The CG-2 beamline at the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) exhibits a notable discrepancy between observed count rates and the count rates we would expect based on a Monte-Carlo neutron ray-trace simulation. These simulations consistently predict count rates approximately five times greater than those observed in four separate experimental runs involving different instrument configurations. This discrepancy suggests that certain factors are causing losses in measurements that are not adequately accounted for in the simulation, in particular guide reflectivity or misalignment. To investigate these discrepancies, a high-dimensional simulation parameter approach is applied in order to understand the losses. Region of Interest (ROI) groups along the instrument are assigned to different surfaces of the guide components within the simulation. This allows the parameters of those guide components to be varied as a group to minimize the complexity of the search space. The result is an optimization of simulation parameters using an iterative scheme that aims to minimize the difference between experimentally measured count rates and simulated count rates across all tested collimator combinations. This proposed methodology holds the potential to reveal previously unrecognized sources of intensity loss in the CG-2 beamline at HFIR and improve the accuracy of simulations, leading to enhanced understanding and performance of the beamline for various scientific applications., Comment: 14 pages, 19 figures

Conversions between neutrons $n$ and Dark Matter candidate sterile neutrons $n'$ have been proposed as a mechanism for Baryon Number $\mathcal{B}$ violation. In the case that there is a small mass difference $\Delta{m}$ between the $n$ and the $n'$ states, oscillations can be induced by compensating for $\Delta{m}$ with a magnetic field. A search for such neutron oscillations was performed at the Spallation Neutron Source by looking for anomalous neutron transmission through a strongly absorbing cadmium wafer inside of a $6.6$~T magnet. The approach described here saw no regenerated neutrons above background, which provides an improved limit for neutron - sterile neutrons transformations for a range of $\Delta{m}$ between $0.1$~neV and $1000$~neV., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that if the transformation of a neutron to a mirror neutron exists with an oscillation time of the order of ten seconds, it can be detected in a rather simple disappearance and/or regeneration type experiment with an intense beam of cold neutrons. In the presence of a conjectural mirror magnetic field of unknown magnitude and direction, the resonance transformation conditions can be found by scanning the magnitude of the ordinary magnetic field in the range e.g. $\pm 100 \mu$T. Magnetic field is assumed to be uniform along the path of neutron beam. The Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover includes an innovative Sample Caching Subsystem (SCS). Two key features of SCS are the ability to collect and process rock and regolith samples for possible future return to Earth and the ability to switch between different types of drill bits for coring rocks, abrading rocks, and collecting regolith. These capabilities are enabled by a Corer mounted on the end of a Robotic Arm and a Bit Carousel mounted on the front of the rover body. Beneath the Bit Carousel, a smaller Sample Handling Arm can insert and remove sample tubes from sampling bits in the carousel. For the Corer to interface with the Bit Carousel so that it can exchange drill bits and hand off rock samples, the Robotic Arm must maneuver the Corer to dock with the Bit Carousel. Docking serves two primary purposes: it precisely aligns the Corer with the hardware inside the Bit Carousel, and it applies enough preload between the Corer and the Bit Carousel to make them stay aligned through the process of bit exchange.The docking assembly consists of four concave alignment cones mounted on a large rotating ring, through the center of which the drill can exchange bits and samples with the Bit Carousel. The coring drill includes four alignment posts which mate with the four cones on the dock. Docking uses an algorithm we call “Force-Corrected Docking”, which means it iteratively reads the force/moments reported by the FTS, performs a small motion to reduce sideload and moments while increasing preload, and repeats until reaching a deadband around the target preload. Because docking is a critical function for SCS, the dock hardware and algorithm have been tested thousands of times over 7 years in various stages of development. The culmination of this work is a reliable docking system which has been demonstrated and used in flight.
