Abstract

The multi-staged XENON program at INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso aims to detect dark matter with two-phase liquid xenon time projection chambers of increasing size and sensitivity. The XENONnT experiment is the latest detector in the program, planned to be an upgrade of its predecessor XENON1T. It features an active target of 5.9 tonnes of cryogenic liquid xenon (8.5 tonnes total mass in cryostat). The experiment is expected to extend the sensitivity to WIMP dark matter by more than an order of magnitude compared to XENON1T, thanks to the larger active mass and the significantly reduced background, improved by novel systems such as a radon removal plant and a neutron veto. Abstract

The XENON1T experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) is the first WIMP dark matter detector operating with a liquid xenon target mass above the ton-scale. Out of its 3.2t liquid xenon inventory, 2.0t constitute the active target of the dual-phase time projection chamber. The scintillation and ionization signals from particle interactions are detected with low-background photomultipliers. This article describes the XENON1T instrument and its subsystems as well as strategies to achieve an unprecedented low background level. First results on the detector response and the performance of the subsystems are also presented., Comment: 22 pages, 25 figures

Abstract

The ATLAS Tile hadronic calorimeter (TileCal) provides highly-segmented energy measurements of incoming particles. The information from TileCal's last segmentation layer can assist in muon tagging and it is being considered for a near future upgrade of the level-one trigger, mainly for rejecting triggers due to cavern background at the barrel region. A muon receiver for the TileCal muon signals is being designed in order to interface with the ATLAS level-one trigger. This paper addresses the preliminary studies concerning the muon discrimination capability for the muon receiver. Monte Carlo simulations for single muons from the interaction point were used to study the effectiveness of hadronic calorimeter information on muon detection.

Abstract

Frontier is a distributed database access system, including data caching, that was developed originally for the CMS experiment. This system has been in production for CMS for some time, providing world-wide access to the experiment's conditions data for all user jobs. The ATLAS experiment, which has had similar problems with global data distribution, investigated the use of the system for ATLAS jobs. After months of trials and verification, ATLAS put the Frontier system into production late in 2009. Frontier now supplies database access for ATLAS jobs at over 50 computing sites. This successful deployment of Frontier in ATLAS will be described, along with the scope of the system and necessary resources.

32. Correlation between radionuclides uptake and ultrastructural features of tight junctions in the capillary wall of meningiomas.

Abstract

The uptake of Tc-99m pertechnetate and Co-57 bleomycin and the ultrastructure of small blood vessels were studied in 10 cases of meningioma. When thin sections of 120 contact areas between adjacent endothelial cells were examined, 92% of the intercellular contacts contained one to three punctate tight junctions. Freeze fracture preparations revealed fascia occludens with one to four sealing strands. These findings are consistent with the high permeability the meningiomas displayed for both of the radiopharmaceuticals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

33. Ultrastructural basis for different pertechnetate uptake patterns by various human brain tumours.

Abstract

Patterns of pertechnetate uptake were correlated with ultrastructural properties of the endothelial wall in 14 human brain tumours. In tumours with reduced uptake of the radionuclide, intercellular tight junctions were observed whereas absence of intercellular tight junctions was characteristic of all tumours with an increased uptake of pertechnetate. In some tumours with increased uptake, fenestrated endothelial wall was seen while in others non-fenestrated wall was evident. We concluded that intercellular junctions and not fenestrations affect the permeability of brain tumours to pertechnetate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

34. Scintigraphic assessment of vascularity and blood-tissue barrier of human brain tumours.

Abstract

Assessment of vascularity and blood-tissue barrier was performed by sequential scintigraphy in 43 patients with brain tumours. The blood-tumour barrier was evaluated by use of 99mTc-pertechnetate, and vascularity using 99mTc-labelled red blood cells. Three groups of tumours were found: tumours with low vascularity and permeable barrier, tumours with high vascularity and permeable barrier, and tumours with low vascularity and relatively impermeable barrier. The first group indicates that when vessels are permeable, there may be a rapid penetration of large amounts of pertechnetate into the tumour even when vascularity is not increased. In the other two groups penetration of pertechnetate into the tumour is affected by vascularity, as it determines the total area where passage of the radiopharmaceutical takes place. It is suggested that the permeability of the blood-tumour barrier and the amount of vascularity may have an effect on the success of chemotherapy in brain tumours. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The diagnosis of leptomeningeal cysts by isotope cisternography is described in four cases. The cysts are visualized as abnormal local collections of the radiopharmaceutical, best demonstrated 48 hours after lumbar injection. The investigation makes it possible to diagnose the cyst at an early stage, before severe clinical symptoms and changes in the bones of the skull develop. Abstract

The diagnosis of porencephaly by isotope cisternography is described. In the three cases presented, porencephaly was associated with non-resorptive hydrocephalus. The communicating hydrocephalus caused the isotope to enter the ventricular system and visualize the cyst, and the diagnosis of both disorders was established by RIHSA cisternography. Abstract

A method for a combined air and isotope ventriculography is described. Twenty-nine infants with suspected hydrocephalus were studied. The merit of the combined study is the possibility of obtaining both anatomical and functional information. A very small amount of radioactivity—15 μc—was found to give satisfactory results. Patterns of cerebrospinal fluid flow in communicating and non-communicating hydrocephalus and in cases of porencephalic cyst and complete obstruction of the lateral ventricles are described. 42. The continuing clinical role of gallium 67 scintigraphy in the age of receptor imaging

Abstract

Gallium 67 scintigraphy is useful clinically for assessment of tumor viability after treatment of Hodgkin's and nonHodgkin's lymphoma. Because more than 50% of the patients with complete response have a residual mass after treatment, computed tomography is not a good test to determine if a patient has reached a complete response. ^6^7Ga scintigraphy, on the other hand, has a sensitivity of 76% to 100% and specificity of 75% to 96% to determine if a residual mass is a residual cancer or made up only of fibrosis and necrosis. Early diagnosis of recurrence is important in order to start therapy when the tumor can, potentially, still be controlled. The sensitivity of ^6^7Ga for diagnosis of recurrence is 95% and the specificity 89%. Scintigraphy has been shown to diagnose recurrence sometimes months before other tests. ^6^7Ga scintigraphy also has the potential to separate rapid from slow responders during therapy. Even when it has been known for many years, ^6^7Ga has proved recently to be a useful test in assessing lymphoma patients after treatment.

Abstract

Whole-body scintigraphy with 99Tcm-labelled red blood cells was performed in eight patients with hydatid disease. There was good correlation between these studies and other diagnostic procedures which included radiocolloid liver scintigraphy, liver ultrasound, body computed tomography and chest radiography. Whole-body scintigraphy with 99Tcm-labelled red blood cells appears suitable for screening patients with hydatid disease, many of whom have multiple organ involvement.

44. The role of Ga-67 scintigraphy in evaluating the results of therapy of lymphoma patients

Abstract

Gallium-67 scintigraphy using high-dose, modern equipment, and SPECT plays an important role in the evaluation of patients with lymphoma after treatment. Being a viability agent, taken up by lymphomatous, but not by necrotic or fibrotic tissue, it is used to assess the nature of a residual mass after treatment. Gallium also predicts disease-free survival and overall survival after treatment. It is used with high sensitivity and specificity for diagnosis of recurrence after a continuous clinical remission, which is achieved after successful treatment. A potential use for Gallium is in early evaluation, during treatment, of the rapidity of response. This evaluation determines early the effectiveness of therapy in the individual patient. After treatment Ga-67 scintigraphy appears to be superior to computed tomography and probably magnetic resonance imaging. It is used routinely in the management of patients with lymphoma.

Abstract

Purpose: We determined the level of functional damage to the kidney which inhibits further growth. Materials and Methods: Renal functional volume and percent uptake of 34 kidneys with reflux were studied by performing sequential quantitative single photon emission computerized tomography 2 times at a mean interval of 3.2 years. Results: Change in volume between the initial and repeat studies was 27.2 plus/minus 28.4 percent in all 34 kidneys. Change in volume was less than 7 percent in 8 kidneys and greater than 14 percent in 26. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis indicated that 15.6 percent kidney uptake was associated with 75 percent sensitivity, 100 percent specificity and 94 percent accuracy in distinguishing kidneys with more than 7 percent from those with less than 7 percent change in volume. The value of kidney uptake of less than 15.6 percent was 100 percent in predicting less than 7 percent change in volume (positive predictive value) and the value of kidney uptake greater than 15.6 percent was 93 percent in predicting more than 7 percent change in volume (negative predictive value). Conclusions: Kidney uptake of less than 15.6 percent represents irreversible impairment of renal growth and indicates permanent damage in kidneys with vesicoureteral reflux.
