3. Endocrine and behavioural plasticity in vertebrates

Abstract

Endocrine plasticity is the reversible change in endocrine traits in response to unpredicted changes in an animals' physical and social environment. Inter-individual differences in how individuals' endocrine traits vary can occur as a result of differences in how individuals' hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal/interrenal (HPA/I axis) respond to stressors. However, it remains unknown if and how the variation in individuals' baseline stress hormones (measured by glucocorticoids) can predict stress-induced plasticity. In this thesis, I aim to gain a more in-depth understanding of variation in endocrine plasticity over a range of physical and social environmental changes across different vertebrate systems, and the potential factors (behavioural and morphological) driving it. First, I review the literature on between-individual variation in endocrine plasticity to better understand why and how plasticity occurs (Chapter 1) and provide an overview of my methods and study systems (Chapter 2). Second, I investigate the effects of familiarity and recent social context on cortisol responses (Chapter 3) and behavioural responses (Chapter 4) in three-spined stickleback fish (Gasterosteus aculeatus). Third I investigate endocrine plasticity in humans (Homo sapiens) and potential links to BIG 5 personality measures in a social task (Chapter 5). Fourth, I investigate long-term plasticity in Welsh mountain ewes (Ovis aries) in response to changing food availability (Chapter 6). Across these three different study systems I find i) endocrine repeatability, which can be considered equivalent to personality traits, ii) evidence for endocrine plasticity and between-individual differences in plasticity, and iii) links between endocrine repeatability and plasticity to between variations behavioural/morphological traits. In the final chapter (Chapter 7) I discuss how these findings advance our understanding of how individuals respond and adapt to environmental challenges.

Abstract

Navarro has conjectured a necessary and sufficient condition for a finite group $G$ to have a self-normalising Sylow $2$-subgroup, which is given in terms of the ordinary irreducible characters of $G$. The first-named author has reduced the proof of this conjecture to showing that certain related statements hold when $G$ is quasisimple. We classify all real and strongly real classes of the finite special unitary group $SU_n(q)$. Unless $q \equiv 3 (mod 4)$ and $n |4$, the classification of real classes is similar to that of the finite special linear group $SL_n(q)$. We relate strong reality in $SU_n(q)$ to strong reality in the finite special orthogonal groups $SO^\pm_n(q)$, and we classify real and strongly real classes in the last case for the group $SO^\pm_n(q)$, when q is odd and $n \equiv 2 (mod 4)$., Comment: 19 pages

Abstract

Let $G$ be a finite group and $d$ the degree of a complex irreducible character of $G$, then write $|G|=d(d+e)$ where $e$ is a nonnegative integer. We prove that $|G|\leq e^4-e^3$ whenever $e>1$. This bound is best possible and improves on several earlier related results.

Abstract

The so-called "local-global" conjectures in the representation theory of finite groups relate the representation theory of $G$ to that of certain proper subgroups, such as the normalizers of particular $p$-groups. Recent results by several authors reduce some of these conjectures to showing that a certain collection of stronger conditions holds for all finite simple groups. Here, we show that $G=Sp_6(2^a)$ is "good" for these reductions for the McKay conjecture, the Alperin weight conjecture, and their blockwise versions.

We classify all pairs $(V,H)$, where $H$ is a proper subgroup of $G=Sp_6(q)$, $q$ even, and $V$ is an $\ell$-modular representation of $G$ for $\ell\neq 2$ which is absolutely irreducible as a representation of $H$. This problem is motivated by the Aschbacher-Scott program on classifying maximal subgroups of finite classical groups.

10. Students' Perceptions of and Responses to Teaching Assistant and Peer Feedback

Abstract

Authentic open-ended problems are increasingly appearing in university classrooms at all levels. Formative feedback that leads to learning and improved student work products is a challenge, particularly in large enrollment courses. This is a case study of one first-year engineering student team's experience with teaching assistant and peer feedback during a series of open-ended mathematical modeling problems called Model-Eliciting Activities. The goal of this study was to gain deep insight into the interactions between students, feedback providers, and written feedback by examining one team's perceptions of the feedback they received and the changes they made to their solutions based on their feedback. The practical purpose of this work is to begin to make recommendations to improve students' interactions with written feedback. The data sources consisted of individual student interviews, videos of the team's meetings to revise their solutions, the team's iteratively-developed solutions, the team's documented changes to the their solutions, and the written feedback they received from their teaching assistant and peers. The students explained that helpful peer feedback requires a time commitment, focuses on the mathematical model, and goes beyond praise to prompt change. The students also stated that generic TA feedback was not helpful. The greatest difference between the students' perceptions of TA and peer feedback was that the TA had influence over the team's grade and therefore the TA feedback was deemed more important. Feedback strategies to increase peer participation and improve teaching assistant training are described. Suggestions for continued research on feedback are provided.

Abstract

The Alperin-McKay conjecture relates height zero characters of an $\ell$-block with the ones of its Brauer correspondent. This conjecture has been reduced to the so-called inductive Alperin-McKay conditions about quasi-simple groups by the third author. Those conditions are still open for groups of Lie type. The present paper describes characters of height zero in $\ell$-blocks of groups of Lie type over a field with $q$ elements when $\ell$ divides $q-1$. We also give information about $\ell$-blocks and Brauer correspondents. As an application we show that quasi-simple groups of type $C$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ satisfy the inductive Alperin-McKay conditions for primes $\ell\geq 5$ and dividing $q-1$. Some methods to that end are adapted from the work of Malle--Sp\"ath.

33. Irreducible Representations of Finite Groups of Lie Type: On the Irreducible Restriction Problem and Some Local-Global Conjectures

Abstract

In this thesis, we investigate various problems in the representation theory of finite groups of Lie type. In Chapter 2, we hope to make sense of the last statement - we will introduce some background and notation that will be useful for the remainder of the thesis. In Chapter 3, we find bounds for the largest irreducible representation degree of a finite unitary group. In Chapter 4, we describe the block distribution and Brauer characters in cross characteristic for Sp₆(2ᵃ) in terms of the irreducible ordinary characters. This will be useful in Chapter 5 and Chapter 7, which focus primarily on the group Sp₆(2ᵃ) and contain the main results of this thesis, which we now summarize. Given a subgroup H ≤ G and a representation V for G, we obtain the restriction V|H of V to H by viewing V as an FH-module. However, even if V is an irreducible representation of G, the restriction V|H may (and usually does) fail to remain irreducible as a representation of H. In Chapter 5, we classify all pairs (V, H), where H is a proper subgroup of G = Sp₆(q) or Sp₄(q) with q even, and V is an l-modular representation of G for l ≠ 2 which is absolutely irreducible as a representation of H. This problem is motivated by the Aschbacher-Scott program on classifying maximal subgroups of finite classical groups. The local-global philosophy plays an important role in many areas of mathematics. In the representation theory of finite groups, the so-called "local-global" conjectures would relate the representation theory of G to that of certain proper subgroups, such as the normalizer of a Sylow subgroup. One might hope that these conjectures could be proven by showing that they are true for all simple groups. Though this turns out not quite to be the case, some of these conjectures have been reduced to showing that a finite set of stronger conditions hold for all finite simple groups. In Chapter 7, we show that Sp₆(q) and Sp₄(q), q even, are "good" for these reductions.

Abstract

The article focuses on the influenza A (H3N2)v virus that infected twelve persons in the U.S. in 2011, mostly children below 10 years. Data show that children in this age bracket had few or no cross-reactive antibodies to A (H3N2)v virus, but there were cross-reactive antibodies to the virus in some older children and adults. While vaccination with the 2010-11 seasonal influenza vaccine did not affect cross-reactive antibody levels in children below 3 years, but it increased those in adults.
