Genotypes (G) 1, 3, and 5 of the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) have been isolated in China, but the dominant genotype circulating in Chinese coastal areas remains unknown. We searched for G5 JEV-infected cases and attempted to elucidate which JEV genotype was most closely related to human Japanese encephalitis (JE) in the coastal provinces of China. In this study, we collected serum specimens from patients with JE in three coastal provinces of China (Guangdong, Zhejiang, and Shandong) from 2018 to 2020 and conducted JEV cross-neutralization tests against G1, G3, and G5. Acute serum specimens from clinically reported JE cases were obtained for laboratory confirmation from hospitals in Shandong (92 patients), Zhejiang (192 patients), and Guangdong (77 patients), China, from 2018 to 2020. Seventy of the 361 serum specimens were laboratory-confirmed to be infected with JEV. Two cases were confirmed to be infected with G1 JEV, 32 with G3 JEV, and two with G5 JEV. G3 was the primary infection genotype among JE cases with a definite infection genotype, and the infection caused by G5 JEV was confirmed serologically in China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Emerging pathogenic tick‐borne viruses (TBVs) have attracted a great deal of attention due to their significant impact on human and animal health. A novel orthonairovirus named Dadong virus (DDV) was isolated from Haemaphysalis concinna ticks in the Changbai Mountain region on the China–North Korea border. DDV can induce cytopathic effects in mammalian and human cell lines. Phylogenetic analysis showed that it belongs to the genus Orthonairovirus, family Nairoviridae, exhibiting 72.4%–81.3% nucleic acid identity to Tofla orthonairovirus, known to cause lethal infection in IFNAR KO mice. The first serological evidence of DDV circulating in cattle and mice was also obtained, with 4.0% (1/25) of cattle and 2.27% (1/44) of mice seropositive for DDV. Objective To establish a dual droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) assay for herpes simplex virus type I (HSV-1) and varicella-zoster virus (VZV). Methods The specific primers and probes were derived based on the conserved regions of HSV-1 and VZV genome. The primer-probe combinations were screened, and the annealing temperatures and primer-probe concentration ratios of the dual-droplet digital PCR reaction were optimized to establish a dual-droplet digital PCR reaction system for HSV-1 and VZV, which was tested for other viruses and validated for clinical samples. The sensitivity, specificity, and reproducibility of the established dual microtiter digital PCR method were analyzed. Results The optimal concentrations of primers and probes for the dual ddPCR detection method of HSV-I and VZV were determined to be 800 nmol/L and 250 nmol/L, respectively, with an optimal annealing temperature of 56 °C. The correlation coefficient (R2) of the standard curve of the dual ddPCR assay was 0.99, showing a clear linear relationship. The method showed high sensitivity, with the lowest detection limit of herpes simplex virus type I being 2.97 copies/μL, and for VZV being 2.73 copies/μL. The repeatability was high with a small coefficient of variation and stable detection results; the specificity was excellent, and no cross-reaction was found with herpes simplex virus type II, Epstein-Barr virus, Adenovirus, Coxsackievirus (CA6/CA10/CA16), Cytomegalovirus, Human Cytomegalovirus, Human enterovirus 71, Japanese Encephalitis virus, West Nile virus, Measles virus, Mumps virus, and human nucleic acids. Conclusions The dual droplet digital PCR assay for herpes simplex virus type I and varicellazoster virus established in this experiment has strong sensitivity, specificity, and high repeatability, and can provide a solution for rapid quantitative detection of the two viruses in different scenarios. With burgeoning economic development, a surging influx of greenhouse gases, notably carbon dioxide (CO2), has precipitated global warming, thus accentuating the critical imperatives of monitoring and predicting carbon emissions. Conventional approaches employed in the examination of carbon emissions predominantly rely on energy statistics procured from the National Bureau of Statistics and local statistical bureaus. However, these conventional data sources, often encapsulated in statistical yearbooks, exclusively furnish insights into energy consumption at the national and provincial levels, so the assessment at a more granular scale, such as the municipal and county levels, poses a formidable challenge. This study, using nighttime light data and statistics records spanning from 2000 to 2019, undertook a comparative analysis, scrutinizing various modeling methodologies, encompassing linear, exponential, and logarithmic models, with the aim of assessing carbon emissions across diverse spatial scales. A multifaceted analysis unfolded, delving into the key attributes of China's carbon emissions, spanning total carbon emissions, per capita carbon emissions, and carbon emission intensity. Spatial considerations were also paramount, encompassing an examination of carbon emissions across provincial, municipal, and county scales, as well as an intricate exploration of spatial patterns, including the displacement of the center of gravity and the application of trend analyses. These multifaceted analyses collectively contributed to the endeavor of predicting China's future carbon emission trajectory. The findings of the study revealed that at the national scale, total carbon emissions exhibited an annual increment throughout the period spanning 2000 to 2019. Secondly, upon an in-depth evaluation of model fitting, it was evident that the logarithmic model emerged as the most adept in terms of fitting, presenting a mean R2 value of 0.83. Thirdly, the gravity center of carbon emissions in China was situated within Henan Province, and there was a discernible overall shift towards the southwest. In 2025 and 2030, it is anticipated that the average quantum of China's carbon emissions will reach 7.82 × 102 million and 25.61 × 102 million metric tons, with Shandong Province emerging as the foremost contributor. In summary, this research serves as a robust factual underpinning and an indispensable reference point for advancing the scientific underpinnings of China's transition to a low-carbon economy and the judicious formulation of policies governing carbon emissions. In recent years, numerous viruses have been identified from ticks, and some have been linked to clinical cases of emerging tick-borne diseases. Chinese northeast frontier is tick infested. However, there is a notable lack of systematic monitoring efforts to assess the viral composition in the area, leaving the ecological landscape of viruses carried by ticks not clear enough. Between April and June 2017, 7101 ticks were collected to perform virus surveillance on the China–North Korea border, specifically in Tonghua, Baishan, and Yanbian. A total of 2127 Ixodes persulcatus were identified. Further investigation revealed the diversity of tick-borne viruses by transcriptome sequencing of Ixodes persulcatus. All ticks tested negative for tick-borne encephalitis virus. Transcriptome sequencing expanded 121 genomic sequence data of 12 different virus species from Ixodes persulcatus. Notably, a new segmented flavivirus, named Baishan Forest Tick Virus, were identified, closely related to Alongshan virus and Harz mountain virus. Therefore, this new virus may pose a potential threat to humans. Furthermore, the study revealed the existence of seven emerging tick-borne viruses dating back to 2017. These previously identified viruses included Mudanjiang phlebovirus, Onega tick phlebovirus, Sara tick phlebovirus, Yichun mivirus, and three unnamed viruses (one belonging to the Peribunyaviridae family and the other two belonging to the Phenuiviridae family). The existence of these emerging tick-borne viruses in tick samples collected in 2017 suggests that their history may extend further than previously recognized. This study provides invaluable insights into the virome of Ixodes persulcatus in the China–North Korea border region, enhancing our ongoing efforts to manage the risks associated with tick-borne viruses. This article presents ultrawide bandwidth (BW) and large-angle helical metamaterial absorbers (HMMAs) consisting of a periodic array of coaxially nested magnetic helices. The enhanced properties of these HMMAs, including ultrawide BW, polarization insensitivity, and wide-angle absorption, are confirmed and illustrated experimentally. Large helix diameter (20–30 mm), small coupling constant (close to 1), and small and large helix nesting (5 and 20 mm) help in the enhancement of the absorption properties. Current distributions and coupling property of these HMMAs are provided, and results reveal that the synergistic effect of the LC resonance and dipole responses of the patterned structure is responsible for the broadband absorption mechanism. HMMAs consisting of a 14 × 14 array of a triple-nested helix exhibit optimal performance. The effective BW with reflection loss below −10 dB (90% attenuation) is up to 27.68 GHz at 8–40 GHz. The HMMAs also show polarization insensitivity in the incident range of 0°–315° and angle insensitivity at all incident angles in the range of 35°–70°. Therefore, our findings here provide a valuable guide to the design and fabrication of chiral MMAs, in particular, the ultrawide BW and large-angle chiral MMAs at microwave or millimeter wave frequencies.
