The phytochemical study on the stems and leaves of Morinda citrifolia L. resulted in the isolation of a new naturally occurring bisabolane-type sesquiterpenoid, morincitrinoid A (1), together with five known analogues (2–6). The chemical structure of 1 was elucidated by comprehensive spectral analyses. The known compounds 2–6 were identified by comparing their spectral data with those reported in the literature, which were isolated from M. citrifolia for the first time. In addition, the anti-inflammatory and anti-HIV activities of compounds 1–6 were evaluated in vitro. Compounds 1–6 displayed significant inhibitory activities on NO (nitric oxide) production induced by lipopolysaccharide in mouse macrophage RAW 264.7 cells with IC50 values ranging from 0.98 ± 0.07 to 6.32 ± 0.11 μM, which was comparable to hydrocortisone. Meanwhile, compounds 1–6 showed remarkable anti-HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT) effects with the EC50 values ranging from 0.16 to 6.29 μM.

The phytochemical investigation on the fruits of Morinda citrifolia led to the isolation and characterization of a new anthraquinone, moricitrifone (1), along with seven known anthraquinones (2–8). The chemical structure of 1 was elucidated by extensive spectral analyses. The known compounds (2–8) were identified by comparing their spectral data with those reported in the literature. The antiproliferative activities of all isolated anthraquinones (1–8) against five human cancer cell lines: HL-60, SMMC-7721, A-549, MCF-7 and SW480 were evaluated in vitro. Compounds 1–8 exhibited remarkable antiproliferative activities with IC50 values ranging from 0.26 ± 0.05 to 16.58 ± 0.18 μM, which were comparable to those of doxorubicin.

The investigation on the stems and leaves of Clausena sanki led to the isolation of a previously undescribed bisabolane sesquiterpene, clausemargic A (1), together with six known analogues (2–7). The structure of 1 was elucidated by extensive spectroscopic methods and the known compounds were identified by comparisons with data reported in the literature. All known compounds (2–7) were isolated from C. sanki for the first time. All isolated compounds were evaluated for their anti-inflammatory activities via examining the inhibitory activity on nitric oxide (NO) production induced by lipopolysaccharide in mouse macrophage RAW 264.7 cells in vitro. Compounds 1–7 showed significant inhibitory activities with IC50 values comparable to that of hydrocortisone.

A new naturally occurring trinoreudesmane sesquiterpene, artahongkongol A (1), together with seven known eudesmane sesquiterpenes (2−8), was isolated from the stems and leaves of Artabotrys hongkongensis Hance. Among them, 1 is a rare trinoreudesmane sesquiterpene containing 12 carbon atoms on the carbon skeleton. All known compounds (2−8) were isolated from the genus Artabotrys for the first time. The structure of 1 was elucidated by extensive spectroscopic methods and the known compounds were identified by comparisons with data reported in the literature. All isolated compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxicities against five human cancer cell lines: HL-60, SMMC-7721, A-549, MCF-7 and SW480 in vitro. Compounds 1−8 showed significant inhibitory effects against various human cancer cell lines with IC50 values ranging from 0.57 to 15.68 μM.

All known compounds (2–6) were isolated from C. lenis for the first time. All isolated compounds were evaluated for their their antiproliferative activities against five human cancer cell lines: HL-60, SMMC-7721, A-549, MCF-7 and SW480 in vitro. Compounds 1–6 showed significant antiproliferative effects with IC50 values ranging from 0.36 to 16.48 μM.

All known compounds (2–12) were isolated from C. emarginata for the first time. All isolated compounds were evaluated for their their antiproliferative activities against five human cancer cell lines: HL-60, SMMC-7721, A-549, MCF-7 and SW480 in vitro. Compounds 1–12 showed significant antiproliferative effects with IC50 values ranging from 0.28 to 15.18 μM.

Phytochemical investigation on the stems and leaves of Trigonostemon howii resulted in the isolation of a new abietane diterpenoid, trigohowimine A (1), along with seven known structurally diverse diterpenoids (2–8). The structure of 1 was elucidated by extensive spectroscopic methods and the known compounds were identified by comparison with data reported in the literature. New compound 1 was evaluated for its cytotoxicities against five human cancer cell lines: HL-60, SMMC-7721, A-549, MCF-7 and SW480. Compound 1 showed significant inhibitory effects against various human cancer cell lines with IC50 values ranging from 0.82 to 8.53 μM.

All isolated compounds were evaluated for their antiproliferative activities against five human cancer cell lines: HL-60, SMMC-7721, A-549, MCF-7 and SW480 in vitro. Compounds 1−8 showed significant antiproliferative effects against several human cancer cell lines with IC50 values ranging from 0.16 to 12.68 μM.

The structure of 1 was elucidated by extensive spectroscopic methods and the known compounds were identified by comparisons with data reported in the literature. All known compounds (2–8) were isolated from C. hainanensis for the first time. All isolated compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxicities against five human cancer cell lines: HL-60, SMMC-7721, A-549, MCF-7 and SW480 in vitro. Compounds 1–8 exhibited significant inhibitory effects with IC50 values ranging from 1.36 to 18.96 μM.
