32. Tensile properties of high strength cast Mg alloys at room temperature: A review

Abstract

As most Mg alloy products are now produced by a casting process, the development of high strength cast Mg alloys can promote their further applications and has already become one of the hot research areas of Mg alloys. The present paper reviews the strengthening mechanisms, tensile properties and modification results of commercial high strength cast Mg alloys; as well as the development of Mg-Gd, Mg-Nd and Mg-Sn based alloys. It concludes that precipitation strengthening is the most important strengthening mechanism in high strength cast Mg alloys, which contributes more than 60% of yield strength in solution & peak-aged (T6) cast Mg alloys. For the yield strength, the alloys follow the sequence of Mg-Gd(Y)-Ag > Mg-Gd(Y)-Zn > Mg-Gd-Y/Sm/Nd > Mg-Y-Nd (WE series) > ZK61 > Mg-Nd > AZ91 > Mg-Sn. Mg-Gd(Y)-Ag based alloys are the strongest cast Mg alloys at present, followed by Mg-Gd(Y)-Zn based alloys. The high yield strengths of Mg-Gd(Y)-Ag and Mg-Gd(Y)-Zn cast alloys are due to the co-precipitation of basal and prismatic meta-stable phases.

Abstract

The microstructure and mechanical properties of gravity cast Mg–2.75Nd– x Zn–Zr ( x = 0, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 wt.%) and Mg– y Nd–0.2Zn–Zr ( y = 1.25, 1.75, 2.25, 2.75, 3.0, 3.25 wt.%) alloys in as-cast, solution-treated and 200 °C peak-aged conditions were investigated at room temperature. The effect of Zn and Nd addition on microstructure and mechanical properties in different thermal conditions were discussed in Mg–2.75Nd– x Zn–Zr alloys and Mg– y Nd–0.2Zn–Zr alloys, respectively. When Zn addition was 0.2 wt.% and Nd addition was 3.0 wt.%, the alloy revealed the best combination of strength and elongation and was chosen as optimal chemical composition.

Abstract

Microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast and different heat treated Mg–3Nd–0.2Zn–0.4Zr (wt.%) (NZ30K) alloys were investigated. The as-cast alloy was comprised of α magnesium matrix and Mg 12 Nd eutectic compounds. After solution treatment at 540 °C for 6 h, the eutectic compounds dissolved into the matrix and small Zr-containing particles precipitated at grain interiors. Further aging at low temperatures led to plate-shaped metastable precipitates, which strengthened the alloy. Peak-aged at 200 °C for 10–16 h, fine β″ particles with DO 19 structure was the dominant strengthening phase. The alloy had ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation of 300–305 MPa and 11%, respectively. Aged at 250 °C for 10 h, coarse β′ particles with fcc structure was the dominant strengthening phase. The alloy showed UTS and elongation of 265 MPa and 20%, respectively. Yield strengths (YS) of these two aged conditions were in the same level, about 140 MPa. Precipitation strengthening was the largest contributor (about 60%) to the strength in these two aged conditions. The hardness of aged NZ30K alloy seemed to correspond to UTS not YS.

Abstract

The microstructure, mechanical properties and fracture behavior of gravity die cast Mg–4Y–2Nd–1Gd–0.4Zr (wt.%) (WNG421) alloy are studied at room temperature in different thermal conditions, including as-cast, solution-treated and different aging-treated (both isothermal and two-step aging) conditions. The results indicate that WNG421 alloy shows different behaviors of crack initiation and propagation in different thermal conditions during tensile test at room temperature. After pre-aged at 200 °C for 5 h, the hardness of WNG421 alloy first reduces and then increases when secondary aged at 250 °C (two-step aging). The peak hardness and corresponding tensile strength of the two-step aged alloy both increases compared with those in 250 °C isothermal peak-aged condition. Tensile strength of WNG421 alloy at room temperature in low temperature (200 °C) isothermal peak-aged condition is much higher than that in high temperature (250 °C) isothermal peak-aged condition.
