New findings of the recently described Mediterranean goby, Gobius xoriguer Iglésias, Vukić & Šanda 2021, are reported. The records from the Adriatic Sea are the first for the area and the bathyal Tyrrhenian Sea record (374 m) shows that Gobius xoriguer is one of the few Mediterranean gobiid species able to reach these depths. The westernmost Adriatic records of Vanneaugobius dollfusi Brownell, 1978 represent the first record of this species for Italy.

Fifteen years after the first capture of a specimen of Charybdis japonica in the Adriatic Sea, we report the collection of two more specimens near the port of Ravenna. This swimming crab, native from the North Western Pacific, has already proved its invasive capacity in New Zealand coastal waters. The Dodecanese region has a high prevalence of marine alien species due to its close proximity to the Suez Canal and associated Suez shipping lanes, as well as its location at biogeographical border between sub-tropical and tropical biota. This region is therefore very important for the early detection of alien species entering the Mediterranean Sea via the Suez Canal and it is imperative that monitoring of alien species is continued in order to assess the levels of biological invasion. We present results of marine alien surveys, carried out in April 2014 on the island of Rodos. Surveys were performed by a team of marine taxonomic experts and students as part of an EU wide training school, coordinated by the COST Action TD1209 “Alien Challenge”. A variety of survey methods were employed to cover a number of coastal habitats. These included: rapid assessment surveys of epibiota on artificial structures in harbours, rapid assessment snorkelling surveys of biota on sublittoral bedrock, and quantified fishing surveys (both boat-seine and trammel net fishing methods). A total of 33 alien and cryptogenic species were recorded across all the survey techniques. Of these species, 9 represented first records for Rodos: the foraminiferan Amphisorus hemprichii, the polychaetes Branchiomma bairdi, Dorvillea similis, Hydroides dirampha and Pseudonereis anomala, the molluscs Aplysia parvula, Chama pacifica and Septifer cumingii, and the bryozoan Hippopodina feegeensis. Of note the record of the Lessepsian invader Dorvillea similis represents the second record in the Mediterranean Sea. Alien fish species represented a small but notable proportion of the diversity, biomass and number of individuals in fishing catch of both fishing methods. All alien fish species observed were already known to be present in Rodos. The addition of species firstly recorded in this study brings the total number of marine alien and cryptogenic species in the Dodecanese region up to 129 species. The vast majority of these alien species have entered unaided via the Suez Canal, but an increasing number have been introduced through hull fouling or ballast water transfer from shipping. The report includes and examines the list of taxonomists from IAMC (Institute for Coastal Marine Environment), IGG (Institute of Geosciences and Earth Resources), ISE (Institute of Ecosystem Study), and ISMAR (Institute of Marine Sciences), who responded to the Taxonomy Census 2016, their scientific publications and the number of taxa described new for the science in the last 50 years. Every paper is reported with keywords, helping the reader to understand taxon/taxa of each publication and the focal habitat. This analysis becomes the basis for the future steps to resurrect taxonomy within CNR, from common project proposals to the protection of past and present knowledge gained to date in this area.

According to Article 33.4 (ICZN 1999) naresii is an incorrect subsequent spelling, but as this later spelling has been consistently used since, it can be retained under the rule for prevailing usage (Article 33.3. 1, ICZN 1999). Griffin & Tranter (1986: 49) examined the type of E. naresii and assigned it to Pleistacantha as has been suggested by Ihle & Ihle-Landenberg (1931: 162). Miers (1886: 227; footnote, 228) synonymised Pseudorhombila (Pilumnoplax) normani Miers, 1885, with Pilumnoplax heterochir (Studer, 1883). Miers (1886) made a reference to the earlier description published in the Narrative and cites ���Miers, Narr. Chall. Exp., vol. i. pt. ii. p. 587, 1880 ���. His 1880 date of publication may be a typographical error but this is not listed in the Challenger Brachyura errata. Pilumnus heterochir Studer, 1883, is the type species of Neopilumnoplax Ser��ne, in Guinot, 1969. Pseudorhombila normani was overlooked by Guinot in her generic reappraisal (1969) and in her synthesis (1971). This species was not listed as a synonym of N. heterochir by Ng et al. (2008). Stenorhynchus spinifer Miers 1885: 586; 1886: 7, pl. I, fig. 2. Remarks. The 1885 description is short: ���... a new species of Stenorhynchus (Stenorhynchus spinifer), distinguished from all its congeners by the strongly developed supra-ocular and post-ocular spines���. A more extended description, together with a figure of the anterior part of carapace, were provided by Miers (1886: 7, pl. I, fig. 2). Both descriptions were based on a mutilated specimen devoid of all legs, dredged off St. Paul���s Rocks in the South Atlantic. Holthuis et al. (1980) in their review of the decapods of St Paul���s Rocks commented that ���So far as we know the species has not been reported upon since its original description, [which is quoted as Miers, 1886] and its true identity is still uncertain���. Stenorhynchus spinifer is not listed in Ng et al. (2008). The holotype of S. spinifer Miers, 1885, is extant in the Natural History Museum, London and was examined for the present study. The condition of the specimen is poor but some morphological characters are discernable. Its assignment to Stenorhynchus Lamarck, 1818, is considered doubtful as the carapace spinulation compares well with that illustrated by Miers (1886: pl. I, fig. 4) for Achaeopsis spinulosa Stimpson, 1857 from Simon���s Bay, South Africa. This specimen too is extant and was examined. The morphologies of their first male pleopods are similar suggesting that the two specimens described by Miers may be synonymous. Material of Dorhynchus thomsoni Thomson, 1873, was also examined. All three species look remarkably similar. The systematics of A. spinulosus and D. thomsoni has been questioned. Rathbun (1925), Barnard (1950), Griffin (1966) and Griffin and Tranter (1986) assigned both species to Achaeopsis Stimpson, 1857, while Bouvier (1940), Monod (1956), Zariquiey ��lvarez (1968), Christiansen (1969), Ingle (1980) and Manning & Holthuis (1981) retained Achaeopsis and Dorhynchus Thomson, 1873 as distinct genera. Moreover, Manning & Holthuis (1981) concluded that the occurrence of D. thomsoni outside the eastern Atlantic required verification. Achaeopsis (type species A. spinulosus Stimpson, 1857) and Dorhynchus (type species D. thomsoni Thomson, 1873) are placed on the ICZN Official List (Opinion 712). This current study suggests that the systematics of A. spinulosus, S. spinifer and D. thomsoni from the Atlantic should be revisited.
