Emigration has been a crucial experience for the inhabitants of the Italian Friuli region, at least since the 13th century when Friulian peddlers started journeying from country to country. When it grew into a mass phenomenon in the 19th century, an increasing number of Friulian workers arrived in Hungary, and were involved in industrial activities as both entrepreneurs and employed labour. They gained a leading role in the Hungarian meat industry with the establishment of salami factories that created the conditions for the spread of a new product, the salami. In Debrecen, two Friulian families pursued this activity with numerous Friulian workers and one of them, the Vidoni company, became the third-largest salami factory in Hungary. The activities of the Friulian factories are considerable not only for Hungarian industrial history, but also because they shed light on the migratory processes and broaden the horizon of historical knowledge on Hungarian-Italian relations.

ECOCRITICISM ,CRITICISM ,ITALIAN poetry ,POETICS - Abstract
This article pushes at the interdisciplinary boundaries of literary ecocriticism to suggest a new rhetorical figure: the "geometaphor." The geometaphor is a metaphor that is not only geographically marked, but also rooted in a specific territory. In short, it is a poetic metaphor with a specific address. This article defines this concept through references spanning from the medieval Francis of Assisi to the nineteenth-century poet Giacomo Leopardi, and through a sample of geometaphors in three Northern coastal areas: Liguria, the Veneto, and Friuli. They are the enclosed gardens of the Cinque Terre in Eugenio Montale's collection Ossi di seppia (Cuttlefish Bones); the harbor and hills of Trieste in Umberto Saba's Trieste e una donna (Trieste and a Woman); and the amphibious streets of Venice in Anna Toscano's Doso la polvere. The technological component of this research is indispensable, and it grew out of a pedagogical need to present Italian poetry to an audience of students on the other side of the ocean with the help of Google Earth. In this essay, the omino facilitates a visualization of poetical terms. It is "dropped" in specific places on the Italian map to trace the contours of its poetic geography. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

From the mid-19th century to the present day, women’s literary creation in Friulian is quite rich and varied. We propose to retrace the main creations in Friulian of a few women of letters, highlighting the stylistic choices, the literary genres specifically selected and, above all, the psychological motivations which prompted these cultivated women to express themselves in Friulian, in preference to the official language of the country, Italian. Caterina Percoto celebrates the rural world, Maria Forte performs the work of an ethnologist when she records the expressions used by the characters in her stories, Novella Cantarutti describes a Friulian valley through the adoption of its dialectal variation, while Nelvia Di Monte recovers the language of her father as the repository of the culture of her family and her native land. These and other experiences which are described in this article are the fruit of an acute linguistic awareness and aim at increasing the value of Friulian as a literary language.

MORPHOTECTONICS , *LAST Glacial Maximum , *THRUST belts (Geology) , *ALLUVIAL plains , *PALEOGENE , *OROGENIC belts , *DEFORMATION of surfaces - Abstract
New geological and morphotectonic surface data coupled with the revision of the ENI-Exploration & Production seismic lines, made it possible to review the tectonic structure of the Pliocene-Quaternary front of the eastern Southern Alps in the area between the Cellina River and the Tagliamento River (central Carnic Prealps, NE Italy). The eastern Southern Alps are a SE-verging fold and thrust belt in activity from the middle Miocene to the Present. The presence of Paleogene structural inheritances influenced the current structural arrangement of the thrust-belt and the potential seismogenesis, supporting segmentation of the Neoalpine external front. In particular, the presence of the NW-SE trending Mt.Ciaurlec – Palmanova – Pozzuolo structural high, inherited from the W-ward propagation of the External Dinarides during Paleogene, generated lateral lithological facies change and influenced not only the undulation between the Neogene-Quaternary Maniago-Meduno and Toppo-Forgaria Thrusts, but also the segmentation of the outermost portion of the Neoalpine external front consisting into two segments with different geometric and structural characteristics: 1) the ENE-WSW striking Arba-Sequals segment that runs buried under the upper Pleistocene sequences of the piedmont Friuli plain; 2) the W-E Ragogna segment that shows widespread evidence of surface deformation of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) alluvial plain. In particular, the long-lasting activity of the Ragogna segment is testified by the late Miocene-Middle Pleistocene angular unconformities, forced drainage anomalies and tilted and uplifted Quaternary palaeosurfaces. A discussion on the seismogenic potential of the investigated structures is proposed. • The active front of eastern Southern Alps in the carnic Prealps (NE Italy) is segmented. • The Paleogene inheritances influenced the present structural architecture of ESA Neogene-Quaternary active front. • Seismogenic potential of each active structure has been evaluated. - Abstract
Some recent studies have questioned the republicanism elaborated by Hans Baron and the Cambridge School. Following this approach, the article adopts a peripheral perspective, taking into consideration what is produced far from Florence, in areas where the influence of the great towns appears limited. The research investigates the plurality of forms of republican-humanist political discourse in some Friuli’s communities in the 15th Century. Specifically, the article analyses the relationship between humanistic ideological production and institutional dimension. Thanks to the humanist context, communities and ruling elites redefine, in dialogue with venetian power, a new aristocratic ideology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The article introduces the three essays that make up the monographic section of this issue, Republic and Humanism in Italy in the Fifteenth Century. They examine, in an innovative way, the problem of the relationship between humanism and political cultures in three different contexts: the towns of the Veneto, the communities of Friuli (all under Venetian rule: the former studied by Clémence Revest, the latter by Lorenzo Freschi), the Kingdom of Naples and, in particular, its great capital (Monica Santangelo). Despite the obvious peculiarities of each of these realities, these contributions share an attempt to rethink the Italian political space and the categories with which it has long been represented. In the 1970s, Pasolini avidly sought to protect and preserve Italy's vernacular heritage in the face of post-war economic development and its encumbering impact on small town life. Despite his outspoken critique of mass media, he chose to televise this message in Le mura di Sana and pasolini e... "la forma della città." Misunderstandings about their production have entangled the reception of these short films for nearly 50 years. Newly collected archival sources and oral accounts reorder their chronologies, enabling us to contextualize the artist's precocious defense of tangible and intangible heritage and local landscapes. The role which Orte (Viterbo) plays in these documentaries reveals how Pasolini's surrogate home in La Tuscia relates back to his Friulan roots and identity. What emerges is a radical manifesto for an ecosystemic preservation of cultural landscapes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Moulin and Benedetti (2018), https://doi.org/10.1029/2018TC004958 present a new interpretation of the Neogene‐Quaternary tectonic evolution of the Eastern Southern Alps (ESA) in Veneto‐Friuli. After the reinterpretation of literature field data by means of remote sensing analysis (Digital Elevation Model interpretation), they calculated deformation rates of the tectonic structures through age interpretation of geomorphological surfaces of the Veneto‐Friuli piedmont plain. The authors linked the result of surface analysis to the thrust and fold architecture of the ESA basing on the Castellarin et al. (2006), https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tecto.2005.10.013 interpretation of TRANSALP project and the Friuli geological map at the scale 1:150,000 (Carulli, 2006). Discussing their new architecture of the ESA, the authors finally yielded rates of Europe‐Adria plates convergence and suggested fragmentation of Adria over the last 1–2 Ma. The present comment is aimed at discussing several critical points concerning: the use of the geomorphological and chronological data; the misinterpretation of the Digital Terrain Model; the reconstruction of the balanced geological cross section. Moreover, the application of a structural model defined in a certain area to another without considering peculiar structural complexities available in the literature results is geologically and methodologically questionable. Plain Language Summary: The late Quaternary sedimentary successions of Eastern Southern Alps (ESA) recorded important deformations related to the ongoing Europe/Adria collision. Their chronology has been updated in the last years, thanks to detailed surveys and analyses. Our knowledge on the tectonic architecture of the ESA has been recently improved by the new Geological maps of Italy (CARG Project: Zanferrari, Avigliano, Monegato, et al., 2008, Zanferrari, Avigliano, Grandesso, et al., 2008; Zanferrari et al., 2013). However, the bulk of the tectonic and chronological data was discarded or improperly used in Moulin and Benedetti (2018), https://doi.org/10.1029/2018TC004958 in their estimate of the shortening and associated rates and hence in the subsequent discussion on the fragmentation of Adria. Key Points: The chronological constraints and the shortening rates derive from misreading of the available literature and not from new original dataThe description of the tectonic structures do not consider updated geological information available for the study areaThe balanced cross‐section is inconsistent with the major crustal models for the Eastern Southern Alps, no alternate discussion is provided [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

he aim of this work is the stratigraphic revision of the sequences outcropping on the southwestern side of the M. Mia — M. Matajur anticline. This area, until now, was poorly studied from a geological point of view. Norian to Lower Cuisian strata were recognized, With two hiatuses in the Early and Late Cretaceous. Lithological, biostratigraphical and sedimentological characteristics are described related to formations already known from the bibliography ("Dolomia Principale", "Calcare del Dachstein" and "Calcare di Soccher") while two new Mesozoic carbonatic units are defined; ' 'Calcari della Fornace" (Lower Liassic—Tithonian) and "Calcareniti di Linder" (Berriasian—Albian). Furthermore several new informal units within the clastic Sequences are differentiated: six Maastrichtian units C 'BrecCia di Montefosca", "Marne Rosse di S. Andrea", "Flysch di Paceida", "Calcareniti di Mersino", "Flysch di M. Brieka" and "Calcareniti di M. SEVENTEENTH century , *CONNOTATION (Linguistics) , *ASSERTIVENESS (Psychology) , *SECTS , *PENINSULAS ,JESUIT history - Abstract
The paper deals with modern age provincial identities in the border area between the Republic of Venice and the hereditary lands of the House of Habsburg, which from political, social and religious points of view displayed some specific features. The study is based on sources related to the Jesuit school system in Ljubljana and the Latin school in Ru.e (near Maribor), which allowed us to investigate the dynamics of identities characterising people from this area in the first half of the 17th century. In the sources, these were presented with attributes, such as Italus, Goritiensis, Foroiuliensis, Tergestinus, Vtinensis etc., which carried provincial, local, linguistic/cultural and other connotations. At the beginning of the 17th century the use of such denominations still fluctuated. This is especially true of the attribute Italus, which at the time had geographical, cultural and linguistic connotations and was used to denote people from the border area as well as from other parts of the Apennine Peninsula. Towards the mid-17th century, the use of these appellations became more stable and more structured. This is particularly evident in the case of the label Goritiensis, which reflected the self-assertion of the Gorizia identity towards the middle of the 17th century. Decisive for this assertion was the war of Gradisca, fought between the Habsburg and the Venetians (1615.1617). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article analyzes the apparent communality between two lists of surnames: those who participated in the Strumieri-Zambarlani feud in Friuli in the sixteenth century and the Fascist and Communist combatants in the region after the end of World War II. If the alignment of people in these antagonistic factions was something more than coincidental, then how can the 377-year gap between the two violent moments be explained? The essay explores four possible hypotheses to explain why it was that when civil order broke down as it did in the spring and early summer of 1945 combatants aligned themselves as had their ancestors many generations before. - Abstract
This thesis-based study examines changing ethnic groups within the Valcanale region since its national affiliation to Italy after the end of World War I, focusing on German and Slovenian-speaking minorities (i.e., autochthonous Valcanale inhabitants) in relation to their various external and self-recognition. In addition, the study addresses the impact of spatial structures over a “longue durée” based on symbolic ethnicity within a cultural landscape heritage framework. It presents a theoretical outline followed by “contact persons-based research” and analysis of relevant persistent cultural landscape elements utilising on-site studies. Primarily, the autochthonous population – now numbering less than one hundred German speakers and just over three hundred Slovenian speakers in the Valcanale – has been affected by assimilation and the belated safeguarding of minorities (from 1999 onwards). In this respect, a “Little Europe” is still evident, even if the broad existence of the area’s four official languages – the two minority languages plus Italian and Friulian – has been almost lost in the meantime. The region’s generational shift (including intermarriage) and extremely significant population decline have intensified this development since the 1990s. Yet echoes of the autochthonous Valcanale population are reflected in the area’s symbolic ethnicity of material and immaterial cultural heritage. This is increasingly perceived as an asset by the majority Italian-speaking population, strengthening a no longer ethnolinguistic but new, regionally connoted identity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This exploratory study examines how inhabitants of the Italian town of Udine make sense of the global through their daily interactions with their city, and the preexisting discourses they use to talk about it. The respondents discuss the global, mainly borrowing from nationalistic discourses, which connect to two focal points that seem to lead the understanding of the global: difference in the culture, represented by the people and the food, and capitalism represented by the commercial centers. Ultimately, the research notes that the comprehension of globalization stems from the normality or exceptionality of the "other" in relation to its sociocultural and urban context. A brief excursus is presented on the projects funded by the Civil Protection of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region aimed at reducing seismic risk. The projects have tackled different aspects of seismic risk reduction: the regional seismometric network can give information on earthquakes in real time, the seismic hazard and risk maps represent the guidelines on how to construct new buildings and where to retrofit existing ones with high priority, the survey on the school buildings in Friuli-Venezia Giulia provides indications on what to do to make them safe. A special session on the 1976 Friuli earthquake was organised during the 35th Assembly of the European Seismological Commission in Trieste, Italy, on the 40th anniversary of that event. Summarising the oral and poster contributions presented during the session, together with a few others related to the same subject, we present a general overview of the scientific findings as the final chapter of scientific research on that earthquake, which can be considered the first Italian seismic event studied with modern scientific tools. The period commonly referredas Eneolithic or Copper Age is currently poorly documented in Friuli (Borgna et al. 2011). In particular, features that can be clearly related to the Bell Beaker culture appear to be entirely absent. Until recently, this long sequence of time was basically considered a transition between the Neolithic and a period of the Bronze Age that has been somewhat better documented, but in many ways still needs to be clearly defined. The discovery of the remains of two dwellings and the re-analysis of ceramic and metal artefacts belonging to the last centuries of the third millennium BC has recently suggested a cultural framework for the north-eastern tip of the Italian territory that, in general, agrees with what has already been observed for the Eneolithic period and is in accordance with the trends of the following Early Bronze Age period.

Seismic codes using the performance-based approach for seismic design of critical and important structures generally refer to seismic hazard which takes into account a lower exceedance probability than that used for ordinary buildings. In the present study, the seismic hazard for an oil pipeline, located in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region (NE Italy), has been calculated in terms of PGA and PGV with a 2475-year return period, and compared with estimates calculated with the standard 475-year return period used for ordinary buildings. The results, referring to three soil types (rock, stiff soil, and soft soil), have been combined through GIS technology in a single map (soil seismic hazard map) on the basis of the local lithological characterization. The major earthquakes considered in the study have been associated with the linear sources found in the database of Italian seismic sources, considering the characteristic earthquake model. The regional seismogenic zonation has been added to the linear sources in order to consider minor seismicity as described by the Gutenberg–Richter model. Quaternary faults in the broader Trieste area, long enough to justify, at least, a characteristic magnitude of 6, have been added in the source model to take into account unlikely but possible unknown sources. The Transalpine Oil Pipeline, which connects Trieste (Italy) to Ingolstadt (Germany), is the crude-oil distribution system considered in the present study. It consists of a storage tank, compressor stations, and buried pipeline. For the characterization of the expected damage to the infrastructure in case of an earthquake, we have used underground pipeline seismic vulnerability curves that relate a performance indicator, such as the reparation rate (number of ruptures per kilometre), with a representative ground motion parameter (e.g., PGA or PGV). In this study, we have considered as performance indicator the consequences of a rupture in the pipeline caused by a seismic event. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Giovanni Antonio Battaglia was a notary and a secular priest of the diocese of Aquileia. He was active between the late fifteenth and the first four decades of the sixteenth century in Gemona, his place of birth, in the castle of Porcia and the city of Udine. A register he compiled (Udine, Archivio notarile antico, n. 2247), contains two documents which are worthy of attention. The first one is a funeral
lauda in Italian vernacular which completes the rather short list of the religiouslaude repertoire of the Friulian region between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The second document is the textDolce Regina, dona la tua pace . This work can be placed within the framework of the brotherhoods of theBattuti , which Battaglia served as a priest and as a teacher. A rather composite Latin text also appears on the same page of the notarial register. It includes an invocation to theMagi , a quote from the Scriptures and an adapted liturgical oration. The presence of this exorcism, unusual if compared to the local context of traditional beliefs and therapeutic practices, requires wide-ranging comparisons. The figure of Battaglia himself also deserves further analysis especially in order to understand his cultural background as well as clarifying his relationship with the humanists whom he was corresponding with. 40. IL TERREMOTO DEL 1511 IN FRIULI.

- Abstract
On the 27
th March 1511, the Italian region of Friuli was hit by a devastating earthquake, which provoked dispersed damage, widespread destruction and several hundreds of victims. The seismic activity involved all major urban centers, although the area in which the event had a major impact seems to be the one surrounding the alpine and piedmont belt. Because of its extraordinary intensity, the 1511 earthquake deeply shook people's consciousness to the extent that it was considered an exceptional event and the most frightening and severe disaster that the Friulian population had ever experienced. However, the peculiarity of this earthquake resides beyond the material damages that it provoked and has to be traced back to the relationship that several people of the time established with the blood-filled peasants' revolt. The rebellion burst out one month earlier on the Carnival day of Fat Thursday and it led to the death of tens of Friulian nobles. Numerous authors of the time gave an account of the revolt within narratives and chronicles in which they left considerable space for the description of the following earthquake, interpreted by the contemporaries as a divine punishment for the matters that occurred. This chronicle-based corpus of sources, together with public documentation produced by the most important municipal administrations, has been thoroughly examined in an unprecedented and systematic way, in order to understand the actual size and impact of the event, the exact duration of the earthquake, as well as the number and intensity of the aftershocks. This is particularly crucial in order to provide an overall view of the immediate consequences upon the entire region, including a reasonable estimation of the number of casualties. The aim of this study is not only to portray an exhaustive picture of the impact that the mournful event had upon Friulian society, but also to investigate in depth how a catastrophe of this dimension has been experienced, faced and dealt with by the major communities of the region, examined one by one, according to the availability of sources. This contribution examines the latest novel by Carlo Sgorlon, completed on June 24, 2008, but published posthumously, ten years after the author’s death: L’isola di Brendano ( Brendano’s Island). The book introduces character types dear to the Italian writer: Brendano Mac Finnegan, a hard-working and creative architect of Irish origin, who comes from abroad to Vallorsaria, an imaginary town in the Alps, where he falls in love with Antonia, a local woman; Antonia’s young daughter, Jole, who gives birth to a boy endowed with extraordinary powers: Bindo; an Afghan baby sitter, called Fatma, who joins the three above mentioned characters, forming with them a strange but happy family; Brendano’s friend, Amos, who represents a man incapable of positive attitude towards life and destined for a tragic end. With L’isola di Brendano, Sgorlon paid homage to a literary tradition he considered the most genuine, close and familiar to him. In the novel it is possible to identify many references, both explicit and implicit, to various writers, including Samuel Beckett, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Elsa Morante. In this way, L’isola di Brendano resembles the mirror of a small but well-chosen library.

- Abstract
Knowledge of past seismic history is fundamental for understanding earthquakes and seismic hazards in particular. The longer records go back in time, the better the understanding can be. Accessing extensive paleoseismic archives in lakes adds crucial knowledge to instrumental and historical seismic data that is limited in time. In Carinthia, even though located in an intraplate region with generally low seismic activity, historical data documented severe earthquakes in 1201 CE, 1348 CE, 1690 CE, 1857 CE and 1976 CE. These earthquakes caused mass transport deposits and turbidites in Wörthersee and Millstätter See, but still little is known about the seismic imprint in small, shallow lakes. To shed new light on small lakes Afritzer See and Faaker See were studied within this thesis. In two campaigns, seismic profiles were shot as well as sediment short cores and surface cores were retrieved. Seismic analysis and sediment core investigation, by means of macroscopic and microscopic analysis; multi-sensor core logging; x-ray computer tomography scans; x- ray fluorescence core scanning and 14C- and 210Pb/137Cs-age dating, allowed detecting event deposits and mapping their spatial distribution. Investigations of this thesis obtained paleo-earthquake records of the last ~ 2000 years for Afritzer See and ~ 500 years for Faaker See. The sedimentary sequences of Afritzer See reveal an amalgamated turbidite of the 1348 CE earthquake that supports the hypothesis of an epicentral location closer to Villach than to Friuli. Furthermore, the sediment contains several turbidites with stacked, coarse grained, evenly distributed appearance that were interpreted as flood-related deposits and one significantly thicker, homogeneous appearing turbidite, mainly deposited in the southern basin that was assigned to human induced slope failures. The 1998 CE Krn and 1976 CE Friuli earthquakes are assumed to have caused in-situ soft sediment deformation structures in the basin plain of Faaker Se, Masterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 2022

COMMONS ,REPUBLIC of Venice, 697-1797 ,ITALIAN history ,MOUNTAINS ,HISTORY - Abstract
The interest towards the history of collective resources in Italy significantly grew over last decades. One of the main limitations of the studies which emerged so far is the lack of interest for quantitative data. Also in Italy during the early modern age, pastures were the main collective resources. These had a certain impact on the economy, both on a local and on a State level, but the extent of such impact has not been properly analyzed yet, also due to the lack of sources. A possible (indirect) way to estimate the impact of collective resources on the economy is farm animals' count. At the beginning of the 17
th century the Republic of Venice, in particular the Superintendents over common goods in the mainland (Provveditori sopra beni comunali in Terraferma), undertook a survey of goods which under Venetian laws belonged to the State, but were granted for use to village communities. In this context, communities needed to declare the goods they owned, which were indeed designated as «communal». Shortly afterwards, superintendents would list these goods in a «catastico» and granted them again to the communities under a detailed regulation. In the declaration, communities had to inform superintendents about the number of «fires», that is the families the village consisted of, and the number of «big animals », the cattle and horses that each family owned. These declarations are known for Friuli, the widest area of the Venetian «Terraferma», displaying also the most diverse landscape. It is reasonable to identify a ratio between the availability of forage deriving from communal pastures and the number of cattle for breeding. This article elaborates on this relationship by comparing mountains and plains in Venetian Friuli at the beginning of the 17th century. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

In this paper one fibula from the cult place at Monte di Medea near Gorizia/Gorica in Friuli will be presented, which is the sole entirely preserved example from this site. It belongs to variant VIId of the Certosa fibulae, but it has an uncommon two-part construction, which was a motive for this detailed discussion. Previous knowledge about this particular variant of the Certosa fibulae is supplemented with description of the typological differences between the d, e and f variants of type VII – which are often improperly distinguished from one another in published treatises – and with examples of the VIId variant published after the year 1976, in order to update the area of its distribution. Its chronology is also discussed, as well as two-part construction of Certosa fibulae, as new phenomenon.

The European continent is currently experiencing a resurgence of nationalist movements that are infiltrating into mainstream politics and society. Sub-state nations are complicating this national power and identity struggle with their own specific agendas negotiated against and through the nation-state and the supranational frameworks. This explorative article considers the rich case study of Friuli, a sub-state nation in the north-east of Italy, and it analyzes how local media construct, develop, and negotiate the Friulian identity in relation to Europe, the Italian nation-state and other sub-state communities., Nazioni e Regioni, N. 14 (2019)

I Turcs Tal Friul is a play in Friulian by Pasolini. Set during the 1499 Ottoman invasion of Friuli, the play invites comparisons with the German occupation during WW2 and the vicissitudes of Pasolini and his brother Guido, who joined the armed resistance struggle. The article argues for the importance of I Turcs in reassessing Pasolini’s engagement with Friuli and its language, as well as his ideas about the entry into history of marginal communities that he will later extend to other peripheries.
