright © 2023 The Author(s). Background: Improved durability of modern biologic prostheses and growing experience with the transcatheter valve-in-valve technique have contributed to a substantial increase in the use of bioprostheses in younger patients. However, discussion of prosthetic valve selection in dialysis patients remains scarce as the guidelines are updated. This study aims to compare long-term outcomes between propensity score-matched cohorts of dialysis patients who underwent primary aortic valve replacement with a mechanical prosthesis or a bioprosthesis., Materials and Methods: Longitudinal data of dialysis patients who underwent primary aortic valve replacement between 1 January 2001 and 31 December 2018, were retrieved from the National Health Insurance Research Database., Results: A total of 891 eligible patients were identified, of whom 243 ideally matched pairs of patients were analyzed. There was no significant difference in all-cause mortality (hazard ratio 1.11, 95% CI: 0.88-1.40) or the incidence of major adverse prosthesis-related events between the two groups (hazard ratio 1.03, 95% CI: 0.84-1.25). In patients younger than 50 years of age, using a mechanical prosthesis was associated with a significantly longer survival time across 10 years of follow-up than using a bioprosthesis (restricted mean survival time) at 10 years: 7.24 (95% CI: 6.33-8.14) years for mechanical prosthesis versus 5.25 (95% CI: 4.25-6.25) years for bioprosthesis, restricted mean survival time difference 1.99 years, 95% CI: -3.34 to -0.64)., Conclusion: A 2-year survival gain in favor of mechanical prostheses was identified in dialysis patients younger than 50 years. The short-reach optical transmission systems based on intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) are gradually evolving into the networks with complex link topologies and connections, especially inside the data center. Multipath interference (MPI) introduces irregular fluctuations in the 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) signals and therefore affects the transmission performance. This Letter proposes an adaptive decision threshold (ADT) scheme to dynamically update the decision threshold, which can track the signal fluctuations in real time and mitigate the impact of MPI noise on the transmitted PAM4 signals. Numerical simulation results present that the proposed ADT scheme can significantly improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of the MPI-impaired PAM4 transmission system considering different MPI levels and laser linewidths. In a 50-Gbps PAM4 transmission system, the ADT can improve the MPI tolerance by more than beyond 6 dB when the BER reaches the KP4-forward error correction (FEC) criterion (2.4 × 10 -4 ), presenting a better denoising performance than the existing MPI-mitigation algorithms A1 and A2. Moreover, the ADT scheme offers a lower computation complexity compared with A1 and A2, making it more practical for implementation.

Spectrally selective narrowband photodetection is critical for near-infrared (NIR) imaging applications, such as for communicationand night-vision utilities. It is a long-standing challenge for detectors based on silicon, to achieve narrowband photodetection without integrating any optical filters. Here, this work demonstrates a NIR nanograting Si/organic (PBDBT-DTBT:BTP-4F) heterojunction photodetector (PD), which for the first time obtains the full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) of only 26 nm and fast response of 74 µs at 895 nm. The response peak can be successfully tailored from 895 to 977 nm. The sharp and narrow response NIR peak is inherently attributed to the coherent overlapping between the NIR transmission spectrum of organic layer and diffraction enhanced absorption peak of patterned nanograting Si substrates. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) physics calculation confirms the resonant enhancement peaks, which is well consistent with the experiment results. Meanwhile, the relative characterization indicates that the introduction of the organic film can promote carrier transfer and charge collection, facilitating efficient photocurrent generation. This study aimed to identify glycosylation-related genes associated with lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) prognosis through comprehensive bioinformatic analysis. Glycosylation-related genes were identified from the Human Gene Nomenclature Committee, and LUAD prognostic genes were screened from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO)-GSE68465 datasets. Glycosylation risk score (GLRS) was calculated to predict LUAD prognostic risk. Samples were grouped into GLRS-high and GLRS-low and compared. The Tumor Immune Dysfunction and Exclusion (TIDE) score was computed to assess the antitumor immune escape possibility after immunotherapy. From 213 glycosylation-related genes, five gene signatures served as prognostic LUAD predictors using univariate and stepwise Cox regression analyses. GLRS-based models were constructed using TCGA and GSE68465 samples; their sensitivity and specificity in predicting LUAD prognosis were confirmed. GLRS was an independent LUAD prognostic factor and contributed to the nomogram to predict patient survival. High GLRS was associated with advanced tumor stage and higher mutation frequencies, estimate scores, and TIDE scores. GLRS-high and GLRS-low patients differed in immune cell infiltration and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related gene expression. Thus, we propose five glycosylation-related gene signatures to predict overall survival and prognostic risks of LUAD. Their regulatory roles may be related to immune invasion, immunotherapy response, mutation, and EMT.

Skeletal muscle satellite cells (SMSCs), known as muscle stem cells, play an important role in muscle embryonic development, post-birth growth, and regeneration after injury. Selenoprotein K (SELENOK), an endoplasmic reticulum (ER) resident selenoprotein, is known to regulate calcium ion (Ca 2+ ) flux and ER stress (ERS). SELENOK deficiency is involved in dietary selenium deficiency-induced muscle injury, but the regulatory mechanisms of SELENOK in SMSCs development remain poorly explored in chicken. Here, we established a SELENOK deficient model to explore the role of SELENOK in SMSCs. SELENOK knockdown inhibited SMSCs proliferation and differentiation by regulating the protein levels of paired box 7 (Pax7), myogenic factor 5 (Myf5), CyclinD1, myogenic differentiation (MyoD), and Myf6. Further analysis exhibited that SELENOK knockdown markedly activated the ERS signaling pathways, which ultimately induced apoptosis in SMSCs. SELENOK knockdown-induced ERS is related with ER Ca 2+ ([Ca 2+ ] ER ) overload via decreasing the protein levels of STIM2, Orai1, palmitoylation of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor 1 (IP3R1), phospholamban (PLN), and plasma membrane Ca 2+ -ATPase (PMCA) while increasing the protein levels of sarco/endoplasmic Ca 2+ -ATPase 1 (SERCA1) and Na + /Ca 2+ exchanger 1 (NCX1). Moreover, thimerosal, an activator of IP3R1, reversed the overload of [Ca 2+ ] ER , ERS, and subsequent apoptosis caused by SELENOK knockdown. These findings indicated that SELENOK knockdown triggered ERS driven by intracellular Ca 2+ dyshomeostasis and further induced apoptosis, which ultimately inhibited SMSCs proliferation and differentiation., (Copyright © 2023 The Authors. Background: To assess the effect and safety of probiotics for treating urticaria., Methods: Randomized controlled trial (RCT) papers on the probiotics treatment published before May 2019 were retrieved from various databases like PubMed, EMbase, MEDLINE (Ovid), SCI-Hub, Springer, ClinicalKey, VIP, and CNKI. The treatment plan that we include are oral administration of single probiotic, multiple probiotics, and the combination of probiotics and antihistamines. Meta-analysis of the data was performed by RevMan 5.3 software., Results: A total of nine RCT papers were included: four papers for oral administration of single probiotic, three papers for oral administration of multiple probiotics, and two papers for oral administration of a probiotic combined with antihistamines. The results of meta-analysis showed that the therapeutic effect of the probiotic group was significantly higher than the control group (placebo or antihistamines) (RR = 1.09, 95% CI: 1.03-1.16, p = 0.006). And compared with the placebo group, the therapeutic effect of single probiotic group was significantly improved (RR = 1.11, 95% CI: 1.01-1.21, p = 0.03). Regarding therapeutic effect, there was no statistically significant difference between the multiple probiotics group and placebo group (RR = 1.00, 95% CI: 0.94 ~ 1.07, p = 0.91); the therapeutic effect of single probiotic combined antihistamine group was significantly higher than the antihistamine group (RR = 1.13, 95% CI: 1.07-1.19, p < 0.0001). Regarding the incidence of adverse reactions, there was no significant difference between the probiotic group and the control group (p = 0.46)., Conclusion: The treatment plan of oral administration of probiotics has significant therapeutic effects on urticaria, but the therapeutic effects of the administration of multiple probiotics and the safety of probiotic therapy are still not yet obvious. All polarization-maintaining (PM) linear cavity mode-locked fiber lasers are promising ultrafast laser sources due to their compactness and environmental robustness. Here, we demonstrate a linear cavity fiber laser with all-PM configuration experimentally and investigate the mode-locking formation of the laser using a machine-learning iterative optimization method based on the Gaussian process. The optimization algorithm can converge rapidly after only 30 runs. Using the optimized parameters, we simulate the generation of mode-locked pulses from noise. The output spectrum and pulse energy are highly consistent with the experiment. Furthermore, we describe the intracavity dynamic evolution under group velocity mismatch. We then show that the pulse trapping induced by cross-phase modulation leads to the overcompensated time synchronization between the orthogonally polarized components.

We propose and demonstrate an efficient capacity enhancement scheme for bandlimited underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) systems by utilizing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with interleaved subcarrier number modulation (OFDM-ISNM). In the proposed OFDM-ISNM, joint number and constellation mapping/de-mapping is utilized to avoid error propagation and subblock interleaving is further applied to address the low-pass effect of the bandlimited UOWC system. The feasibility and superiority of the proposed OFDM-ISNM scheme for practical bandlimited UOWC systems have been verified through both simulations and experiments. The obtained results demonstrate that the proposed OFDM-ISNM scheme is capable of efficiently improving the achievable data rate of the bandlimited UOWC system. Specifically, the experimental results show a significant 28.6% capacity enhancement by OFDM-ISNM over other benchmark schemes, achieving a data rate of 3.6 Gbps through a 2-m water channel.

Auxin response factor (ARF) is a critical regulator in the auxin signaling pathway, involved in a variety of plant biological processes. Here, gene members of 24 SpapARFs and 39 SpnpARFs were identified in two genomes of Saccharum spontaneum clones AP85-441 and Np-X, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis showed that all ARF genes were clustered into four clades, which is identical to those ARF genes in maize ( Zea mays ) and sorghum ( Sorghum bicolor ). The gene structure and domain composition of this ARF family are conserved to a large degree across plant species. The SpapARF and SpnpARF genes were unevenly distributed on chromosomes 1-8 and 1-10 in the two genomes of AP85-441 and Np-X, respectively. The post-transcriptional regulation of ARF genes likely involves sugarcane against various stressors through a miRNA-medicated pathway. Expression levels of six representative ShARF genes were analyzed by qRT-PCR assays on two sugarcane cultivars [LCP85-384 (resistant to leaf scald) and ROC20 (susceptible to leaf scald)] triggered by Acidovorax avenae subsp. avenae ( Aaa ) and Xanthomonas albilineans ( Xa ) infections and salicylic acid (SA) treatment. ShARF04 functioned as a positive regulator under Xa and Aaa stress, whereas it was a negative regulator under SA treatment. ShARF07/17 genes played positive roles against both pathogenic bacteria and SA stresses. Additionally, ShARF22 was negatively modulated by Xa and Aaa stimuli in both cultivars, particularly LCP85-384. These findings imply that sugarcane ARFs exhibit functional redundancy and divergence against stressful conditions.
