Increasing the proportion of unmanaged forests in multi-functional forest landscapes is a primary goal of international and national conservation strategies aiming at restoring natural properties in structurally simplified forests. However, the development of structural features and associated habitat suitability for forest species is largely unknown and even controversially discussed, as the development of newly established reserves is unidirectional and passes through dense maturation stages. This may negatively affect open forest species in the first phase after reserve designation. We evaluated the effects of management cessation on key habitat characteristics of four mountain forest bird species indicative of different structural components: Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus), Hazel grouse (Bonasa bonasia), Three-toed woodpecker (Picoides tridactylus) and Pygmy owl (Glaucidium passerinum) across four mountain regions in Central Europe. Habitat suitability was modelled based on 300 forest sites selected independently of their management status, and predicted to an independent dataset of 42 strictly protected forest reserves in the same regions. We then compared forest reserves to managed forests with species presence or absence with regard to habitat suitability and key habitat structures and related both to the time since reserve designation. For all model species, except Pygmy owl, habitat suitability in forest reserves was significantly higher than in managed forests with species’ absence, but not different from managed forests with species presence. For the species associated with open forest structures (Capercaillie, Hazel grouse, Pygmy owl) habitat suitability was significantly related to the “reserve age”: reserves in the first three decades after management cessation showed a significant decrease in suitability, which increased afterwards up to the maximally recorded time of 100 years. No such correlation was found for the Three-toed woodpecker associated with deadwood and barkbeetle infestations following temporally unpredictable disturbance events. Structural characteristics varied greatly in abundance and distribution, with open structures being related to the time since reserve designation. We therefore recommend focusing on mature, near-natural and structurally diverse forests when designating new strict forest reserves.

Acoustic sampling of bats is increasingly used to collect data on species occurrence for monitoring and conservation purposes. However acoustic sampling schemes are prone to be biased and inefficient if they are not planned and conducted according to scientific standards. Here we used two open source software tools (PRESENCE and GENPRES) to develop and evaluate an effective acoustic sampling of bats. Based on the acoustic data from the revision of the Swiss Red List of endangered bats we used PRESENCE to calculate the occupancy and detection probabilities of 20 bat species occurring in forest habitat. These probabilities were then processed in GENPRES to assess the sampling effort with an optimal effort benefit ratio required to get the best precisions on bat occupancy. We modelled different spatio temporal scenarios by varying the number of sampling sites and the number of visits. To validate our models the prediction from GENPRES were tested with independent field data. We found that the precisions on the bat occupancy probabilities assessed with the field data were improved for the species studied and optimized for four of them. Thus we conclude that PRESENCE and GENPRES are accurate and useful complementary tools for the development of reliable guidelines for an accurate acoustic sampling design of bat species.

Passive acoustic methods are increasingly used in biodiversity research and monitoring programs because they are cost‐effective and permit the collection of large datasets. However, the accuracy of the results depends on the bioacoustic characteristics of the focal taxa and their habitat use. In particular, this applies to bats which exhibit distinct activity patterns in three‐dimensionally structured habitats such as forests. We assessed the performance of 21 acoustic sampling schemes with three temporal sampling patterns and seven sampling designs. Acoustic sampling was performed in 32 forest plots, each containing three microhabitats: forest ground, canopy, and forest gap. We compared bat activity, species richness, and sampling effort using species accumulation curves fitted with the clench equation. In addition, we estimated the sampling costs to undertake the best sampling schemes. We recorded a total of 145,433 echolocation call sequences of 16 bat species. Our results indicated that to generate the best outcome, it was necessary to sample all three microhabitats of a given forest location simultaneously throughout the entire night. Sampling only the forest gaps and the forest ground simultaneously was the second best choice and proved to be a viable alternative when the number of available detectors is limited. When assessing bat species richness at the 1‐km2 scale, the implementation of these sampling schemes at three to four forest locations yielded highest labor cost‐benefit ratios but increasing equipment costs. Our study illustrates that multiple passive acoustic sampling schemes require testing based on the target taxa and habitat complexity and should be performed with reference to cost‐benefit ratios. Choosing a standardized and replicated sampling scheme is particularly important to optimize the level of precision in inventories, especially when rare or elusive species are expected., Ecology and Evolution, 4 (24), ISSN:2045-7758
