Effects of hydraulic redistribution (HR) on hydrological, biogeochemical, and ecological processes have been demonstrated in the field, but the current generation of standard earth system models does not include a representation of HR. Though recent studies have examined the effect of incorporating HR into land surface models, few (if any) have done cross-site comparisons for contrasting climate regimes and multiple vegetation types via the integration of measurement and modeling. Here, we incorporated the HR scheme of Ryel et al. (2002) into the NCAR Community Land Model Version 4.5 (CLM4.5), and examined the ability of the resulting hybrid model to capture the magnitude of HR flux and/or soil moisture dynamics from which HR can be directly inferred, to assess the impact of HR on land surface water and energy budgets, and to explore how the impact may depend on climate regimes and vegetation conditions. Eight AmeriFlux sites with contrasting climate regimes and multiple vegetation types were studied, including the Wind River Crane site in Washington State, the Santa Rita Mesquite savanna site in southern Arizona, and six sites along the Southern California Climate Gradient. HR flux, evapotranspiration (ET), and soil moisture were properly simulated in the present study, even in the face of various uncertainties. Our cross-ecosystem comparison showed that the timing, magnitude, and direction (upward or downward) of HR vary across ecosystems, and incorporation of HR into CLM4.5 improved the modelmeasurement matches of evapotranspiration, Bowen ratio, and soil moisture particularly during dry seasons. Our results also reveal that HR has important hydrological impact in ecosystems that have a pronounced dry season but are not overall so dry that sparse vegetation and very low soil moisture limit HR.

Cropland ecosystems are significant emission sources of N2O, but a limited number of studies have focused on the impact of extreme weather events on N2O fluxes from cropland. This present study integrated field observations and model simulations to explore the responses of N2O fluxes to extreme weather events in typical rice and wheat rotation croplands in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River (MLRYR) in China. The findings revealed that the studied rice-wheat rotation cropland exhibited a net source of N2O over the three-year monitoring period, with annual cumulative N2O emissions ranging from 190.4 to 261.8 mg N m−2. N2O emissions during the rice and wheat growing seasons accounted for 29% and 71% of the total yearly emissions, respectively. Extreme heat events led to a 23% to 32% increase in observed N2O emissions from cropland. Observed N2O emissions from irrigated rice fields during extreme precipitation events were 45% lower than those during extreme drought events. In contrast, extreme precipitation events raised observed N2O emissions from rain-fed wheat fields by 36% compared to the multi-year average, while extreme drought events reduced N2O emissions from wheat fields by 20%. Regional simulations indicated that annual cumulative N2O emissions from croplands in the MLRYR are projected to increase from 207.8 mg N m−2 under current climate to 303.4 mg N m−2 in the future. Given the episodic nature and uncertainties associated with N2O emissions from cropland, further validation is necessary for utilizing the model to explore the effects of extreme weather events on N2O in cropland ecosystems. Lakes are important surface water bodies, and ongoing climate change is a growing threat to the hydrological cycle and water resource availability of lakes in arid regions. Accurately estimating different drivers' contributions to lake water volume can enhance our understanding of lake variations in arid regions. In this study, we combined the land surface model and hydrological model, as well as statistical methods, to analyze the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of lake area changes and the factors affecting these changes during the past decades in Bosten Lake, Ulungur Lake, Ebinur Lake, and Sayram Lake, which are located in a typical dry region in China. The study revealed that the average amounts of river inflow, TWVF, lake ice sublimation, lake surface precipitation, and river outflow in the four lakes were 17.41 × 108 m3 yr−1, 6.60 × 108 m3 yr−1, 0.41 × 108 m3 yr−1, 0.98 × 108 m3 yr−1, and 9.12 × 108 m3 yr−1, respectively. We found that river inflow is the dominant factor affecting changes in open lake areas, while lake surface precipitation is the main factor affecting changes in closed lake areas. Long-term continuous monitoring of precipitation isotopes has great potential to advance our understanding of hydrometeorological processes that determine stable isotope variability in the monsoon regions. This study presents 4-yr daily precipitation isotopes from Yungui Plateau in southwestern China that are influenced by Indian summer monsoon and East Asian monsoon. The local meteoric water line (LMWL; δ2H = 8.12δ18O + 11.2) was first established at the Tengchong (TC) site, which was close to the global meteoric water line (GMWL; δ2H = 8δ18O + 10), indicating little secondary subcloud evaporation in the falling rain. Precipitation δ18O values exhibited significant inverse relationships with precipitation amount (r = −0.42), air temperature (r = −0.43), and relative humidity (r = −0.41) with lower correlation coefficients throughout the entire period, which indicated that precipitation isotopic variability in TC could not be well explained by the local meteorological factors but influenced by other combined factors of regional precipitation amount and upstream rainout. Precipitation δ18O values showed a clear V-shaped trend throughout the observation period, characterized by higher δ18O values during the premonsoon period whereas lower values during the postmonsoon period. This seasonal variation of precipitation δ18O values was associated with the seasonal movement of the intertropical convergence zone and seasonal changes in moisture transport. Combined with backward trajectory analysis, precipitation δ18O values were estimated by a Rayleigh distillation model showing that upstream rainout processes from the Bay of Bengal (BoB) toward land (Myanmar) and recycling moisture over land were key factors affecting the isotopic compositions of the TC precipitation. These findings could enhance our understanding of atmospheric dynamics and moisture source in the monsoon regions and will potentially facilitate the interpretation of numerous isotopic proxy records from this region. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: The variability of the summer monsoon and its onset, duration, and failure directly determine the strong rainfall and drought in a given region and have great impacts on regional societies and agriculture. To better understand this variability, this study presented a 4-yr daily dataset of precipitation isotopes on the Yungui Plateau of southwestern China to explore atmospheric processes and moisture sources that drive isotopic variability in this region. Precipitation δ18O exhibited remarkably seasonal variability, with higher values in premonsoon period and lower values in the postmonsoon period. During the Indian summer monsoon period, moisture sources primarily originated from the BoB toward the TC site, experiencing rainout processes and local moisture recycling over land using a Rayleigh fractionation model.
