We develop an engineered microwave environment for coupling high Q superconducting resonators to quantum dots using a multilayer fabrication stack for the dot control wiring. Analytic and numerical models are presented to understand how parasitic capacitive coupling to the dot bias leads can result in microwave energy leakage and low resonator quality factors. We show that by controlling the characteristic impedance of the dot bias wiring, on-chip quality factors of 8140 can be attained without the addition of explicit filtering. Using this approach we demonstrate single electron occupation in double and triple dots detected via dipole or quadrupole coupling to a superconducting resonator. Additionally, by using multilayer fabrication we are able to improve ground plane integrity and keep microwave crosstalk below -20 dB out to 18 GHz while maintaining high wire density which will be necessary for future circuit quantum electrodyanmics (cQED) quantum dot processors., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

A fundamental design challenge for quantum dot spin qubits is to extend the strength and range of qubit interactions while suppressing their coupling to the environment, since both effects have electrical origins. Key tools include the ability to retune the qubits, to take advantage of physical resources in different operating regimes, and to access optimal working points, or "sweet spots," where dephasing is minimized. Here, we explore an important, new resource for singlet-triplet qubits: a transverse sweet spot (TSS) that enables (i) direct transitions between qubit states, (ii) a strong, charge-like qubit coupling, and (iii) leading-order protection from electrical fluctuations. Of particular interest is the possibility of transitioning between the TSS and symmetric operating points while remaining continuously protected. This arrangement is ideal for coupling qubits to a microwave cavity, because it combines maximal tunability of the coupling strength with leading-order noise suppression. We perform simulations with $1/f$-type electrical noise, demonstrating that two-qubit gates mediated by a resonator can achieve fidelities $>99$\% under realistic conditions. We study the time-dependent transmission of entanglement entropy through an out-of-equilibrium model interacting device in a quantum transport set-up. The dynamics is performed via the Kadanoff-Baym equations within many-body perturbation theory. The double occupancy $< \hat{n}_{R \uparrow} \hat{n}_{R \downarrow} >$, needed to determine the entanglement entropy, is obtained from the equations of motion of the single-particle Green's function. A remarkable result of our calculations is that $< \hat{n}_{R \uparrow} \hat{n}_{R \downarrow} >$ can become negative, thus not permitting to evaluate the entanglement entropy. This is a shortcoming of approximate, and yet conserving, many-body self-energies. Among the tested perturbation schemes, the $T$-matrix approximation stands out for two reasons: it compares well to exact results in the low density regime and it always provides a non-negative $< \hat{n}_{R \uparrow} \hat{n}_{R \downarrow} >$. We use the Kadanoff-Baym equations within the framework of many-body perturbation theory to study the double occupancies in a Hubbard dimer. The double occupancies are obtained from the equations of motion of the single-particle Green's function. Our calculations show that the approximate double occupancies can become negative. We present in detail a method we recently introduced (PRL. 103, 176404 (2009)) to describe finite systems in and out of equilibrium, where the evolution in time is performed via the Kadanoff-Baym Equations (KBE) within Many-Body Perturbation Theory (MBPT). The main property we analyze is the time-dependent density. We also study is the exchange-correlation potential of TDDFT, obtained via reverse engineering from the time-dependent density. Our systems consist of small, strongly correlated clusters, described by a Hubbard Hamiltonian within the Hartree-Fock, second Born, GW and T-matrix approximations. We compare the results from the KBE dynamics to those from exact numerical solutions. The outcome of our comparisons is that, among the many-body schemes considered, the T-matrix approximation is overall superior at all electron densities. Such comparisons permit a general assessment of the whole idea of applying MBPT, in the KBE sense, to finite systems. A striking outcome of our analysis is that when the system evolves under a strong external field, the KBE develop a steady-state solution as a consequence of a correlation-induced damping. This damping is present both in isolated (finite) systems, where it is purely artificial, as well as in clusters contacted to (infinite) macroscopic leads. To illustrate this point we present selected results for a system coupled to contacts within the T-matrix and second Born approximation. The extensive characterization we performed indicates that this behavior is present whenever approximate self energies, based upon infinite partial summations, are used. A second important result is that, for isolated clusters, the steady state reached is not unique but depends on how one switches on the external field. We report integrated charge sensing measurements on a Si/SiGe double quantum dot. The quantum dot is shown to be tunable from a single, large dot to a well-isolated double dot. Charge sensing measurements enable the extraction of the tunnel coupling, t, between the quantum dots as a function of the voltage on the top gates defining the device. Control of the voltage on a single such gate tunes the barrier separating the two dots. The measured tunnel coupling is an exponential function of the gate voltage. Quantum fluctuation of the energy is studied for an ultracold gas of interacting fermions trapped in a three-dimensional potential. Periodic-orbit theory is explored, and energy fluctuations are studied versus particle number for generic regular and chaotic systems, as well for a system defined by a harmonic confinement potential. Spin blockade occurs when an electron is unable to access an energetically favorable path through a quantum dot due to spin conservation, resulting in a blockade of the current through the dot. Spin blockade is the basis of a number of recent advances in spintronics, including the measurement and the manipulation of individual electron spins. We report measurements of the spin blockade regime in a silicon double quantum dot, revealing a complementary phenomenon: lifetime-enhanced transport. We argue that our observations arise because the decay times for electron spins in silicon are long, enabling the electron to maintain its spin throughout its transit across the quantum dot and access fast paths that exist in some spin channels but not in others. We measured magnetization, M, of a twin-aligned single crystal of YBa2Cu 3Ox (YBaCuO), with Tc = 91 K, as a function of temperature, T, and magnetic field, H, with H applied along the ab planes. Isothermal M-vs.-H and M-vs.-time curves were obtained with H applied parallel and perpendicular to the twin boundary, TB, direction. M-vs.-H curves exhibited two minimums below 38 K, which resembled similar curves that have been obtained in YBaCuO for H parallel to c axis. Above 12 K, the field positions of the minimums for H||TB and HperpTB were quite similar. Below 12 K, the position of the second minimum, Hmin, occurred at a higher field value with H||TB. Below 6 K, only one minimum appeared for both field directions. At low temperatures, these minimums in the M-vs.-H curves produced maximums in the critical current. It was determined that vortex lines were expelled more easily for H||TB than for HperpTB, and, therefore, below a certain field value, that Jc(HperpTB) was larger than Jc(H||TB) . At T<12 K with H||TB, the relaxation rate for flux lines leaving the crystal was found to be different from that for flux entering the crystal. The value of the dynamic critical exponent $z$ is studied for two-dimensional superconducting, superfluid, and Josephson Junction array systems in zero magnetic field via the Fisher-Fisher-Huse dynamic scaling. We find $z\simeq5.6\pm0.3$, a relatively large value indicative of non-diffusive dynamics. Universality of the scaling function is tested and confirmed for the thinnest samples. We discuss the validity of the dynamic scaling analysis as well as the previous studies of the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Berezinskii transition in these systems, the results of which seem to be consistent with simple diffusion ($z=2$).
