Abstract

Epoxy resin (EP) has attracted considerable attention in packaging, electronic devices, aerospace, and coatings fields owing to its remarkable chemical and physical performance. However, the inherent flammable performance and unfavorable brittle nature seriously restricted its application in sophisticated industry. Herein, an efficient reactive 9,10‐dihydro‐9‐oxa‐10‐phosphaphenanthrene‐10‐oxide (DOPO)‐based flame retardant (DB‐DAD) was prepared by a facile "one‐pot" method. Due to their synergistic gas‐phase and solid‐phase flame‐retardant effects, DB‐DAD modified EP composites (EP/DB‐DAD composite) easily achieved UL‐94 V‐0 ratings, and an EP/DB‐DAD composite with a 0.32 wt% phosphorus content had an excellent (30.2%) limiting oxygen index. In addition, the amounts of heat and smoke decreased by 28.1% and 24.8%, respectively. Due to the introduction of long and flexible aliphatic chains, the EP/DB‐DAD composites exhibited satisfactory mechanical properties, the flexural and tensile toughness of EP/6% DB‐DAD were 82.5% and 62.2% higher than those of neat EP, respectively. Furthermore, EP/DB‐DAD composite showed good transparency (>85%) and favorable UV shielding performance. Abstract

Two new ent-atisanediterpenoids, ent-atisane-16β, 17-isopropylidenedioxy-19-ol-3-one (1) and ent-atisane-16β, 17-isopropylidenedioxy-11β, 18-dihydroxyl-3-one (2) were isolated from the whole plants of Euphorbia wallichii. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analyses.

45. Bioinspired Design of Strong, Tough, and Thermally Stable Polymeric Materials viaNanoconfinement

Abstract

The combination of high strength, great toughness, and high heat resistance for polymeric materials is a vital factor for their practical applications. Unfortunately, until now it has remained a major challenge to achieve this performance portfolio because the mechanisms of strength and toughness are mutually exclusive. In the natural world, spider silk features the combination of high strength, great toughness, and excellent thermal stability, which are governed by the nanoconfinement of hydrogen-bonded β-sheets. Here, we report a facile bioinspired methodology for fabricating advanced polymer composite films with a high tensile strength of 152.8 MPa, a high stiffness of 4.35 GPa, and a tensile toughness of 30.3 MJ/m3in addition to high thermal stability (69 °C higher than that of the polymer matrix) only by adding 2.0 wt % of artificial β-sheets. The mechanical and thermostable performance portfolio is superior to that of its counterparts developed to date because of the nanoconfinement and hydrogen-bond cross-linking effects of artificial β-sheets. Our study offers a facile biomimetic strategy for the design of integrated mechanically robust and thermostable polymer materials, which hold promise for many applications in electrical devices and tissue engineering fields.
