18. The Large Space Telescope - A new adventure

Abstract

A description is presented of the Large Space Telescope (LST), which will be launched in 1982 and can accomodate four scientific instruments at any given time, permitting spectrographic and photometric observations between 1200 A in the UV and 1 mm in the IR. Basic elements of the LST are the optical telescope assembly, the scientific instruments (cameras, spectrographs, photometers, and an astrometer), and the support-systems module. Developmental as well as observational considerations are discussed, including various approaches to testing, maintenance, data transmission and processing, instrument calibration, housekeeping, and refurbishment. A possible mission scenario is outlined.

Abstract

The total mission scenario from Shuttle/LST (Large Space Telescope) integration to ground return is described. The LST is to contain near-diffraction-limited, 2.4-m optics and a variety of instruments that will allow it to make observations from the ultraviolet to the infrared regions. Particular attention is given to the most important aspect of the LST development planning, which consists in the design for change in both configuration and operation. The discussion covers mission objectives, planning for scientific observation, and support operations. The inherent characteristics of the periodic Space Shuttle revisits and earth return capability provide the LST with a capability for growth that should be incorporated into every phase of its development.

Abstract

This article presents information on the magnetic bubble memory. The magnetic bubble is the unit of information storage in a magnetic bubble memory. It is a cylindrical magnetic domain that resides in a thin film or platelet of magnetic material. The magnetization is oriented normal to the surface. An essential feature of a bubble material is a uniaxial anisotropy that maintains this magnetization orientation. The first bubble materials were thin platelets of orthoferrite in which bubbles, typically tens of microns in diameter, can be created. The orthoferrites soon gave way to thin films of magnetic garnet epitaxially grown on single crystal substrates of gadolinium gallium garnet.
