We analyze the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at z=1-3 selected using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) UVIS channel filters. These HST/WFC3 observations cover about 50 sq. arcmin in the GOODS-South field as a part of the WFC3 Early Release Science program. These LBGs at z=1-3 are selected using dropout selection criteria similar to high redshift LBGs. The deep multi-band photometry in this field is used to identify best-fit SED models, from which we infer the following results: (1) the photometric redshift estimate of these dropout selected LBGs is accurate to within few percent; (2) the UV spectral slope (beta) is redder than at high redshift (z>3), where LBGs are less dusty; (3) on average, LBGs at z=1-3 are massive, dustier and more highly star-forming, compared to LBGs at higher redshifts with similar luminosities (0.1L*<~L<~2.5L*), though their median values are similar within 1-sigma uncertainties. This could imply that identical dropout selection technique, at all redshifts, find physically similar galaxies; and (4) stellar masses of these LBGs are directly proportional to their UV luminosities with a logarithmic slope of ~0.46, and star-formation rates are proportional to their stellar masses with a logarithmic slope of ~0.90. These relations hold true --- within luminosities probed in this study --- for LBGs from z~1.5 to 5. The star-forming galaxies selected using other color-based techniques show similar correlations at z~2, but to avoid any selection biases, and for direct comparison with LBGs at z>3, a true Lyman break selection at z~2 is essential. The future HST UV surveys, both wider and deeper, covering a large luminosity range are important to better understand LBG properties, and their evolution., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ (29 pages, 9 figures)

We study ~330 massive (M* > 10^9.5 MSun), newborn spheroidal galaxies (SGs) around the epoch of peak star formation (1 10^10.5 MSun, and an age trend becomes evident in this mass regime: SGs with M* > 10^11.5 MSun are ~2 Gyrs older than their counterparts with M* < 10^10.5 MSun. Nevertheless, a smooth downsizing trend with galaxy mass is not observed, and the large scatter in starburst ages indicate that SGs are not a particularly coeval population. Around half of the blue SGs appear not to drive their star formation via major mergers, and those that have experienced a recent major merger, show only modest enhancements (~40%) in their specific star formation rates. Our empirical study indicates that processes other than major mergers (e.g. violent disk instability driven by cold streams and/or minor mergers) likely play a dominant role in building SGs, and creating a significant fraction of the old stellar populations that dominate today's Universe., Comment: MNRAS in press

In the first of a series of forthcoming publications, we present a panchromatic catalog of 102 visually-selected early-type galaxies (ETGs) from observations in the Early Release Science (ERS) program with the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey-South (GOODS-S) field. Our ETGs span a large redshift range, 0.35 < z < 1.5, with each redshift spectroscopically-confirmed by previous published surveys of the ERS field. We combine our measured WFC3 ERS and ACS GOODS-S photometry to gain continuous sensitivity from the rest-frame far-UV to near-IR emission for each ETG. The superior spatial resolution of the HST over this panchromatic baseline allows us to classify the ETGs by their small-scale internal structures, as well as their local environment. By fitting stellar population spectral templates to the broad-band photometry of the ETGs, we determine that the average masses of the ETGs are comparable to the characteristic stellar mass of massive galaxies, 11< log(M [Solar]) < 12. By transforming the observed photometry into the GALEX FUV and NUV, Johnson V, and SDSS g' and r' bandpasses we identify a noteworthy diversity in the rest-frame UV-optical colors and find the mean rest-frame (FUV-V)=3.5 and (NUV-V)=3.3, with 1$\sigma$ standard deviations approximately equal to 1.0. The blue rest-frame UV-optical colors observed for most of the ETGs are evidence for star-formation during the preceding gigayear, but no systems exhibit UV-optical photometry consistent with major recent (<~50 Myr) starbursts. Future publications which address the diversity of stellar populations likely to be present in these ETGs, and the potential mechanisms by which recent star-formation episodes are activated, are discussed., Comment: accepted to the Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series

We present results on the size evolution of passively evolving galaxies at 11.5. We identify 30 galaxies in ~40 square arcmin to H<25 mag. We supplement spectroscopic redshifts from the literature with photometric redshifts determined from the 15-band photometry from 0.22-8 micron. We determine effective radii from Sersic profile fits to the H-band image using an empirical PSF. We find that size evolution is a strong function of stellar mass, with the most massive (M* ~ 10^11 Msol) galaxies undergoing the most rapid evolution from z~2 to the present. Parameterizing the size evolution as (1+z)^{-alpha}, we find a tentative scaling between alpha and stellar mass of alpha ~ -1.8+1.4 log(M*/10^9 Msol). We present grism spectra of emission-line galaxies (ELGs) from 0.6-1.6 microns from the Wide Field Camera 3 on the Hubble Space Telescope. These new infrared grism data augment previous optical Advanced Camera for Surveys G800L 0.6-0.95 micron grism data in GOODS-South from the PEARS program, extending the wavelength covereage well past the G800L red cutoff. The ERS grism field was observed at a depth of 2 orbits per grism, yielding spectra of hundreds of faint objects, a subset of which are presented here. ELGs are studied via the Ha, [OIII], and [OII] emission lines detected in the redshift ranges 0.22., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ. Updated to include referee comments. Color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) are presented for the Spitzer SAGE (Surveying the Agents of a Galaxy's Evolution) survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). IRAC and MIPS 24 um epoch one data are presented. These data represent the deepest, widest mid-infrared CMDs of their kind ever produced in the LMC. Combined with the 2MASS survey, the diagrams are used to delineate the evolved stellar populations in the Large Magellanic Cloud as well as Galactic foreground and extragalactic background populations. Some 32000 evolved stars brighter than the tip of the red giant branch are identified. Of these, approximately 17500 are classified as oxygen-rich, 7000 carbon-rich, and another 1200 as ``extreme'' asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. Brighter members of the latter group have been called ``obscured'' AGB stars in the literature owing to their dusty circumstellar envelopes. A large number (1200) of luminous oxygen--rich AGB stars/M supergiants are also identified. Finally, there is strong evidence from the 24 um MIPS channel that previously unexplored, lower luminosity oxygen-rich AGB stars contribute significantly to the mass loss budget of the LMC (1200 such sources are identified)., Comment: LaTex, 31 pages, 10 figures. We have obtained HST/STIS far- and near-UV photometry of globular clusters in four fields in the gE galaxy M87. To a limit of m(FUV) = 25 we detect a total of 66 globular clusters (GCs) in common with the deep HST optical-band study of Kundu et al. (1999). Despite strong overlap in V- and I-band properties, the M87 GCs have UV/optical properties that are distinct from clusters in the Milky Way and in M31. M87 clusters, especially metal-poor ones, produce larger hot HB populations than do Milky Way analogues. Cluster mass is probably not a factor in these distinctions. The most metal-rich M87 GCs in our sample are near Z_sun and overlap the local E galaxy sample in estimated Mg_2 line indices. Nonetheless, the clusters produce much more UV light at a given Mg_2, being up to 1 mag bluer than any gE galaxy in (FUV-V) color. The M87 GCs do not appear to represent a transition between Milky Way-type clusters and E galaxies. The differences are in the correct sense if the clusters are significantly older than the E galaxies. Comparisons with Galactic open clusters indicate that the hot stars lie on the extreme horizontal branch, rather than being blue stragglers, and that the EHB becomes well populated for ages > 5 Gyr. We find that 43 of our UV detections have no optical-band counterparts. Most appear to be UV-bright background galaxies, seen through M87. To quantify the distribution of bar shapes in spiral galaxies, we have analysed 113 H-band and 89 B-band galaxy images from the Ohio State University Bright Spiral Galaxy Survey. Parameters measuring bar shape and position along the Hubble sequence were obtained in each waveband. Evidence was found for a bimodality in the distribution of bar shape, implying that barred and unbarred galaxies are not just the extrema of a single distribution, and that any evolution between these two states must occur on a rapid timescale. Objective bar shapes measured in the H-band were found to be more closely related to visual classifications than B-band bar strengths, as the B-band images are somewhat compromised by localised star formation, especially in later-type systems. Galaxies were found to be more centrally concentrated in the infrared. Later type galaxies showed greater asymmetry in the optical than the infrared, presumably again due to localised star formation, but on average the bar strengths in the two bands were found to be the same., Comment: 6 pages, 5 Figures. in press, 2002 MNRAS

(Abbreviated) We present an imaging survey of 37 nearby galaxies observed with HST/WFPC2 in the mid-UV F300W filter and in F814W. 11 galaxies were also imaged in F255W. These galaxies were selected to be detectable with WFPC2 in one orbit, and cover a wide range of Hubble types and inclinations. The mid-UV spans the gap between our groundbased optical/NIR images and far-UV images available from the Astro/UIT missions. Our first qualitative results are: (1) Early-type galaxies show a significant decrease in surface brightness going from the red to the mid-UV, and in some cases the presence of dust lanes. Some galaxies would be classified different when viewed in the mid-UV, some become dominated by a blue nuclear feature or point source. (2) Half of the mid-type spiral and star-forming galaxies appear as a later morphological type in the mid-UV, as Astro/UIT also found in the far-UV. Some- times these differences are dramatic. The mid-UV images show a considerable range in the scale and surface brightness of individual star-forming regions. Almost all mid-type spirals have their small bulges bi-sected by a dust-lane. (3) Most of the heterogeneous subset of late-type, irregular, peculiar, and merging galaxies display F300W morphologies that are similar to those seen in F814W, but with differences due to recognizable dust features absorbing the bluer light, and due to UV-bright hot stars, star-clusters, and star-forming ridges. In the rest-frame mid-UV, early- to mid-type galaxies are more likely to be misclassified as later types than vice versa. We present a new method for the determination of [Fe/H] for globular clusters. This new method is based on moderate resolution (R~1500) near-IR spectroscopy in the K-band of 6 to 10 of the brightest giants in a cluster. Our calibration is derived from spectra of 105 stars in 15 globular clusters. From measurements of the equivalent widths of three features in these spectra, Na, Ca, and CO, we are able to reproduce the Zinn & West (1984) abundance scale as updated by Harris (1996) to better than 0.10 dex for clusters with near solar [Fe/H] down to an [Fe/H] of -1.8. Three advantages of this method are that it can be used for metal rich, heavily reddened globulars in crowded fields, it does not require any knowledge of any other cluster or stellar parameters such as reddening, distance, or luminosity, and it requires only minimal telescope time. If stellar (J-K)0 and MK values are available as well, the accuracy of the [Fe/H] estimate is further improved. Observations of as few as three stars per cluster still gives an [Fe/H] estimate wich is nearly as reliable as that based on two to three times as many stars. The accuracy of an [Fe/H] value based on observations of CO absorption alone is significantly less than that which results from the three spectroscopic indices. However, we predict that space-based observations of this feature in the integrated light of stellar systems will prove to be of great value for abundance determinations at distances as far as the Coma cluster of galaxies., Comment: 53 pages, 16 Postscript figures. We have obtained HST-NICMOS observations of five of M31's most metal rich globular clusters: G1, G170, G174, G177 & G280. For the two clusters farthest from the nucleus we statistically subtract the field population and estimate metallicities using K-(J-K) color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs). Based on the slopes of their infrared giant branches we estimate [Fe/H]=-1.22+/-0.43 for G1 and -0.15+/-0.37 for G280. We combine our infrared observations of G1 with two epochs of optical HST-WFPC2 V-band data and identify at least one LPV based on color and variability. The location of G1's giant branch in the K-(V-K) CMD is very similar to that of M107, indicating a higher metallicity than our purely infrared CMD: [Fe/H]=-0.9+/-0.2. For the field surrounding G280, we estimate the metallicity to be -1.3 with a spread of 0.5 from the slope and width of the giant branch. Based on the numbers and luminosities of the brightest giants, we conclude that only a small fraction of the stars in this field could be as young as 2 Gyr, while the majority have ages closer to 10 Gyr. The K-band luminosity functions (LFs) of the upper few magnitudes of G1 and G280, as well as for the fields surrounding all clusters, are indistinguishable from the LF measured in the bulge of our Galaxy. This indicates that these clusters are very similar to Galactic clusters, and at least in the surrounding fields observed, there are no significant populations of young luminous stars., Comment: AAS LaTeX v5.0, 17 pages. We have obtained HST-NICMOS observations of five of M31's most metal rich globular clusters. These data allow photometry of individual stars in the clusters and their surrounding fields. However, to achieve our goals -- obtain accurate luminosity functions to compare with their Galactic counterparts, determine metallicities from the slope of the giant branch, identify long period variables, and estimate ages from the AGB tip luminosity, we must be able to disentangle the true properties of the population from the observational effects associated with measurements made in very crowded fields. In this paper we present a careful analysis of photometry in crowded regions, and show how image blending affects the results and interpretation of such data. Although this analysis is specifically for our NICMOS observations in M31, the techniques we develop can be applied to any imaging data taken in crowded fields; we show how the effects of image blending will even limit NGST. We use three different techniques to analyze the effects of crowding on our data, including the insertion of artificial stars (traditional completeness tests) and the creation of completely artificial clusters. They are used to derive threshold- and critical-blending radii for each cluster, which determine how close to the cluster center reliable photometry can be achieved. The simulations also allow us to quantify and correct for the effects of blending on the slope and width of the RGB at different surface brightness levels., Comment: AAS LaTeX v5.0, 18 pages. We present a luminosity function (LF) for lower main sequence stars in the Galactic bulge near (l,b)=(0,-6) to J=24, corresponding to M_J~9.3. This LF is derived from HST + NICMOS observations with the F110W and F160W filters. The main sequence locus in the infrared shows a strong change in slope at J~20.5 (M_J~5.75) which is well fit by new low mass models that include water and molecular hydrogen opacity. Our derived mass function (which is not corrected for binary companions) is the deepest measured to date in the bulge, and extends to 0.15 $M_\odot$ with a power law slope of $\alpha=-1.33\pm0.07$; a Salpeter mass function would have $\alpha=-2.35$. We also combine our J band LF with previously published data for the evolved stars to produce a bulge LF spanning ~15 magnitudes. We show that this mass function has negligible dependence on the adopted bulge metallicity and distance modulus. Although shallower than the Salpeter slope, the slope of the bulge IMF is steeper than that recently found for the Galactic disk ($\alpha=-0.8$ and $\alpha=-0.54$ from the data of Reid & Gizis, 1997, and Gould et al. 1997, respectively, in the same mass interval), but is virtually identical to the disk IMF derived by Kroupa et al. (1993). The bulge IMF is also quite similar to the mass functions derived for those globular clusters which are believed to have experienced little or no dynamical evolution. Finally, we derive the $M/L_J$ ratio of the bulge to be $\sim 0.9\pm0.1$ $M_\odot/L_\odot$, and briefly discuss the implications of this bulge IMF for the interpretation of the microlensing events observed in the direction of the Galactic bulge., Comment: 43 pages, 10 figures. Observations in integrated light (2200-4800 A, 8 to 11 A resolution, S/N > 20) of 4 M31 globular clusters and of the cores of six gE galaxies made with the HST/FOS are presented and analyzed. These data are supplemented by IUE observations of M32, Galactic globulars and stars. From these data we measure UV colors and absorption line strength (ALS) indices, including the key NH feature at 3360 A. We find that our data divide the M31 globular clusters, Galactic globular clusters/Galactic stars, and gE galaxies into three different stellar populations. The old stellar populations of M31 globular clusters and elliptical galaxies are more similar to each other than each is to the Galactic stellar population. Of special note is that the NH feature is so strong in the spectra of M31 globulars that a large (>20) overabundance in nitrogen in these stars, relative to that in Galactic stars, is likely required. We report on the discovery of a boxy/peanut shaped bulge in the highly inclined barred Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC~7582. The peanut shape is clearly evident in near infrared $JHK$ images but obscured by extinction from dust in visible $BVR$ images. This suggests that near infrared imaging surveys will discover a larger number of boxy/peanut morphologies than visible surveys, particularly in galaxies with heavy extinction such as NGC~7582. The bulge in NGC~7582 exhibits strong boxiness compared to other boxy/peanut shaped bulges. If the starburst was mediated by the bar, then it is likely that the bar formed in less than a few bar rotation periods or a few $\times 10^8$ years ago. Outer rings are located at the greatest distance from the galaxy center of any feature resonant with a bar. Because of their large scale, their morphology is sensitive to the distribution of the dark matter in the galaxy. We introduce here how study of these rings can constrain the mass-to-light ratio of the bar, and so the percentage of dark matter in the center of these galaxies. We compare periodic orbits integrated in the ringed galaxy NGC 6782 near the outer Lindblad resonance to the shape of the outer ring. The non-axisymmetric component of the potential resulting from the bar is derived from a near-infrared image of the galaxy. The axisymmetric component is derived assuming a flat rotation curve. We find that the pinched non-self-intersecting periodic orbits are more elongated for higher bar mass-to-light ratios and faster bars. The inferred mass-to-light ratio of the bar depends on the assumed inclination of the galaxy. With an assumed galaxy inclination of i=41 degrees, for the orbits to be consistent with the observed ring morphology the mass-to-light ratio of the bar must be high, greater than 70% of a maximal disk value. For i=45 degrees, the mass-to-light ratio of the bar is $75\pm 15%$ of the maximal disk value. Since the velocity field of these rings can be used to constrain the galaxy inclination as well as which periodic orbit is represented in the ring, further study will yield tighter constraints on the mass-to-light ratio of the bar. If a near maximal disk value for the bar is required, then either there would be little dark matter within the bar, or the dark matter contained in the disk of the galaxy would be non-axisymmetric and would rotate with the bar., Comment: AAS Latex + jpg Figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present grism spectra of emission line galaxies (ELGs) from 0.6-1.6 microns from the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). ELGs are studied via the Ha, [O III ], and [OII] emission lines detected in the redshift ranges 0.2 less than or equal to z less than or equal to 1.6, 1.2 less than or equal to z less than or equal to 2.4 and 2.0 less than or equal to z less than or equal to 3.6 respectively in the G102 (0.8-1.1 microns; R approximately 210) and C141 (1.1-1.6 microns; R approximately 130) grisms. The higher spectral resolution afforded by the WFC3 grisms also reveals emission lines not detectable with the G800L grism (e.g., [S II] and [S III] lines). From these relatively shallow observations, line luminosities, star formation rates, and grism spectroscopic redshifts are determined for a total of 25 ELGs to M(sub AB)(F098M) approximately 25 mag. The faintest source in our sample with a strong but unidentified emission line--is MAB(F098M)=26.9 mag. We also detect the expected trend of lower specific star formation rates for the highest mass galaxies in the sample, indicative of downsizing and discovered previously from large surveys. These results demonstrate the remarkable efficiency and capability of the WFC3 NIR grisms for measuring galaxy properties to faint magnitudes.

The central 5 kpc of the ultra-luminous merging galaxy NGC 3256 was mapped at J, H, K, L, and 10 micrometer, and a 2 micrometer spectra of the nuclear region was obtained. This data was used to identify and characterize the super starburst which has apparently been triggered and fuelled by the merger of two gas rich galaxies. It is also shown that the old stellar population has relaxed into a single spheroidal system, and that a supernova driven wind might eventually drive any remaining gas from the system to leave a relic which will be indistinguishable from an elliptical galaxy.

K magnitudes are given for seven Uranus-occulted stars, together with V and I magnitudes for 20 stars that will be occulted by the Uranian rings in 1986-1990 and 15 that will be occulted by the rings of Saturn in the course of 1986-1991. Occultation stars are noted to be up to 1 mag brighter in the K bandpass than could be predicted on the basis of V-I colors alone; this is explainable in terms of typical degrees of interstellar reddening.

Ground-based observations from 0.6 to 20 microns have identified two luminous, evolved stars surrounded by thick dust shells among the Magellanic Cloud sources detected by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite. Their energy distributions resemble those of typical Galactic OH/IR stars, but they have bolometric magnitudes brighter than -9 and the small-amplitude variability of supergiants. One star, IRAS 04553 - 6825, has a special type of M7.5 and a dust shell which absorbs and reradiates roughly 75 percent of the star's luminosity; its radial velocity confirms its LMC membership. The second star, IRAS 05346 - 6949, has an even thicker dust shell, and the central star is not observable.

Occultation profiles for the nine confirmed Uranian rings obtained from Las Campanas, the European Southern Observatory, and Cerro Tololo on 15-16 August 1980 are compared. The alpha ring shows a 'double-dip' structure; the eta ring shows a broad and narrow component (similar to Saturn's F ring); and the epsilon ring shows six features that appear in the data from all three observatories. Diffraction fringes appear at the edges of several of the occultation profiles.

Uranus upper atmosphere occultation observations are reported for August 15-16, 1980, and April 26, 1981. Mean atmospheric light curves of 154 + or - 15 K and 132 + or - 15 K, respectively, are derived from the light curves. A comparison of all available Uranus occultation data since March 1977 suggests a significant mean atmospheric temperature change, with a typical 15 K/year variation. It is suggested that molecular and eddy diffusion, together with atmospheric dynamics, are potentially as important as radiation in the upper atmosphere heat balance of Uranus. The close agreement of occultation immersion and emersion temperatures further suggests that effective meridional transport occurs on Uranus.

The results of an observational program aimed at setting up a network of faint near-infrared standards of sufficient accuracy are reported. The network covers both northern and southern hemispheres and includes standards red enough to provide at least a limited check on color transformations. The standards are set up at J (1.2 micron), H (1.6 micron), K (2.2 microns), and L (3.5 microns), and their H2O and CO molecular absorption indices are determined. The problem of color transformations between observatories is discussed briefly. All magnitudes presented are transformed to the natural system defined by the CIT observations.

Observations of a stellar occultation by Uranus and its nine rings are presented and used to examine the structures and kinematics of the rings. The observations of the occultation of the K giant star KM 12 were obtained in the K band with the 4-m CTIO telescope at a signal-to-noise ratio higher than any previously obtained. Ring occultation profiles reveal the alpha ring to possibly have a double structure and less abrupt boundaries than the gamma ring, which exhibits diffraction fringes, while the eta ring is a broad ring with an unresolved narrow component at its inner edge. The present timing data, as well as previous occultation timings, are fit to a kinematic model in which all nine rings are treated as coplanar eclipses of zero inclination, precessing due to the zonal harmonics of the Uranian gravitational potential to obtain solutions for the ring orbits. Analysis of the residuals from the fitted orbits reveals that the proposed model is a good representation of ring kinematics. The reference system defined by the orbit solutions has also been used to obtain a value of 0.022 + or - 0.003 for the ellipticity of Uranus and a Uranian rotation period of 15.5 h.

On March 20, 1980, observations of occultations by rings alpha, beta, gamma, delta, and epsilon were observed from Cerro Tololo and Sutherland. A model ring profile was fit to the data to obtain the midtimes of the occultations and the widths of the profiles. A 14-parameter kinematic model, including J sub 2, J sub 4, and some of the orbital elements for rings 4, alpha, beta, and epsilon as free parameters, was fit to these data and previous ring occultation timings. The results yield J sub 2 = (3.396 + or - 0.020) x 10 to the -3 and a 2 sigma upper limit, absolute value of J sub 4 less than 7 x 10 to the -5th. Uniform precession models for rings alpha, beta are established and the dispersion in the values of semimajor axes and eccentricities for rings alpha, beta, and epsilon have been obtained. If self-gravity is the cause of the uniform precession, the mass of the beta ring is estimated at approximately 4 x 10 to the 16th g; the mass of the alpha ring probably is also near this value.

New broad-band infrared JHK data and narrow-band CO and H2O indices for the semistellar nucleus of M31 are presented. The data were obtained specifically to test a prediction of a recent synthesis model by Faber and French in which the ratio of dwarf-to-giant light increases strongly in going from the bulge to the nucleus of M31. The new infrared data do not support such a model. Some alternative explanations for the behavior of the various indices are given, but the apparent conflict between the Faber-French interpretation of the strength of the Na I 8190 A feature and our data is not satisfactorily resolved.

Measurements of the 1.0-mm continuum emission from seven Southern Hemisphere H II region/molecular cloud complexes located in the inner part of the Galaxy near the galactic plane are presented. The sources were mapped based on observations made by a remote-controlled prime focus infrared photometer on the Cerro Tololo 4-m telescope at a resolution of 65 arcsec. The morphologies and physical characteristics of the sources investigated are found to be similar, with dust column densities of 0.006-0.030 g/sq cm, linear extents of 1.5-3 pc, total masses of 20,000-100,000 solar masses and infrared luminosities between 2 and 4 x 10 to the 6th solar luminosities. In all cases, the dense, extended dust envelopes are observed to be singly peaked and centered about one or more compact near-infrared sources, with a radial density distribution around the central peak proportional to the -1.5 power of the radius as in other extended 1.0-mm continuum sources.

Infrared photometric measurements of 19 normal and giant elliptical galaxies are reported which were made with apertures having diameters 0.1 to 1.3 times the visual galactic diameters. The derived V (2.2 micron) colors, ranging from 3.15 to 3.60 magnitudes, are compared with the results of Grasdalen (1975) for 28 spiral and elliptical galaxies. All but one of the present magnitudes are found to be systematically brighter than Grasdalen's by 0.07 to 0.46 magnitude, and no significant radial color gradient is observed.

The O-B5 stars, supergiants, young clusters, and associations within 1 kpc of the sun populate two flat systems inclined to each other by 19 to 22 deg. The historical background, statistical significance, composition, spatial arrangement of the contents, and interstellar extinction in the two belts are discussed. A more or less random distribution in space and in age characterizes the O-B5 stars of the 'galactic belt', which is aligned nearly along the Milky Way. The 'Gould belt' is inclined to the Milky Way (north in Sco-Oph and south in Orion), and exhibits a projected distribution of O-B5 stars in its mean plane that resembles a 'dragonfly', with five major features defining it. A crude 'diameter' of the system is 750 to 1000 pc, and the sun's position is eccentric, lying toward Ophiuchus. The nuclear age of the system, while not unique, may be characterized as 30 m.y. from the spectral type of the broad main-sequence turnup near B2-5. Most of the O-B2 stars and youngest stellar groups near the sun belong to the Gould belt, but both belts have approximately equal space densities of B3-B5 stars and similar average values of interstellar extinction.

New optical and infrared observations of several stars in the distant globular cluster Pal 12 show that they have CO strengths and heavy element abundances only slightly less than in M 71, one of the more metal-rich globular clusters. Pal 12 thus has a metal abundance near the high end of the range over which globular clusters exist and lies in the outer galactic halo. Its red horizontal branch is not anomalous in view of the abundance that has been found.

Several 1.0 continuum mapping observations were made of seven southern hemisphere h12/molecular cloud complexes with 65 arcsec resolution. The radial density distribution of the clouds with central luminosity sources was determined observationally. Strong similarities in morphology and general physical conditions were found to exist among all of the southern clouds in the sample.

It is noted that high surface brightness 1.0 mm continuum emission has been mapped in nine southern hemisphere H II/molecular cloud complexes: NGC 6334, RCW 38, RCW 57, RCW 122, RCW 117, G333.6-0.2, G351.6-1.3, W 33, and W 33A. All of the sources are in the inner part of the galaxy near the galactic plane. New 1.0 mm continuum mapping results with a resolution of 65 arcsec are presented.

Infrared (JHK) photometry is presented for a sample of E and S0 galaxies. The sample comprises 80 field galaxies, 35 galaxies in the Virgo cluster, and 22 in the Coma cluster. The galaxies span a range of 6 mag in absolute magnitude. Multiaperture UBVR photometry for 107 field galaxies is also presented. The infrared data are combined with these optical data or with published optical data to give V-K colors. This paper describes the observational techniques and lists the data.
