As an extension of the personal and intellectual conversations that took place in the sister-scholar group consisting of four East Asian international doctoral students from China and South Korea, in this article, we narrate and examine our (counter)stories traversing between different spaces and across time. These narratives center our racial, linguistic, social, and academic experiences and illustrate our processes of awakening, resistance, and collective healing. We used transnationalism and Asian Critical Theory as our theoretical guide, and collaborative autoethnography as our methodology. Through the canvas of (counter)stories, we (a) refuse dominant views and definitions of what it means to be Asian in the United States, (b) resist the simplistic and monolithic ways of understanding our existence and experiences as international students, and (c) challenge the academic community and broader society to develop more complex and critical social praxis regarding race, culture, and relations of power.

This paper examines how two language educators of color developed critical multilingual language awareness (CMLA) in a combined youth participatory action research and teacher education program. Specifically, as a multilingual and diverse group of educators, we chose to use Latin@/o Critical Theory (LatCrit) as our methodology to align with the epistemological framework of YPAR. By sharing the lived experiences and insights of the two educators over the course of the program, our reflexive study demonstrates how multimodal ways of meaning making supported them in challenging deficient perspectives of minoritized languages and in changing their pedagogical practices to be more equitable. By implementing YPAR programs with a clear focus on CMLA, we become aware of our own language ideologies and grow to understand the socio-political discourses that inform our interactions with youth. Implications include the significance of incorporating multimodality and participatory pedagogies into teacher education and thereby facilitating opportunities for teacher candidates to gain awareness of the power dynamics in multilingual education.

In our civic engagement afterschool program in the southeast of the United States, our youth and adult participants used a wide range of modalities including mapping, rapping, drawing, and performance to construct and convey their unique visions of school and community spaces. The purpose of this methodological paper is to explore systemic functional multimodal discourse analysis (SF MDA) as a potential resource to gauge the effectiveness of such humanizing and multimodal spaces in positioning youth as civic leaders. Data collected for this study included curriculum materials, descriptive field notes, and video recordings of the multimodal processes of focal youth across five program modules. Informed by an SF MDA perspective, our multimodal transcriptions illustrate how youth participants engaged in an intersemiotic complementarity of modalities and languages to share their insights and enact civic identities.

Student-centered theory is the fundamental concept of current education reform, as well as the fundamental requirement of classroom instruction. Student-centered education has gone through four stages: enlightenment, development, formal proposal, and in-depth investigation. Student-centered education reform is a long-term investigation that emphasizes that by emphasizing students’ dominant position, teachers return the classroom to students and realize the leap of students’ freedom. However, the complexity of the real education field creates a new teaching dilemma due to the centrality of its theory, resulting in an excessive burden on students’ academic burden and the exile of educators’ responsibility. The way to fix the student center theory is to consider both the survival and development of students, ensure the return and responsibility of educators, and implement a student-centered reform that takes care of reality, according to the composition of the educational field and the core of the student center.

This paper examines recent political debates surrounding data disaggregation in education policy in one US state, and analyses the discourses taken up by supporters and opponents of these policies. Analysis suggests how discourses move across time and space, and focuses on how these discourses are contextualized and entextualized in social media, interaction, and public texts. The paper contributes to our knowledge of a major, but understudied, US education policy movement, and provides insights into how similar discourses are variably taken up by political actors for divergent ends.
