Ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in the Coma cluster have velocity dispersion profiles that are in full agreement with the predictions of Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) in isolation. However, the external field effect (EFE) from the cluster seriously deteriorates this agreement. It has been suggested that this could be related to the fact that UDGs are out-of-equilibrium objects whose stars have been heated by the cluster tides or that they recently fell onto the cluster on radial orbits, such that their velocity dispersion may not reflect the EFE at their instantaneous distance from the cluster center. Here, we simulate UDGs within the Coma cluster in MOND, using the Phantom of Ramses (\textsc{por}) code, and show that if UDGs are initially at equilibrium within the cluster, tides are not sufficient to increase their velocity dispersions to values as high as the observed ones. On the other hand, if they are on a first radial infall onto the cluster, they can keep high velocity dispersions without being destroyed until their first pericentric passage. We conclude that, without alterations such as a screening of the EFE in galaxy clusters or much higher baryonic masses than currently estimated, in the MOND context UDGs must be out-of-equilibrium objects on their first infall onto the cluster., Comment: 10 Pages, 9 Figures, accepted by A&A

The interstellar medium of galaxies is composed of multiple phases, including molecular, atomic, and ionized gas, as well as dust. Stars are formed within this medium from cold molecular gas clouds, which collapse due to their gravitational attraction. Throughout their life, stars emit strong radiation fields and stellar winds, and they can also explode as supernovae at the end of their life. These processes contribute to stirring the turbulent interstellar medium and regulate star formation by heating up, ionizing, and expelling part of the gas. However, star formation does not proceed uniformly throughout the history of the Universe and decrease by an order of magnitude in the last ten billion years. To understand this winding-down of star formation and assess possible variations in the efficiency of star formation, it is crucial to probe the molecular gas reservoirs from which stars are formed. In this article following my presentation at the 10th International Conference on Frontiers of Plasma Physics and Technology held in Kathmandu from 13-17 March 2023, I review some aspects of the multiphase interstellar medium and star formation, with an emphasis on the interplay between neutral and ionized phases, and present recent and ongoing observations of the molecular gas content in typical star-forming galaxies across cosmic time and in different environments. It is well established that black holes reside in the central regions of virtually all types of known galaxies. Recent observational and numerical studies however challenge this picture, suggesting that intermediate-mass black holes in dwarf galaxies may be found on orbits far from the center. In particular, constant-density cores minimize orbital energy losses due to dynamical friction, and allow black holes to settle on stable off-center orbits. Using controlled simulations, we study the dynamics of off-center black holes in dwarf galaxies with such cores. We propose a new scenario to describe off-center mergers of massive black holes, starting with a Jacobi capture. We focus on initially circular and co-planar black hole orbits and explore a large parameter space of black hole masses and orbital parameters. We find that Jacobi captures are a complex and chaotic phenomenon that occurs in about 13% of cases in this simplified setup, and we quantify how the likelihood of capture depends on the simulation parameters. We note that this percentage is likely an upper limit of the general case. Nevertheless, we show that Jacobi captures in cored dwarf galaxies can facilitate the formation of off-center black hole binaries, and that this process is sufficiently common to have a substantial effect on black hole growth. While our setup only allows for temporary captures, we expect dissipative forces from baryons and post-Newtonian corrections to maintain the captures over time and to lead to the formation of stable binary systems. This motivates future studies of the effectiveness of such dissipative forces, within stripped nuclei or globular clusters, in forming stable bound systems., Comment: 16 pages, 17 figures and 2 tables. The scaling relations between the gas content and star formation rate of galaxies provide useful insights into processes governing their formation and evolution. We investigate the emergence and the physical drivers of the global Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) relation at $0.25 \leq z \leq 4$ in the cosmological hydrodynamic simulation NewHorizon capturing the evolution of a few hundred galaxies with a resolution of $\sim$ 40 pc. The details of this relation vary strongly with the stellar mass of galaxies and the redshift. A power-law relation $\Sigma_{\rm SFR} \propto \Sigma_{\rm gas}^{a}$ with $a \approx 1.4$, like that found empirically, emerges at $z \approx 2 - 3$ for the most massive half of the galaxy population. However, no such convergence is found in the lower-mass galaxies, for which the relation gets shallower with decreasing redshift. At the galactic scale, the star formation activity correlates with the level of turbulence of the interstellar medium, quantified by the Mach number, rather than with the gas fraction (neutral or molecular), confirming previous works. With decreasing redshift, the number of outliers with short depletion times diminishes, reducing the scatter of the KS relation, while the overall population of galaxies shifts toward low densities. Using pc-scale star formation models calibrated with local Universe physics, our results demonstrate that the cosmological evolution of the environmental and intrinsic conditions conspire to converge towards a significant and detectable imprint in galactic-scale observables, in their scaling relations, and in their reduced scatter., Comment: 26 pages, 22 figures

Observed scaling relations in galaxies between baryons and dark matter global properties are key to shed light on the process of galaxy formation and on the nature of dark matter. Here, we study the scaling relation between the neutral hydrogen (HI) and dark matter mass in isolated rotationally-supported disk galaxies at low redshift. We first show that state-of-the-art galaxy formation simulations predict that the HI-to-dark halo mass ratio decreases with stellar mass for the most massive disk galaxies. We then infer dark matter halo masses from high-quality rotation curve data for isolated disk galaxies in the local Universe, and report on the actual universality of the HI-to-dark halo mass ratio for these observed galaxies. This scaling relation holds for disks spanning a range of 4 orders of magnitude in stellar mass and 3 orders of magnitude in surface brightness. Accounting for the diversity of rotation curve shapes in our observational fits decreases the scatter of the HI-to-dark halo mass ratio while keeping it constant. This finding extends the previously reported discrepancy for the stellar-to-halo mass relation of massive disk galaxies within galaxy formation simulations to the realm of neutral atomic gas. Our result reveals that isolated galaxies with regularly rotating extended HI disks are surprisingly self-similar up to high masses, which hints at mass-independent self-regulation mechanisms that have yet to be fully understood., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures. We utilize high-resolution cosmological simulations to reveal that high-redshift galaxies tend to undergo a robust `wet compaction' event when near a `golden' stellar mass of $\sim 10^{10} M_{\odot}$. This is a gaseous shrinkage to a compact star-forming phase, a `blue nugget' (BN), followed by central quenching of star formation to a compact passive stellar bulge, a `red nugget' (RN), and a buildup of an extended gaseous disc and ring. Such nuggets are observed at cosmic noon and seed today's early-type galaxies. The compaction is triggered by a drastic loss of angular momentum due to, e.g., wet mergers, counter-rotating cold streams, or violent disc instability. The BN phase marks drastic transitions in the galaxy structural, compositional and kinematic properties. The transitions are from star-forming to quenched inside-out, from diffuse to compact with an extended disc-ring and a stellar envelope, from dark matter to baryon central dominance, from prolate to oblate stellar shape, from pressure to rotation support, from low to high metallicity, and from supernova to AGN feedback. The central black hole growth, first suppressed by supernova feedback when below the golden mass, is boosted by the compaction, and the black hole keeps growing once the halo is massive enough to lock in the supernova ejecta., Comment: 33 pages, 26 figures in the main body (49 pages, 45 figures including appendix). The cold dark matter (CDM) structure formation scenario faces challenges on (sub)galactic scales, central among them being the `cusp-core' problem. A known remedy, driving CDM out of galactic centres, invokes interactions with baryons, through fluctuations in the gravitational potential arising from feedback or orbiting clumps of gas or stars. Here we interpret core formation in a hydrodynamic simulation in terms of a theoretical formulation, which may be considered a generalisation of Chandrasekhar's theory of two body relaxation to the case when the density fluctuations do not arise from white noise; it presents a simple characterisation of the effects of complex hydrodynamics and `subgrid physics'. The power spectrum of gaseous fluctuations is found to follow a power law over a range of scales, appropriate for a fully turbulent compressible medium. The potential fluctuations leading to core formation are nearly normally distributed, which allows for the energy transfer leading to core formation to be described as a standard diffusion process, initially increasing the velocity dispersion of test particles as in Chandrasekhar's theory. We calculate the energy transfer from the fluctuating gas to the halo and find it consistent with theoretical expectations. We also examine how the initial kinetic energy input to halo particles is redistributed to form a core. The temporal mass decrease inside the forming core may be fit by an exponential form; a simple prescription based on our model associates the characteristic timescale with an energy relaxation time. Lyman Break Galaxy (LBG) candidates at z>10 are rapidly being identified in JWST/NIRCam observations. Due to the (redshifted) break produced by neutral hydrogen absorption of rest-frame UV photons, these sources are expected to drop out in the bluer filters while being well detected in redder filters. However, here we show that dust-enshrouded star-forming galaxies at lower redshifts (z<7) may also mimic the near-infrared (near-IR) colors of z>10 LBGs, representing potential contaminants in LBG candidate samples. First, we analyze CEERS-DSFG-1, a NIRCam dropout undetected in the F115W and F150W filters but detected at longer wavelengths. Combining the JWST data with (sub)millimeter constraints, including deep NOEMA interferometric observations, we show that this source is a dusty star-forming galaxy (DSFG) at z~5.1. We also present a tentative 2.6sigma SCUBA-2 detection at 850um around a recently identified z~16 LBG candidate in the same field and show that, if the emission is real and associated with this candidate, the available photometry is consistent with a z~5 dusty galaxy with strong nebular emission lines despite its blue near-IR colors. Further observations on this candidate are imperative to mitigate the low confidence of this tentative submillimeter emission and its positional uncertainty. Our analysis shows that robust (sub)millimeter detections of NIRCam dropout galaxies likely imply z=4-6 redshift solutions, where the observed near-IR break would be the result of a strong rest-frame optical Balmer break combined with high dust attenuation and strong nebular line emission, rather than the rest-frame UV Lyman break. We report the discovery of a candidate galaxy with a photo-z of z~12 in the first epoch of the JWST Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) Survey. Following conservative selection criteria we identify a source with a robust z_phot = 11.8^+0.3_-0.2 (1-sigma uncertainty) with m_F200W=27.3, and >7-sigma detections in five filters. The source is not detected at lambda < 1.4um in deep imaging from both HST and JWST, and has faint ~3-sigma detections in JWST F150W and HST F160W, which signal a Ly-alpha break near the red edge of both filters, implying z~12. This object (Maisie's Galaxy) exhibits F115W-F200W > 1.9 mag (2-sigma lower limit) with a blue continuum slope, resulting in 99.6% of the photo-z PDF favoring z > 11. All data quality images show no artifacts at the candidate's position, and independent analyses consistently find a strong preference for z > 11. Its colors are inconsistent with Galactic stars, and it is resolved (r_h = 340 +/- 14 pc). Maisie's Galaxy has log M*/Msol ~ 8.5 and is highly star-forming (log sSFR ~ -8.2 yr^-1), with a blue rest-UV color (beta ~ -2.5) indicating little dust though not extremely low metallicity. While the presence of this source is in tension with most predictions, it agrees with empirical extrapolations assuming UV luminosity functions which smoothly decline with increasing redshift. Should followup spectroscopy validate this redshift, our Universe was already aglow with galaxies less than 400 Myr after the Big Bang., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables, ApJL in press. We propose an analytic model, CuspCore II, for the response of dark matter (DM) haloes to central gas ejection, as a mechanism for generating DM-deficient cores in dwarfs and high-z massive galaxies. We test this model and three other methods using idealized N-body simulations. The current model is physically justified and provides more accurate predictions than the earlier version, CuspCore I (Freundlich et al. 2020). The CuspCore model assumes an instantaneous change of potential, followed by a relaxation to a new Jeans equilibrium. The relaxation turns out to be violent relaxation during the first orbital period, followed by phase mixing. By tracing the energy diffusion dE=dU(r) iteratively, the model reproduces the simulated DM profiles with ~10% accuracy or better. A method based on adiabatic invariants shows similar precision for moderate mass change but underestimates the DM expansion for strong gas ejection. A method based on a simple empirical relation between DM and total mass ratios makes slightly inferior predictions. The crude assumption used in CuspCore I, of energy conservation for shells that encompass a fixed DM mass, turns out to underestimate the DM response, which can be partially remedied by introducing an alternative "energy" definition. In a recent work, a large sample of double-peak (DP) emission line galaxies have been identified from the SDSS. While the two peaks could represent two kinematic components, they may be linked to the large bulges which their host galaxies tend to have. Star-forming DP galaxies display a central star formation enhancement and have been discussed to be compatible with a sequence of recent minor mergers. In order to probe merger induced star formation mechanisms, we conducted observations of the molecular gas content of 35 star-forming DP galaxies in the upper part of the main sequence (MS) of star formation with the IRAM 30m telescope. Including similar galaxies 0.3 dex above MS and with existing molecular gas observations from the literature, we finally obtain a sample of 52 such galaxies. We succeed in fitting the same kinematic parameters to the optical ionised and molecular gas emission lines for 10 (19%) galaxies. We find a central star formation enhancement resulting most likely from a galaxy merger or galaxy interaction, which is indicated by an excess of gas extinction found in the centre. This star formation is traced by radio continuum emissions at 150MHz, 1.4 and 3GHz, which are all three linearly correlated in log with the CO luminosity with the same slope. The 52 DP galaxies are found to have a significantly larger amount of molecular gas and larger depletion times, hence a lower star formation efficiency, than the expected values at their distance of the MS. This is consistent with a scenario of minor mergers increasing the mass of bulges and driving gas to the centre. We also exclude the inwards directed gas migration and central star formation enhancement to be the origin of a bar morphology. Hence, these 52 DP galaxies could be the results of recent minor mergers that funnelled molecular gas towards their centre, triggering star formation, but with a moderate efficiency., Comment: 33 pages, 19 figures, accepted by A&A

Observed rotation curves in star-forming galaxies indicate a puzzling dearth of dark matter in extended flat cores within haloes of mass $\geq\! 10^{12}M_\odot$ at $z\!\sim\! 2$. This is not reproduced by current cosmological simulations, and supernova-driven outflows are not effective in such massive haloes. We address a hybrid scenario where post-compaction merging satellites heat up the dark-matter cusps by dynamical friction, allowing AGN-driven outflows to generate cores. Using analytic and semi-analytic models (SatGen), we estimate the dynamical-friction heating as a function of satellite compactness for a cosmological sequence of mergers. Cosmological simulations (VELA) demonstrate that satellites of initial virial masses $>\!10^{11.3}M_\odot$, that undergo wet compactions, become sufficiently compact for significant heating. Constituting a major fraction of the accretion onto haloes $\geq\!10^{12}M_\odot$, these satellites heat-up the cusps in half a virial time at $z\!\sim\! 2$. Using a model for outflow-driven core formation (CuspCore), we demonstrate that the heated dark-matter cusps develop extended cores in response to removal of half the gas mass, while the more compact stellar systems remain intact. The mergers keep the dark matter hot, while the gas supply, fresh and recycled, is sufficient for the AGN outflows. AGN indeed become effective in haloes $\geq\!10^{12}M_\odot$, where the black-hole growth is no longer suppressed by supernovae and its compaction-driven rapid growth is maintained by a hot CGM. For simulations to reproduce the dynamical-friction effects, they should resolve the compaction of the massive satellites and avoid artificial tidal disruption. We present a pilot program using IRAM's NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) to probe the molecular gas reservoirs of six $z=0.6-1.1$ star-forming galaxies whose circumgalactic medium has been observed in absorption along quasar lines-of-sight as part of the MusE GAs FLOw and Wind (MEGAFLOW) survey and for which we have estimates of either the accretion or the outflow rate. This program is motivated by testing the quasi equilibrium model and the compaction scenario describing the evolution of galaxies along the main sequence of star formation, which imply tight relations between the gas content, the star formation activity, and the amount of gas flowing in and out. We report individual carbon monoxide CO(4-3), CO(3-2) and dust continuum upper limits, as well as stacked CO detections over the whole sample and the three galaxies identified with outflows. The resulting molecular gas fractions and depletion times are compatible with published scaling relations established within a mass-selected sample, indicating that galaxies selected through their absorption follow similar relations on average. We further detect the dust continuum of three of the quasars and a strong emission line in one of them, which we identify as CO(4-3). The delay time distribution (DTD) of Type-Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) is important for understanding chemical evolution, SN Ia progenitors, and SN Ia physics. Past estimates of the DTD in galaxy clusters have been deduced from SN Ia rates measured in cluster samples observed at various redshifts, corresponding to different time intervals after a presumed initial brief burst of star formation. A recent analysis of a cluster sample at $z=1.13-1.75$ confirmed indications from previous studies of lower-redshift clusters, that the DTD has a power-law form, ${\rm DTD}(t)=R_1 (t/{\rm Gyr})^\alpha$, with amplitude $R_1$, at delay $t=1~\rm Gyr$, several times higher than measured in field-galaxy environments. This implied that SNe Ia are somehow produced in larger numbers by the stellar populations in clusters. This conclusion, however, could have been affected by the implicit assumption that the stars were formed in a single brief starburst at high $z$. Here, we re-derive the DTD from the cluster SN Ia data, but relax the single-burst assumption. Instead, we allow for a range of star-formation histories and dust extinctions for each cluster. Via MCMC modeling, we simultaneously fit, using stellar population synthesis models and DTD models, the integrated galaxy-light photometry in several bands, and the SN Ia numbers discovered in each cluster. With these more-realistic assumptions, we find a best-fit DTD with power-law index $\alpha=-1.09_{-0.12}^{+0.15}$, and amplitude $R_1=0.41_{-0.10}^{+0.12}\times 10^{-12}~{\rm yr}^{-1}{\rm M}_\odot^{-1}$. We confirm a cluster-environment DTD with a larger amplitude than the field-galaxy DTD, by a factor $\sim2-3$ (at $3.8\sigma$). We provide prescriptions to evaluate the dynamical mass ($M_{\rm dyn}$) of galaxies from kinematic measurements of stars or gas using analytic considerations and the VELA suite of cosmological zoom-in simulations at $z=1-5$. We find that Jeans or hydrostatic equilibrium is approximately valid for galaxies of stellar masses above $M_\star \!\sim\! 10^{9.5}M_\odot$ out to $5$ effective radii ($R_e$). When both measurements of the rotation velocity $v_\phi$ and of the radial velocity dispersion $\sigma_r$ are available, the dynamical mass $M_{\rm dyn} \!\simeq\! G^{-1} V_c^2 r$ can be evaluated from the Jeans equation $V_c^2= v_\phi^2 + \alpha \sigma_r^2$ assuming cylindrical symmetry and a constant, isotropic $\sigma_r$. For spheroids, $\alpha$ is inversely proportional to the S\'ersic index $n$ and $\alpha \simeq 2.5$ within $R_e$ for the simulated galaxies. The prediction for a self-gravitating exponential disc, $\alpha = 3.36(r/R_e)$, is invalid in the simulations, where the dominant spheroid causes a weaker gradient from $\alpha \!\simeq\! 1$ at $R_e$ to 4 at $5R_e$. The correction in $\alpha$ for the stars due to the gradient in $\sigma_r(r)$ is roughly balanced by the effect of the aspherical potential, while the effect of anisotropy is negligible. When only the effective projected velocity dispersion $\sigma_l$ is available, the dynamical mass can be evaluated as $M_{\rm dyn} = K G^{-1} R_e \sigma_l^2$, where the virial factor $K$ is derived from $\alpha$ given the inclination and $v_\phi/\sigma_r$. We find that the standard value $K=5$ is approximately valid only when averaged over inclinations and for compact and thick discs, as it ranges from 4.5 to above 10 between edge-on and face-on projections., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, published in MNRAS

We present a semi-analytic model of satellite galaxies, SatGen, which can generate large samples of satellite populations for a host halo of desired mass, redshift, and assembly history. The model combines dark-matter halo merger trees, empirical relations for the galaxy-halo connection, and analytic prescriptions for tidal effects, dynamical friction, and ram pressure stripping. SatGen emulates cosmological zoom-in hydro-simulations in certain aspects. Satellites can reside in cored or cuspy DM subhaloes, depending on the halo response to baryonic physics that can be formulated from hydro-simulations and physical modeling. The subhalo profile and the stellar mass and size of a satellite evolves depending on its tidal mass loss and initial structure. The host galaxy can include a baryonic disc and a stellar bulge, each described by a density profile that allows analytic orbit integration. SatGen complements simulations by propagating the effect of halo response found in simulated field galaxies to satellites (not properly resolved in simulations) and outperforms simulations by sampling the halo-to-halo variance of satellite statistics and overcoming artificial disruption due to insufficient resolution. As a first application, we use the model to study satellites of Milky Way sized hosts, making it emulate simulations of bursty star formation and of smooth star formation, respectively, and to experiment with a disc potential in the host halo. Our model reproduces the observed satellite statistics reasonably well. Different physical recipes make a difference in satellite abundance and spatial distribution at the 25% level, not large enough to be distinguished by current observations given the halo-to-halo variance. The MW disc depletes satellites by 20% and has a subtle effect of diversifying the internal structure of satellites, important for alleviating certain small-scale problems., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We explore a function with two shape parameters for the dark-matter halo density profile subject to baryonic effects, which is a special case of the general Zhao family of models applied to simulated dark matter haloes by Dekel et al. This profile has variable inner slope and concentration parameter, and analytic expressions for the gravitational potential, velocity dispersion, and lensing properties. Using the NIHAO cosmological simulations, we find that it provides better fits than the Einasto profile and the generalized NFW profile with variable inner slope, in particular towards the halo centers. We show that the profile parameters are correlated with the stellar-to-halo mass ratio $M_{\rm star}/M_{\rm vir}$. This defines a mass-dependent density profile describing the average dark matter profiles in all galaxies, which can be directly applied to observed rotation curves of galaxies, gravitational lenses, and semi-analytic models of galaxy formation or satellite-galaxy evolution. The effect of baryons manifests itself by a significant flattening of the inner density slope and a 20\% decrease of the concentration parameter for $M_{\rm star}/M_{\rm vir} = 10^{-3.5}$ to $10^{-2}$, corresponding to $M_{\rm star} \sim 10^{7-10} M_\odot$. The accuracy by which this profile fits simulated galaxies is similar to certain multi-parameter, mass-dependent profiles, but its fewer parameters and analytic nature make it most desirable for many purposes., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS, 22 pages (main) + 15 pages (appendices)

Using analytic modeling and simulations, we address the origin of an abundance of star-forming, clumpy, extended gas rings about massive central bodies in massive galaxies at $z \!<\! 4$. Rings form by high-angular-momentum streams and survive in galaxies of $M_{\rm star} \!>\! 10^{9.5-10} M_\odot$ where merger-driven spin flips and supernova feedback are ineffective. The rings survive after events of compaction to central nuggets. Ring longevity was unexpected based on inward mass transport driven by torques from violent disc instability. However, evaluating the torques from a tightly wound spiral structure, we find that the timescale for transport per orbital time is long and $\propto\! \delta_{\rm d}^{-3}$, with $\delta_{\rm d}$ the cold-to-total mass ratio interior to the ring. A long-lived ring forms when the ring transport is slower than its replenishment by accretion and the interior depletion by SFR, both valid for $\delta_{\rm d} \!<\! 0.3$. The central mass that lowers $\delta_{\rm d}$ is a compaction-driven bulge and/or dark matter, aided by the lower gas fraction at $z \!<\! 4$, provided that it is not too low. The ring is Toomre unstable for clump and star formation. The high-$z$ dynamic rings are not likely to arise form secular resonances or collisions. AGN feedback is not expected to affect the rings. Mock images of simulated rings through dust indicate qualitative consistency with observed rings about bulges in massive $z\!\sim\!0.5\!-\!3$ galaxies, in $H_{\alpha}$ and deep HST imaging. We predict, analytically and by simulations, that gas discs tend to survive only in haloes above a threshold mass $\sim 2 \times 10^{11} M_\odot$ (stellar mass $\sim 10^9 M_\odot$), with only a weak redshift dependence. At lower masses, the disc spins typically flip in less than an orbital time due to mergers associated with a change in the pattern of the feeding cosmic-web streams. This threshold arises from the halo merger rate when accounting for the mass dependence of the ratio of galactic baryons and halo mass. Above the threshold, wet compactions lead to massive central nuggets that allow the longevity of extended clumpy gas rings. Supernova feedback has a major role in disrupting discs below the critical mass, by driving the stellar-to-halo mass ratio that affects the merger rate, by stirring up turbulence and suppressing high-angular-momentum gas supply, and by confining major compactions to the critical mass. Our predictions seem consistent with current observed fractions of gas discs, to be explored by future observations that will resolve galaxies below $10^9 M_\odot$ at high redshifts, e.g. by JWST., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures

Fuzzy dark matter of ultra-light axions has gained attention, largely in light of the galactic scale problems associated with cold dark matter. But the large de Broglie wavelength, believed to possibly alleviate these problems, also leads to fluctuations that place constraints on ultra-light axions. We adapt and extend a method, previously devised to describe the effect of gaseous fluctuations on cold dark matter cusps, in order to determine the imprints of ultra-light axion haloes on the motion of classical test particles. We first evaluate the effect of fluctuations in a statistically homogeneous medium of classical particles, then in a similar system of ultra light axions. In the first case, one recovers the classical two body relaxation time (and diffusion coefficients) from white noise density fluctuations. In the second situation, the fluctuations are not born of discreteness noise but from the finite de Broglie wavelength; correlation therefore exists over this scale, while white noise is retained on larger scales, elucidating the correspondence with classical relaxation. The resulting density power spectra and correlation functions are compared with those inferred from numerical simulations, and the relaxation time arising from the associated potential fluctuations is evaluated. We then apply our results to estimate the heating of disks embedded in axion dark haloes. We find that this implies an axion mass $m \ga 2 \times 10^{-22} {\rm eV}$. We present a simple model for the response of a dissipationless spherical system to an instantaneous mass change at its center, describing the formation of flat cores in dark matter haloes and ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) from feedback-driven outflow episodes in a specific mass range. This model generalizes an earlier simplified analysis of an isolated shell into a system with continuous density, velocity and potential profiles. The response is divided into an instantaneous change of potential at constant velocities due to a given mass loss or gain, followed by energy-conserving relaxation to a new Jeans equilibrium. The halo profile is modeled by a two-parameter function with a variable inner slope and an analytic potential profile (Dekel et al. 2017), which enables determining the associated kinetic energy at equilibrium. The model is tested against NIHAO cosmological zoom-in simulations, where it successfully predicts the evolution of the inner dark-matter profile between successive snapshots in about 75% of the cases, failing mainly in merger situations. This model provides a simple understanding of the formation of dark-matter halo cores and UDGs by supernova-driven outflows, and a useful analytic tool for studying such processes., Comment: 27 pages, 22 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We present an ALMA survey of dust continuum emission in a sample of 70 galaxies in the redshift range z=2-5 selected from the CANDELS GOODS-S field. Multi-Epoch Abundance Matching (MEAM) is used to define potential progenitors of a z = 0 galaxy of stellar mass 1.5 10^11 M_sun. Gas masses are derived from the 850um luminosity. Ancillary data from the CANDELS GOODS-S survey are used to derive the gas mass fractions. The results at z<=3 are mostly in accord with expectations: The detection rates are 75% for the z=2 redshift bin, 50% for the z=3 bin and 0% for z>=4. The average gas mass fraction for the detected z=2 galaxies is f_gas = 0.55+/-0.12 and f_gas = 0.62+/-0.15 for the z=3 sample. This agrees with expectations for galaxies on the star-forming main sequence, and shows that gas fractions have decreased at a roughly constant rate from z=3 to z=0. Stacked images of the galaxies not detected with ALMA give upper limits to f_gas of <0.08 and <0.15, for the z=2 and z=3 redshift bins. None of our galaxies in the z=4 and z=5 sample are detected and the upper limit from stacked images, corrected for low metallicity, is f_gas<0.66. We do not think that lower gas-phase metallicities can entirely explain the lower dust luminosities. We study ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in zoom in cosmological simulations, seeking the origin of UDGs in the field versus galaxy groups. We find that while field UDGs arise from dwarfs in a characteristic mass range by multiple episodes of supernova feedback (Di Cintio et al. 2017), group UDGs may also form by tidal puffing up and they become quiescent by ram-pressure stripping. The field and group UDGs share similar properties, independent of distance from the group centre. Their dark-matter haloes have ordinary spin parameters and centrally dominant dark-matter cores. Their stellar components tend to have a prolate shape with a Sersic index n~1 but no significant rotation. Ram pressure removes the gas from the group UDGs when they are at pericentre, quenching star formation in them and making them redder. This generates a colour/star-formation-rate gradient with distance from the centre, as observed in clusters. We find that ~20 per cent of the field UDGs that fall into a massive halo survive as satellite UDGs. In addition, normal field dwarfs on highly eccentric orbits can become UDGs near pericentre due to tidal puffing up, contributing about half of the group-UDG population. We interpret our findings using simple toy models, showing that gas stripping is mostly due to ram pressure rather than tides. We estimate that the energy deposited by tides in the bound component of a satellite over one orbit can cause significant puffing up provided that the orbit is sufficiently eccentric., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We present an analysis of the relationship between the CO-H$_{2}$ conversion factor ($\alpha_{\rm CO}$) and total mass surface density ($\Sigma_{\rm tot}$) in star-forming galaxies at $z < 1.5$. Our sample, which is drawn from the IRAM Plateau de Bure HIgh-$z$ Blue Sequence Survey (PHIBSS) and the CO Legacy Database for GASS (COLD GASS), includes 'normal,' massive star-forming galaxies that dominate the evolution of the cosmic star formation rate (SFR) at this epoch and probe the $\Sigma_{\rm tot}$ regime where the strongest variation in $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ is observed. We constrain $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ via existing CO observations, measurements of the star formation rate, and an assumed molecular gas depletion time ($t_{\rm dep}$=$M_{\rm gas}$/SFR) --- the latter two of which establish the total molecular gas mass independent of the observed CO luminosity. For a broad range of adopted depletion times, we find that $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ is independent of total mass surface density, with little deviation from the canonical Milky Way value. This runs contrary to a scenario in which $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ decreases as surface density increases within the extended clouds of molecular gas that potentially fuel clumps of star formation in $z\sim1$ galaxies, similar to those observed in local ULIRGs. Instead, our results suggest that molecular gas, both at $z\sim0$ and $z\sim1$, is primarily in the form of self-gravitating molecular clouds. While CO observations suggest a factor of $\sim3$ reduction in the average molecular gas depletion time between $z \sim 0$ and $z\sim1$, we find that, for typical galaxies, the structure of molecular gas and the process of star formation at $z \sim 1$ is otherwise remarkably similar to that observed in local star-forming systems., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS. 16 pages, 8 figures

The cold dark matter model of structure formation faces apparent problems on galactic scales. Several threads point to excessive halo concentration, including central densities that rise too steeply with decreasing radius. Yet, random fluctuations in the gaseous component can 'heat' the centres of haloes, decreasing their densities. We present a theoretical model deriving this effect from first principles: stochastic variations in the gas density are converted into potential fluctuations that act on the dark matter; the associated force correlation function is calculated and the corresponding stochastic equation solved. Assuming a power law spectrum of fluctuations with maximal and minimal cutoff scales, we derive the velocity dispersion imparted to the halo particles and the relevant relaxation time. We further perform numerical simulations, with fluctuations realised as a Gaussian random field, which confirm the formation of a core within a timescale comparable to that derived analytically. Non-radial collective modes enhance the energy transport process that erases the cusp, though the parametrisations of the analytical model persist. In our model, the dominant contribution to the dynamical coupling driving the cusp-core transformation comes from the largest scale fluctuations. Yet, the efficiency of the transformation is independent of the value of the largest scale and depends weakly (linearly) on the power law exponent; it effectively depends on two parameters: the gas mass fraction and the normalisation of the power spectrum. Filamentary structures are ubiquitous in astrophysics and are observed at various scales. On a cosmological scale, matter is usually distributed along filaments, and filaments are also typical features of the interstellar medium. Within a cosmic filament, matter can contract and form galaxies, whereas an interstellar gas filament can clump into a series of bead-like structures which can then turn into stars. To investigate the growth of such instabilities, we derive a local dispersion relation for an idealized self-gravitating filament, and study some of its properties. Our idealized picture consists of an infinite self-gravitating and rotating cylinder with pressure and density related by a polytropic equation of state. We assume no specific density distribution, treat matter as a fluid, and use hydrodynamics to derive the linearized equations that govern the local perturbations. We obtain a dispersion relation for axisymmetric perturbations and study its properties in the (k_R, k_z) phase space, where k_R and k_z are respectively the radial and longitudinal wavenumbers. While the boundary between the stable and unstable regimes is symmetrical in k_R and k_z and analogous to the Jeans criterion, the most unstable mode displays an asymmetry that could constrain the shape of the structures that form within the filament.
