Abstract

Combining elastic incoherent neutron scattering experiments at different resolutions with molecular dynamics simulations, we report the observation of a protein-like dynamical transition in linear chains of Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide). We identify the onset of the transition at a temperature $T_d$ of about 225~K. Thanks to a novel global fit procedure, we find quantitative agreement between measured and calculated polymer mean-squared displacements at all temperatures and time resolutions. Our results confirm the generality of the dynamical transition in macromolecular systems in aqueous environments, independently of the internal polymer topology.

3. Experiences of the Doctoral Journey: A Cross-National Perspective

Abstract

A strong body of evidence shows that doctoral student experiences are shaped by both individual factors and socio-cultural contexts. However, we know little about the differences and similarities of such experiences across different socio-cultural contexts. To contribute to the understanding on contextual and invariants of doctoral experience, we surveyed doctoral students' key experiences in two different socio-cultural contexts: two research-intensive universities in South Africa and Finland. The results indicate that both positive and negative student experiences shape doctoral education across institutions, disciplines and national contexts. The research supports the notion of the doctorate as a socio-cultural experience ranging from individual learning through experience, to relational enculturation into the wider scholarly community. The findings provide the basis for understanding the doctoral experience as a force shaping doctoral education systems.

Abstract

The study of hyperfine interaction by high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering is not very well known compared to the other competing techniques viz. NMR, M\"ossbauer, PACS etc. Also the study is limited mostly to magnetically ordered systems. Here we report such study on Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$FeCoO$_6$ (x = 0, 1, 2) of which first (Sr$_2$FeCoO$_6$ with x = 0) has a canonical spin spin glass, the second (SrLaFeCoO$_6$ with x = 1) has a so-called magnetic glass and the third (La$_2$FeCoO$_6$ with x = 2) has a magnetically ordered ground state. Our present study revealed clear inelastic signal for SrLaFeCoO$_6$, possibly also inelastic signal for Sr$_2$FeCoO$_6$ below the spin freezing temperatures $T_{sf}$ but no inelastic signal at all for for the magnetically ordered La$_2$FeCoO$_6$ in the neutron scattering spectra. The broadened inelastic signals observed suggest hyperfine field distribution in the two disordered magnetic glassy systems and no signal for the third compound suggests no or very small hyperfine field at the Co nucleus due to Co electronic moment. For the two magnetic glassy system apart from the hyperfine signal due only to Co, we also observed electronic spin fluctuations probably from both Fe and Co electronic moments. \end{abstract}

6. A Return to Wonderland: Exploring the Links between Academic Identity Development and Creativity during Doctoral Education

Abstract

Creativity is essential to knowledge production within universities and beyond. Yet, conditions for creativity receive scant scholarly attention as a feature of doctoral development, or as an element of institutional evolution within higher education. Even fewer authors have considered how creativity may be linked to doctoral students' academic identity formation. In this paper, we analyse literature on creativity related to doctoral education for exploring the links to doctoral students' academic identity formation. Building on the theoretical notions of social identity, role identity, and personal identity our results reveal three key links between creativity and academic identity formation in doctoral education: 'Becoming a responsible scholar' (connected to social identity), 'Acting with informed agency' (connected to role identity), and 'Expressing the individual voice' (connected to personal identity). Each of these paths to a creative and academic identity formation is coupled with social interaction that paves the way for certain doctoral pedagogies.

Abstract

We report measurements performed on a polycrystalline sample of the pyrochlore compound Nd2Sn2O7. It undergoes a second order magnetic phase transition at Tc ~ 0.91 K to a noncoplanar all-in-all-out magnetic structure of the Nd3+ magnetic moments. The thermal behavior of the low temperature specific heat fingerprints excitations with linear dispersion in a three-dimensional lattice. The temperature independent spin-lattice relaxation rate measured below Tc and the anomalously slow paramagnetic spin dynamics detected up to ~ 30 Tc are suggested to be due to magnetic short-range correlations in unidimensional spin clusters, i.e., spin loops. The observation of a spontaneous field in muon spin relaxation measurements is associated with the absence of a divergence-free field for the ground state of an all-in-all-out pyrochlore magnet as predicted recently., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We investigated the low energy excitations in the parent compound NdFeAsO of the Fe-pnictide superconductor in the $\mu$eV range by a back scattering neutron spectrometer. The energy scans on a powder NdFeAsO sample revealed inelastic peaks at E = 1.600 $ \pm 0.003 \mu$eV at T = 0.055 K on both energy gain and energy loss sides. The inelastic peaks move gradually towards lower energy with increasing temperature and finally merge with the elastic peak at about 6 K. We interpret the inelastic peaks to be due to the transition between hyperfine-split nuclear level of the $^{143}$Nd and $^{145}$Nd isotopes with spin $I = 7/2$. The hyperfine field is produced by the ordering of the electronic magnetic moment of Nd at low temperature and thus the present investigation gives direct evidence of the ordering of the Nd magnetic sublattice of NdFeAsO at low temperature.

We have investigated the low energy nuclear spin excitations in NdMn$_2$Si$_2$ and NdMn$_2$Ge$_2$ by high resolution inelastic neutron scattering. Previous neutron diffraction investigations gave ambiguous results about Nd magnetic ordering at low temperatures. The present element-specific technique gave direct evidence for the magnetic ordering of Nd ions. We found considerable difference in the process of the Nd magnetic ordering at low temperature in NdMn$_2$Si$_2$ and NdMn$_2$Ge$_2$. Our results are consistent with those of magnetization and recent neutron diffraction measurements.

Abstract

By taking advantage of the molecular weight dependence of the glass transition of polymers and their ability to form perfectly miscible blends, we propose a way to modify the fragility of a system, from fragile to strong, keeping the same glass properties, i.e. vibrational density of states, mean-square displacement and local structure. Both slow and fast dynamics are investigated by calorimetry and neutron scattering in an athermal polystyrene/oligomer blend, and compared to those of a pure 17-mer polystyrene considered to be a reference, of same Tg. Whereas the blend and the pure 17-mer have the same heat capacity in the glass and in the liquid, their fragilities differ strongly. This difference in fragility is related to an extra configurational entropy created by the mixing process and acting at a scale much larger than the interchain distance, without affecting the fast dynamics and the structure of the glass.

Abstract

The mean-square displacement (MSD) was measured by neutron scattering at various temperatures and pressures for a number of molecular glass-forming liquids. The MSD is invariant along the glass-transition line at the pressure studied, thus establishing an ``intrinsic'' Lindemann criterion for any given liquid. A one-to-one connection between the MSD's temperature dependence and the liquid's fragility is found when the MSD is evaluated on a time scale of approximately 4 nanoseconds, but does not hold when the MSD is evaluated at shorter times. The findings are discussed in terms of the elastic model and the role of relaxations, and the correlations between slow and fast dynamics are addressed., Comment: accepted by Phys Rev E (2010)

Abstract

We present a neutron scattering investigation on methyl group dynamics in glassy toluene confined in mesoporous silicates of different pore sizes. The experimental results have been analysed in terms of a barrier distribution model, such a distribution following from the structural disorder in the glassy state. Confinement results in a strong decreasing of the average rotational barrier in comparison to the bulk state. We have roughly separated the distribution for the confined state in a bulk-like and a surface-like contribution, corresponding to rotors at a distance from the pore wall respectively larger and smaller than the spatial range of the interactions which contribute to the rotational potential for the methyl groups. We have estimated a distance of 7 Amstrong as a lower limit of the interaction range, beyond the typical nearest-neighbour distance between centers-of-mass (4.7 Amstrong)., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

We present a systematic study on the effect of water on the microscopic dynamics of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate by means of quasielastic neutron scattering. By mixing the ionic liquid with either heavy or light water, the different contributions to the quasielastic broadening could be identified and treated separately. This study was performed at room temperature, which is more than 15 °C above the demixing line. Our results show that even small amounts of water accelerate the diffusion mechanisms considerably. While samples with small water percentage reveal a diffusion process confined within ionic liquid nanodomains, an admixture of more than 15 wt. % water relieves the confinement. Furthermore, the presence of two water species was identified: one behaving as free water, whereas the other was interpreted as a component bound to the ionic liquid motion. Based on the fact that water preferentially binds to the BF4 anion, which itself has a negligible contribution to the scattered intensity, our experiments reveal unprecedented information about the microscopic anion dynamics. 19. Writing for Publication: An Intervention to Overcome Barriers to Scholarly Writing

Abstract

Academics are actively encouraged to disseminate new knowledge to the scientific community by publishing in scholarly journals. External and internal barriers to writing, however, prevent many authors from writing for publication. This article gives an account of an intervention to provide hands-on coaching to inexperienced academic authors. Seventy four five-day workshops have been presented to over 1 000 participants from different disciplines in Southern Africa since 2005. External barriers to being published were identified through a survey of academic journal editors' experiences of common errors made by authors. Internal barriers were identified through literature as well as from reflection on practice during the course of the interventions. Two follow-up web-based surveys, after two and four years respectively, investigated the experiences of workshop participants. Survey findings reveal authors' experiences of writing and identify perceived benefits of skills learned during the workshop. A framework is proposed which could guide planning and implementation of similar interventions. The research suggests that facilitating development of skills through a workshop of this nature helps to overcome barriers to writing for publication, thus improving scholarship in higher education. Abstract

International audience; This article documents how the COVID-19 crisis has affected the drinking behavior of Latin European wine consumers. Using a large online survey conducted during the first lockdown in France, Italy, Portugal, and Spain (n = 7,324 individuals), we reconstruct the purchasing and consumption patterns of the respondents. The number of people who maintained their wine consumption frequency is significantly higher than those who increased or decreased their consumption. Wine consumption frequency held up better than other types of alcohol (beer and spirits). We analyze heterogeneities among countries and individuals by employing the Marascuilo procedure and an ordered logit model. The latter identifies the impact of demographic, commercial, and psychosocial factors on wine consumption frequency. The results shed light on changes in wine consumer behavior during the first lockdown and consider possible post-lockdown trends that could be useful to industry players. Abstract

A strong body of evidence shows that doctoral student experiences are shaped by both individual factors and socio-cultural contexts. However, we know little about the differences and similarities of such experiences across different socio-cultural contexts. To contribute to the understanding on contextual and invariants of doctoral experience, we surveyed doctoral students' key experiences in two different socio-cultural contexts: two research-intensive universities in South Africa and Finland. The results indicate that both positive and negative student experiences shape doctoral education across institutions, disciplines and national contexts. The research supports the notion of the doctorate as a socio-cultural experience ranging from individual learning through experience, to relational enculturation into the wider scholarly community.
