Search

The presence of young massive stars in the Galactic Centre (GC) raises questions about star formation near the black hole Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*). Additionally, the initial mass function (IMF) in this region appears different from the standard Salpeter/Kroupa law. Extreme extinction and crowding limit our understanding of the stellar population, with spectroscopic data available only for selected bright sources. We aim to improve knowledge about the distribution and IMF of young, massive stars near Sgr A*. Using intermediate band (IB) photometry, we identify candidates for massive young stars through Bayesian inference, a neural network, and a gradient-boosted trees algorithm. We obtained spectral energy distributions for 6590 stars, 1181 of which have been previously classified spectroscopically. We identify 351 stars classified as early types by all three methods, including 155 newly identified candidates. The radial density profiles for late and early-type stars fit broken power laws, with a break radius of 9.2 +- 0.6'' for early-type stars. Late-type stars show a core-like distribution around Sgr A*, while early-type stars' density increases steeply towards the black hole. We infer a top-heavy IMF of young stars near Sgr A* (R < 9''), with a power-law of 1.6 +- 0.1. At greater distances, a standard Salpeter/Kroupa IMF fits the data. IB photometry also constrains the metallicities of late-type stars, estimating metallicities for over 600 stars. The IMF variation with radial distance suggests different star formation mechanisms, with a top-heavy IMF near Sgr A* consistent with disc star formation.

We present the lifetime star formation histories (SFHs) for six ultra-faint dwarf (UFD; $M_V>-7.0$, $ 4.9<\log_{10}({M_*(z=0)}/{M_{\odot}})<5.5$) satellite galaxies of M31 based on deep color-magnitude diagrams constructed from \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} imaging. These are the first SFHs obtained from the oldest main sequence turn-off of UFDs outside the halo of the Milky Way (MW). We find that five UFDs formed at least 50\% of their stellar mass by $z=5$ (12.6~Gyr ago), similar to known UFDs around the MW, but that 10-40\% of their stellar mass formed at later times. We uncover one remarkable UFD, \A{XIII}, which formed only 10\% of its stellar mass by $z=5$, and 75\% in a rapid burst at $z\sim2-3$, a result that is robust to choices of underlying stellar model and is consistent with its predominantly red horizontal branch. This "young" UFD is the first of its kind and indicates that not all UFDs are necessarily quenched by reionization, which is consistent with predictions from several cosmological simulations of faint dwarf galaxies. SFHs of the combined MW and M31 samples suggest reionization did not homogeneously quench UFDs. We find that the least massive MW UFDs ($M_*(z=5) \lesssim 5\times10^4 M_{\odot}$) are likely quenched by reionization, whereas more massive M31 UFDs ($M_*(z=5) \gtrsim 10^5 M_{\odot}$) may only have their star formation suppressed by reionization and quench at a later time. We perform a comprehensive determination of the systemic proper motions of 74 dwarf galaxies and dwarf galaxy candidates in the Local Group based on Gaia early data release 3. The outputs of the analysis for each galaxy, including probabilities of membership, will be made publicly available. The analysis is augmented by a determination of the orbital properties of galaxies within 500 kpc. We adopt the flexible Bayesian methodology presented by McConnachie \& Venn (2020), which takes into account the location of the stars on the sky, on the colour-magnitude diagram and on the proper motion plane. We apply some modifications, in particular to the way the colour-magnitude diagram and spectroscopic information are factored in, e.g. by including stars in several evolution phases. The bulk motions are integrated in three gravitational potentials: two where the Milky Way is treated in isolation and has a mass 0.9 \& 1.6 $\times 10^{12}$M$_{\odot}$ and the time-varying potential by Vasiliev et al. (2021), which includes the infall of a massive Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We are able to determine bulk proper motions for 73 systems, and we consider reliable 66 of these measurements. For the first time, systemic motions are presented for galaxies out to a distance of 1.4 Mpc, in the NGC~3109 association. The inclusion of the infall of a massive LMC significantly modifies the orbital trajectories of the objects, with respect to orbit integration in static Milky Way-only potentials, and leads to 6 galaxies being likely associated to the LMC, 3 possibly associated and 1 recently captured object. We discuss the results of the orbit integration in the context of the relation of the galaxies to the system of Milky Way satellites, implications for the too-big-to-fail problem, impact on star formation histories, and tidal disruption., Comment: Submitted to A&A. 47 pages

The nuclear stellar disc (NSD) is, together with the nuclear star cluster (NSC) and the central massive black hole, one of the main components in the central parts of our Milky Way. However, until recently, only few studies of the stellar content of the NSD have been obtained due to extreme extinction and stellar crowding. With a dedicated KMOS (VLT, ESO) spectroscopic survey, we study the kinematics and global metallicities of the NSD based on the observations of K/M giant stars. We trace radial velocities and metallicities which were derived based on spectral indices (Na I and CO) along the NSD and compare those with a Galactic Bulge sample of APOGEE (DR16) and data from the NSC. We find that the metallicity distribution function and the fraction of metal-rich and metal-poor stars in the NSD are different from the corresponding distributions and ratios of the NSC and the Galactic Bulge. By tracing the velocity dispersion as a function of metallicity, we clearly see that the NSD is kinematically cool and that the velocity dispersion decreases with increasing metallicity contrary to the inner Bulge sample of APOGEE ($\rm |b| < 4^{o}$). Using molecular gas tracers ($\rm H_{2}CO$, CO(4-3)) of the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) we find an astonishing agreement between the gas rotation and the rotation of the metal-rich population indicating that the metal-rich stars could have formed from gas in the CMZ. On the other hand, the metal-poor stars show a much slower rotation profile with signs of counter-rotation indicating a different origin of these stars. Coupling kinematics with global metallicities, our results demonstrate that the NSD is chemically and kinematically distinct with respect to the inner Bulge indicating a different formation scenario., Comment: accepted for publication in A\&A

Leo I is considered one of the youngest dwarf spheroidals (dSph) in the Local Group. Its isolation, extended star formation history (SFH), and recent perigalacticon passage (~1 Gyr ago) make Leo~I one of the most interesting nearby stellar systems. Here, we analyse deep photometric Hubble Space Telescope data via colour-magnitude diagram fitting techniques to study its global and radially-resolved SFH. We find global star formation enhancements in Leo I ~13, 5.5, 2.0, and 1.0 Gyr ago, after which it was substantially quenched. Within the context of previous works focused on Leo I, we interpret the most ancient and the youngest ones as being linked to an early formation (surviving reionisation) and the latest perigalacticon passage (transition from dIrr to dSph), respectively. We clearly identify the presence of very metal poor stars ([Fe/H]~-2) ageing ~5-6 and ~13 Gyr old. We speculate with the possibility that this metal-poor population in Leo I is related to the merging with a low mass system (possibly an ultra-faint dwarf). This event would have triggered star formation (peak of star formation ~5.5 Gyr ago) and accumulated old, metal poor stars from the accreted system in LeoI. Some of the stars born during this event would also form from accreted gas of low-metallicity (giving rise to the 5-6 Gyr low-metallicity tail). Given the intensity and extension of the 2.0 Gyr burst, we hypothesise that this enhancement could also have an external origin. Despite the quenching of star formation around 1 Gyr ago (most probably induced by ram pressure stripping with the Milky Way halo at pericentre), we report the existence of stars as young as 300-500 Myr. We also distinguish two clear spatial regions: the inner ~190 pc presents an homogeneous stellar content (size of the gaseous star forming disc in LeoI from ~4.5 to 1 Gyr ago), whereas the outer regions display a clear positive age gradient., Comment: 20 pages, 11+5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) have numerous potential applications in ultrathin electronics and photonics. The exposure of TMD based devices to light generates photo-carriers resulting in an enhanced conductivity, which can be effectively used, e.g., in photodetectors. If the photo-enhanced conductivity persists after removal of the irradiation, the effect is known as persistent photoconductivity (PPC). Here we show that ultraviolet light (wavelength = 365 nm) exposure induces an extremely long-living giant PPC (GPPC) in monolayer MoS2 (ML-MoS2) field-effect transistors (FET) with a time constant of ~30 days. Furthermore, this effect leads to a large enhancement of the conductivity up to a factor of 107. In contrast to previous studies in which the origin of the PPC was attributed to extrinsic reasons such as trapped charges in the substrate or adsorbates, we unambiguously show that the GPPC arises mainly from the intrinsic properties of ML-MoS2 such as lattice defects that induce a large amount of localized states in the forbidden gap. This finding is supported by a detailed experimental and theoretical study of the electric transport in TMD based FETs as well as by characterization of ML-MoS2 with scanning tunneling spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and photoluminescence measurements. The obtained results provide a basis towards the defect-based engineering of the electronic and optical properties of TMDs for device applications., Comment: 25 pages, 5 figures

The Galactic Center region, including the nuclear disk, has until recently been largely avoided in chemical census studies because of extreme extinction and stellar crowding. Making use of the latest APOGEE data release (DR16), we are able for the first time to study cool AGB stars and supergiants in this region. The stellar parameters of five known AGB stars and one supergiant star (VR 5-7) show that their location is well above the tip of the RGB.We study metallicities of 157 M giants situated within 150 pc of the Galactic center from observations obtained by the APOGEE survey with reliable stellar parameters from the APOGEE/ASPCAP pipeline making use of the cool star grid down to 3200 K. Distances, interstellar extinction values, and radial velocities were checked to confirm that these stars are indeed situated in the Galactic Center region. We detect a clear bimodal structure in the metallicity distribution function, with a dominant metal-rich peak of [Fe/H] ~ +0.3 dex and a metal-poor peak around [Fe/H]= -0.5 dex, which is 0.2 dex poorer than Baade's Window. The alpha-elements Mg, Si, Ca, and O show a similar trend to the Galactic Bulge. The metal-poor component is enhanced in the alpha-elements, suggesting that this population could be associated with the classical bulge and a fast formation scenario. We find a clear signature of a rotating nuclear stellar disk and a significant fraction of high velocity stars with $\rm v_{gal} > 300\,km/s$; the metal-rich stars show a much higher rotation velocity ($\rm \sim 200\,km/s$) with respect to the metal-poor stars ($\rm \sim 140\,km/s$). The chemical abundances as well as the metallicity distribution function suggest that the nuclear stellar disc and the nuclear star cluster show distinct chemical signatures and might be formed differently., Comment: 12 pages, accepted for Astronomy&Astrophysics

We present a detailed study of the composition of 20 M giants in the Galactic center with 15 of them confirmed to be in the Nuclear Star Cluster. As a control sample we have also observed 7 M giants in the Milky Way Disk with similar stellar parameters. All 27 stars are observed using the NIRSPEC spectograph on the KECK II telescope in the K-band at a resolving power of R=23,000. We report the first silicon abundance trends versus [Fe/H] for stars in the Galactic center. While finding a disk/bulge like trend at subsolar metallicities, we find that [Si/Fe] is enhanced at supersolar metallicities. We speculate on possible enrichment scenarios to explain such a trend. However, the sample size is modest and the result needs to be confirmed by additional measurements of silicon and other \textalpha-elements. We present a new derivation of the star formation history (SFH) of the dSph galaxy Fornax in two central regions, characterised by unprecedented precision and age resolution. It reveals that star formation has proceeded in sharp bursts separated by periods of low-level or quiescent activity. The SFH was derived through colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) fitting of two extremely deep Hubble Space Telescope CMDs, sampling the centre and one core radius. The attained age resolution allowed us to single out a major star formation episode at early times, a second strong burst $4.6\pm0.4$ Gyr ago and recent intermittent episodes $\sim2-0.2$ Gyr ago. Detailed testing with mock stellar populations was used to estimate the duration of the main bursts and study the occurrence of low-level star formation between them. The SFHs in both regions show common features, with activity at the same epochs and similar age-metallicity relationship. However, clear indications of a spatial gradient were also found, with mean age increasing with radius and star formation episodes being more prolonged in the centre. While some galaxy evolution models predict bursty SFHs in dwarf galaxies and thus a secular origin of the observed SFH cannot be excluded in Fornax, other evidence points to possible mergers or interactions as the cause of its bursty SFH. The Milky Way nuclear star cluster (MWNSC) is a crucial laboratory for studying the galactic nuclei of other galaxies, but its properties have not been determined unambiguously until now. Aims. We aim to study the size and spatial structure of the MWNSC. Methods. This study uses data and methods that address potential shortcomings of previous studies on the topic. We use $0.2''$ angular resolution $K_{s}$ data to create a stellar density map in the central $86.4$pc x $21$pc at the Galactic center. We include data from selected adaptive-optics-assisted images obtained for the inner parsecs. In addition, we use IRAC/Spitzer mid-infrared (MIR) images. We model the Galactic bulge and the nuclear stellar disk in order to subtract them from the MWNSC. Finally, we fit a S\'ersic model to the MWNSC and investigate its symmetry. Results. Our results are consistent with previous work. The MWNSC is flattened with an axis ratio of $q=0.71 \pm0.10$, an effective radius of $R_{e}=(5.1 \pm1.0)$ pc, and a S\'ersic index of $n=2.2 \pm0.7$. Its major axis may be tilted out of the Galactic plane by up to $-10$ degrees. The distribution of the giants brighter than the Red Clump (RC) is found to be significantly flatter than the distribution of the faint stars. We investigate the 3D structure of the central stellar cusp using our results on the MWNSC structure on large scales to constrain the deprojection of the measured stellar surface number density, obtaining a value of the 3D inner power law of $\gamma=1.38\pm0.06_{sys}\pm0.01_{stat}$. Conclusions. The MWNSC shares its main properties with other extragalactic NSCs found in spiral galaxies. The differences in the structure between bright giants and RC stars might be related to the existence of not completely mixed populations of different ages. This may hint at recent growth of the MWNSC through star formation or cluster accretion., Comment: 20 pages

We use Gaia DR2 systemic proper motions of 45 satellite galaxies to constrain the mass of the Milky Way using the scale free mass estimator of Watkins et al. (2010). We first determine the anisotropy parameter $\beta$, and the tracer satellites' radial density index $\gamma$ to be $\beta$=$-0.67^{+0.45}_{-0.62}$ and $\gamma=2.11\pm0.23$. When we exclude possible former satellites of the Large Magellanic Cloud, the anisotropy changes to $\beta$=$-0.21^{+0.37}_{-0.51}$. We find that the index of the Milky Way's gravitational potential $\alpha$, which is dependent on the mass itself, is the parameter with the largest impact on the mass determination. Via comparison with cosmological simulations of Milky Way-like galaxies, we carried out a detailed analysis of the estimation of the observational uncertainties and their impact on the mass estimator. We found that the mass estimator is biased when applied naively to the satellites of simulated Milky Way halos. Correcting for this bias, we obtain for our Galaxy a mass of $0.58^{+0.15}_{-0.14}\times10^{12}$M$_\odot$ within 64 kpc, as computed from the inner half of our observational sample, and $1.43^{+0.35}_{-0.32}\times10^{12}$M$_\odot$ within 273 kpc, from the full sample; this latter value extrapolates to a virial mass of $M_\mathrm{vir\,\Delta=97}$=$1.51^{+0.45}_{-0.40} \times 10^{12}M_{\odot}$ corresponding to a virial radius of R$_\mathrm{vir}$=$308\pm29$ kpc. A wealth of tiny galaxies populates the surroundings of the Milky Way. Some of these objects might have their origin as former satellites of the Large Magellanic Cloud. Examples of the importance of understanding how many systems are genuine satellites of the MW or the LMC are the implications that the number and mass function of satellites have for dark matter theories and the treatment of baryonic physics in simulations of structure formation. Here we aim at deriving the bulk motions and estimates of the internal velocity dispersion and metallicity properties in four recently discovered distant southern dwarf galaxy candidates, Columba I, Reticulum III, Phoenix II and Horologium II. We combine Gaia DR2 astrometric measurements, photometry and new FLAMES spectroscopic data in the region of the CaII triplet lines; such combination is essential for finding potential member stars in these low luminosity systems. We find very likely member stars in all four satellites and are able to determine (or place limits on) the systems bulk motions and average internal properties. The systems are found to be very metal-poor, in agreement with dwarf galaxies and dwarf galaxy candidates of similar luminosity. The only system that we can place firmly in the category of dwarf galaxies is Phx II, given its resolved large velocity dispersion ($9.5_{-4.4}^{+6.8}$ km/s) and intrinsic metallicity spread (0.33 dex). Also for Col I we measure a clear metallicity spread. The orbital pole of Phx II is well constrained and close to that of the LMC, suggesting a prior association. The uncertainty on the orbital poles of the other systems are presently very large, so that an association cannot be excluded, apart from Col I. Using the numbers of potential former satellites of the LMC identified here and in the literature, we obtain for the LMC a dark matter mass of M$_{200}=1.9_{-0.9}^{+1.3}\times10^{11}$ M$_\odot$., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

A proper understanding of the Milky Way (MW) dwarf galaxies in a cosmological context requires knowledge of their 3D velocities and orbits. However, proper motion (PM) measurements have generally been of limited accuracy and available only for more massive dwarfs. We therefore present a new study of the kinematics of the MW dwarf galaxies. We use the Gaia DR2 for those dwarfs that have been spectroscopically observed in the literature. We derive systemic PMs for 39 galaxies and galaxy candidates out to 420 kpc, and generally find good consistency for the subset with measurements available from other studies. We derive the implied Galactocentric velocities, and calculate orbits in canonical MW halo potentials of "low" ($0.8 \times 10^{12} M_\odot$) and "high" mass ($1.6 \times 10^{12} M_\odot$). Comparison of the distributions of orbital apocenters and 3D velocities to the halo virial radius and escape velocity, respectively, suggests that the satellite kinematics are best explained in the high-mass halo. Tuc III, Crater II, and additional candidates have orbital pericenters small enough to imply significant tidal influences. Relevant to the missing satellite problem, the fact that fewer galaxies are observed to be near apocenter than near pericenter implies that there must be a population of distant dwarf galaxies yet to be discovered. Of the 39 dwarfs: 12 have orbital poles that do not align with the MW plane of satellites (given reasonable assumptions about its intrinsic thickness); 10 have insufficient PM accuracy to establish whether they align; and 17 satellites align, of which 11 are co-orbiting and (somewhat surprisingly, in view of prior knowledge) 6 are counter-orbiting. We present the first proper motion measurement for an ultra-faint dwarf spheroidal galaxy, Segue 1, using SDSS and LBC data as the first and second epochs separated by a baseline of $\sim 10$ years. We obtain a motion of $\mu_{\alpha}\,\cos(\delta) = -0.37\pm0.57$ mas yr$^{-1}$ and $\mu_{\delta} =-3.39\pm0.58$ mas yr$^{-1}$. Combining this with the known line-of-sight velocity, this corresponds to a Galactocentric V$_\mathrm{rad}=84\pm9$ and V$_\mathrm{tan}=164^{+66}_{-55}$ km s$^{-1}$. Applying Milky Way halo masses between 0.8 to 1.6$\times 10^{12}$ M$_\odot$ results in an apocenter at 33.9$^{+21.7}_{-7.4}$ kpc and pericenter at 15.4$^{+10.1}_{-9.0}$ kpc from the Galactic center, indicating Segue~1 is rather tightly bound to the Milky Way. Since neither the orbital pole of Segue 1 nor its distance to the Milky Way is similar to the more massive classical dwarfs, it is very unlikely that Segue 1 was once a satellite of a massive known galaxy. Using cosmological zoom-in simulations of Milky Way-mass galaxies, we identify subhalos on similar orbits as Segue~1, which imply the following orbital properties: a median first infall 8.1$^{+3.6}_{-4.3}$ Gyrs ago, a median of 4 pericentric passages since then and a pericenter of 22.8$^{+4.7}_{-4.8}$ kpc. This is slightly larger than the pericenter derived directly from Segue 1 and Milky Way parameters, because galaxies with a small pericenter are more likely to be destroyed. Of the surviving subhalo analogs only 27\% were previously a satellite of a more massive dwarf galaxy (that is now destroyed), thus Segue 1 is more likely to have been accreted on its own., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, accepted by ApJ

We report the first high spectral resolution study of 17 M giants kinematically confirmed to lie within a few parsecs of the Galactic Center, using R=24,000 spectroscopy from Keck/NIRSPEC and a new linelist for the infrared K band. We consider their luminosities and kinematics, which classify these stars as members of the older stellar population and the central cluster. We find a median metallicity of <[Fe/H]>=-0.16 and a large spread from approximately -0.3 to +0.3 (quartiles). We find that the highest metallicities are [Fe/H]<+0.6, with most of the stars being at or below the Solar iron abundance. The abundances and the abundance distribution strongly resembles that of the Galactic bulge rather than disk or halo; in our small sample we find no statistical evidence for a dependence of velocity dispersion on metallicity., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in AJ

Owing to their extreme crowding and high and variable extinction, stars in the Galactic Bulge, within +-2 degrees of the Galactic plane, and especially those in the Nuclear Star Cluster, have only rarely been targeted for an analyses of their detailed abundances. There is also some disagreement about the high end of the abundance scale for these stars. It is now possible to obtain high dispersion, high S/N spectra in the infrared K band (2.0-2.4 microns) for these giants; we report our progress at Keck and VLT in using these spectra to infer the composition of this stellar population., Comment: 4 pages, contributed talk at the IAU Symposium 334 "Rediscovering our Galaxy" in Potsdam, July 10-14, 2017

We report the first results from our program to examine the metallicity distribution of the Milky Way nuclear star cluster connected to SgrA*, with the goal of inferring the star formation and enrichment history of this system, as well as its connection and relationship with the central 100 pc of the bulge/bar system. We present the first high resolution (R~24,000), detailed abundance analysis of a K=10.2 metal-poor, alpha-enhanced red giant projected at 1.5 pc from the Galactic Center, using NIRSPEC on Keck II. A careful analysis of the dynamics and color of the star locates it at about 26 pc line-of-sight distance in front of the nuclear cluster. It probably belongs to one of the nuclear components (cluster or disk), not to the bar-bulge or classical disk. A detailed spectroscopic synthesis, using a new linelist in the K band, finds [Fe/H]~-1.0 and [alpha/Fe]~+0.4, consistent with stars of similar metallicity in the bulge. As known giants with comparable [Fe/H] and alpha enhancement are old, we conclude that this star is most likely to be a representative of the ~10 Gyr old population. This is also the most metal poor confirmed red giant yet discovered in vicinity of the nuclear cluster of the Galactic Center. We consider recent reports in the literature of a surprisingly large number of metal poor giants in the Galactic Center, but the reported gravities of log g ~4 for these stars calls into question their reported metallicities., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The inner Galactic Bulge has, until recently, been avoided in chemical evolution studies due to extreme extinction and stellar crowding. Large, near-IR spectroscopic surveys, such as APOGEE, allow for the first time the measurement of metallicities in the inner region of our Galaxy. We study metallicities of 33 K/M giants situated in the Galactic Center region from observations obtained with the APOGEE survey. We selected K/M giants with reliable stellar parameters from the APOGEE/ASPCAP pipeline. Distances, interstellar extinction values, and radial velocities were checked to confirm that these stars are indeed situated in the inner Galactic Bulge. We find a metal-rich population centered at [M/H] = +0.4 dex, in agreement with earlier studies of other bulge regions, but also a peak at low metallicity around $\rm [M/H] = -1.0\,dex$, suggesting the presence of a metal-poor population which has not previously been detected in the central region. Our results indicate a dominant metal-rich population with a metal-poor component that is enhanced in the $\alpha$-elements. Nonlocality is arguably one of the most fundamental and counterintuitive aspects of quantum theory. Nonlocal correlations could, however, be even more nonlocal than quantum theory allows, while still complying with basic physical principles such as no-signaling. So why is quantum mechanics not as nonlocal as it could be? Are there other physical or information-theoretic principles which prohibit this? So far, the proposed answers to this question have been only partially successful, partly because they are lacking genuinely multipartite formulations. In Nat. Comm. 4, 2263 (2013) we introduced the principle of Local Orthogonality (LO), an intrinsically multipartite principle which is satisfied by quantum mechanics but is violated by non-physical correlations. Here we further explore the LO principle, presenting new results and explaining some of its subtleties. In particular, we show that the set of no-signaling boxes satisfying LO is closed under wirings, present a classification of all LO inequalities in certain scenarios, show that all extremal tripartite boxes with two binary measurements per party violate LO, and explain the connection between LO inequalities and unextendible product bases., Comment: Typos corrected; data files uploaded

The origin of the dense gas cloud G2 discovered in the Galactic Center (Gillessen et al. 2012) is still a debated puzzle. G2 might be a diffuse cloud or the result of an outflow from an invisible star embedded in it. We present here detailed simulations of the evolution of winds on G2's orbit. We find that the hydrodynamic interaction with the hot atmosphere present in the Galactic Center and the extreme gravitational field of the supermassive black hole must be taken in account when modeling such a source scenario. A long-term spectroscopic and photometric survey of the most luminous and massive stars in the vicinity of the super-massive black hole Sgr A* revealed two new binaries; a long-period Ofpe/WN9 binary, GCIRS 16NE, with a modest eccentricity of 0.3 and a period of 224 days and an eclipsing Wolf-Rayet binary with a period of 2.3 days. Together with the already identified binary GCIRS 16SW, there are now three confirmed OB/WR binaries in the inner 0.2\,pc of the Galactic Center. Using radial velocity change upper limits, we were able to constrain the spectroscopic binary fraction in the Galactic Center to $F_{\rm SB}=0.27^{+0.29}_{-0.19}$ at a confidence level of 95%, a massive binary fraction similar to that observed in dense clusters. The fraction of eclipsing binaries with photometric amplitudes $\Delta m>0.4$ is $F^{\rm GC}_{\rm EB}=3\pm2%$, which is consistent with local OB star clusters ($F_{\rm EB}=1%$). We find that the interaction with the ambient medium and with the extreme gravitational field of the supermassive black hole in the Galactic Center must be taken into account for such a source scenario. The thermal pressure of the hot and dense atmosphere confines the wind, while its ram pressure shapes it via stripping along the orbit, with the details depending on the wind parameters. Tidal forces squeeze the wind near pericenter, reducing it to a thin and elongated filament. We also find that in this scenario most of the Br\gamma\ luminosity is expected to come from the densest part of the wind, which has a highly filamentary structure with low filling factor. The observations can be best matched by a mass outflow rate of Mdot,w=8.8 x 10^{-8} Msun/yr and a wind velocity of vw = 50 km/s. The former is able to explain the detected signal of G2 in the position-velocity-diagram of the year 2008.5 and 2011.5 data. The latter can account for both, G2's signal as well as the fainter extended tail-like structure G2t seen at larger distances to the black hole and smaller velocities. From these first idealised simulations we expect a rise of the current activity of Sgr A* shortly after the closest approach and a constant feeding through a nozzle-like structure over a long period. In recent years, the use of information principles to understand quantum correlations has been very successful. Unfortunately, all principles considered so far have a bipartite formulation, but intrinsically multipartite principles, yet to be discovered, are necessary for reproducing quantum correlations. Here, we introduce local orthogonality, an intrinsically multipartite principle stating that events involving different outcomes of the same local measurement must be exclusive, or orthogonal. We prove that it is equivalent to no-signaling in the bipartite scenario but more restrictive for more than two parties. By exploiting this non-equivalence, it is then demonstrated that some bipartite supra-quantum correlations do violate local orthogonality when distributed among several parties. Finally, we show how its multipartite character allows revealing the non-quantumness of correlations for which any bipartite principle fails. We present new observations of the recently discovered gas cloud G2 currently falling towards the massive black hole in the Galactic Center. The new data confirm that G2 is on a highly elliptical orbit with a predicted pericenter passage mid 2013. The updated orbit has an even larger eccentricity of 0.966, an epoch of pericenter two months later than estimated before, and a nominal minimum distance of 2200 Schwarzschild radii only. The velocity gradient of G2 has developed further to 600 km/s FWHM in summer 2012. We also detect the tail of similar total flux and on the same orbit as G2 along the trajectory at high significance. No hydrodynamic effects are detected yet, since the simple model of a tidally shearing gas cloud still describes the data very well. The flux of G2 has not changed by more than 10% between 2008 and 2012, disfavoring models where additional gas from a reservoir is released to the disrupting diffuse gas component., Comment: submitted to ApJ

This favors the Spherical Shell Scenario and might be a severe problem for the Compact Cloud as well as the so-called Compact Source Scenario. From these first idealized simulations we expect a roughly constant feeding of the supermassive black hole through a nozzle-like structure over a long period, starting shortly after the closest approach in 2013.51 for the Compact Cloud. If the matter accretes in the hot accretion mode, we do not expect a significant boost of the current activity of Sgr A* for the Compact Cloud model, but a boost of the average infrared and X-ray luminosity by roughly a factor of 80 for the Spherical Shell scenario with order of magnitude variations on a timescale of a few months. Measurements of stellar orbits provide compelling evidence that the compact radio source Sagittarius A* at the Galactic Centre is a black hole four million times the mass of the Sun. With the exception of modest X-ray and infrared flares, Sgr A* is surprisingly faint, suggesting that the accretion rate and radiation efficiency near the event horizon are currently very low. Here we report the presence of a dense gas cloud approximately three times the mass of Earth that is falling into the accretion zone of Sgr A*. Our observations tightly constrain the cloud's orbit to be highly eccentric, with an innermost radius of approach of only ~3,100 times the event horizon that will be reached in 2013. Over the past three years the cloud has begun to disrupt, probably mainly through tidal shearing arising from the black hole's gravitational force. The cloud's dynamic evolution and radiation in the next few years will probe the properties of the accretion flow and the feeding processes of the super-massive black hole. The kilo-electronvolt X-ray emission of Sgr A* may brighten significantly when the cloud reaches pericentre. There may also be a giant radiation flare several years from now if the cloud breaks up and its fragments feed gas into the central accretion zone., Comment: in press at Nature
