Zunächst werden die Elemente von Macht und Konflikt in der Geschichte aufgedeckt und die Bilder des Schauens und des Schauspiels in ihrem Verhältnis zum deutenden, sinn- und wahrheitssuchendcn Menschen aufgezeigt. Aus dieser Analyse ergibt sich, daß Kleist die Wahrheit als relatives, ein durch die Machtverhältnisse bedingtes Phänomen auffaßte. After establishing the contexts in which power conflicts occur in the story, the essay examines the imagery of sight and spectacle and its relationship to the interpretive efforts of characters to find meaning and to determine truth. It is shown that Kleist views truth as a relative phenomenon fully determined by power relationships.
