We present results from a study of 94 red giant stars in the globular cluster M53. We use low-resolution spectra to measure the strength of CN and CH features at $\sim$3800 and 4300 \r{A}, respectively. The strengths of these features are used to classify stars into a CN-enhanced and CN-normal population and to measure C and N abundances in all 94 stars. We find the red giant branch stars to be evenly split between the two populations identified, and observe the presence of CN-enhanced stars on the asymptotic giant branch. In addition, we identify 5 CH star candidates based on the strength of their CN and CH band features, and the presence of a P-branch in their CH band. We compare our identification of multiple populations to those based on the Na-O anti-correlation and pseudo-color indices in HST UV photometry, and find general agreement between all three methods. Our large sample size also allows us to study the radial distribution of each population, and we find that the CN-enhanced population is more centrally concentrated. We use our C and N measurements to compare the evolutionary changes in these elements as a function of magnitude between the two populations, and show that both populations experience similar evolutionary changes to the surface abundances of C and N. Finally, we calculate C+N+O abundances for each population and compare them to similar measurements made in M10; we find that in both clusters CN-enhanced stars have a slightly enhanced C+N+O ($\Delta$(C+N+O) $\sim$ 0.2 dex).

We have observed the CN features at $\sim$3800 ~\AA~ and 4120~ \AA~ as well as the CH band at $\sim$4300~\AA~ for 145 evolved stars in the Galactic globular cluster M71 using the multi-object spectrograph, Hydra, on the WIYN-3.5m telescope. We use these measurements to create two $\delta$CN indices finding that both distributions are best fit by two populations, a CN-enhanced and CN-normal. We find that 42 $\pm$ 4\% of the RGB stars in our sample are CN-enhanced. The percentage of CN-enhanced is 40 $\pm$ 13\% for the AGB and 33 $\pm$ 9\% for the HB stars, which suggests there are no missing second generation stars at these stages of stellar evolution. The two generations also separate in magnitude and color on the HB, which allows us to find the difference in He abundance between the two populations by fitting appropriate ZAHBs. The broad range of distances from the cluster's center covered by our sample allows us to study the dependence of the ratio of the number of first to second population stars on the distance from the cluster's center, and we find that this ratio does not vary radially and that the two populations are spatially mixed. Finally, we compare our identification of multiple populations with the classification based on the Na-O anti-correlation and the HST UV photometry, and we find good agreement with both methods., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures

We present CN and CH band measurements for 137 RGB and AGB stars in the Galactic globular cluster M10. Our measurements come from low resolution spectroscopy taken with the Hydra spectrograph on the WIYN-3.5m telescope. We use these measurements to identify two populations of stars within the cluster, a CN-normal and CN-enhanced, and find that in our sample 60% of stars are CN-enhanced. Our large sample allows us to conduct a detailed analysis on the carbon and nitrogen abundances and the radial distribution of each population separately. Our analysis of the radial dependence shows that each population has the same radial distribution in the cluster, which is likely due to the cluster being dynamically evolved. We also compare our results to other methods of classifying multiple populations in globular clusters such as the Na-O anti-correlation and the HST pseudo-color magnitude diagrams. We find that these three methods of identifying multiple populations are in good agreement with each other for M10 and all lead to an estimate of the fraction of second generation stars approximately equal to 60%. Among AGB stars, when classified by the CN band, there appears to be a lack of second generation stars when compared to the RGB stars. However, when classified by [N/Fe], we find a similar 60% of AGB stars in the second generation. Finally, we use the measured carbon and nitrogen abundances in RGB stars to study the change of each element with magnitude as stars evolve up the RGB, comparing the results to globular clusters of similar metallicity, M3 and M13., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, Accepted to AJ

Neutron-capture elements, those with Z > 35, are the least well-understood in terms of nucleosynthesis and formation environments. The rapid neutron-capture, or r-process, elements are formed in the environments and/or remnants of massive stars, while the slow neutron-capture, or s-process, elements are primarily formed in low-mass AGB stars. These elements can provide much information about Galactic star formation and enrichment, but observational data is limited. We have assembled a sample of 68 stars in 23 open clusters that we use to probe abundance trends for six neutron-capture elements (Eu, Gd, Dy, Mo, Pr, and Nd) with cluster age and location in the disk of the Galaxy. In order to keep our analysis as homogenous as possible, we use an automated synthesis fitting program, which also enables us to measure multiple (3-10) lines for each element. We find that the pure r-process elements (Eu, Gd, and Dy) have positive trends with increasing cluster age, while the mixed r- and s- process elements (Mo, Pr, and Nd) have insignificant trends consistent with zero. Pr, Nd, Eu, Gd, and Dy have similar, slight (though mostly statistically significant) gradients of ~0.04 dex/kpc. NGC 5053 provides a rich environment to test our understanding of the complex evolution of globular clusters (GCs). Recent studies have found that this cluster has interesting morphological features beyond the typical spherical distribution of GCs, suggesting that external tidal effects have played an important role in its evolution and current properties. Additionally, simulations have shown that NGC 5053 could be a likely candidate to belong to the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy (Sgr dSph) stream. Using the Wisconsin-Indiana-Yale-NOAO-Hydra multi-object spectrograph, we have collected high quality (signal-to-noise ratio $\sim$ 75-90), medium-resolution spectra for red giant branch stars in NGC 5053. Using these spectra we have measured the Fe, Ca, Ti, Ni, Ba, Na, and O abundances in the cluster. We measure an average cluster [Fe/H] abundance of -2.45 with a standard deviation of 0.04 dex, making NGC 5053 one of the most metal-poor GCs in the Milky Way (MW). The [Ca/Fe], [Ti/Fe], and [Ba/Fe] we measure are consistent with the abundances of MW halo stars at a similar metallicity, with alpha-enhanced ratios and slightly depleted [Ba/Fe]. The Na and O abundances show the Na-O anti-correlation found in most GCs. From our abundance analysis it appears that NGC 5053 is at least chemically similar to other GCs found in the MW. We have obtained high-resolution spectra of 32 giants in the open cluster NGC 7789 using the Wisconsin-Indiana-Yale-NOAO Hydra spectrograph. We explore differences in atmospheric parameters and elemental abundances caused by the use of the linelist developed for the Gaia-ESO Survey (GES) compared to one based on Arcturus used in our previous work. [Fe/H] values decrease when using the GES linelist instead of the Arcturus-based linelist; these differences are probably driven by systematically lower (~ -0.1 dex) GES surface gravities. Using the GES linelist we determine abundances for 10 elements - Fe, Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, Na, Ni, Zr, Ba, and La. We find the cluster's average metallicity [Fe/H] = 0.03 +/- 0.07 dex, in good agreement with literature values, and a lower [Mg/Fe] abundance than has been reported before for this cluster (0.11 +/- 0.05 dex). We also find the neutron-capture element barium to be highly enhanced - [Ba/Fe] = +0.48 +/- 0.08 - and disparate from cluster measurements of neutron-capture elements La and Zr (-0.08 +/- 0.05 and 0.08 +/- 0.08, respectively). We present radial velocities for stars in the field of the open star clusters Berkeley 44, Berkeley 81, and NGC 6802 from spectra obtained using the Wisconsin-Indiana-Yale-NOAO (WIYN) 3.5 m telescope. These clusters are of intermediate age (1-3 Gyr), located within the solar Galactocentric radius, and have no previous radial velocity measurements. We find mean radial velocities of -9.6 +/- 3.0 km s^-1, 48.1 +/- 2.0 km s^-1, and 12.4 +/- 2.8 km s^-1 for Be 44, Be 81, and NGC 6802, respectively. We present an analysis of radial velocities of 134 open clusters of a wide range of ages using data obtained in this study and the literature. Assuming the system of clusters rotates about the Galactic center with a constant velocity, we find older clusters exhibit a slower rotation and larger line-of-sight (LOS) velocity dispersion than younger clusters. The gradual decrease in rotational velocity of the cluster system with age is accompanied by a smooth increase in LOS velocity dispersion, which we interpret as the effect of heating on the open cluster system over time.

Large spectroscopic surveys such as the Gaia-ESO Survey produce huge quantities of data. Automatic tools are necessary to efficiently handle this material. The measurement of equivalent widths in stellar spectra is traditionally done by hand or with semi-automatic procedures that are time-consuming and not very robust with respect to the repeatability of the results. The program DAOSPEC is a tool that provides consistent measurements of equivalent widths in stellar spectra while requiring a minimum of user intervention. However, it is not optimised to deal with large batches of spectra, as some parameters still need to be modified and checked by the user. Exploiting the versatility and portability of BASH, we have built a pipeline called DAOSPEC Option Optimiser (DOOp) automating the procedure of equivalent widths measurement with DAOSPEC. DOOp is organised in different modules that run one after the other to perform specific tasks, taking care of the optimisation of the parameters needed to provide the final equivalent widths, and providing log files to ensure better control over the procedure. In this paper, making use of synthetic and observed spectra, we compare the performance of DOOp with other methods, including DAOSPEC used manually. The measurements made by DOOp are identical to the ones produced by DAOSPEC when used manually, while requiring less user intervention, which is convenient when dealing with a large quantity of spectra. DOOp shows its best performance on high-resolution spectra (R>20 000) and high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N>30), with uncertainties ranging from 6 m{\AA} to 2 m{\AA}. The only subjective parameter that remains is the normalisation, as the user still has to make a choice on the order of the polynomial used for the continuum fitting. As a test, we use the equivalent widths measured by DOOp to re-derive the stellar parameters of four well-studied stars.

The large amount of spectra obtained during the epoch of extensive spectroscopic surveys of Galactic stars needs the development of automatic procedures to derive their atmospheric parameters and individual element abundances. Starting from the widely-used code MOOG by C. Sneden, we have developed a new procedure to determine atmospheric parameters and abundances in a fully automatic way. The code FAMA (Fast Automatic MOOG Analysis) is presented describing its approach to derive atmospheric stellar parameters and element abundances. The code, freely distributed, is written in Perl and can be used on different platforms. The aim of FAMA is to render the computation of the atmospheric parameters and abundances of a large number of stars using measurements of equivalent widths as automatic and as independent of any subjective approach as possible. It is based on the simultaneous search for three equilibria: excitation equilibrium, ionization balance, and the relationship between \fei\ and the reduced equivalent widths. FAMA also evaluates the statistical errors on individual element abundances and errors due to the uncertainties in the stellar parameters. The convergence criteria are not fixed 'a priori' but are based on the quality of the spectra. We present radial velocities and chemical abundances for nine stars in the old, distant open clusters Be 18, Be 21, Be 22, Be 32, and PWM 4. For Be 18 and PWM 4, these are the first chemical abundance measurements. Combining our data with literature results produces a compilation of some 68 chemical abundance measurements in 49 unique clusters. For this combined sample, we study the chemical abundances of open clusters as a function of distance, age, and metallicity. We confirm that the metallicity gradient in the outer disk is flatter than the gradient in the vicinity of the solar neighborhood. We also confirm that the open clusters in the outer disk are metal-poor with enhancements in the ratios [alpha/Fe] and perhaps [Eu/Fe]. All elements show negligible or small trends between [X/Fe] and distance (< 0.02 dex/kpc), but for some elements, there is a hint that the local (RGC < 13 kpc) and distant (RGC > 13 kpc) samples may have different trends with distance. There is no evidence for significant abundance trends versus age (< 0.04 dex/Gyr). We measure the linear relation between [X/Fe] and metallicity, [Fe/H], and find that the scatter about the mean trend is comparable to the measurement uncertainties. Comparison with solar neighborhood field giants shows that the open clusters share similar abundance ratios [X/Fe] at a given metallicity. While the flattening of the metallicity gradient and enhanced [alpha/Fe] ratios in the outer disk suggest a different chemical enrichment history to the solar neighborhood, we echo the sentiments expressed by Friel et al. that definitive conclusions await homogeneous analyses of larger samples of stars in larger numbers of clusters. The Galactic Anticenter Stellar Structure (GASS) has been identified with excess surface densities of field stars in several large area sky surveys, and with an unusual, string-like grouping of star clusters. Some members of the cluster grouping have radial velocities (RVs) consistent with the observed GASS velocity-longitude trend. We provide new RV measurements of stars in six clusters that have been suggested to be associated with the GASS. We show that the RVs of at least four clusters are consistent with the previously measured RV trend for GASS.
