Using Andreev reflection (AR) as an experimental gauge of the superconducting proximity effect (PE), we assess the topological purity of the superconductivity that is induced by the c-axis PE between an s-wave superconductor and the topological insulators Bi$_{2}$X$_{3}$ (X=Se,Te). Point-contact AR spectroscopy is performed with Nb tips on Bi$_{2}$X$_{3}$ single crystals at 4.2 K. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy is also used, to locate the Fermi level $E_F$ relative to the Dirac point in the crystals. The AR data is analyzed with Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk theory, taking into account tip-induced spin-orbit coupling, Fermi-surface mismatch, and the co-presence of bulk band and topological surface states at $E_F$. Our results indicate that the superconductivity that can be proximity-induced into Bi$_{2}$X$_{3}$ is predominantly non-topological.

We report real-space evidence for an in-plane vortex lattice (VL) transition in the multiband superconductor 2H-NbSe2, observed by laterally imaging subsurface vortices with scanning tunneling spectroscopy. With magnetic field applied || ab-surface up to 6.5 T at 300 mK, spatial maps of the zero-bias conductance revealed a stripe pattern whose dominant periodicity showed a discrete shift near 0.7 T. The stripes can be interpreted as the surface projection of a distorted hexagonal VL that undergoes a first-order reorientation transition. This transition occurs for field || [100] but not [110], and is correlated with the multigap characteristics seen in the heat capacity and thermal transport data. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy was performed on single crystals of superconducting 2H-NbSe2, at 300 mK and in a magnetic field, up to 5 T, applied parallel to the ab-plane. This novel field geometry allows the quasiparticle density-of-states spectrum to be measured under finite superfluid momentum, while avoiding contributions from the vortex-core bound states. At zero field, we observed a fully-gapped conductance spectrum with both gap-edge peaks and sub-gap kinks. These spectral features show a systematic evolution with the applied field: the kinks close in while the peaks move apart in low fields, and the zero-bias conductance has a two-sloped behavior over the entire field range, though dipping anomalously at 0.7 T. Our data was analyzed with recent theoretical models for quasiparticle tunneling into a current-carrying superconductor, and yielded distinct evidence for multiple superconducting gaps coming from various Fermi-surface sheets of different topologies, as well as possible implications on the origin of the coexisting charge-density-wave order., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

By spatially mapping the Doppler effect of an in-plane magnetic field on the quasiparticle tunneling spectrum, we have laterally imaged the vortex lattice in superconducting 2H-NbSe2. Cryomagnetic scanning tunneling spectroscopy was performed at 300 mK on the ab-surface oriented parallel to the field H. Conductance images at zero bias show stripe patterns running along H, with the stripe separation varying as H^-0.5. Regions of higher zero-bias conductance show lower gap-edge conductance, consistent with spectral redistribution by spatially-modulated superfluid momentum. Our results are interpreted in terms of the interaction between vortical and screening currents, and demonstrate a general method for probing subsurface vortices., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Applied Physics Letters

Recent experimental studies have indicated novel superconducting proximity effects in thin-film heterostructures comprising ferromagnetic manganites and superconducting cuprates. To look for such effects microscopically, we performed scanning tunneling spectroscopy on La$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$/YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ (LCMO/YBCO) bilayer thin films. $\emph{c}$-axis oriented films of varying thickness were grown on SrTiO$_{3}$ substrates using pulsed laser-ablated deposition. Heteroepitaxiality of the films was confirmed by cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy. Tunneling spectra were measured at 4.2 K, and analyzed for signatures of a pairing gap on the LCMO layer. For bilayer samples with LCMO thickness down to 5nm, asymmetric conductance spectra characteristic of single-layer LCMO films were observed, showing no clear gap structures. These observations are consistent with a very short-range proximity effect involving spin-singlet pairs, and difficult to reconcile with longer-range proximity scenarios involving spin-triplet pairs., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures
