Search

Context: Supernovae (SNe) inject large amounts of energy and chemically enriched materials into their surrounding interstellar medium and, in some instances, into molecular clouds (MCs). The interaction of a supernova remnant (SNR) with a MC plays a crucial role in the evolution of the cloud's physical and chemical properties. Despite their importance, only a handful of studies have been made addressing the molecular richness in MCs impacted by SNRs. (Sub)millimter wavelength observations of SNR-MC can be used to build a census of their molecular richness, which in turn can motivate various chemical and physical models aimed at explaining the chemical evolution of the clouds. Aims: We carried out multi-molecule/multi-transition observations toward the region F abutting the SNR W28. We used the detected lines to constrain the physical conditions of this region. Methods: We used the APEX Telescope to observe molecular lines in the frequency from $213\rm{-}374\, \textrm{GHz}$. We used non-LTE RADEX modeling to interpret the observational data. Results: We detected emission from multiple molecular species, namely CH$_{3}$OH, H$_{2}$CO, SO, SiO, CN, CCH, NO, CS, HCO$^+$, HCN, HNC, N$_2$H$^+$, CO, and from isotopologues of some of them. We report the first detection of thermally excited (non-maser) CH$_{3}$OH emission toward a SNR. Employing non-LTE RADEX modeling of multiple H$_{2}$CO and CH$_{3}$OH lines, we constrain the kinetic temperature from 60 to 100$\,$K and the gas density from $9\times 10^{5}$ to $5\times 10^{6}\,\rm cm^{-3}$. We obtained an ortho-para ratio $\sim$2 for H$_{2}$CO, which indicates that formaldehyde is most likely formed on dust grain surfaces. Conclusions: Our results show that molecules as complex as H$_{2}$CO and CH$_{3}$OH can be detected in SNR-MC interactions. Context. Studying the physical and chemical processes leading to the formation of low-mass stars is crucial for understanding the origin of our Sun and the Solar System. In particular, analyzing the emission and absorption lines from molecules to derive their spatial distribution in the envelopes of young stellar objects is a fundamental tool to obtain information on the kinematics and chemistry at the very early stages of star formation. Aims. In this work we aim to examine in detail the spatial structures and molecular abundances of material surrounding the very well-known low-mass binary protostar IRAS 16293-2422 and the prestellar core 16293E, which are embedded in the Lynds 1689 N dark cloud. This analysis is performed to obtain information on the physical and chemical properties of these young objects and their interaction with the molecular outflows present across the region. Methods. We have used the LAsMA heterodyne array installed on the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) 12 meter submillimeter telescope to image a region of about 0.12 × 0.12 pc2 around IRAS 16293-2422 and 16293E and to study their molecular environment covering 45.6 GHz in a frequency range from 277 GHz to 375 GHz. We have also used the APEX FLASH+ receiver to observe and search for molecular lines in a frequency range between 476 GHz to 493 GHz. Results. We have identified 144 transitions from 36 molecular species, including isotopologues. This is the first time that such a large number of species have been mapped at large scales simultaneously in this region. The maps reveal the envelope to have a complex morphology around the cloud cores and the emission peaks known as E1, E2, W1, W2, and HE2, including the outflow structure arising from IRAS 16293-2422. Using several transitions of para-H2CO, we have derived new lower limits for the kinetic temperatures toward IRAS 16293-2422 and the surrounding emission peaks. Based on these temperatures, new column densities for all detected species were derived around the cloud cores and all emission peaks using the radiative transfer codes CLASS-Weeds, CASSIS, and RADEX. We derived H2 volume densities in Lynds 1689 N based on ortho-H2CO transitions with different upper level energies, varying between 5 × 106 cm−3 and 63 K at IRAS 16293-2422 to values on the order of 1 × 106 cm−3 and 35 K at the other emission peaks. Conclusions. Our new observations further confirm the scenario of an outflow arising from IRAS 16293-2422 interacting with the prestellar core 16293E. This is inferred from the velocity and linewidth gradient shown by several deuterated species closer to the outflow-core interaction region in 16293E. We observe a large-scale velocity gradient across the molecular cloud which coincides with the rotation of the envelope around IRAS 16293-2422 reported previously in the literature. A comparison with JCMT SCUBA-2 450 μm dust continuum maps and our data suggests that emission peak W2 may be related to a colder dust source rather than a shocked region. The newly derived column densities and temperatures for different species, combined with the molecular spatial distribution in all sources, indicate clear chemical differences between the protostellar source, the prestellar core and the shocked positions as a result of the diverse physical conditions at different locations in this region.

The morphology of the Milky Way is still a matter of debate. In order to shed light on uncertainties surrounding the structure of the Galaxy, in this paper, we study the imprint of spiral arms on the distribution and properties of its molecular gas. To do so, we take full advantage of the SEDIGISM survey that observed a large area of the inner Galaxy in the $^{13}$CO(2-1) line at an angular resolution of 28". We analyse the influences of the spiral arms by considering the features of the molecular gas emission as a whole across the longitude-velocity map built from the full survey. Additionally, we examine the properties of the molecular clouds in the spiral arms compared to the properties of their counterparts in the inter-arm regions. Through flux and luminosity probability distribution functions, we find that the molecular gas emission associated with the spiral arms does not differ significantly from the emission between the arms. On average, spiral arms show masses per unit length of $\sim10^5-10^6$ M$_{\odot} $kpc$^{-1}$. This is similar to values inferred from data sets in which emission distributions were segmented into molecular clouds. By examining the cloud distribution across the Galactic plane, we infer that the molecular mass in the spiral arms is a factor of 1.5 higher than that of the inter-arm medium, similar to what is found for other spiral galaxies in the local Universe. We observe that only the distributions of cloud mass surface densities and aspect ratio in the spiral arms show significant differences compared to those of the inter-arm medium; other observed differences appear instead to be driven by a distance bias. By comparing our results with simulations and observations of nearby galaxies, we conclude that the measured quantities would classify the Milky Way as a flocculent spiral galaxy, rather than as a grand-design one., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 38 pages (17 of Appendices), 26 figures, 7 tables. Filaments are a ubiquitous morphological feature of the molecular interstellar medium and are identified as sites of star formation. In recent years, more than 100 large-scale filaments (with a length $>10$\,pc) have been observed in the inner Milky Way. As they appear linked to Galactic dynamics, studying those structures represents an opportunity to link kiloparsec-scale phenomena to the physics of star formation, which operates on much smaller scales. In this letter, we use newly acquired Outer Galaxy High Resolution Survey (OGHReS) $^{12}$CO(2-1) data to demonstrate that a significant number of large-scale filaments are present in the outer Galaxy as well. The 37 filaments identified appear tightly associated with inter-arm regions. In addition, their masses and linear masses are, on average, one order of magnitude lower than similar-sized molecular filaments located in the inner Galaxy, showing that Milky Way dynamics is able to create very elongated features in spite of the lower gas supply in the Galactic outskirts., 5 pages (+ appendices, 9 pages), 8 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in A&A Letters

Context. HCN is the most abundant molecule after H$_{2}$ and CO in the circumstellar envelopes (CSEs) of carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. Its rotational lines within vibrationally excited states are exceptional tracers of the innermost region of C-rich CSEs. Aims. We aim to constrain the physical conditions of CSEs of C-rich stars using thermal lines of the HCN molecule. Additionally, we also search for new HCN masers and probe the temporal variations for HCN masers, which should shed light on their pumping mechanisms. Methods. We observed 16 C-rich AGB stars in various HCN rotational transitions within the ground and 12 vibrationally excited states with the APEX 12 m submillimeter telescope. Results. We detect 68 vibrationally excited HCN lines from 13 C-rich stars, including 39 thermal transitions and 29 maser lines, which suggests that vibrationally excited HCN lines are ubiquitous in C-rich stars. Population diagrams constructed, for two objects from the sample, for thermal transitions from different vibrationally excited states give excitation temperature around 800-900 K, confirming that they arise from the hot innermost regions of CSEs (i.e., r10$^{8}$cm$^{-3}$ are required to excite the HCN masers. The electron density ($n_{e^{-}}$) plays an important role in setting the chemistry and physics of the interstellar medium. However, measurements of $n_{e^{-}}$ in neutral clouds have been directly obtained only toward a few lines of sight or they rely on indirect determinations. We use carbon radio recombination lines and the far-infrared lines of C$^{+}$ to directly measure $n_{e^{-}}$ and the gas temperature in the envelope of the integral shaped filament (ISF) in the Orion A molecular cloud. We observed the C$102\alpha$ and C$109\alpha$ carbon radio recombination lines (CRRLs) using the Effelsberg 100m telescope at ~2' resolution toward five positions in OMC-2 and OMC-3. Since the CRRLs have similar line properties, we averaged them to increase the signal-to-noise ratio of the spectra. We compared the intensities of the averaged CRRLs, and the 158 {\mu}m-[CII] and [$^{13}$CII] lines to the predictions of a homogeneous model for the C$^{+}$/C interface in the envelope of a molecular cloud and from this comparison we determined the electron density, temperature and C$^{+}$ column density of the gas. We detect the CRRLs toward four positions, where their velocity and widths (FWHM 2.3 km s$^{-1}$) confirms that they trace the envelope of the ISF. Toward two positions we detect the CRRLs, and the [CII] and [$^{13}$CII] lines with a signal-to-noise ratio >5, and we find $n_{e^{-}}=0.65\pm0.12$ cm$^{-3}$ and $0.95\pm0.02$ cm$^{-3}$, which corresponds to a gas density $n_{H}\approx5\times10^{3}$ cm$^{-3}$ and a thermal pressure of $p_{th}\approx4\times10^{5}$ K cm$^{-3}$. We observed the G305 star forming complex in the $J=3\text{-}2$ lines of $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO to investigate how molecular gas surrounding the central stellar clusters is being impacted by feedback. The APEX telescope's LAsMA multi-beam receiver was used to observe the region. Excitation temperatures and column density maps were produced. Combining our data with data from the SEDIGISM survey resulted in a $^{13}$CO $J=3\text{-}2/2\text{-}1$ excitation map. To verify whether feedback from stellar clusters is responsible for exciting the gas, the distribution of CO excitation was compared with that of 8$\,\mu\rm{m}$ emission imaged with Spitzer, which is dominated by UV-excited emission from PAHs. Line centroid velocities, as well as stacked line profiles were examined to investigate the effect of feedback on the gas dynamics. Line profiles along radially outward directions demonstrate that the excitation temperature and $^{13}$CO $J=3\text{-}2/2\text{-}1$ ratio increase steeply by factors of $\sim\,2-3$ at the edge of the denser gas traced by $^{13}$CO that faces the hot stars at the center of the complex and steadily decreases away from it. Column density also increases at the leading edge, but does not always decrease steadily outward. Regions with higher 8$\,\mu\rm{m}$ flux have higher median excitation temperatures, column densities and $^{13}$CO $J=3\text{-}2/2\text{-}1$ ratio. The centroid velocity probability distribution function of the region shows exponential wings, indicative of turbulence driven by strong stellar winds. Stacked spectra in regions with stronger feedback have higher skewness and narrower peaks with pronounced wings compared to regions with weaker feedback. Surveys of the Milky Way at various wavelengths have changed our view of star formation in our Galaxy considerably in recent years. In this paper we give an overview of the GLOSTAR survey, a new survey covering large parts (145 square degrees) of the northern Galactic plane using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) in the frequency range 4-8 GHz and the Effelsberg 100-m telescope. This provides for the first time a radio survey covering all angular scales down to 1.5 arcsecond, similar to complementary near-IR and mid-IR galactic plane surveys. We outline the main goals of the survey and give a detailed description of the observations and the data reduction strategy. In our observations we covered the radio continuum in full polarization, as well as the 6.7 GHz methanol maser line, the 4.8~GHz formaldehyde line, and seven radio recombination lines. The observations were conducted in the most compact D configuration of the VLA and in the more extended B configuration. This yielded spatial resolutions of 18" and 1.5" for the two configurations, respectively. We also combined the D configuration images with the Effelsberg 100-m data to provide zero spacing information, and we jointly imaged the D- and B-configuration data for optimal sensitivity of the intermediate spatial ranges. The Central Molecular Zone (CMZ), a $\sim$200 pc sized region around the Galactic Centre, is peculiar in that it shows a star formation rate (SFR) that is suppressed with respect to the available dense gas. To study the SFR in the CMZ, young stellar objects (YSOs) can be investigated. Here we present radio observations of 334 2.2 $\mu$m infrared sources that have been identified as YSO candidates. Our goal is to investigate the presence of centimetre wavelength radio continuum counterparts to this sample of YSO candidates which we use to constrain the current SFR in the CMZ. The early B star S1 in the Rho Ophiuchus cloud excites an HII region and illuminates a large egg-shaped photodissociation (PDR) cavity. The PDR is restricted to the west and south-west by the dense molecular Rho Oph A ridge, expanding more freely into the diffuse low density cloud to the north-east. We analyze new SOFIA GREAT, GMRT and APEX data together with archival data from Herschel/PACS, JCMT/HARPS to study the properties of the photo-irradiated ionized and neutral gas in this region. The tracers include [C II] at 158 micron, [O I] at 63 and 145 micron, J=6-5 transitions of CO and 13CO, HCO+ (4-3), radio continuum at 610 and 1420 MHz and HI at 21 cm. The PDR emission is strongly red-shifted to the south-east of the nebula, and primarily blue-shifted on the north western side. The [C II] and and [O I]63 spectra are strongly self-absorbed over most of the PDR. By using the optically thin counterparts, [13C II] and [O I]145 respectively, we conclude that the self-absorption is dominated by the warm (>80 K) foreground PDR gas and not by the surrounding cold molecular cloud. We estimate the column densities of C+ and O of the PDR to be 3e18 and 2e19 cm^-2, respectively. Comparison of stellar far-ultraviolet flux and reprocessed infrared radiation suggest enhanced clumpiness of the gas to the north-west. Analysis of the emission from the PDR gas suggests the presence of at least three density components consisting of high density (10^6 cm^-3) clumps, medium density (10^4 cm^-3) and diffuse (10^3 cm^-3) interclump medium. The medium density component primarily contributes to the thermal pressure of the PDR gas which is in pressure equilibrium with the molecular cloud to the west. Star-formation in the outer Galaxy is thought to be different from the inner Galaxy, as it is subject to different environmental parameters such as metallicity, interstellar radiation field, or mass surface density that all change with Galactocentric radius. We therefore aimed at getting a more detailed view on the structure of the outer Galaxy, determining physical properties for a large number of star forming clumps and understanding star-formation outside the Solar circle. We use pointed $^{12}$CO(2-1) observations conducted with the APEX telescope to determine the velocity components towards 830 dust clumps identified from 250 $\mu$m Herschel/Hi-GAL SPIRE emission maps in the outer Galaxy between $225\deg, Comment: 21 pages, 19 figures

Context. The different theoretical models concerning the formation of high-mass stars make distinct predictions regarding their progenitors, i.e. the high-mass prestellar cores. However, so far no conclusive observation of such objects has been made. Aims. We aim to study the very early stages of high-mass star formation in two infrared-dark, massive clumps, to identify the core population that they harbour. Methods. We obtained ALMA observations of continuum emission at 0.8mm and of the ortho-$\rm H_2D^+$ transition at 372GHz towards the two clumps. We use the SCIMES algorithm to identify cores in the position-position-velocity space, finding 16 cores. We model their observed spectra in the LTE approximation, deriving the centroid velocity, linewidth, and column density maps. We also study the correlation between the continuum and molecular data, which in general do not present the same structure. Results. We report for the first time the detection of ortho-$\rm H_2D^+$ in high-mass star-forming regions performed with an interferometer. The molecular emission shows narrow and subsonic lines, suggesting that locally the temperature of the gas is less than 10K. From the continuum emission we estimate the cores' total masses, and compare them with the respective virial masses. We also compute the volume density values, which are found to be higher than $10^{6}\, \rm cm^{-3}$. Conclusions. Our data confirm that ortho-$\rm H_2D^+$ is an ideal tracer of cold and dense gas. Interestingly, almost all the $\rm H_2D^+$-identified cores are less massive than 13M_sun , with the exception of one core in AG354. Furthermore, most of them are subvirial and larger than their Jeans masses. These results are difficult to explain in the context of the turbulent accretion models, which predict massive and virialised prestellar cores., Comment: Accepted for publications in A&A

The Heterodyne Receiver for Origins (HERO) is the first detailed study of a heterodyne focal plane array receiver for space applications. HERO gives the Origins Space Telescope the capability to observe at very high spectral resolution (R = 107) over an unprecedentedly large far-infrared (FIR) wavelengths range (111 to 617 μm) with high sensitivity, with simultaneous dual polarization and dual-frequency band operation. The design is based on prior successful heterodyne receivers, such as Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared /Herschel, but surpasses it by one to two orders of magnitude by exploiting the latest technological developments. Innovative components are used to keep the required satellite resources low and thus allowing for the first time a convincing design of a large format heterodyne array receiver for space. HERO on Origins is a unique tool to explore the FIR universe and extends the enormous potential of submillimeter astronomical spectroscopy into new areas of astronomical research.

Context. The derived physical parameters for young HII regions are normally determined assuming the emission region to be optically thin. However, this assumption is unlikely to hold for young HII regions such as hyper-compact HII(HCHII) and ultra-compact HII(UCHII) regions and leads to the underestimation of their properties. This can be overcome by fitting the SEDs over a wide range of radio frequencies. Aims. The two primary goals of this study are (1) to determine the physical properties of young HII regions from radio SEDs in the search for potential HCHII regions, and (2) to use these physical properties to investigate their evolution. Method. We used the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) to observe the X-band and K-band with angular resolutions of ~1.7" and ~0.7", respectively, toward 114 HII regions with rising-spectra between 1-5 GHz. We complement our observations with VLA archival data and construct SEDs in the range of 1-26 GHz and model them assuming an ionization-bounded HII region with uniform density. Results. Our sample has a mean electron density of ne=1.6E4cm^{-3}, diameter diam=0.14pc, and emission measure EM = 1.9E7pc*cm^{-6}. We identify 16 HCHII region candidates and 8 intermediate objects between the classes of HCHII and UCHII regions. The ne, diam, and EM change as expected, but the Lyman continuum flux is relatively constant over time. We find that about 67% of Lyman-continuum photons are absorbed by dust within these HII regions and the dust absorption fraction tends to be more significant for more compact and younger HII regions. Conclusion. Young HII regions are commonly located in dusty clumps; HCHII regions and intermediate objects are often associated with various masers, outflows, broad radio recombination lines, and extended green objects, and the accretion at the two stages tends to be quickly reduced or halted., 28pages, 55 figures, 8 tables. Context. The properties of the population of Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) are essential to our understanding of the dynamics of the interstellar medium (ISM) in the Milky Way. However, the completeness of the catalog of Galactic SNRs is expected to be only ${\sim}30\%$, with on order 700 SNRs yet to be detected. Deep interferometric radio continuum surveys of the Galactic plane help in rectifying this apparent deficiency by identifying low surface brightness SNRs and compact SNRs that have not been detected in previous surveys. However, SNRs are routinely confused with H II regions, which can have similar radio morphologies. Radio spectral index, polarization, and emission at mid-infrared (MIR) wavelengths can help distinguish between SNRs and H II regions. Aims. We aim to identify SNR candidates using continuum images from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array GLObal view of the STAR formation in the Milky Way (GLOSTAR) survey. Methods. GLOSTAR is a C-band (4--8 GHz) radio wavelength survey of the Galactic plane covering $358^{\circ} \leq l \leq 60^{\circ}, |b| \leq 1^{\circ}$. The continuum images from this survey, which resulted from observations with the most compact configuration of the array, have an angular resolution of $18''$. We searched for SNRs in these images to identify known SNRs, previously identified SNR candidates, and new SNR candidates. We study these objects in MIR surveys and the GLOSTAR polarization data to classify their emission as thermal or nonthermal. Results. We identify 157 SNR candidates, of which 80 are new. Polarization measurements provide evidence of nonthermal emission from 9 of these candidates. We find that two previously identified candidates are filaments. We also detect emission from 91 of the 94 known SNRs in the survey region. Four of these are reclassified as H II regions following detection in MIR surveys. Context: The formation of high-mass star-forming regions from their parental gas cloud and the subsequent fragmentation processes lie at the heart of star formation research. Aims: We aim to study the dynamical and fragmentation properties at very early evolutionary stages of high-mass star formation. Methods: Employing the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) and the IRAM 30m telescope, we observed two young high-mass star-forming regions, ISOSS22478 and ISOSS23053, in the 1.3mm continuum and spectral line emission at a high angular resolution (~0.8''). Results: We resolved 29 cores that are mostly located along filament-like structures. Depending on the temperature assumption, these cores follow a mass-size relation of approximately M~r^2.0, corresponding to constant mean column densities. However, with different temperature assumptions, a steeper mass-size relation up to M~r^3.0, which would be more likely to correspond to constant mean volume densities, cannot be ruled out. The correlation of the core masses with their nearest neighbor separations is consistent with thermal Jeans fragmentation. We found hardly any core separations at the spatial resolution limit, indicating that the data resolve the large-scale fragmentation well. Although the kinematics of the two regions appear very different at first sight - multiple velocity components along filaments in ISOSS22478 versus a steep velocity gradient of more than 50km/s/pc in ISOSS23053 - the findings can be explained within the framework of a dynamical cloud collapse scenario. Conclusions: While our data are consistent with a dynamical cloud collapse scenario and subsequent thermal Jeans fragmentation, the importance of additional environmental properties, such as the magnetization of the gas or external shocks triggering converging gas flows, is nonetheless not as well constrained and would require future investigation., Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures, accepted for Astronomy and Astrophysics, a higher-resolution version can also be found at https://www.mpia.de/homes/beuther/papers.html

Aims. Current star formation research centers the characterization of the physical and chemical properties of massive stars, which are in the process of formation, at the spatial resolution of individual high-mass cores. Methods. We use sub-arcsecond resolution (~0.′′4) observations with the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array at 1.37 mm to study the dust emission and molecular gas of 18 high-mass star-forming regions. With distances in the range of 0.7−5.5 kpc, this corresponds to spatial scales down to 300−2300 au that are resolved by our observations. We combined the derived physical and chemical properties of individual cores in these regions to estimate their ages. The temperature structures of these regions are determined by fitting the H2CO and CH3CN line emission. The density profiles are inferred from the 1.37 mm continuum visibilities. The column densities of 11 different species are determined by fitting the emission lines with XCLASS. Results. Within the 18 observed regions, we identified 22 individual cores with associated 1.37 mm continuum emission and with a radially decreasing temperature profile. We find an average temperature power-law index of q = 0.4 ± 0.1 and an average density power-law index of p = 2.0 ± 0.2 on scales that are on the order of several 1000 au. Comparing these results with values of p derived from the literature presumes that the density profiles remain unchanged from clump to core scales. The column densities relative to N(C18O) between pairs of dense gas tracers show tight correlations. We applied the physical-chemical model MUlti Stage ChemicaL codE to the derived column densities of each core and find a mean chemical age of ~60 000 yr and an age spread of 20 000−100 000 yr. With this paper, we release all data products of the CORE project. Conclusions. The CORE sample reveals well-constrained density and temperature power-law distributions. Furthermore, we characterized a large variety in molecular richness that can be explained by an age spread that is then confirmed by our physical-chemical modeling. The hot molecular cores show the greatest number of emission lines, but we also find evolved cores at an evolutionary stage in which most molecules are destroyed and, thus, the spectra appear line-poor once again.

Ten protostellar outflows in the Orion molecular clouds were mapped in the $^{12}$CO/$^{13}$CO ${J=6\rightarrow5}$ and $^{12}$CO ${J=7\rightarrow6}$ lines. The maps of these mid-$J$ CO lines have an angular resolution of about 10$''$ and a typical field size of about 100$''$. Physical parameters of the molecular outflows were derived, including mass transfer rates, kinetic luminosities, and outflow forces. The outflow sample was expanded by re-analyzing archival data of nearby low-luminosity protostars, to cover a wide range of bolometric luminosities. Outflow parameters derived from other transitions of CO were compared. The mid-$J$ ($J_{\rm up} \approx 6$) and low-$J$ ($J_{\rm up} \leq 3$) CO line wings trace essentially the same outflow component. By contrast, the high-$J$ (up to $J_{\rm up} \approx 50$) line-emission luminosity of CO shows little correlation with the kinetic luminosity from the ${J=6\rightarrow5}$ line, which suggests that they trace distinct components. The low/mid-$J$ CO line wings trace long-term outflow behaviors while the high-$J$ CO lines are sensitive to short-term activities. The SEDIGISM (Structure, Excitation and Dynamics of the Inner Galactic Interstellar Medium) survey used the APEX telescope to map 84 deg^2 of the Galactic plane between l = -60 deg and l = +31 deg in several molecular transitions, including 13CO(2-1) and C18O(2-1), thus probing the moderately dense (~10^3 cm^-3) component of the interstellar medium. With an angular resolution of 30'' and a typical 1-sigma sensitivity of 0.8-1.0 K at 0.25 km/s velocity resolution, it gives access to a wide range of structures, from individual star-forming clumps to giant molecular clouds and complexes. The coverage includes a good fraction of the first and fourth Galactic quadrants, allowing us to constrain the large scale distribution of cold molecular gas in the inner Galaxy. In this paper we provide an updated overview of the full survey and the data reduction procedures used. We also assess the quality of these data and describe the data products that are being made publicly available as part of this first data release (DR1). We present integrated maps and position-velocity maps of the molecular gas and use these to investigate the correlation between the molecular gas and the large scale structural features of the Milky Way such as the spiral arms, Galactic bar and Galactic centre. We find that approximately 60 per cent of the molecular gas is associated with the spiral arms and these appear as strong intensity peaks in the derived Galactocentric distribution. We also find strong peaks in intensity at specific longitudes that correspond to the Galactic centre and well known star forming complexes, revealing that the 13CO emission is concentrated in a small number of complexes rather than evenly distributed along spiral arms., MNRAS, in press

At a distance of 2.4kpc, W33 is an outstanding massive and luminous 10pc sized star forming complex containing quiescent infrared dark clouds as well as highly active infrared bright cloud cores heated by young massive stars. We report measurements of ammonia (NH$_3$) inversion lines in the frequency range 18--26GHz, obtained with the 40" resolution of the 100 m Effelsberg telescope. We have detected the ($J$, $K$)=(1,1), (2,2), (3,3), (4,4), (5,5), (6,6), (2,1) and (3,2) transitions. There is a maser line in the (3,3) transition towards W33 Main. Brightness temperature and line shape indicate no significant variation during the last $\sim$36yr. We have determined kinetic temperatures, column densities and other physical properties of NH$_3$ and the molecular clouds in W33. For the total-NH$_3$ column density, we find for 40"(0.5pc) sized regions 6.0($\pm$2.1)$\times$10$^{14}$, 3.5($\pm$0.1)$\times$10$^{15}$, 3.4($\pm$0.2)$\times$10$^{15}$, 3.1($\pm$0.2)$\times$10$^{15}$, 2.8($\pm$0.2)$\times$10$^{15}$ and 2.0($\pm$0.2)$\times$10$^{15}$cm$^{-2}$ at the peak positions of W33 Main, W33 A, W33 B, W33 Main1, W33 A1 and W33 B1, respectively. W33 Main has a total-NH$_3$ fractional abundance of 1.3($\pm$0.1)$\times$10$^{-9}$ at the peak position. High values of 1.4($\pm$0.3)$\times$10$^{-8}$, 1.6($\pm$0.3)$\times$10$^{-8}$, 3.4($\pm$0.5)$\times$10$^{-8}$, 1.6($\pm$0.5)$\times$10$^{-8}$ and 4.0($\pm$1.2)$\times$10$^{-8}$ are obtained at the central positions of W33 A, W33 B, W33 Main1, W33 A1, and W33 B1. From this, we confirm the already previously proposed different evolutionary stages of the six W33 clumps and find that there is no hot core in the region approaching the extreme conditions encountered in W51-IRS2 or Sgr B2. The ortho-to-para-NH$_3$ abundance ratios suggest that ammonia should have been formed in the gas phase or on dust grain mantles at kinetic temperatures of $\gtrsim$20K., Comment: 30 pages, 21 figures, accepted by A&A

The Serpens filament, a prominent elongated structure in a relatively nearby molecular cloud, is believed to be at an early evolutionary stage, so studying its physical and chemical properties can shed light on filament formation and early evolution. The main goal is to address the physical and chemical properties as well as the dynamical state of the Serpens filament at a spatial resolution of $\sim$0.07 pc and a spectral resolution of $\lesssim$0.1~km~s$^{-1}$. We performed $^{13}$CO (1--0), C$^{18}$O (1--0), C$^{17}$O (1--0), $^{13}$CO (2--1), C$^{18}$O (2--1), and C$^{17}$O (2--1) imaging observations toward the Serpens filament with the Institut de Radioastronomie Millim{\'e}trique 30-m (IRAM-30 m) and Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX) telescopes. Widespread narrow $^{13}$CO (2--1) self-absorption is observed in this filament, causing the $^{13}$CO morphology to be different from the filamentary structure traced by C$^{18}$O and C$^{17}$O. Our excitation analysis suggests that the opacities of C$^{18}$O transitions become higher than unity in most regions, and this analysis confirms the presence of widespread CO depletion. Further we show that the local velocity gradients have a tendency to be perpendicular to the filament's long axis in the outskirts and parallel to the large-scale magnetic field direction. The magnitudes of the local velocity gradients decrease toward the filament's crest. The observed velocity structure can be a result of gravity-driven accretion flows. The isochronic evolutionary track of the C$^{18}$O freeze-out process indicates the filament is young with an age of $\lesssim$2 Myr. We use the 13CO(2-1) emission from the SEDIGISM high-resolution spectral-line survey of the inner Galaxy, to extract the molecular cloud population with a large dynamic range in spatial scales, using the SCIMES algorithm. This work compiles a cloud catalogue with a total of 10663 molecular clouds, 10300 of which we were able to assign distances and compute physical properties. We study some of the global properties of clouds using a science sample, consisting of 6664 well resolved sources and for which the distance estimates are reliable. In particular, we compare the scaling relations retrieved from SEDIGISM to those of other surveys, and we explore the properties of clouds with and without high-mass star formation. Our results suggest that there is no single global property of a cloud that determines its ability to form massive stars, although we find combined trends of increasing mass, size, surface density and velocity dispersion for the sub-sample of clouds with ongoing high-mass star formation. We then isolate the most extreme clouds in the SEDIGISM sample (i.e. clouds in the tails of the distributions) to look at their overall Galactic distribution, in search for hints of environmental effects. We find that, for most properties, the Galactic distribution of the most extreme clouds is only marginally different to that of the global cloud population. The Galactic distribution of the largest clouds, the turbulent clouds and the high-mass star-forming clouds are those that deviate most significantly from the global cloud population. We also find that the least dynamically active clouds (with low velocity dispersion or low virial parameter) are situated further afield, mostly in the least populated areas. Following up on our discovery of terahertz water masers, reported in 2017, we report two further detections of water maser emission at frequencies above 1 THz. Using the GREAT instrument on SOFIA, we have detected emission in the 1.296411 THz $8_{27}-7_{34}$ transition of water toward two additional oxygen-rich evolved stars, omicron Ceti (Mira) and R Crateris, and obtained an upper limit on the 1.296 THz line emission from U Orionis. Toward these three sources, and toward the red supergiant star VY Canis Majorae from which 1.296 THz line emission was reported previously, we have also observed several lower-frequency (sub)millimeter water maser transitions using the APEX 12-m telescope along with the 22 GHz transition using the Effelsberg 100-m telescope. We have used a simple model to analyse the multi-transition data thereby obtained. Adopting, as a prior, independent literature estimates of the mass-loss-rates in these four sources and in W Hydrae, we infer water abundances in a remarkably narrow range: $n({\rm H_2O})/n({\rm H_2}) = 1.4 - 2.5 \times 10^{-4}$. For o Cet, VY CMa, and W Hya, the model is successful in predicting the maser line fluxes to within a typical factor $\sim 1.6 - 3$. For R Crt and U Ori, the model is less successful, with typical line flux predictions lying an order of magnitude above or below the observations; such discrepancies are perhaps unsurprising given the exponential nature of maser amplification., 37 pages, including 10 figures. FEEDBACK is a SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy) legacy program dedicated to study the interaction of massive stars with their environment. It performs a survey of 11 galactic high mass star-forming regions in the 158 μm (1.9 THz) line of [C II] and the 63 μm (4.7 THz) line of [O I]. We employ the 14 pixel Low Frequency Array and 7 pixel High Frequency Array upGREAT heterodyne instrument to spectrally resolve (0.24 MHz) these far-infrared fine structure lines. With a total observing time of 96h, we will cover ∼6700 arcmin2 at 14 1) angular resolution for the [C II] line and 6 3 for the [O I] line. The observations started in spring 2019 (Cycle 7). Our aim is to understand the dynamics in regions dominated by different feedback processes from massive stars such as stellar winds, thermal expansion, and radiation pressure, and to quantify the mechanical energy injection and radiative heating efficiency. This is an important science topic because feedback of massive stars on their environment regulates the physical conditions and sets the emission characteristics in the interstellar medium (ISM), influences the star formation activity through molecular cloud dissolution and compression processes, and drives the evolution of the ISM in galaxies. The [C II] line provides the kinematics of the gas and is one of the dominant cooling lines of gas for low to moderate densities and UV fields. The [O I] line traces warm and high-density gas, excited in photodissociations regions with a strong UV field or by shocks. The source sample spans a broad range in stellar characteristics from single OB stars, to small groups of O stars, to rich young stellar clusters, to ministarburst complexes. It contains well-known targets such as Aquila, the Cygnus X region, M16, M17, NGC7538, NGC6334, Vela, and W43 as well as a selection of H II region bubbles, namely RCW49, RCW79, and RCW120. These [C II] maps, together with the less explored [O I] 63 μm line, provide an outstanding database for the community. They will be made publically available and will trigger further studies and follow-up observations.

The current generation of (sub)mm-telescopes has allowed molecular line emission to become a major tool for studying the physical, kinematic, and chemical properties of extragalactic systems, yet exploiting these observations requires a detailed understanding of where emission lines originate within the Milky Way. In this paper, we present 60$^{\prime\prime}$ ($\sim$3pc) resolution observations of many 3mm-band molecular lines across a large map of the W49 massive star-forming region ($\sim$100$\times$100pc at 11kpc), which were taken as part of the "LEGO" IRAM-30m large project. We find that the spatial extent or brightness of the molecular line transitions are not well correlated with their critical densities, highlighting abundance and optical depth must be considered when estimating line emission characteristics. We explore how the total emission and emission efficiency (i.e. line brightness per H$_{2}$ column density) of the line emission vary as a function of molecular hydrogen column density and dust temperature. We find that there is not a single region of this parameter space responsible for the brightest and most efficiently emitting gas for all species. For example, we find that the HCN transition shows high emission efficiency at high column density ($10^{22}$cm$^{-2}$) and moderate temperatures (35K), whilst e.g. N$_2$H$^+$ emits most efficiently towards lower temperatures ($10^{22}$cm$^{-2}$, Comment: 33+2 pages, 17+3 figures, 4+4 tables. We mapped the kinetic temperature structure of Orion KL in a $\sim$20$''$ ($\sim$8000 AU) sized region with para-H$_{2}$CS $7_{07}-6_{06}$, $7_{26}-6_{25}$, and $7_{25}-6_{24}$ making use of ALMA Band 6 Science Verification data. The kinetic temperatures obtained with a resolution of $1\hbox{$\,.\!\!^{\prime\prime}$}65$$\times$$1\hbox{$\,.\!\!^{\prime\prime}$}14$ ($\sim$550 AU) are deduced by modeling the measured averaged velocity-integrated intensity ratios of para-H$_2$CS $7_{26}-6_{25}/7_{07}-6_{06}$ and $7_{25}-6_{24}/7_{07}-6_{06}$ with a RADEX non-LTE model. The kinetic temperatures of the dense gas, derived from the para-H$_2$CS line ratios at a spatial density of 10$^7$ cm$^{-3}$, are high, ranging from 43 to $>$500 K with an unweighted average of $\sim$170 K. There is no evidence for internal sources playing an important role in the heating of the various structures identified in previous work, namely the elongated ridge, the northwestern clump, and the eastern region of the compact ridge, while the high temperatures in the western region of the compact ridge may be dominated by internal massive star formation. Significant gradients of kinetic temperature along molecular filaments traced by H$_2$CS indicate that the dense gas is heated by the shocks induced by the enigmatic explosive event, which occurred several hundred years ago greatly affecting the energetics of the Orion KL region. Thus, with the notable exception of the western region of the compact ridge, the high temperatures of the dense gas in Orion KL are probably caused by shocks from the explosive event, leading to a dominant component of externally heated dense gas., Accepted for publication to ApJ

We aim to characterize the outflow properties of a sample of early Class 0 phase low-mass protostars in Orion first identified by the Herschel Space Observatory. We also look for signatures of infall in key molecular lines. CO $J$=3-2 and $J$=4-3 maps toward 16 very young Class 0 protostars were obtained using the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX) telescope. We search the data for line wings indicative of outflows and calculate masses, velocities, and dynamical times for the outflows. We use additional HCO$^+$, H$^{13}$CO$^+$, and NH$_3$ lines to look for infall signatures toward the protostars. We estimate the outflow masses, forces, and mass-loss rates based on the CO $J$=3-2 and $J$=4-3 line intensities for 8 sources with detected outflows. We derive upper limits for the outflow masses and forces of sources without clear outflow detections. The total outflow masses for the sources with clear outflow detections are in the range between 0.03 and 0.16 $M_\odot$ for CO $J$=3-2, and in the range between 0.02 and 0.10 $M_\odot$ for CO $J$=4-3. The outflow forces are in the range between $1.57\times10^{-4}$ and $1.16\times10^{-3}$ $M_\odot$ km s$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$ for CO $J$=3-2 and in the range between $1.14\times10^{-4}$ and $6.92\times10^{-4}$ $M_\odot$ km s$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$ for CO $J$=4-3. Nine protostars in our sample show asymmetric line profiles indicative of infall in HCO$^+$, compared to H$^{13}$CO$^+$ or NH$_3$. The outflow forces of the protostars in our sample show no correlation with the bolometric luminosity, unlike those found by some earlier studies for other Class 0 protostars. The derived outflow forces for the sources with detected outflows are similar to those found for other - more evolved - Class 0 protostars, suggesting that outflows develop quickly in the Class 0 phase., Accepted for publication in A&A

We have conducted a survey of 328 protostars in the Orion molecular clouds with ALMA at 0.87 mm at a resolution of $\sim$0.1" (40 au), including observations with the VLA at 9 mm toward 148 protostars at a resolution of $\sim$0.08" (32 au). This is the largest multi-wavelength survey of protostars at this resolution by an order of magnitude. We use the dust continuum emission at 0.87 mm and 9 mm to measure the dust disk radii and masses toward the Class 0, Class I, and Flat Spectrum protostars, characterizing the evolution of these disk properties in the protostellar phase. The mean dust disk radii for the Class 0, Class I, and Flat Spectrum protostars are 44.9$^{+5.8}_{-3.4}$, 37.0$^{+4.9}_{-3.0}$, and 28.5$^{+3.7}_{-2.3}$ au, respectively, and the mean protostellar dust disk masses are 25.9$^{+7.7}_{-4.0}$, 14.9$^{+3.8}_{-2.2}$, 11.6$^{+3.5}_{-1.9}$ Earth masses, respectively. The decrease in dust disk masses is expected from disk evolution and accretion, but the decrease in disk radii may point to the initial conditions of star formation not leading to the systematic growth of disk radii or that radial drift is keeping the dust disk sizes small. At least 146 protostellar disks (35% out of 379 detected 0.87 mm continuum sources plus 42 non-detections) have disk radii greater than 50 au in our sample. These properties are not found to vary significantly between different regions within Orion. In recent years, a plethora of observations with high spectral resolution of sub-millimetre and far-infrared transitions of methylidene (CH), conducted with Herschel and SOFIA, have demonstrated this radical to be a valuable proxy for molecular hydrogen that can be used for characterising molecular gas within the interstellar medium on a Galactic scale, including the CO-dark component. We report the discovery of the 13CH isotopologue in the interstellar medium using the upGREAT receiver on board SOFIA. We have detected the three hyperfine structure components of the ≈2 THz frequency transition from its X2Π1∕2 ground-state towards the high-mass star-forming regions Sgr B2(M), G34.26+0.15, W49(N), and W51E and determined 13CH column densities. The ubiquity of molecules containing carbon in the interstellar medium has turned the determination of the ratio between the abundances of the two stable isotopes of carbon, 12C/13C, into a cornerstone for Galactic chemical evolution studies. Whilst displaying a rising gradient with galactocentric distance, this ratio, when measured using observations of different molecules (CO, H2CO, and others), shows systematic variations depending on the tracer used. These observed inconsistencies may arise from optical depth effects, chemical fractionation, or isotope-selective photo-dissociation. Formed from C+ either through UV-driven or turbulence-driven chemistry, CH reflects the fractionation of C+, and does not show any significant fractionation effects, unlike other molecules that were previously used to determine the 12C/13C isotopic ratio. This makes it an ideal tracer for the 12C/13C ratio throughout the Galaxy. By comparing the derived column densities of 13CH with previously obtained SOFIA data of the corresponding transitions of the main isotopologue 12CH, we therefore derive 12C/13C isotopic ratios toward Sgr B2(M), G34.26+0.15, W49(N) and W51E. Adding our values derived from 12∕13CH to previous calculations of the Galactic isotopic gradient, we derive a revised value of 12C/13C = 5.87(0.45)RGC + 13.25(2.94).

We study ten molecular transitions obtained from an unbiased 3 mm molecular line survey using the IRAM 30 m telescope toward 409 compact dust clumps identified by the APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy (ATLASGAL) to understand photodissociation regions (PDRs) associated with the clumps. The main goal of this study is to investigate whether the abundances of the selected molecules show any variations resulting from the PDR chemistry in different clump environments. We selected HCO, HOC$^+$, C$_{2}$H, c-C$_{3}$H$_{2}$, CN, H$^{13}$CN, HC$^{15}$N, and HN$^{13}$C as PDR tracers, and H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$ and C$^{18}$O as dense gas tracers. We find that the abundances of HCO, CN, C$_{2}$H and c-C$_{3}$H$_{2}$ decrease as the H$_{2}$ column density increase, indicating high visual extinction, while those of high density tracers (i.e., H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$ and HC$^{15}$N) are constant. In addition, $N$(HCO)/$N$(H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$) ratios significantly decrease as H$_{2}$ column density increase, and in particular, 82 clumps have $X$(HCO) $\gtrsim 10^{-10}$ and $N$(HCO)/$N$(H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$) $\gtrsim 1$, which are the indication of far-ultraviolet (FUV) chemistry. This suggests the observed HCO abundances are likely associated with FUV radiation illuminating the PDRs. We also find that high $N$(c-C$_{3}$H$_{2}$)/$N$(C$_{2}$H) ratios found for HII regions having high HCO abundances ($\gtrsim\,10^{-10}$) are associated with more evolved clumps with high $L_{\rm bol}$/$M_{\rm clump}$. This trend might be associated with gain-surface processes, which determine initial abundances of these molecules, and time-dependent effects in the clumps corresponding to the envelopes around dense PDRs and HII regions. In addition, some fraction of the measured abundances of the small hydrocarbons of the HII sources can be the result of the photodissociation of PAH molecules., Comment: 19 pages, 16 figures, 7 tables. (Abridged) We present a large sample of o-H$_2$D$^+$ observations in high-mass star-forming regions and discuss possible empirical correlations with relevant physical quantities to assess its role as a chronometer of star-forming regions through different evolutionary stages. APEX observations of the ground-state transition of o-H$_2$D$^+$ were analysed in a sample of massive clumps selected from ATLASGAL at different evolutionary stages. Column densities and beam-averaged abundances of o-H$_2$D$^+$ with respect to H$_2$, $X$(o-H$_2$D$^+$), were obtained by modelling the spectra under the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium. We detect 16 sources in o-H$_2$D$^+$ and find clear correlations between $X$(o-H$_2$D$^+$) and the clump bolometric luminosity and the dust temperature, while only a mild correlation is found with the CO-depletion factor. In addition, we see a clear correlation with the luminosity-to-mass ratio, which is known to trace the evolution of the star formation process. This would indicate that the deuterated forms of H$_3^+$ are more abundant in the early stages of the star formation process and that deuteration is influenced by the time evolution of the clumps. In this respect, our findings would suggest that the $X$(o-H$_2$D$^+$) abundance is mainly affected by the thermal changes rather than density changes in the gas. We have employed these findings together with observations of H$^{13}$CO$^+$, DCO$^+$, and C$^{17}$O to provide an estimate of the cosmic-ray ionisation rate in a sub-sample of eight clumps based on recent analytical work. Our study presents the largest sample of o-H$_2$D$^+$ in star-forming regions to date. The results confirm that the deuteration process is strongly affected by temperature and suggests that o-H$_2$D$^+$ can be considered a reliable chemical clock during the star formation processes, as proved by its strong temporal dependence., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures and 6 tables. Context. Classical hot cores are rich in molecular emission, and they show a high abundance of complex organic molecules (COMs). The emergence of molecular complexity that is represented by COMs, in particular, is poorly constrained in the early evolution of hot cores. Aims. We put observational constraints on the physical location of COMs in a resolved high-mass protostellar envelope associated with the G328.2551−0.5321 clump. The protostar is single down to ~400 au scales and we resolved the envelope structure down to this scale. Methods. High angular resolution observations using the Atacama Large Millimeter Array allowed us to resolve the structure of the inner envelope and pin down the emission region of COMs. We use local thermodynamic equilibrium modelling of the available 7.5 GHz bandwidth around ~345 GHz to identify the COMs towards two accretion shocks and a selected position representing the bulk emission of the inner envelope. We quantitatively discuss the derived molecular column densities and abundances towards these positions, and use our line identification to qualitatively compare this to the emission of COMs seen towards the central position, corresponding to the protostar and its accretion disk. Results. We detect emission from 10 COMs, and identify a line of deuterated water (HDO). In addition to methanol (CH3OH), methyl formate (CH3OCHO) and formamide (HC(O)NH2) have the most extended emission. Together with HDO, these molecules are found to be associated with both the accretion shocks and the inner envelope, which has a moderate temperature of Tkin ~ 110 K. We find a significant difference in the distribution of COMs. O-bearing COMs, such as ethanol, acetone, and ethylene glycol are almost exclusively found and show a higher abundance towards the accretion shocks with Tkin ~ 180 K. Whereas N-bearing COMs with a CN group, such as vinyl and ethyl cyanide peak on the central position, thus the protostar and the accretion disk. The molecular composition is similar towards the two shock positions, while it is significantly different towards the inner envelope, suggesting an increase in abundance of O-bearing COMs towards the accretion shocks. Conclusions. We present the first observational evidence for a large column density of COMs seen towards accretion shocks at the centrifugal barrier at the inner envelope. The overall molecular emission shows increased molecular abundances of COMs towards the accretion shocks compared to the inner envelope. The bulk of the gas from the inner envelope is still at a moderate temperature of Tkin ~ 110 K, and we find that the radiatively heated inner region is very compact (

We present a detailed observational and modeling study of the hot core VLA 3 in the high-mass star-forming region AFGL 2591, which is a target region of the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) large program CORE. Using NOEMA observations at 1.37 mm with an angular resolution of ~0."42 (1 400 au at 3.33 kpc), we derived the physical and chemical structure of the source. We modeled the observed molecular abundances with the chemical evolution code MUSCLE (MUlti Stage ChemicaL codE). Results. With the kinetic temperature tracers CH3CN and H2CO we observe a temperature distribution with a power-law index of q = 0.41+-0.08. Using the visibilities of the continuum emission we derive a density structure with a power-law index of p = 1.7+-0.1. The hot core spectra reveal high molecular abundances and a rich diversity in complex molecules. The majority of the molecules have an asymmetric spatial distribution around the forming protostar(s), which indicates a complex physical structure on scales < 1 400 au. Using MUSCLE, we are able to explain the observed molecular abundance of 10 out of 14 modeled species at an estimated hot core chemical age of ~21 100 years. In contrast to the observational analysis, our chemical modeling predicts a lower density power-law index of p < 1.4. Reasons for this discrepancy are discussed. Conclusions. Combining high spatial resolution observations with detailed chemical modeling allows us to derive a concise picture of the physical and chemical structure of the famous AFGL 2591 hot core. The next steps are to conduct a similar analysis for the whole CORE sample, and then use this analysis to constrain the chemical diversity in high-mass star formation to a much greater depth., 22 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

G305 star-forming complex was observed in the 3-2 lines of 12 & 13CO to investigate the effect of feedback from the central OB stars on the complex. The region was decomposed into clumps using dendrogram analysis. A catalog of the clump properties was created. The surface mass densities of the clumps were plotted as a function of the incident 8um flux. A mask of the region with 8um flux >100 MJy/sr was created and clumps were categorized based on the extent of overlap with the mask into "mostly inside" , "partly inside'", & "outside". The surface mass density distribution of each of these populations were plotted. This was followed by comparing the G305 clumps with the Galactic average taken from the ATLASGAL and CHIMPS clumps. Finally, the cumulative distribution functions (CDF) of the clump masses in G305 and their L/M ratios were compared to that of the Galactic sample. The surface mass densities of clumps showed a positive correlation with the incident 8um flux. The data did not have sufficient velocity resolution to discern the effects of feedback on the linewidths of the clumps. The sub-sample of clumps named "mostly inside" had the highest surface mass densities followed by "partly inside" and "outside" sub-samples. These differences between the three sub-samples were shown to be statistically significant using the KS test. The "mostly inside" sample also showed the highest level of fragmentation compared to the other two. These prove that the clumps inside the G305 region are triggered. The G305 clump population is also statistically different from the Galactic average population rejecting redistribution as a likely consequence of feedback. The CDFs of clump masses and their L/M ratios are both flatter than the Galactic average, indicating that feedback in G305 has triggered star formation. The Cygnus X complex is covered by the Global View of Star Formation in the Milky Way (GLOSTAR) survey, an unbiased radio-wavelength Galactic plane survey, in 4--8 GHz continuum radiation and several spectral lines. The GLOSTAR survey observed the 6.7~GHz transition of methanol (CH$_3$OH), an exclusive tracer of high-mass young stellar objects. Using the Very Large Array in both the B and D configurations, we observed an area in Cygnus~X of $7^{\rm o}\times3^{\rm o}$ in size and simultaneously covered the methanol line and the continuum, allowing cross-registration. We detected thirteen sources with Class~II methanol maser emission and one source with methanol absorption. Two methanol maser sources are newly detected; in addition, we found four new velocity components associated with known masers. Five masers are concentrated in the DR21 ridge and W75N. We determined the characteristics of the detected masers and investigated the association with infrared, (sub)millimeter, and radio continuum emission. All maser sources are associated with (sub)millimeter dust continuum emission, which is consistent with the picture of masers tracing regions in an active stage of star formation. On the other hand, only five masers ($38\pm17\%$) have radio continuum counterparts seen with GLOSTAR within $\sim$1$''$, testifying to their youth. Comparing the distributions of the bolometric luminosity and the luminosity-to-mass ratio of cores that host 6.7~GHz methanol masers with those of the full core population, we identified lower limits $L_{\rm Bol}\sim200~L_\odot$ and $L_{\rm Bol}/M_{\rm core}\sim1~L_\odot~M^{-1}_\odot$ for a dust source to host maser emission., To be published in A&A. Context. Deuteration has been used as a tracer of the evolutionary phases of low- and high-mass star formation. The APEX Telescope Large Area Survey (ATLASGAL) provides an important repository for a detailed statistical study of massive star-forming clumps in the inner Galactic disc at different evolutionary phases. Aims. We study the amount of deuteration using NH2D in a representative sample of high-mass clumps discovered by the ATLASGAL survey covering various evolutionary phases of massive star formation. The deuterium fraction of NH3 is derived from the NH2D 111−101 ortho transition at ~86 GHz and NH2D 111−101 para line at ~110 GHz. This is refined for the first time by measuring the NH2D excitation temperature directly with the NH2D 212–202 para transition at ~74 GHz. Any variation of NH3 deuteration and ortho-to-para ratio with the evolutionary sequence is analysed. Methods. Unbiased spectral line surveys at 3 mm were conducted towards ATLASGAL clumps between 85 and 93 GHz with the Mopra telescope and from 84 to 115 GHz using the IRAM 30m telescope. A subsample was followed up in the NH2D transition at 74 GHz with the IRAM 30m telescope. We determined the deuterium fractionation from the column density ratio of NH2D and NH3 and measured the NH2D excitation temperature for the first time from the simultaneous modelling of the 74 and 110 GHz line using MCWeeds. We searched for trends in NH3 deuteration with the evolutionary sequence of massive star formation. We derived the column density ratio from the 86 and 110 GHz transitions as an estimate of the NH2D ortho-to-para ratio. Results. We find a large range of the NH2D to NH3 column density ratio up to 1.6 ± 0.7 indicating a high degree of NH3 deuteration in a subsample of the clumps. Our analysis yields a clear difference between NH3 and NH2D rotational temperatures for a fraction. We therefore advocate observation of the NH2D transitions at 74 and 110 GHz simultaneously to determine the NH2D temperature directly. We determine a median ortho-to-para column density ratio of 3.7 ± 1.2. Conclusions. The high detection rate of NH2D confirms a high deuteration previously found in massive star-forming clumps. Using the excitation temperature of NH2D instead of NH3 is needed to avoid an overestimation of deuteration. We measure a higher detection rate of NH2D in sources at early evolutionary stages. The deuterium fractionation shows no correlation with evolutionary tracers such as the NH3 (1,1) line width, or rotational temperature.

Abridged: ATLASGAL is an unbiased 870 micron submillimetre survey of the inner Galactic plane. It provides a large and systematic inventory of all massive, dense clumps in the Galaxy (>1000 Msun) and includes representative samples of all embedded stages of high-mass star formation. Here we present the first detailed census of the properties (velocities, distances, luminosities and masses) and spatial distribution of a complete sample of ~8000 dense clumps located in the Galactic disk. We derive highly reliable velocities and distances to ~97% of the sample and use mid- and far-infrared survey data to develop an evolutionary classification scheme that we apply to the whole sample. Comparing the evolutionary subsamples reveals trends for increasing dust temperatures, luminosities and line-widths as a function of evolution indicating that the feedback from the embedded proto-clusters is having a significant impact on the structure and dynamics of their natal clumps. We find 88\,per\,cent are already associated with star formation at some level. We also find the clump mass to be independent of evolution suggesting that the clumps form with the majority of their mass in-situ. We estimate the statistical lifetime of the quiescent stage to be ~5 x 10^4 yr for clump masses ~1000 Msun decreasing to ~1 x 10^4 yr for clump masses >10000 Msun. We find a strong correlation between the fraction of clumps associated with massive stars and peak column density. The fraction is initially small at low column densities but reaching 100\,per\,cent for column densities above 10^{23} cm^{-2}; there are no clumps with column density clumps above this value that are not already associated with massive star formation. All of the evidence is consistent with a dynamic view of star formation wherein the clumps form rapidly and are initially very unstable so that star formation quickly ensues., Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Context The Vela Molecular Ridge is one of the nearest (700 pc) giant molecular cloud (GMC) complexes hosting intermediate-mass (up to early B, late O stars) star formation, and is located in the outer Galaxy, inside the Galactic plane. Vela C is one of the GMCs making up the Vela Molecular Ridge, and exhibits both sub-regions of robust and sub-regions of more quiescent star formation activity, with both low- and intermediate(high)-mass star formation in progress. Aims We aim to study the individual and global properties of dense dust cores in Vela C, and aim to search for spatial variations in these properties which could be related to different environmental properties and/or evolutionary stages in the various sub-regions of Vela C. Methods We mapped the submillimetre (345 GHz) emission from vela C with LABOCA (beam size 19.2", spatial resolution ~0.07 pc at 700 pc) at the APEX telescope. We used the clump-finding algorithm CuTEx to identify the compact submillimetre sources. We also used SIMBA (250 GHz) observations, and Herschel and WISE ancillary data. The association with WISE red sources allowed the protostellar and starless cores to be separated, whereas the Herschel dataset allowed the dust temperature to be derived for a fraction of cores. The protostellar and starless core mass functions (CMFs) were constructed following two different approaches, achieving a mass completeness limit of 3.7 Msun. Results We retrieved 549 submillimetre cores, 316 of which are starless and mostly gravitationally bound (therefore prestellar in nature). Both the protostellar and the starless CMFs are consistent with the shape of a Salpeter initial mass function in the high-mass part of the distribution. Clustering of cores at scales of 1--6 pc is also found, hinting at fractionation of magnetised, turbulent gas., Comment: 21 pages, 19 figures, to be published in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We have constructed the largest sample of dust-associated class II 6.7 GHz methanol masers yet obtained. New measurements from the the Methanol MultiBeam (MMB) Survey were combined with the 870 $\mu$m APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy (ATLASGAL) and the 850 $\mu$m JCMT Plane Survey (JPS). Together with two previous studies we have now identified the host clumps for 958 methanol masers across the Galactic Plane, covering approximately 99% of the MMB catalogue and increasing the known sample of dust-associated masers by over 30%. We investigate correlations between the physical properties of the clumps and masers using distances and luminosities drawn from the literature. Clumps hosting methanol masers are significantly more compact and have higher volume densities than the general population of clumps. We determine a minimum volume density threshold of $n$(H$_2$) $\geq 10^4$ cm$^{-3}$ for the efficient formation of intermediate- and high-mass stars. We find 6.7 GHz methanol masers are associated with a distinct part of the evolutionary process ($L_{\rm bol}$/$M_{\rm fwhm}$ ratios of between 10$^{0.6}$ and 10$^{2.2}$) and have well defined turning on and termination points. We estimate the lower limit for the mass of embedded objects to be $\geq$ 6 M$_{\odot}$ and the statistical lifetime of the methanol maser stage to be $\sim$ 3.3$\times$10$^{4}$ yrs. In this study we analyze 70 radio continuum sources associated with dust clumps and considered to be candidates for the earliest stages of high-mass star formation. We have conducted a 3-mm molecular-line survey towards 570 high-mass star-forming clumps, using the Mopra telescope. The sample is selected from the 10,000 clumps identified by the ATLASGAL survey and includes all of the most important embedded evolutionary stages associated with massive star formation, classified into five distinct categories (quiescent, protostellar, young stellar objects, \hii\ regions and photo-dominated regions). The observations were performed in broadband mode with frequency coverage of 85.2 to 93.4\,GHz and a velocity resolution of $\sim$0.9\,\kms, detecting emission from 26 different transitions. We find significant evolutionary trends in the detection rates, integrated line intensities, and abundances of many of the transitions and also identify a couple of molecules that appear to be invariant to changes in the dust temperature and evolutionary stage (N$_2$H$^+$\,(1-0) and HN$^{13}$C\,(1-0)). We use the K-ladders for CH$_3$C$_2$H\,(5-4) and CH$_3$CH\,(5-4) to calculate the rotation temperatures and find $\sim$1/3 of the quiescent clumps have rotation temperatures that suggest the presence of an internal heating source. These sources may constitute a population of very young protostellar objects that are still dark at 70\,\mum\ and suggest that the fraction of truly quiescent clumps may only be a few per cent. Context. In cold and dense gas prior to the formation of young stellar objects, heavy molecular species (including CO) are accreted onto dust grains. Under these conditions H3+ and its deuterated isotopologues become more abundant, enhancing the deuterium fraction of molecules such as N2H+ that are formed via ion-neutral reactions. Because this process is extremely temperature sensitive, the abundance of these species is likely linked to the evolutionary stage of the source. Aims. We investigate how the abundances of o-H2D+ and N2D+ vary with evolution in high-mass clumps. Methods. We observed with APEX the ground-state transitions of o-H2D+ near 372 GHz, and N2D+(3–2) near 231 GHz for three massive clumps in different evolutionary stages. The sources were selected within the G351.77–0.51 complex to minimise the variation of initial chemical conditions, and to remove distance effects. We modelled their dust continuum emission to estimate their physical properties, and also modelled their spectra under the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium to calculate beam-averaged abundances. Results. We find an anticorrelation between the abundance of o-H2D+ and that of N2D+, with the former decreasing and the latter increasing with evolution. With the new observations we are also able to provide a qualitative upper limit to the age of the youngest clump of about 105 yr, comparable to its current free-fall time. Conclusions. We can explain the evolution of the two tracers with simple considerations on the chemical formation paths, depletion of heavy elements, and evaporation from the grains. We therefore propose that the joint observation and the relative abundance of o-H2D+ and N2D+ can act as an efficient tracer of the evolutionary stages of the star-formation process.

The structure formation of the dense interstellar material and the fragmentation of clumps into cores is a fundamental step to understand how stars and stellar clusters form. We aim to establish a statistical view of clump fragmentation at sub-parsec scales based on a large sample of massive clumps selected from the ATLASGAL survey. We used the APEX/SABOCA camera at 350 $\mu$m to image clumps at a resolution of 8.$''$5. The majority of the sample consists of massive clumps that are weak or in absorption at 24 $\mu$m. We resolve rich filamentary structures and identify the population of compact sources. We use association with mid-infrared 22-24 $\mu$m and 70 $\mu$m point sources to pin down the star formation activity of the cores. We then statistically assess their physical properties, and the fragmentation characteristics of massive clumps. We find a moderate correlation between the clump fragmentation levels with the clump gas density and the predicted number of fragments with pure Jeans fragmentation scenario; we find a strong correlation between the mass of the most massive fragment and the total clump mass, suggesting that the self-gravity may play an important role in the clumps' small scale structure formation. We identify 27 massive quiescent cores with $M_{\rm core}>100$ M$_{\odot}$ within 5 kpc; these are massive enough to be self-gravitating but do not yet show any sign of star-formation. Hydrocarbons are ubiquitous in the interstellar medium, but their formation is still not well understood, depending on the physical environment they are found in. M8 is host to one of the brightest HII regions and PDRs in our galaxy. Using the APEX, and the IRAM 30 m telescopes, we performed a line survey toward Herschel 36 (Her 36), which is the main ionizing stellar system in M8, and an imaging survey within 1.3 $\times$ 1.3 pc around Her 36 of various transitions of C$_{2}$H and c-C$_{3}$H$_{2}$. We used both LTE and non-LTE methods to determine the physical conditions of the emitting gas along with the column densities and abundances of the observed species, which we compared with (updated) gas phase photochemical PDR models. In order to examine the role of PAHs in the formation of small hydrocarbons and to investigate their association with M8, we compared archival GLIMPSE 8 $\mu$m and the SPIRE 250 $\mu$m continuum images with the C$_{2}$H emission maps. We observed a total of three rotational transitions of C$_{2}$H with their hyperfine structure components and four rotational transitions of c-C$_{3}$H$_{2}$ with ortho and para symmetries toward M8. Fragmentation of PAHs seems less likely to contribute to the formation of small hydrocarbons as the 8 $\mu$m emission does not follow the distribution of C$_{2}$H emission, which is more associated with the molecular cloud. From the quantitative analysis, we obtained abundances of $\sim$ 10$^{-8}$ and 10$^{-9}$ for C$_{2}$H and c-C$_{3}$H$_{2}$ respectively, and volume densities of the hydrocarbon emitting gas in the range $n(\rm H_2)$ $\sim$ 5 $\times$ 10$^{4}$--5 $\times$ 10$^{6}$ cm$^{-3}$. The observed column densities of C$_{2}$H and c-C$_3$H$_{2}$ are reproduced reasonably well by our PDR models. This supports the idea that in high-UV flux PDRs, gas phase chemistry is sufficient to explain hydrocarbon abundances., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures
