Despite its amazing quantitative successes and contributions to revolutionary technologies, physics currently faces many unsolved mysteries ranging from the meaning of quantum mechanics to the nature of the dark energy that will determine the future of the Universe. It is clearly prohibitive for the general reader, and even the best informed physicists, to follow the vast number of technical papers published in the thousands of specialized journals. For this reason, we have asked the leading experts across many of the most important areas of physics to summarise their global assessment of some of the most important issues. In lieu of an extremely long abstract summarising the contents, we invite the reader to look at the section headings and their authors, and then to indulge in a feast of stimulating topics spanning the current frontiers of fundamental physics from The Future of Physics by William D Phillips and What characterises topological effects in physics? by Gerard t Hooft through the contributions of the widest imaginable range of world leaders in their respective areas. Spatial image quality metrics designed for camera systems generally employ the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF), the Noise Power Spectrum (NPS), and a visual contrast detection model. Prior art indicates that scene-dependent characteristics of non-linear, content-aware image processing are unaccounted for by MTFs and NPSs measured using traditional methods. We present two novel metrics: the log Noise Equivalent Quanta (log NEQ) and Visual log NEQ. They both employ scene-and-process-dependent MTF (SPD-MTF) and NPS (SPD-NPS) measures, which account for signal-transfer and noise scene-dependency, respectively. We also investigate implementing contrast detection and discrimination models that account for scene-dependent visual masking. Also, three leading camera metrics are revised that use the above scene-dependent measures. All metrics are validated by examining correlations with the perceived quality of images produced by simulated camera pipelines. Metric accuracy improved consistently when the SPD-MTFs and SPD-NPSs were implemented. The novel metrics outperformed existing metrics of the same genre.

The Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) and the Noise Power Spectrum (NPS) characterize imaging system sharpness/resolution and noise, respectively. Both measures are based on linear system theory but are applied routinely to systems employing non-linear, content-aware image processing. For such systems, MTFs/NPSs are derived inaccurately from traditional test charts containing edges, sinusoids, noise or uniform tone signals, which are unrepresentative of natural scene signals. The dead leaves test chart delivers improved measurements, but still has limitations when describing the performance of scene-dependent systems. In this paper, we validate several novel scene-and-process-dependent MTF (SPD-MTF) and NPS (SPD-NPS) measures that characterize, either: i) system performance concerning one scene, or ii) average real-world performance concerning many scenes, or iii) the level of system scene-dependency. We also derive novel SPD-NPS and SPD-MTF measures using the dead leaves chart. We demonstrate that all the proposed measures are robust and preferable for scene-dependent systems than current measures.

Purpose To determine the influence on the contrast sensitivity when the stimulus contains a fixation target in two retinal locations, foveal and parafoveal. Methods Four young adults with 0.0 logMar acuity participated in this study. The stimulus was based on vertical sinusoidal gratings masked by a circular (for foveal area) or a ring (for parafoveal area). To increase the luminance resolution of the display a bit-stealing technique was used. Four different sets of stimuli were generated, two for exploring the foveal sensitivity and two for the parafoveal area. The difference between the sets designed for the same area was the presence, or absence, of a fixation target (a white cross) in the centre of the stimulus. A modified staircase method was implemented. Results The results show a drop in the contrast sensitivity when the fixation target was present on the stimulus for frequencies smaller than 4 cycles per degree. Conclusions The presence of fixation targets diminishes the contrast sensitivity for low to mid frequencies over different concentric areas of the retina. This could be due to the fixational eye movements, different patterns of eye movements were found using an eye tracker. The relationship between the sensitivity in the foveal area and the parafoveal agrees with those reported by other authors using different designs confirming that the new stimulus design is suitable to measure the contrast sensitivity outside the foveal area., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

We consider a gedanken experiment with a beam of atoms in their ground state that are accelerated through a single-mode microwave cavity. We show that taking into account of the ''counter-rotating'' terms in the interaction Hamiltonian leads to the excitation of an atom with simultaneous emission of a photon into a field mode. In the case of a slow switching on of the interaction, the ratio of emission and absorption probabilities is exponentially small and is described by the Unruh factor. In the opposite case of sharp cavity boundaries the above ratio is much greater and radiation is produced with an intensity which can exceed the intensity of Unruh acceleration radiation in free space by many orders of magnitude. In both cases real photons are produced, contrary to the opinion that a uniformly accelerated atom does not radiate. The cavity field at steady state is described by a thermal density matrix. However, under some conditions laser gain is possible. We present a detailed discussion of how the acceleration of atoms affects the generated cavity field in different situations, progressing from a simple physical picture of Unruh radiation to more complicated situations., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

When ground state atoms are accelerated through a high Q microwave cavity, radiation is produced with an intensity which can exceed the intensity of Unruh acceleration radiation in free space by many orders of magnitude. The cavity field at steady state is described by a thermal density matrix under most conditions. However, under some conditions gain is possible, and when the atoms are injected in a regular fashion, the radiation can be produced in a squeezed state.

We report the observation of small group velocities of order 90 meters per second, and large group delays of greater than 0.26 ms, in an optically dense hot rubidium gas (~360 K). Media of this kind yield strong nonlinear interactions between very weak optical fields, and very sharp spectral features. The result is in agreement with previous studies on nonlinear spectroscopy of dense coherent media.
