Abstract

Based on the companion paper results, this paper presents a robust tuning method to tune a proportional integral (PI) controller that fulfills the design requirements for a single pool with different hydraulic conditions. The robust PI controller parameters are obtained analytically as a function of the physical parameters of the canal pool. Important implementation issues are also considered. Rules are provided for the sampling time selection in order to recover the continuous-time performance. When the sampling time is imposed, it has to be included in the controller design, by modifying the delay of the system. A simple way is proposed to take account of the gate opening as control action variable, instead of the upstream discharge. This robust PI tuning method is evaluated by simulation on a full nonlinear model of two different canal pools for different flow conditions and different implementations: continuous-time control, discrete-time control, using the discharge or the gate opening as control action variable. 4. Tuning of robust distant downstream PI controllers for an irrigation canal pool. I: theory

Abstract

The paper proposes a new method to tune robust distant downstream proportional integral (PI) controllers for an irrigation canal pool. The method emphasizes the role of gain and phase margins in the controller design, by linking the selection of these robustness indicators to the time domain specifications. This leads to link the frequency domain approach used by automatic control engineers to the time domain approach used by hydraulic engineers. The maximum error corresponding to an unpredicted perturbation is shown to be directly linked to the gain margin and the settling time to the phase margin of the controlled system. The tuning method gives analytical expressions for the controller parameters as function of physical parameters of the canal pool in order to satisfy desired performance requirements. The model is first expressed in terms of dimensionless variables, in order to get generic tuning formulas. The dimensionless PI coefficients are then expressed as functions of time-domain performance requirements. The PI tuning method is evaluated by simulation on a full nonlinear model for a canal pool taken from the ASCE test cases. 5. Simplified modeling of irrigation canals for controller design

Abstract

The integrator delay zero (IDZ) model presented by Litrico and Fromion is a simple way to model a canal for control purposes that extends the classical integrator delay model. This analytical model gives a very good frequency domain approximation of the Saint-Venant transfer matrix for a pool possibly in backwater conditions. The present paper shows how this model can be used to model an irrigation canal for control design. The IDZ model is analyzed and its accuracy evaluated in the frequency and time domain on two ASCE test canals for high and low flow conditions. Abstract

Outside In Acquisition and analysis of large data sets promises to move us toward a greater understanding of the mechanisms by which biological systems are dynamically regulated to respond to external cues. Now, two papers explore the responses of a bacterium to changing nutritional conditions (see the Perspective by Chalancon et al. ). Nicolas et al. (p. 1103 ) measured transcriptional regulation for more than 100 different conditions. Greater amounts of antisense RNA were generated than expected and appeared to be produced by alternative RNA polymerase targeting subunits called sigma factors. One transition, from malate to glucose as the primary nutrient, was studied in more detail by Buescher et al. (p. 1099 ) who monitored RNA abundance, promoter activity in live cells, protein abundance, and absolute concentrations of intracellular and extracellular metabolites. In this case, the bacteria responded rapidly and largely without transcriptional changes to life on malate, but only slowly adapted to use glucose, a shift that required changes in nearly half the transcription network. These data offer an initial understanding of why certain regulatory strategies may be favored during evolution of dynamic control systems.

International audience; In this work we give technical conditions which guarantee the global attractivity of bacterial linear metabolic pathways (reversible and irreversible structures) where both genetic and enzymatic controls involve the end product through metabolic effectors. To reach this goal, we use the negative feedback theorem of the monotone control systems theory, and we represent all conditions needed to apply the negative feedback theorem to the bacterial linear metabolic pathways in convenient deduced forms.

Abstract

[Departement_IRSTEA]RE [TR1_IRSTEA]GES / TRANSCAN; This paper presents a method to design efficient automatic controllers for an irrigation canal pool, that realize a compromise between the water resource management and the performance in terms of rejecting unmeasured perturbations. This mixed controller design is casted into the H-infinity optimization framework, and experimentally tested on a real canal located in Portugal. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the method. We also interpret classical control politics for an irrigation canal (local upstream and distant downstream control) using automatic control tools, and show that our method enables to combine both classical politics, keeping the distant downstream control water management while recovering the local upstream control real-time performance with respect to the user.

Abstract

In this paper, we consider the analysis of systems with parametric uncertainties. Due to the intrinsic complexity of this problem, the proposed efficient analysis methods are based on sufficient thus possibly conservative conditions. A popular one, in the μ and in the quadratic constraint approaches, involves the use of D and G scalings. In this paper, we reveal how to reduce the conservatism of the D-G scaling analysis while considering more general structures of parametric uncertainties and keeping numerical efficiency. Abstract

This paper considers the output-feedback performance control of a large class of uncertain linear time-delay systems, that is, systems where (time varying) dynamical and parameter uncertainties are explicitly modeled. For a controller with a given structure, we propose design methods based on both time-delay independent and time-delay dependent conditions. Depending on the selected controller structure, these conditions can be either convex or non-convex. All the conditions are directly derived from a general result.
