Abstract

A major challenge for the realization of intelligent robots is to supply them with cognitive abilities in order to allow ordinary users to program them easily and intuitively. One way of such programming is teaching work tasks by interactive demonstration. To make this effective and convenient for the user, the machine must be capable to establish a common focus of attention and be able to use and integrate spoken instructions, visual perceptions, and non-verbal clues like gestural commands. We report progress in building a hybrid architecture that combines statistical methods, neural networks, and finite state machines into an integrated system for instructing grasping tasks by man-machine interaction. The system combines the GRAVIS-robot for visual attention and gestural instruction with an intelligent interface for speech recognition and linguistic interpretation, and an modality fusion module to allow multi-modal task-oriented man-machine communication with respect to dextrous robot manipulation of objects., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

33. Technics Lifeless and Technics Alive: Activity Without and With Content

Abstract

How did so much of contemporary technics become so disappointing, so deadening? How is technics being thought, and worked with, to enliven? What different assemblages and principles are involved? This chapter begins in sympathy with Michel Serres’ “aggrieved shame” and then moves to Wendy Hui Kyong Chun's discussion of an "undeadness" at the heart of technical culture. After summarising more positive pathways in interaction design and thinking, I argue that a series of Pavlovist variations on powerlessness still inhabits contemporary technics. This combines with a series of calculative assemblages to form a calculative-behavioural assemblage, both in technics generally, and in what have become "cognition" and computing in recent culture. These assemblages in fact have three aspects: actual, directly material assemblages of technologies and processes; abstract "agencements", for example, a generalised Pavlovism that infuses subsequent events; and diagrams, meant to intervene in both. I then suggest principles of escape towards other kinds of relations between technics and worlds. These relations affirm mutual care as well as mutual powers. They would be immanently attentive to the complexity and variability of the world as event.

38. Antecedents and Consequences of Outward Emotional Reactions in Table Tennis

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to shed light on the behavioral component of emotions by investigating antecedents and consequences of outward emotional reactions during table tennis competitions. With regards to the antecedents of outward emotional reactions, in line with appraisal theories, we considered the importance and the controllability of the situation as two important constructs. Fifteen table tennis matches, involving in total 21 players (7 females) with a mean age of 16.71 (SD = 0.70), were video recorded during the finals of the youth National Championship in Greece. Based on the footage, outward emotional reactions after every point were classified as neutral, positive, or negative. Situational factors in relation to the scoring system, bearing the importance and the controllability of the situation, were formed to assess antecedents of outward emotional reactions. To measure the consequences of outward emotional reactions, the impact on the outcome of the next point was assessed. Generalized linear models with a logit link were computed separately for positive outward emotional reactions after having won a point and negative outward emotional reactions after having lost a point. In general, the results show that while situational factors bearing the importance of the situation could predict positive and negative outward emotional reactions, the effects of situational factors bearing the controllability of the situation were less conclusive. In addition, the results also showed interactive effects between the two constructs for both positive and negative outward emotional reactions. With regard to the consequences of outward emotional reactions, negative and positive outward emotional reactions could not predict the outcome of the next point. 40. Roll circulations in the convective region of a simulated squall line

Abstract

In high-resolution numerical simulations (using horizontal grid spacing less than ~1 km), the convective region of squall lines will sometimes overturn as quasi-horizontal convective rolls. The authors study one case in detail using output from a simulation with 125-m grid spacing. The rolls have an average spacing of 3 km and are aligned parallel to the vertical wind shear. Individual convective cells often have long-lived, undiluted cores that entrain primarily on the sides of the rolls (i.e., between the roll updraft and downdraft). The following set of conditions is proposed for obtaining roll overturning: the formation of a moist absolutely unstable layer (MAUL); vertical shear of the horizontal wind within the MAUL; an environment without large-amplitude perturbations; and quasi-horizontal flow over the squall line's surface-based cold pool. Further insight is gained through a series of more idealized simulations wherein a specified MAUL is perturbed by analytic potential temperature perturbations. These simulations confirm classical studies based on linear analysis because the smallest perturbations grow fastest (with the exception of the very smallest scales that are affected by diffusion). The results also confirm that, with shear, updrafts oriented across the shear vector are inhibited by the shear. An explanation for the ~3-km roll spacing also emerges from these simulations. The argument focuses on the perturbations that exist in the cold pool underneath the MAUL; they induce pressure fields that extend upward into the overlying MAUL. The perturbations with large horizontal scale have pressure fields that extend farther vertically and with a greater amplitude, and thus are more effective at initiating motions in the overlying MAUL. The convective scale that ultimately emerges within the MAUL is somewhere between two scales, whereby comparatively large scales are perturbed more strongly by perturbations in the cold pool, but the comparatively small scales grow faster.
