Background: Falls are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among older adults in the United States. Current fall prevention interventions rely on provider referral or enrollment during inpatient admissions and require engagement and independence of the patient. Community emergency medical services (CEMS) are a unique opportunity to rapidly identify older adults at risk for falls and provide proactive fall prevention interventions in the home. We describe the demographics and treatment characteristics of the older adult population most likely to benefit from these interventions., Materials and Methods: We linked 2019 Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project Massachusetts State Emergency Department (ED) and State Inpatient Databases with American Hospital Association survey data to query ED encounters and inpatient admissions for adults age ≥55 with ED encounters for fall-related injury between July 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019. Univariable descriptive statistics assessed participant characteristics and bivariable tests of significance compared diagnoses, disposition, and hospital characteristics between older adults with and without an EMS encounter in the six months prior to the presenting fall., Results: Of 66,027 older adults who presented with a fall to a Massachusetts ED in July-December 2019, 7,942 (11%) had a prior encounter with EMS in the preceding six months, most of which included an injury diagnosis (99%). Compared to older adults without previous EMS encounters, those with previous EMS encounters were more often in poorer health (17% vs. 10% with multiple or complex comorbidities, p < 0.001) and of lower socioeconomic status (12% vs. 8% in lowest neighborhood income quartile, p < 0.001; 10% vs. 6% enrolled in Medicaid, p < 0.001) compared to those without a prior EMS encounter., Conclusions: A significant proportion of older adults presenting to the ED with fall related injury have encounters with EMS in the preceding months. In this systematic review, we seek to assess the efficacy and qualitative factors determining success of these programs., Methods: Studies reporting the outcomes of fall prevention interventions delivered by EMS were identified by searching the electronic databases PubMed, Embase, Web of Science Core Collection, CINAHL and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials through 11 July 2023., Results: 35 studies including randomised and non-randomised experimental trials, systematic reviews and qualitative research primarily from Western Europe, the USA, Australia and Canada were included in our analysis. Current fall prevention efforts focus heavily on postfall referral of at-risk community members. CEMS fall prevention interventions reduced all-cause and fall-related emergency department encounters, subsequent falls and EMS calls for lift assist. These interventions also improved patient health-related quality of life, independence with activities of daily living, and secondary health outcomes., Conclusions: CEMS programmes provide an opportunity for direct, proactive fall prevention on the individual level. Background: United States healthcare has increasingly transitioned to outpatient care delivery. The degree to which Academic Medical Centers (AMCs) have been able to shift surgical procedures from inpatient to outpatient settings despite higher patient complexity is unknown., Methods: This observational study used a 20% sample of fee-for-service Medicare beneficiaries age 65 and older undergoing eight elective procedures from 2011 to 2018 to model trends in procedure site (hospital outpatient vs. inpatient) and 30-day standardized Medicare costs, overall and by hospital teaching status., Results: Of the 1,222,845 procedures, 15.9% occurred at AMCs. There was a 2.42% per-year adjusted increase (95% CI 2.39%-2.45%; p < .001) in proportion of outpatient hospital procedures, from 68.9% in 2011 to 85.4% in 2018. Adjusted 30-day standardized costs declined from $18,122 to $14,353, (-$560/year, 95% CI -$573 to -$547; p < .001). Patients at AMCs had more chronic conditions and higher predicted annual mortality. AMCs had a lower proportion of outpatient procedures in all years compared to non-AMCs, a difference that was statistically significant but small in magnitude. AMCs had higher costs compared to non-AMCs and a lesser decline over time (p < .001 for the interaction). AMCs and non-AMCs saw a similar decline in 30-day mortality., Conclusions: There has been a substantial shift toward outpatient procedures among Medicare beneficiaries with a decrease in total 30-day Medicare spending as well as 30-day mortality. Background: Decision-making with regard to the treatment of humeral shaft fractures remains under debate. The cost-effectiveness of these treatment options has yet to be established. This study aims to compare the cost-effectiveness of operative treatment with that of nonoperative treatment of humeral shaft fractures., Methods: We developed a decision tree for treatment options. Surgical costs included the ambulatory surgical fee, physician fee, anesthesia fee, and, in the sensitivity analysis, lost wages during recovery. We used the Current Procedural Terminology codes from the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery to determine physician fees via the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services database. The anesthesia fee was obtained from the national conversion factor and mean operative time for included procedures. We obtained data on mean wages from the U.S. Bureau of Labor and data on weeks missed from a similar study. We reported functional data via the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) scores obtained from existing literature. We used rollback analysis and Monte Carlo simulation to determine the cost-effectiveness of each treatment option, presented in dollars per meaningful change in DASH score, utilizing a $50,000 willingness-to-pay (WTP) threshold., Results: The cost per meaningful change in DASH score for operative treatment was $18,857.97 at the 6-month follow-up and $25,756.36 at the 1-year follow-up, by Monte Carlo simulation. Wage loss-inclusive models revealed values that fall even farther below the WTP threshold, making operative management the more cost-effective treatment option compared with nonoperative treatment in both settings. With an upward variation of the nonoperative union rate to 84.17% in the wage-exclusive model and 89.43% in the wage-inclusive model, nonoperative treatment instead became more cost-effective., Conclusions: Operative management was cost-effective at both 6 months and 1 year, compared with nonoperative treatment, in both models. Operative treatment was found to be even more cost-effective with loss of wages considered, suggesting that an earlier return to baseline function and, thus, return to work are important considerations in making operative treatment the more cost-effective option., Level of Evidence: Economic and Decision Analysis Level III . Background: End-of-life (EOL) costs constitute a substantial portion of healthcare spending in the USA and have been increasing. ACOs may offer an opportunity to improve quality and curtail EOL spending., Objective: To examine whether practices that became ACOs altered spending and utilization at the EOL., Design: Retrospective analysis of Medicare claims., Patients: We assigned patients who died in 2012 and 2015 to an ACO or non-ACO practice. Practices that converted to ACOs in 2013 or 2014 were matched to non-ACOs in the same region. A total of 23,643 ACO patients were matched to 23,643 non-ACO patients., Main Measures: Using a difference-in-differences model, we examined changes in EOL spending and care utilization after ACO implementation., Key Results: The introduction of ACOs did not significantly impact overall spending for patients in the last 6 months of life (difference-in-difference (DID) = $192, 95%CI -$841 to $1125, P = 0.72). Changes in spending did not differ between ACO and non-ACO patients across spending categories (inpatient, outpatient, physician services, skilled nursing, home health, hospice). No differences were seen between ACO and non-ACO patients in rates of ED visits, inpatient admissions, ICU admission, mean healthy days at home, and mean hospice days at 180 and 30 days prior to death. However, non-ACO patients had a significantly greater increase in hospice utilization compared to ACO patients at 180 days (DID P-value = 0.02) and 30 days (DID P-value = 0.01) prior to death., Conclusions: With the exception of hospice care utilization, spending and utilization were not different between ACOs and non-ACO patients at the EOL. Climate change increasingly threatens the ability of the US health care system to deliver safe, effective, and efficient care to the American people. The existing health care system has key vulnerabilities that will grow more problematic as the effects of climate change on Americans' lives become stronger. Thus, health care policy makers must integrate a climate lens as they develop health system interventions. Applying a climate lens means assessing climate change-driven health risks and integrating them into policies and other actions to improve the nation's health. This lens can be applied to rethinking how to take a more population-based approach to health care delivery, prioritize health care system decarbonization and resilience, adapt data infrastructure, develop a climate-ready workforce, and pay for care. Our recommendations outline how to include climate-informed assessments into health care decision making and health policy, ultimately leading to a more resilient and equitable health care system that is better able to meet the needs of patients today and in the future.

Importance: Ambulatory follow-up care is frequently recommended after an emergency department (ED) visit. However, the frequency with which follow-up actually occurs and the degree to which follow-up is associated with postdischarge outcomes is unknown., Objectives: To examine the frequency and variation in ambulatory follow-up among Medicare beneficiaries discharged from US EDs and the association between ambulatory follow-up and postdischarge outcomes., Design, Setting, and Participants: This cohort study of 9 470 626 ED visits to 4728 US EDs among Medicare beneficiaries aged 65 and older from 2011 to 2016 who survived the ED visit and were discharged to home used Kaplan-Meier curves and proportional hazards regression. Data analysis was conducted from December 2019 to July 2020., Exposures: Ambulatory follow-up after discharge from the ED., Main Outcomes and Measures: Postdischarge mortality, subsequent ED visit, or inpatient hospitalization within 30 days of an index ED visit., Results: The study sample consisted of 9 470 626 index outpatient ED visits to 4684 EDs; most visits (5 776 501 [61.0%]) were among women, and the mean (SD) age of patients was 77.3 (8.4) years. In this sample, the cumulative incidence of ambulatory follow-up was 40.5% (3 822 133 patients) at 7 days and 70.8% (6 662 525 patients) at 30 days, after accounting for censoring and for mortality as a competing risk. Characteristics associated with lower rates of ambulatory follow-up included beneficiary Medicaid eligibility (hazard ratio [HR], 0.77; 95% CI, 0.77-0.78; P < .001), Black race (HR, 0.82; 95% CI, 0.81-0.83; P < .001), and treatment at a rural ED (HR, 0.75; 95% CI, 0.73-0.77; P < .001) in the multivariable regression model. Ambulatory follow-up was associated with lower risk of postdischarge mortality (HR, 0.49; 95% CI, 0.49-0.50; P < .001) but higher risk of subsequent inpatient hospitalization (HR, 1.22; 95% CI, 1.21-1.23; P < .001) and ED visits (HR, 1.01; 95% CI, 1.00-1.01; P < .001), adjusting for visit diagnosis, patient demographic characteristics, and chronic conditions., Conclusions and Relevance: In this cohort study of Medicare beneficiaries discharged from the ED, nearly 30% lacked ambulatory follow-up at 30 days, with variation in follow-up rates by patient and hospital characteristics. Having an ambulatory follow-up visit was associated with higher risk of subsequent hospitalization but lower risk of mortality. Ambulatory care access may be an important driver of clinical outcomes after an ED visit.

Being the economic powerhouses of most large medical centers, operating rooms (ORs) require the highest levels of teamwork, communication, and efficiency in order to optimize patient safety and reduce hospital waste. A major component of OR waste comes from unused surgical instrumentation; instruments that are frequently prepared for procedures but are never touched by the surgical team still require a full reprocessing cycle at the conclusion of the case. Based on our own previous successes in the perioperative domain, in this work we detail an initiative that reduces surgical instrumentation waste of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) procedures by placing thoracotomy conversion instrumentation in a standby location and designing a specific instrument kit to be used solely for VATS cases. Our estimates suggest that this initiative will reduce at least 91,800 pounds of unnecessary surgical instrumentation from cycling through our ORs and reprocessing department annually, resulting in increased OR team communication without sacrificing the highest standard of patient safety.

The Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) is merging its older endoscope processing facilities into a single new facility that will enable high-level disinfection of endoscopes for both the ORs and Endoscopy Suite, leveraging economies of scale for improved patient care and optimal use of resources. Finalized resource planning was necessary for the merging of facilities to optimize staffing and make final equipment selections to support the nearly 33,000 annual endoscopy cases. To accomplish this, we employed operations management methodologies, analyzing the physical process flow of scopes throughout the existing Endoscopy Suite and ORs and mapping the future state capacity of the new reprocessing facility. Further, our analysis required the incorporation of historical case and reprocessing volumes in a multi-server queuing model to identify any potential wait times as a result of the new reprocessing cycle. We also performed sensitivity analysis to understand the impact of future case volume growth. We found that our future-state reprocessing facility, given planned capital expenditures for automated endoscope reprocessors (AERs) and pre-processing sinks, could easily accommodate current scope volume well within the necessary pre-cleaning-to-sink reprocessing time limit recommended by manufacturers. Further, in its current planned state, our model suggested that the future endoscope reprocessing suite at MGH could support an increase in volume of at least 90% over the next several years. Our work suggests that with simple mathematical analysis of historic case data, significant changes to a complex perioperative environment can be made with ease while keeping patient safety as the top priority.

In April 2016, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) went live with the Epic electronic health records (EHR) system, replacing a variety of EHRs that previously existed in different departments throughout the hospital. At the time of implementation, the Vocera® Badge Communication System, a wireless hands-free communication device distributed to perioperative team members, had increased perioperative communication flow and efficiency. As a quality improvement effort to better understand communication patterns during an EHR go-live, we monitored our Vocera call volume and user volume before, during and after our go-live. We noticed that call volume and user volume significantly increased during our immediate go-live period and quickly returned to baseline levels. We also noticed that call volume increased during periods of unplanned EHR downtime long after our immediate go-live period. When planning the implementation of a new EHR, leadership must plan for and support this critical communication need at the time of the go-live and must also be aware of these needs during unplanned downtime.

In the hospital, fast and efficient communication among clinicians and other employees is paramount to ensure optimal patient care, workflow efficiency, patient safety and patient comfort. The implementation of the wireless Vocera® Badge, a hands-free wearable device distributed to perioperative team members, has increased communication efficiency across the perioperative environment at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). This quality improvement project, based upon identical pre- and post-implementation surveys, used qualitative and quantitative analysis to determine if and how the Vocera system affected the timeliness of information flow, ease of communication, and operating room noise levels throughout the perioperative environment. Overall, the system increased the speed of information flow and eased communication between coworkers yet was perceived to have raised the overall noise level in and around the operating rooms (ORs). The perceived increase in noise was outweighed by the closed-loop communication between clinicians. Further education of the system's features in regard to speech recognition and privacy along with expected conversation protocol are necessary to ensure hassle-free communication for all staff.

This study determined if a reflective film could theoretically be useful in moderating the rate of heat loss from calves housed in polyethylene hutches during cold weather. An engineering approach was used in which rate of heat loss was modeled using 38-l steel drums filled with body temperature water and covered by fresh calf hide. The reflective film (cover) consisted of aluminized 0.0635 mm low-density olive color polyethylene. The non-reflective olive side was sprayed with flat black paint. Covers were 1.8 × 3 m with the aluminized side facing the hutch. Two of four hutches were either uncovered or had covers across the top and sides. During the night, (mean temperature ± SE -13.6 ± 0.29 °C), the rate of temperature loss was -0.21 °C per 5-min interval over 28 temperature readings in the covered and -0.25 °C in the uncovered (R (2) = 0.99). During the daytime (mean ± SE 14.3 ± 0.52 °C), rate of heat loss was -0.15 °C per 5-min interval over 33 temperature readings in the covered and -0.11 °C in the uncovered (R (2) = 0.99). Reflective film reduced the rate of heat loss during cold nights, but when the sun was shining on the hutches during midday, the uncovered hutches warmed up more and, hence, reduced the rate of heat loss when compared to the covered. Further research is needed on the orientation of hutches in relationship to the sun and with live calves because calves would be able to move into the sun during cold sunny days.

Previous studies have determined that stress causes decreases in feed intake and efficiency in livestock, but the effect of repeated transport on these parameters has not been well studied. This study determined how repeated transport affected calf post-transport behavior, feed intake, ADG, and feed conversion. Thirty-six 4-mo-old Holstein steer calves were housed in groups of 6 with each group randomly assigned to either transport or control treatments. Each calf was assigned to an individual Calan gate feeder and feed intake was recorded daily. Transport calves were transported for 6 h in their groups in a 7.3 by 2.4 m gooseneck trailer divided into 3 compartments, at an average density of 0.87 m/calf, every 7 d for 5 consecutive weeks. After return to their home pens, behavior was recorded for transported calves at 5-min intervals for 1 h. Calf ADG and feed conversion were analyzed in a mixed model ANOVA, whereas feed intake was analyzed as a repeated measure in a mixed model ANOVA. Post-transport, calves followed a pattern of drinking, eating, and then lying down. The highest (82 ± 5% calves) and lowest (0 ± 5% calves) incidences of eating behavior occurred 10 and 60 min post-transport, respectively. Control calves had a higher feed intake than transported calves overall (7.29 ± 0.22 kg for control and 6.91 ± 0.21 kg for transport; = 0.01), for the feeding posttreatment (6.78 ± 0.27 kg for control and 6.01 ± 0.28 kg for transport; = 0.007), and the day after treatment (7.83 ± 0.23 kg for control and 7.08 ± 0.15 kg for transport; = 0.02). Feed intake for the feeding post-transport for transport calves significantly decreased after the second transport but increased with each successive transport ( < 0.0001). Overall, control calves had higher ADG than transported calves (1.34 ± 0.13 kg/d for control and 1.15 ± 0.12 kg/d for transport; = 0.006). No significant difference ( = 0.12) between treatments was detected for feed conversion. These results suggest that calves exposed to repeated transport may decrease feed intake compared to nontransported calves as an initial response to transport; however, overall feed conversion was not affected and these Holstein calves may have quickly acclimated to repeated transport.

Polyethylene hutches are a popular method of housing dairy calves from 0 to 60 or more days of age, although these hutches get hot when in full sun. This study characterized the relative differences in the ability of four different types of radiant barriers to reduce black-globe temperature within these hutches. Treatments included three different types of covers (two types of laminates (Cadpak P and Cadpak ESD) and an aluminized 3.0-mil white low-density polyethylene (LDPE)) and a reflective paint (LO/MIT-1). The reflective covers were 1.8 × 3 m finished size, and covered the top and sides of the hutch down to 0.15 m above the ground, leaving the front and back exposed. The LO/MIT-1 paint covered the entire sides and roof of the hutch. Two 24-h trials 1 week apart were conducted during relatively hot and clear days in early August. Black-globe temperatures were recorded in duplicate and averaged at 20-min intervals using blackened table tennis balls mounted 0.3 m above the floor in the center of each hutch. Ambient temperature (shade) during the hottest 2-h period for both trials averaged 39.9 °C while the uncovered control averaged 41.1 °C, and LO/MIT-1 averaged 39.9 °C; both of which were significantly higher (P < 0.01) than the Cadpak P (38.9 °C), Cadpak ESD (38.6 °C), and aluminized LDPE (38.7 °C). During periods of high solar radiation, the hutches with covers had lowest black-globe temperatures followed by hutches painted with reflective paint, while control hutches had the highest temperature.

This study determined the efficacy of a radiant barrier material used in the construction industry to moderate summer temperatures in polyethylene calf hutches. The cover consisted of a single layer of two-sided reflective aluminized polyester film with a center polyester scrim reinforcement (reflectivity = 95%). At each of two dairies, six hutches containing a young calf were either uncovered (control) or had reflective covers across the top and sides of the hutch, leaving the front, back, and 1.2 × 1.8-m attached outdoor wire pen exposed. Duplicate loggers mounted 20 cm above the flooring in the center of each hutch recorded interior temperature at 30-min intervals over 22 days during late August to early September. The mean daily interior peak temperatures in each of the hutches over 21 days of observation were significantly less (P < 0.001) in the hutches with reflective covers (37.48 ± 0.14 °C) than in the uncovered hutches (41.65 ± 0.45 °C) and did not differ (P = 0.77) between dairies. The mean daily interior peak temperatures in each of the hutches over the warmest 10 days of observation were significantly less (P < 0.001) in hutches with reflective covers (40.15 °C ± 0.16) than in the uncovered hutches (44.93 ± 0.47 °C). The mean interior ceiling temperatures in each of the hutches over 4 days of observation were significantly lower (P < 0.001) in the hutches with reflective covers (37.82 ± 0.36 °C) than in the uncovered hutches (46.89 ± 0.47 °C). The reflective cover used in this study moderated interior hutch temperatures but showed signs of delamination after 22 days and was relatively expensive, so more suitable material needs to be identified.

The objective of this study was to determine the ability of radiant insulation hutch covers to moderate the effect of ambient temperature and radiant energy on calves housed in polyethylene hutches. The insulation had a double layer of polyethylene bubble film laminated between a layer of aluminum foil and white polyethylene (reflectance = 95%, R value (ft(2) · °F ·h/Btu) = 2.7). In each of two experiments (exp.), hutches were either uninsulated (control) or covered with reflective insulation across the top and sides of the hutch leaving the front, back, and pen exposed. Each hutch had a 1.2 × 1.8-m attached outdoor wire pen. In both exp., rate of increase of interior hutch temperature relative to ambient temperature was lower in insulated hutches (P < 0.001) indicating they were warmer at low THI and cooler at high THI. In exp. 1, increase in respiration rate and ear canal temperature of the calves, relative to THI, were moderated in insulated hutches (P < 0.001). In Exp. 2, respiration rate was not affected by treatment (P = 0.50), but increased with increasing THI (P < 0.001). Mean ADG did not differ among treatments in either exp. (P > 0.21). Insulating calf hutches with reflective insulation moderated hutch microclimate, and improved calf comfort, but did not translate to improvements in economically relevant variables such as ADG.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of an electronic radio-frequency-identification-based system (GrowSafe System Ltd., Airdrie, Alberta, Canada) to measure feeding behavior traits in beef cattle fed a high-grain diet. Feeding behavior data were recorded by the GrowSafe system and time-lapse video using 10 heifers over a 6-d period. Observed bunk visit (BV) and meal event data (frequency and duration) were compared with electronic feeding behavior data generated by the GrowSafe system at 5 parameter settings (MPS; 30, 60, 100, 150, and 300 s), which are used to define the maximum duration between consecutive electronic identification recordings to initiate a subsequent BV event. A random coefficient model was used to compare video and electronic data using orthogonal contrasts. Video data were regressed on the electronic feeding behavior data to obtain an estimate of precision (r(2)) and other statistical estimates, including mean square error of prediction and concordance correlation coefficient, to access the adequacy of the electronic system predictions. The variation in MPS values affected BV data, but not meal event data. Electronic meal frequency and duration data were not different (P > 0.50) from observed values, and were not affected by electronic MPS values. The optimal MPS value for prediction of BV and meal event frequency and duration traits was 100 s. Our evaluation indicated the GrowSafe system 4000E was able to predict BV and meal event data when the 100-s MPS was used to analyze the feeding behavior data.

The objectives of the current research were to determine the effect of weaning on fecal shedding of Salmonella and Escherichia coli O157:H7 in dairy calves and to examine cultured isolates (to include Enterococcus) for antimicrobial susceptibility. This research was conducted on one large commercial dairy (>3000 head) in the southwestern United States. Two collections were made, during the winter (January 2009) and summer (July 2009) seasons. For the winter collection, two groups of calves were sampled (group 1: n = 18 pens, 69 head, ∼12 weeks of age; group 2: n = 19 pens, 75 head, ∼10 weeks of age). Fecal samples were collected from all calves via rectal palpation 2 days pre- and again 2 days postweaning. For the summer collection, one group of calves housed in 40 pens were utilized and 79 and 76 calves sampled 7 days pre- and 5 days postweaning, respectively. Fecal samples were collected into sterile palpation sleeves, placed on ice, and shipped to our laboratory for bacterial culture of E. coli O157:H7, Salmonella, and Enterococcus. Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined on select isolates. No differences (p > 0.10) in prevalence of Salmonella or E. coli O157:H7 were observed due to weaning in the winter collection. In the summer collection, more (p < 0.01) fecal samples were Salmonella positive preweaning (15.2%) as compared to postweaning (2.6%). No differences were observed for antimicrobial susceptibility in isolates collected pre- as compared to postweaning in either winter or summer collections, with the exception that multidrug-resistant Enterococcus faecium isolates preweaning were resistant to six antibiotics compared to seven or eight antibiotics postweaning (summer collection). Results of the current research indicate that the weaning of dairy calves does not increase the prevalence of pathogenic bacteria or substantially modify antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of these bacteria.

This study quantified the behavior of 11 tigers during periodic access to an exercise pen throughout the day and night. The study determined the amount of time spent in the pen and the percentage of time spent performing stereotypic pacing, normal locomotor behavior, and lying down while in the pen. Average access to the exercise pen was 10 hr 49 min overnight and 5 hr 30 min during the day. At night, the tigers spent 29.1% of their time in the exercise pen, during which they paced 19.6% and performed normal locomotor behavior for 23.1% of that time. By day, they spent 40.4% of their time in the exercise pen, during which they paced 10.0% and performed normal locomotor behavior 35.7% of that time. The tigers spent the rest of the time in the pen lying down. Overall, tigers will utilize an exercise pen, spending a greater percentage of time in the pen during the day than at night and also performing less stereotyped pacing than at night.

Residual feed intake (RFI) is a measure of feed efficiency defined as the difference between actual feed intake and expected feed intake required for maintenance and production. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between RFI, feeding behavior, and other performance traits in growing heifers. Individual DMI was measured in Brangus heifers (n = 115) fed a roughage-based diet (ME = 2.0 Mcal/kg) for 70 d using Calan-gate feeders. Residual feed intake was computed as the residuals from linear regression of DMI on mid-test BW(0.75) and ADG. Heifers with the greatest (least efficient, n = 18) and least (most efficient, n = 18) RFI were identified for quantification of feeding behavior traits. Continuous video recordings were obtained for all heifers during d 28 through d 56 of the 70-d feeding trial. Video data of 2 replications of four 24-h periods, 2 wk apart, were analyzed for the focal heifers. A head-down feeding event was defined as a heifer positioned in the feeder with her head lowered. A meal included all head-down feeding events that were separated by less than 300 s. The mean RFI for the high- and low-RFI heifers were 1.00 and -1.03 +/- 0.03 kg/d, respectively. High-RFI heifers consumed 21.9% more (P < 0.0001) DM but had similar BW and ADG compared with low-RFI heifers. The high-RFI heifers spent less time in head-down feeding events per day (P < 0.0001; 124 vs. 152 +/- 4.3 min/d), consumed DM at a faster rate (99.6 vs. 62.8 +/- 3.3 g/min), and ate more often per day (119.1 vs. 90.5 +/- 3.9 head-down feeding events/d) compared with the low-RFI heifers; however, meal duration and frequency were not related to RFI. We conclude that feeding behavior related to head-down feeding events may be more useful as an indicator of RFI than the number of meal events.

Aims: To determine the effect of sprinklers on faecal shedding of Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157:H7 and Salmonella in lactating dairy cattle., Methods and Results: Sprinklers were applied to lactating dairy cattle on two farms at either the feedbunk or in the holding pen prior to milking. Faecal samples were collected approx. 1 and 4 weeks following initiation of sprinkler treatments for culture of E. coli O157:H7, Salmonella and Enterococcus. No treatment differences were observed for E. coli O157:H7. Salmonella was higher (P = 0.11) in the control treatment on day-7 whereas on day-28, the bunk sprinklers increased the number of Salmonella positive cows. Salmonella prevalence decreased (P = 0.0001) on day-5 and when examined across days in cows exposed to sprinklers prior to milking. Antimicrobial susceptibility screening found very few isolates that were multi-drug resistant. All Enterococcus isolates were susceptible to vancomycin., Conclusions: This study demonstrated a significant decrease in faecal prevalence of Salmonella in lactating cattle following exposure to sprinklers administered prior to milking., Significance and Impact of the Study: Identification of current dairy management techniques that are also effective in reducing on-farm prevalence of pathogenic bacteria could have significant food safety and environmental implications.

Induced molting by feed withdrawal has been a common practice in the commercial layer industry and usually involves the removal of feed for a period of up to 14 d. However, this is a practice that is believed to adversely influence the welfare of the hens and there is a need to examine behavioral responses to alternative molt regimens. The behavioral patterns of hens on 90% alfalfa:10% layer ration, 80% alfalfa:20% layer ration, and 70% alfalfa:30% layer ration molt diets were compared with feed withdrawal (FW) hens, and fully fed (FF) hens. The White Leghorn laying hens were approximately 54 wk old and were placed in 3 identical climate-controlled rooms. The hens were individually housed in 2-tier wire battery cages and provided treatment rations and water ad libitum. Nonnutritive pecking, walking, drinking, feeder activity, preening, aggression, and head movement were quantified during two 10-min periods each day for 6 hens from each treatment. Over the 9-d treatment period, hens in the FW, 70% alfalfa:30% layer ration, and 80% alfalfa:20% layer ration groups spent significantly more time walking than hens in the 90% alfalfa:10% layer ration group. The FF and 70% alfalfa:30% layer ration hens spent half as much time preening, whereas the FW hens displayed nearly twice as much nonnutritive pecking when compared with other treatments. Most differences in head movements occurred at the beginning of the molt period, whereas during the last half of molt, alfalfa-fed hens exhibited feeder activity similar to FF hens, and all were significantly higher than that of FW hens. After some initial adjustment by the hens, consumption of alfalfa molt diets appeared to reduce nonnutritive pecking behavior, which is characteristically associated with FW hens.

Several dietary alternatives to feed withdrawal have been proposed to induce a molt in laying hens. This study compared the behavior of laying hens on an alfalfa crumble diet (ALC) to hens that were either on a conventional layer diet (FF) or hens that had feed withdrawn (FW) during a 9-d trial. Each treatment consisted of 24 hens (3 hens per battery cage), and treatment began after a 2-week acclimation period. Video cameras connected to a digital multiplexer recorded the behavior of the hens. The percentages of observations performing nonnutritive pecking, feeder activity, drinking, walking, preening, head movement, and aggression were quantified for two 10-min periods at daily intervals. The FF hens spent significantly more (P < or = 0.05) time drinking than the other treatments, whereas FW hens displayed the most head movements. From d 1 through 7, FW hens walked less than ALC hens except on d 8 when FW hens walked more than ALC and FF hens. On d 4 and 6, the FW hens spent an increased amount of time preening compared with FF hens until the last few days of the molt period. For the most part, FW hens generally displayed more nonnutritive pecking than ALC and FF hens throughout the molt period. However, FW hen visits to the feeders declined as the trial proceeded, whereas ALC and FF hens generally spent more time at the feeder. In summary, the ALC diet showed potential as an alternative to FW for inducing a molt in laying hens based on reduced nonnutritive pecking behavior, head movements, and greater feeding activity.

The aim of this study was to determine how one group of lambs utilized 2 consecutive rest periods in novel environments with access to food and water that occurred during 22 hr of motor transport. The 18.5 +/- 0.6 kg lambs (n = 15) were transported for 8 hr and then unloaded for a 6-hr rest period. After 6 hr, the lambs were reloaded for another 8 hr of transport followed by a 24-hr rest period. Reloading for a second 8 hr of transport followed the initial rest period. The percentage of lambs engaged in drinking, eating, lying, playing, or "other" was determined at 15-min intervals. During the 6-hr rest period, peak lying behavior occurred during the 2nd and 6th hr of the period. During the first 6 hr of the 24-hr rest period, the percentage of lambs lying increased while the percentage of lambs eating decreased. In addition, the percentage of lambs lying during the first 6 hr of the 24-hr rest period was greater than during the 6-hr rest period. Lying down had a greater priority than eating during the second (24-hr) rest period.

Recommendations for transportation of lambs, horses, calves, and pigs from a committee of the European Commission, which required rest stops of 6 or 24 h, every 8 h, were evaluated using Rambouillet x Suffolk lambs. The lambs of 17.6 +/- 0.5 kg of BW were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatments: transported for 22 h (continuous; n = 15); transported for 8 h, unloaded and rested for 6 h, transported for 8 h, unloaded and rested for 24 h, transported for 6 h (rested, n = 15); or remained in the home pasture throughout the study (control, n = 16). Off-trailer rest with food and water occurred in novel pens. Food deprivation in the continuous lambs was reflected by a decrease (P < 0.001) in plasma concentrations of glucose and an increase (P < 0.02) in plasma concentrations of blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, and total bilirubin relative to rested or control lambs. Electrolytes varied within and among all 3 treatments (P < 0.05), but no distinct pattern indicating dehydration was evident. Serum concentrations of cortisol were elevated in continuous and rested lambs compared with control lambs at 22 h (P < 0.05). Plasma immunoglobulin G antibody response to ovalbumin was suppressed (P < 0.05) in the continuous and rested lambs relative to the control lambs. Differences (P < 0.05) between continuous and rested lambs indicated the rest stops were sufficient to maintain BW during transport; however, these results were confounded by the control lambs losing a similar (P = 0.50) percentage of their initial BW as the continuous lambs at 22 h. The rest stops eliminated the physiological indicators of food deprivation and maintained BW but did not alleviate evidence of immunosuppression, and 52 h was required to complete the otherwise 22-h-long trip.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of feeding Ascophyllum nodosum (ANOD) to lambs at 0 (control), 0.5, 1, or 2% of DMI/d for 2 wk on lamb physiology in response to forced walking and transport during hot weather. Forty-four lambs (26 kg +/- 4.3) were used, and each lamb swallowed 3 gelatin capsules filled with ANOD or their normal 16% CP, pelleted grain ration twice daily, with the amount of ANOD dependent on the treatment. The amount of ANOD did not affect ear canal temperature or cortisol concentrations during 60 min of forced walking. The range between the minimum and maximum ear canal temperature for each lamb during 12 h of transport was narrower in lambs receiving the 2% ANOD than the control group (P = 0.05), and the 2% ANOD group also had lower (P = 0.05) ear canal temperatures than the control group during hot periods of transport. After 4 (P = 0.09) and 8 h (P = 0.05) of transport, the control group tended to have greater cortisol concentrations than the 2% ANOD group. Many differences among treatments were found in plasma protein, albumin, calcium, phosphorus, glucose, blood urea nitrogen, aspartate aminotransferase, magnesium, sodium, potassium, and chloride concentrations posttransport; mainly, the control and 0.5% ANOD groups had greater (P < 0.05) concentrations than the other 2 treatments. Aldosterone concentrations were greater in the control and 0.5% ANOD group than in the 1 and 2% ANOD groups before transport, whereas the concentrations were not different after transport, suggesting pretransport concentrations were lowered by supplementation. The 1 and 2% ANOD groups lost more BW than the control group as a result of transport (P = 0.04). After transport, no differences were observed in the latency for lambs to drink, eat, or lay. There was a suppression of the IgG and IgM antibody responses at 4 and 7 d after administration of ovalbumin, with greater ANOD supplementation rates suppressing antibody response the greatest. Although ANOD decreased ear canal temperature in hot periods of transport, stabilized electrolyte concentrations, and decreased cortisol throughout transport, it also suppressed the antibody response indicating that the effect of ANOD on immune function merits further investigation.

Previous reports of adrenal progesterone (P4) contributions during late gestation in cattle, and ACTH-induced P4 responses in the non-pregnant heifer, prompted a retrospective investigation to evaluate the plasma P4 response and the relative ratio of plasma cortisol (CT) to P4 following ACTH administration during mid-gestation in pregnant Brahman heifers. Twenty-three pregnant (139.0 +/- 5.0 days of gestation) Brahman heifers received one of the following treatments: 0 (saline; n = 5), 0.125 (n = 4), 0.25 (n = 5), 0.5 (n = 4), or 1.0 (n = 5)IU of ACTH per kg BW. Blood samples were collected at -15 and -0.5 (time 0), 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 105, 135, 165, 195, and 255-min post-ACTH challenge. Plasma P4 and CT were quantified by RIA. Pre-ACTH P4 did not differ (P > 0.10) among ACTH treatment groups (pooled, 12.1 +/- 0.6 ng/mL). Among peak P4 values at 15-min post-ACTH infusion, control P4 (9.6 +/- 1.2 ng/mL) tended to be lower (P < 0.07) than 0.5 IU ACTH-treated heifers (13.3 +/- 1.1 ng/mL); and were lower (P < 0.02) than 0.25 and 1.0 IU ACTH-treated heifers (14.7 +/- 1.1 and 22.2 +/- 3.7 ng/mL, respectively). During the primary P4 response period (0 to 75-min post-ACTH), the area under the curve (AUC) was greater (P < 0.05) for 1.0 IU ACTH-treated heifers than all other groups. The CT:P4 ratios were lower (time x treatment, P < 0.01) for control heifers than all ACTH-treated heifers. Among ACTH-treated heifers, CT:P4 ratio response and CT:P4 ratio AUC were similar (P > 0.10) following ACTH challenge. In conclusion, acute increases in ACTH elevated plasma P4, likely of adrenal origin, in mid-gestation pregnant heifers, while the CT:P4 ratio (relative output) remained constant irrespective of ACTH dose (0.125-1.0 IU). Whether ACTH-induced increases in P4 in pregnant animals are of physiological significance (e.g., an accessory role in the maintenance of pregnancy during periods of acute stress) remains to be determined.

Systematic studies of cloned animals generated from adult somatic cell nuclei are critical in assessing the utility of somatic cell cloning in various applications, including the safety of food products from cloned animals and their offspring. Previously, we compared somatic cell derived cloned pigs with naturally bred control pigs on a series of physiological and genetic parameters. We have extended our studies to the F1 progeny of these clones to see whether these phenotypic differences are transmitted to the next generation. There were no differences in the average litter size between litters from cloned gilts and naturally bred controls (7.78 +/- 2.6 and 7.40 +/- 3.0, respectively; mean +/- SD) or in the degree of litter size variation (coefficients of variation of 33.4% and 40.5% for litters of clones and controls, respectively). Similarly there were no statistical differences between sex ratios of cloned litters (51-49%, M:F) and control litters (59-41%, M:F). Blood profiles between cloned pigs, control pigs, and their progeny were compared at two time points (i.e., 15 and 27 weeks) to quantify the effect of cloning on various blood parameters and their transmission to the next generation. Although the range of values for all traits overlapped between different classes, the variability between all the traits in F1 progeny of clones and the control pigs was similar at 15 and 27 weeks, with one exception. Combined, our data and previous results in mice strongly support the hypothesis that offspring of clones are similar to offspring of naturally bred animals, and as such there should not be any increased risks associated with consumption of products from these animals.

The type of equipment used to transport circus tigers, environmental factors experienced during transport, and resultant body temperatures of tigers transported were surveyed during hot and cold weather conditions with six different circus tiger acts. Dataloggers recorded interior and exterior temperatures, relative humidity, and radiant heat at 5-min intervals during each trip. Microdataloggers fed to the tigers recorded body temperature and were recovered from eight Bengal (Panthera tigris tigris), Siberian (P. t. altaica), or Bengal-Sumatran (P. t. tigris-P. t. sumatrae) cross tigers from four different circuses. Three basic types of systems were used by circus acts to transport tigers: freestanding cages mounted on wheels that were winched or pushed into a semitrailer for transport, cages built into the trailer itself, and weather-resistant units transported on flatbed railcars or flatbed truck trailers. The highest temperature encountered inside a trailer was 37.3 degrees C in hot weather conditions, but overall, temperatures were usually between 21.1-26.7 degrees C. Temperature inside the trailers did not appear to be affected by movement and did not generally exceed ambient temperatures, indicating adequate insulation and passive ventilation. During cold weather trips, the lowest temperature inside the trailers was -1.1 degrees C, occurring during an overnight stop. Interior temperatures during cold weather transport stayed 2-6 degrees C warmer than ambient temperatures. The body temperatures of the tigers were unaffected by extreme temperatures. The only changes observed in body temperature were increases of 1-2 degrees C caused by activity and excitement associated with loading in several groups of tigers, regardless of whether it was hot or cold weather. Whenever measured, carbon monoxide and ammonia were below the detectable concentrations of 10 and 1 ppm. respectively. Overall, transport did not appear to have any adverse effects on the tigers' ability to thermoregulate.

Cloning by somatic cell nuclear transfer can result in the birth of animals with phenotypic and gene expression abnormalities. We compared adult cloned pigs and adult pigs from naturally bred control females using a series of physiological and genetic parameters, including detailed methylation profiles of selected genomic regions. Phenotypic and genetic analyses indicated that there are two classes of traits, one in which the cloned pigs have less variation than controls and another characterized by variation that is equally high in cloned and control pigs. Although cloning creates animals within the normal phenotypic range, it increases the variability associated with some traits. This finding is contrary to the expectation that cloning can be used to reduce the size of groups involved in animal experimentation and to reproduce an animal, including a pet, with a homogenous set of desired traits.

Reasons for Performing Study: While imprint training procedures have been promoted in popular magazines, they have received limited scientific investigation., Objectives: To determine the effects of a neonatal imprint training procedure on 6-month-old foals and to determine if any one session had a greater effect than others., Methods: Foals (n = 131) were divided into the following treatments: no imprint training, imprint training at birth, 12, 24 and 48 h after birth or imprint training only at birth, 12, 24, 48, or 72 h after birth. Foals then received minimal human handling until they were tested at 6 months., Results: During training, time to complete exposure to the stimulus was significant for only 2 of 6 stimuli. Percentage change in baseline heart rate was significant for only 2 of 10 stimuli. These 4 effects were randomly spread across treatments., Conclusions: Neither the number of imprint training sessions (0, 1, or 4) nor the timing of imprint training sessions (none, birth, 12, 24, 48, or 72 h after birth) influenced the foal's behaviour at 6 months of age., Potential Clinical Relevance: In this study, imprint training did not result in better behaved, less reactive foals.

Several studies have attempted to determine the effects of orientation on a horse's ability to maintain balance during transportation. The results have often been contradictory because of differences in trailer design and lack of simultaneous comparisons. In this study, three replications of two forward-facing and two rear-facing horses were transported at the same time over a standardized course to allow for simultaneous comparisons. Each animal's total forward and backward motion during transport was calculated to estimate the effect of orientation on the horses' ability to maintain balance. The course consisted of four laps around a 3.6-km rectangular course, each lap reversing direction, totaling 14.4km. To mimic realistic travel, the course had artificial bumps, three turns (90 degrees, 45 degrees, and 135 degrees ), five straight-aways, and a hard stop at the end of each lap. Four horses were transported over the course in 3.7mx2.4m stalls mounted in-line on a 16-m long commercial straight-deck trailer (16 wheels). At the end of the first run (four laps), the orientation of each horse, two forward and two rear-facing, was reversed for a second run. Twelve horses were transported in each of the two orientations. Movement was recorded using video cameras positioned perpendicular to the horse's side. Movement while forward-facing ranged from 4.75 to 34.48m, averaging 12.95m; when rear-facing, movement ranged from 8.13 to 35.21m, averaging 16.99m, and was not statistically influenced by orientation (P=0.1219) due to high variation. Certain horses did demonstrate a superior ability to maintain balance in a particular orientation. Thus individual characteristics and other factors may play a larger role than orientation alone in the ability of horses to maintain balance during transport.

The objective of this research was to determine if confinement of 8-day-old calves for varying lengths of time is associated with an increase in motivation to perform locomotor behaviors. Holstein heifer and bull calves (N=48) were used in a factorial arrangement with two crossed factors. Factor A was housing with two levels (individual confinement versus group pens) and factor B was hours in confinement with four levels (6, 12, 24, and 48h). Individual confinement was in 1.06mx1.06m pens, while group pens had a 3.68mx6.09m outside run and a 3.68mx6.09m covered area that also contained a 3.68mx2.44m area bedded with wood shavings. The calves were placed on treatment when they were 8+/-2 days of age.At the end of the treatments, a blood sample was taken for plasma cortisol determination and lymphocyte counts and the calves were open-field tested for 5min.Walk, trot, distance traveled and behaviors performed while standing during the open-field test were higher in the calves kept in group pens (P=0.0003, 0.01, 0.04 and 0.04), but were not influenced by hours in treatment. Calves confined for 48h had greater incidences of kicking and falling (P=0.014 and 0.025). Lymphocyte count (P=0.029) was lower in the calves confined for 12h, but there was not a trend across hours in confinement that indicated a consistent effect. Housing or hours in treatment did not affect canter, buck, buck-kick, rear, stumble, vocalization and cortisol concentrations. The interaction between hours in treatment and housing was not significant for any of the variables tested.This study suggests that 2 days may not have been enough time for the effects of close confinement to influence motivation in young calves, or that calves averaging 8 days of age may be too young to display increased motivation for locomotor activity. Confinement of such young calves actually inhibits locomotor activity in open-field tests.

The aim of this study was to characterize progressive dehydration, stress responses, and water consumption patterns of horses transported long distances in hot weather and to estimate recovery time after 30 h of transport. Thirty adult mares and geldings were deprived of access to feed and water for 6 h, blocked by age, sex, breed, and body condition score, and assigned to one of the following treatments: penned, offered water (Penned/Watered, n = 5); penned, no water (Penned, n = 5); transported, offered water (Transported/Watered, two groups of n = 5); or transported, no water (Transported, two groups of n = 5). None of the horses had access to feed while on treatment. A commercial, single-deck, open-top, 15.8-m-long trailer was divided into four compartments to accommodate the two Transported/Watered and two Transported groups at 1.77 m2 per horse. At 8, 17, 22, 27, 30, and 33 h after initiation of transport, the truck returned and stopped for 1 h to allow for data collection and to give the Transported/Watered and Penned/Watered horses 10 min of access to water in individual buckets. Treatments for the non-watered horses (Penned and Transported) were terminated after 30 h due to dehydration and fatigue, whereas the watered horses (Penned/Watered and Transported/Watered) could continue for another 2 h. Mean weight loss after 30 h was greater in the Penned (57.1 kg, 12.8%) and Transported (52.2 kg, 10.3%) groups than in the Transported/Watered (20.7 kg, 4.0%) and Penned/Watered (17 kg, 3.5%) groups (P < 0.0001). Respiration, heart rate, sodium, chloride, total protein, and osmolality were significantly elevated in the non-watered horses (P < 0.0001), and sodium, chloride, total protein, and osmolality greatly exceeded normal reference ranges, indicating severe dehydration. Although not statistically significant, the horses penned in full sun, with or without water, had a dehydration response that was slightly greater than that of the transported horses. Plasma cortisol concentrations had a significant time x treatment interaction (P < 0.0001), in which the Penned/Watered and Transported/Watered horses remained relatively consistent, whereas the Transported, and especially the Penned, horses' plasma cortisol concentrations greatly increased. Transporting healthy horses for more than 24 h during hot weather and without water will cause severe dehydration; transport for more than 28 h even with periodic access to water will likely be harmful due to increasing fatigue.

Three groups of slaughter-type horses, totaling 30 mares and 29 geldings, were used to determine density effects on displacement (distance moved during a stop), falls, injuries, and orientation using a single-deck, open-topped commercial semi-trailer. Each horse was assigned to one of two treatments: high density (1.28 m(2)/horse with 14 horses) or low density (2.23 m(2)/horse with eight horses). Both treatments occurred sequentially on the same day (treatment order was alternated each trial), using the middle 2.44x7.32 m compartment of a large semi-tractor trailer. The horses were transported for two laps around a 7.28-km course, averaging 25 min and 36+/-89 s. Each lap consisted of two 60 degrees turns, four 90 degrees turns, two 120 degrees turns, one 180 degrees turn, six hard brakes, and six rapid accelerations, which were more severe than conditions usually experienced in commercial transport. Displacement, falls, and orientation were recorded for each horse using overhead video cameras. Average displacement between the two densities was not different (P=0.47). The proportion of horses that fell in the high-density treatment (40%) was greater (P=0.046) than the low-density treatment (17%). The proportion of horses injured was greater (P=0.006) in high density (64%) than low density (29%). However, there was not a significant difference in the average severity of injury for the high-density treatment (1.77) versus the low-density treatment (0.92), P=0.48. Overall, the horses did not show a preference (P=0.38) for facing toward (47.5%) or away (40.7%) from the direction of travel and orientation did not differ (P0.18) between the high and low-density treatments. High stocking density of horses during transport increases the incidence of falls and injuries, and made it more difficult to get up when a subject was floored.

Two experiments were conducted to determine the responsiveness of salivary and plasma cortisol to acute (i.v.), depot (i.m.) and chronic (repeated i.m.) adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) administration in swine. In Experiment 1, barrows (castrated pigs) were assigned to one of three injection treatments: (1) saline i.m. (SHAM1, n=2); (2) 0.75 IU/kg BW ACTH in saline i.v. (ACUTE, n=2); (3) 2.25 IU/kg BW ACTH in gel i.m. (DEPOT, n=3). Total cortisol concentrations were determined for concurrent saliva and blood samples. Correlations between salivary and plasma cortisol within treatments were: SHAM1, r=0.60; ACUTE, r=0.58; DEPOT, r=0.79. In Experiment 2, barrows were assigned to one of two injection treatments: (1) gel i.m. (SHAM2, n=3); (2) 2.25 IU/kg BW ACTH in gel i.m. (CHRONIC, n=4). The injections occurred every 6 h for a total of eight injections. Concurrent saliva and blood samples were obtained every 3 h for 72 h followed by an increasing sampling interval until day 6. Overall correlations between salivary and plasma cortisol were: SHAM2, r=0.30 and CHRONIC, r=0.61. Experiment 1 found that the relationship between salivary and plasma cortisol was stronger during longer (DEPOT) than shorter (ACUTE) ACTH stimulation. Experiment 2 found a strong relationship between the two measurements during chronic ACTH stimulation, but that relationship weakened after ACTH stimulation ceased.

Objectives: To characterize progressive patterns of dehydration, stress responses, and water consumption in horses transported long distances in hot weather and to evaluate various measurements in detecting dehydration and stress in transported horses., Design: Prospective study., Animals: 30 mature, healthy horses., Procedure: The following 4 treatment groups were studied: horses that were penned and offered water every 5 hours (n = 5), horses that were penned and not offered water (5), horses that were transported in a truck and offered water every 5 hours (10), and horses that were transported and not offered water (10). The study commenced after 6 hours of water deprivation. Every 4 hours, the truck returned to the pen area and body weights were measured, physical examinations were performed, and blood samples were obtained. During this 1-hour period, water was offered to some horses, depending on treatment group., Results: After 24 hours of transport, 3 horses were judged unable to continue and the study was terminated. Horses that were penned and offered water drank a mean of 38.2 L and horses that were transported and offered water drank 20.9 L, but some of the latter horses did not drink until after 19 or 24 hours of transport. In horses that were transported or penned and not offered water, serum electrolyte concentrations were greater than reference range values by 19 hours. Most horses that were transported and offered water consumed adequate water to postpone severe dehydration beyond 24 hours., Clinical Implications: Tame horses in good condition and initially deprived of access of water for approximately 6 hours can be transported in groups in open trailers during hot, humid conditions for up to 24 hours before dehydration and fatigue become severe. Rectal temperature and appearance of the horses were the most useful measures for determining crisis situations.

Pregnant Brahman cows (n = 42), bred to either Brahman or Tuli bulls, were randomly assigned to one of three treatments: 1) transported in a stock trailer for 24.2 km, unloaded at a second farm and penned for 1 h, and then returned to the original farm (TRANS); 2) i.v. injection of ACTH, 1 IU/kg BW (ACTH); or 3) walked through the handling facilities (SHAM). Treatments were initiated on d 60 and repeated at 80, 100, 120, and 140 d of gestation. The calves from these cows were subjected to tests to measure their capacity to react to stress. In Test 1, Tuli-sired calves were restrained at 10 and 150 d of age for 3.5 h. In Test 2, Brahman-sired calves were restrained for 3.5 h and given an injection of ACTH (.125 IU ACTH/kg of BW). In Test 3, Test-2 calves were restrained at 180 d of age and hot-iron branded. In Test 4, Test-1 calves were restrained at 180 d of age and given an injection of cortisol (6.7 ng/kg BW) to estimate cortisol clearance rate. During all tests, calves were restrained for 3.5 h, and heart rates were recorded and blood samples were taken at -15, 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, 120, and 180 min. The 10- and 150-d-old TRANS calves maintained greater plasma cortisol in Test 1 (restraint) than the ACTH and SHAM calves (P < .01). The ACTH challenge (Test 2) increased plasma cortisol and ACTH, but cow treatment did not alter the response (P > .4). In response to branding (Test 3), the TRANS, ACTH, and SHAM calves' overall mean plasma cortisol was not affected by treatment (52, 51, and 43 +/- 3 ng/mL, respectively; P > .1), nor was the calves' overall heart rate (91, 94, and 86 +/- 3 beats/min, respectively; P > . 1). In Test 4, TRANS calves cleared plasma of cortisol at a slower rate than did the SHAM calves (P < .01), but not the ACTH calves (261, 374, and 473 +/- 50 mL/min, respectively; P > .1). The TRANS calves had an overall greater heart rate than did the ACTH or the SHAM calves (91, 79, and 77 +/- 2 beats/min, respectively; P < .001). Exposing cows to repeated transportation stress during gestation altered their calf's physiological response to stress, and these alterations could have a profound influence on the calfs ability to adapt to stress, thereby influencing its welfare. Further research should examine the growth, immune function, and reproductive function of prenatally stressed calves to determine whether these changes in plasma cortisol are beneficial or deleterious.

Twelve pregnant Brahman cows were randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups: 1) transported in a stock trailer for 24.2 km, unloaded at a second farm and penned for 1 hr, and then returned to the original farm (TRANS, n = 6); or 2) walked through the handling facilities (SHAM, n = 6). Treatments were repeated at 60, 80, 100, 120, and 140 d of gestation. Calves were delivered by cesarean section on d 266 of gestation. The male:female ratio was 4:2 and 5:1 for the TRANS and SHAM treatment groups, respectively. Before calf removal and severance of the umbilical blood flow, a blood sample was collected from the calf to determine plasma concentrations of adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) and cortisol. The calf was then sedated and exsanguinated, after which pituitary and adrenal glands were collected. The adrenals were immediately weighed, and a cross-section from the left adrenal was stored in 4% paraformaldehyde until being embedded in paraffin. Eight sections from each adrenal were sliced (5 microns), fixed, and then stained with Harris' hematoxylin and eosin. Areas of the cortex and medulla were calculated with a computerized digitizing unit and tracing of the viewed section. The TRANS calves had heavier body weights (BW) (28.7 vs. 23.9 +/- 1.8 kg; P < 0.07), pituitary glands (12.63 vs. 8.24 +/- 1.10 g/kg BW; P < 0.008), and heart weights (5.58 vs. 5.17 +/- 0.58 g/kg BW; P < 0.05) than did the SHAM calves. Plasma concentrations of ACTH and cortisol did not differ between SHAM and TRANS calves (57 vs. 82 +/- 14 pg/ml and 7.0 vs. 6.7 +/- 0.9 ng/ml, respectively; P > 0.2). Adrenal gland weight and medulla-to-cortex ratio did not differ between SHAM and TRANS calves (0.61 and 0.73 +/- 0.03 g and 0.97 and 0.99 +/- 0.12 g, respectively; P > 0.2). These results suggest that the altered response to stress in prenatally stressed calves is not associated with morphological changes in the adrenal gland but may be due to effects of prenatal stress on the fetal pituitary.

The appropriate dose and the ability of exogenous ACTH to mimic the physiological effects of a real stressor need to be determined. In Exp. 1, 25 pregnant Brahman heifers were injected i.v. with either 0 (saline), .125, .25, .5, or 1 i.u. of ACTH/kg BW. Plasma cortisol was determined in blood samples collected during a 5-h period, and an integrated cortisol response was calculated for each cow. The greater the dose of ACTH, the greater was the integrated cortisol response (P < .001). However, peak plasma cortisol in response to the four doses of ACTH did not differ (P > .6). The plasma cortisol concentrations returned to baseline more slowly in those cows receiving the greater doses of ACTH, making their integrated areas of response greater. In Exp. 2, pregnant Brahman cows were either transported 48 km (n = 28), injected with 1 i.u. of ACTH/kg BW (n = 21), or served as shams (n = 28). Each treatment was repeated at 60, 80, 100, 120, and 140 d of gestation. Shrink was greater for the transported cows than for either the ACTH-treated or sham cows, 14.3, 6.0, and 5.2 kg (P < .001). Shrink also decreased in response to each subsequent application of treatment for all three treatment groups (P < .001). Transported cows had lower plasma cortisol concentrations after the first two applications of treatments (P < .006). The range of doses of ACTH caused a similar peak cortisol release; however, it took cortisol longer to return to baseline as ACTH dose increased. Repeated administration of exogenous ACTH did not cause the same amount of shrinkage as transportation, and the resultant cortisol concentrations remained consistent for each administration. There was no apparent carryover effect of repeated administration of ACTH at 20-d intervals. Maximal plasma cortisol concentrations in Brahman cattle can be obtained with doses of ACTH much smaller than those traditionally injected. However, larger doses of ACTH maintained plasma cortisol concentrations for a longer duration. Repeated transportation caused a decrease in cortisol release and shrinkage indicative of psychological habituation. Injections of ACTH did not cause the same physiological response as transportation.

A unique law (Act 201) requiring livestock markets to place an identifying mark on calves up to 90 kg each time they are sold went into effect in Wisconsin in 1993. The intent of the law is to reduce the number of times calves are resold and hence become "stale." The original proponents of the law proposed that calves be ear-notched each time they are sold. Ear notching, however, was resisted by Wisconsin regulatory agencies partly because of fear of an adverse public reaction. These authors then conducted a study to determine the approximate amount of discomfort experienced by young Holstein calves during ear notching. Six 2-mo-old Holstein calves were used to determine heart rate and behavioral responses to a standard "V" pig ear notcher (6 mm wide x 14 mm deep) applied between the tip and halfway down the dorsal edge of the left ear. Five other calves were given 30 s of access to a rubber nipple to provide a comparison to a desirable stimulus. Ear notching only elicited a mild startle response that lasted 1 to 2 s followed by resumption of normal behavior. The calves presented with the nipple suckled or butted the nipple for the full 30 s. The mean heart rate for the 30-s period in which treatments occurred was 95 +/- 4.8 bpm and 110 +/- 5.8 bpm for the notched and suckled calves, respectively, and was not influenced by treatments (P = .50).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

A public debate has recently arisen, largely surrounding the issue of pain, over whether freeze or hot-iron branding should be the preferred method of permanently identifying cattle. This study addressed that question by quantifying the following accepted measures of distress and pain over a 25-min sampling period: elevated heart rate, concentrations of cortisol, epinephrine, and norepinephrine, and escape-avoidance reactions and vocalizations. Twenty-four dairy cows (15 Holsteins and 9 Jerseys) were assigned to one of three treatments: freeze-branded (F), hot-iron-branded (H), or sham-branded (S), in which a room-temperature brander was applied. Plasma epinephrine and norepinephrine concentrations showed no discernible trends. Plasma cortisol concentrations were elevated in the F and H cows from 5.5 min to 25.5 min postbranding (P = .04). Heart rate, analyzed as a proportion of the prebranding mean, showed that H cows had a greater, more acute, response than did F cows (P = .04), which exhibited a more prolonged response (P = .07). No cows vocalized during branding; however, H cows had a greater escape-avoidance reaction toward branding than did the F and S cows. Both methods of branding produced elevated heart rates and cortisol concentrations indicative of pain sensations. Because the cows exhibited a greater escape-avoidance reaction and heart rate proportions to hot-iron branding, freeze banding would be preferable to hot-iron branding when feasible.

Twenty-seven crossbred calves (1/2 Simmental, 1/4 Hereford, 1/4 Brahman) averaging 257 +/- 11 d of age were either hot-iron-branded (H), freeze-branded (F), or sham-branded (S). Calves were blocked for temperament, weight, and sex and were randomly assigned to day and order in which treatments were applied. To reduce stress from handling at treatment time, each calf was herded through the squeeze chute daily for 5 d before the experiment. Jugular cannulas were inserted in each calf 1 d before application of treatment. Blood samples and heart rate measures were obtained at -5, -3, 0, .5, 1, 3, 5, 10, 15, and 20 min after application of the treatments. Mean concentrations of plasma epinephrine (EPI) were higher for H calves at time .5 min than for either S or F calves (P = .10). To account for individual differences, prebranding heart rates and hormone concentrations were subtracted from subsequent samples and were also used to calculate a proportion for each subsequent sample. Analyses of subtracted values found that EPI concentrations were greater for H calves than for either S or F calves (P = .007) at .5 min postbranding. No other differences were found for the subtracted analyses. Analyses of proportion data also revealed that H calves had greater EPI than did either S or F calves (P = .027) at .5 min postbranding. Only three animals vocalized during branding, one H calf and two F calves. Despite the 5-d acclimation period, handling and restraint elevated plasma cortisol concentrations and heart rate.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Eight Nubian dairy goat does in one experiment, and eight Alpine dairy goat does in a second experiment, were randomly allotted to food-thwarted or fed groups in a crossover experimental design. Food thwarting was hypothesized to produce an emotional state analogous to frustration. After a 1-week training period during which the goats of both breeds were conditioned to being simultaneously fed in adjacent feeding stalls, frustration was induced in half the goats by feeding only alternate does. Focal animal behavior was recorded for the initial five min after feeding frustration commenced. Blood samples were collected via a jugular cannula before, during and after frustration was induced for thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), cortisol, norepinephrine (NOR), and epinephrine (EPI) determinations. Food thwarting was characterized by increased plasma concentrations of NOR, and increased incidences of pawing, head movements, mouthing of objects, behaviors directed toward neighboring does being fed, and rearing (p less than 0.01). When data were pooled across experiments, breed had a strong influence on cortisol (p less than 0.05), with Nubian does having higher concentrations regardless of treatment. Concentrations of hormones were not significantly correlated with behaviors. These findings suggest that frustration may elicit a discharge of NOR but not EPI.

Eight Nubian and eight Alpine dairy goat does were used in a crossover experimental design to determine the effect of 30 min of isolation on behavior and plasma concentrations of thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), cortisol, norepinephrine (NOR), and epinephrine (EPI). Isolation was hypothesized to produce an emotional state analogous to fear. Focal animal behavior was recorded for the initial five min of isolation. Blood samples were obtained via jugular cannulae at 0 (immediately prior), 10, 20, 30 (during isolation), 40, 50 and 60 min (after return to their group). Response to isolation was characterized physiologically by increased plasma concentrations of NOR (p less than 0.01), but not T3, T4, cortisol or EPI, indicating a sympathetic discharge. Isolated goats also vocalized more frequently (p less than 0.01) and spent a greater amount of time sniffing, trotting and rearing (p less than 0.05). The Nubian does reacted more strongly (elevated NOR, trotting and rearing, p less than 0.01) to isolation than the Apline does.

Many researchers view stress theory as having evolved from a specific response for each specific stimulus, through a standardized general adaptation syndrome for a wide variety of stressors, to a newly hypothesized model that suggests a standardized physiological response for psychological stressors and specific homeostatic responses for physical stressors. Stressors can originate from within an individual (endogenous) or from the environment (exogenous). A sense of control over one's environment (exogenous stimuli) and predictability of stimuli are extremely important in determining the potency of psychological stressors. The performance of highly repetitive, stereotyped behaviors has been shown to help animals cope with environments containing little or unvaried stimulation. Chronic psychological stressors are the most problematic area of stress research and animal care. Animals may respond behaviorally to chronic stressors by either achieving adaptation or by showing such conditions as learned helplessness, intensification of drives, stereotyped behavior, and absence of normal behaviors. A chronic endogenous buildup of motivation to perform specific behaviors that an animal has been prevented from performing can be quantified and result in animals displaying signs of chronic stress, i.e., altered metabolism (hormones), suppressed immune system, and learned helplessness. It is of paramount importance that the behavioral and physiological variables utilized in stress research be relevant to the particular species and questions under study.
