Abstract

This study delves into the enhancement of two-photon absorption (2PA) properties in diazaacene-bithiophene derivatives through a synergistic approach combining theoretical analysis and experimental validation. By investigating the structural modifications and their impact on 2PA cross sections, we identify key factors that significantly influence the 2PA efficiency. For all molecular systems studied, our state-of-the-art quantum chemical calculations show a very high involvement of the first excited singlet state (S1) in the 2PA processes into higher excited states, even if this state itself has only a small 2PA cross section for symmetry reasons. Consequently, both the oscillator strength of S1 and the transition dipole moments between S1 and other excited states are of importance, underscoring the role of electronic polarizability in facilitating effective two-photon interactions. The investigated compounds exhibit large 2PA cross sections over a wide near-infrared spectral range reaching giant values of 42000 GM. The introduction of diazine and diazaacene moieties into bithiophene derivatives not only induces charge transfer but also opens up pathways for the creation of materials with tailored nonlinear optical responses, suggesting potential applications in nonlinear optics., Comment: 26 pages; 12 figures

Abstract

The electronic interaction between an optically active singlet state ($S_1S_0$) and a dark state of singlet multiplicity, known as correlated triplet pair ($^1[TT]$), plays a crucial role in the effective transformation from $S_1S_0$ to $^1[TT]$ during intramolecular singlet fission (iSF). This process is understood through mechanisms such as direct exchange coupling and incoherent processes that involve super-exchange coupling through charge-transfer states. However, most insights into these mechanisms are derived from theoretical studies due to the difficulties in obtaining experimental evidence. In this study, we investigate the excited-state interactions between $S_1S_0$ and $^1[TT]$ in spiro-conjugated iSF sensitizers by employing transient two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy. This approach allows us to focus on the early stages of the conversion from $S_1S_0$ to $^1[TT]$. Upon optical excitation, a superposition of $S_1S_0$ and $^1[TT]$ is created, which gradually transitions to favor $^1[TT]$ within the characteristic time frames of iSF. The observed high-order signals indicate circular repopulation dynamic that effectively reinitiates the iSF process from higher energy electronic states. Our findings, supported by semi-quantum-mechanical simulations of the experimental data, suggest the presence of a direct iSF mechanism in the dimers, facilitated by weak non-adiabatic coupling between $S_1S_0$ and $^1[TT]$. Abstract

Non‐Kekulé quinoidal azaacences m‐A (1 a,b) were synthesized and compared to their para‐ and ortho‐quinodimethane analogues. m‐A display high diradical characters (1 b: y0 = 0.88) due to their meta‐quinodimethane (m‐QDM) topology. Electron paramagnetic, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies and supraquantum interference device measurements in combination with quantum‐chemical calculations revealed singlet ground states for m‐A with singlet‐triplet gaps ΔEST (0.13–0.25 kcal mol−1) and thermally populated triplet states. These non‐Kekulé structures are over all void of zwitterionic character and possess record high two‐photon absorption cross sections over a broad spectral range in the near‐infrared. Abstract

Poly(3‐hexyl‐thiophene‐2,5‐diyl) (P3HT) is one of the most commonly used materials in organic electronics, yet it is considered to be rather unattractive for organic field‐effect transistors (OFETs) due to its tendency to oxidize under aerobic conditions. Strong p‐doping of P3HT by oxygen causes high off‐currents in such devices opposing the desired high on/off‐ratios. Herein, a new application‐oriented method involving the recently developed immobilizable organic n‐dopant 2‐(2‐((4‐azidobenzyl)oxy)phenyl)‐1,3‐dimethyl‐2,3‐dihydro‐1H‐benzoimidazol (o‐AzBnO‐DMBI) is presented allowing to process and operate P3HT OFETs in air. The n‐dopants compensate oxygen doping by trapping generated free holes, thereby rediminishing OFET off‐currents by approximately two orders of magnitude. At the same time, field‐effect mobilities remain high in the order of up to 0.19 cm² V⁻¹ s⁻¹. Due to the covalent attachment of the dopants to the host matrix after photochemical activation, a drift of the otherwise mobile ions within the device is prevented even at high operating voltages and, thus, hysteresis in the corresponding transfer characteristics is kept low. In this manner, the air instability of P3HT OFETs is successfully resolved paving an auspicious way toward OFET mass production. As the immobilization process employed here is nonspecific with respect to the host material, this strategy is transferable to other p‐type semiconductors.

Abstract

To date only a fraction of the genetic footprint of thyroid function has been clarified. We report a genome-wide association study meta-analysis of thyroid function in up to 271,040 individuals of European ancestry, including reference range thyrotropin (TSH), free thyroxine (FT4), free and total triiodothyronine (T3), proxies for metabolism (T3/FT4 ratio) as well as dichotomized high and low TSH levels. We revealed 259 independent significant associations for TSH (61% novel), 85 for FT4 (67% novel), and 62 novel signals for the T3 related traits. The loci explained 14.1%, 6.0%, 9.5% and 1.1% of the total variation in TSH, FT4, total T3 and free T3 concentrations, respectively. Genetic correlations indicate that TSH associated loci reflect the thyroid function determined by free T3, whereas the FT4 associations represent the thyroid hormone metabolism. Polygenic risk score and Mendelian randomization analyses showed the effects of genetically determined variation in thyroid function on various clinical outcomes, including cardiovascular risk factors and diseases, autoimmune diseases, and cancer. In conclusion, our results improve the understanding of thyroid hormone physiology and highlight the pleiotropic effects of thyroid function on various diseases.

13. Interplay of Ion-Conduction and Nanoscale Self-Assembly in Amphiphilic Janus-Type Hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronenes.

Abstract

Ionic discotic liquid crystals combine ion conduction with fluid, yet ordered, liquid crystal phases at ambient temperature, making them suitable nanomaterials for ion transport and energy storage. A series of Janus-type hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronenes (HBCs) with ionic (sulfonate) groups covalently bonded to the HBC core, and tetraalkylammonium counterions (sizes from 0.15 to 0.95 nm) are synthesized and investigated with respect to the self-assembly and ion dynamics. We find that the counterion size affects the nanoscale self-assembly and ionic conductivity in opposite ways. Smaller counterions act as structure formers, whereas larger ones act as structure breakers. The latter exhibits the highest ion dc-conductivity. We quantify the effect of Coulomb interactions on the self-assembly, the glass temperature Tg (which was found to vary by 30 K), and the dc-conductivity (varying by 4 orders of magnitude). The precise synthesis of tailor-made ionic discotic liquid crystals with the HBC core and the characterization of their physical properties revealed that ion-conduction and nanoscale self-assembly in HBCs can be modulated by tuning electrostatic interactions, e.g., by adjusting the size of counterions. Abstract

The amount of non-unique sequence (non-singletons) in a genome directly affects the difficulty of read alignment to a reference assembly for high throughput-sequencing data. Although a greater length increases the chance for reads being uniquely mapped to the reference genome, a quantitative analysis of the influence of read lengths on mappability has been lacking. To address this question, we evaluate the k-mer distribution of the human reference genome. The k-mer frequency is determined for k ranging from 20 to 1000 basepairs. We use the proportion of non-singleton k-mers to evaluate the mappability of reads for a corresponding read length. We observe that the proportion of non-singletons decreases slowly with increasing k, and can be fitted by piecewise power-law functions with different exponents at different k ranges. A faster decay at smaller values for k indicates more limited gains for read lengths > 200 basepairs. The frequency distributions of k-mers exhibit long tails in a power-law-like trend, and rank frequency plots exhibit a concave Zipf's curve. The location of the most frequent 1000-mers comprises 172 kilobase-ranged regions, including four large stretches on chromosomes 1 and X, containing genes with biomedical implications. Abstract

Labor intensive experiments are typically required to identify the causal disease variants from a list of disease associated variants in the genome. For designing such experiments, candidate variants are ranked by their strength of genetic association with the disease. However, the two commonly used measures of genetic association, the odds-ratio (OR) and p-value, may rank variants in different order. To integrate these two measures into a single analysis, here we transfer the volcano plot methodology from gene expression analysis to genetic association studies. In its original setting, volcano plots are scatter plots of fold-change and t-test statistic (or -log of the p-value), with the latter being more sensitive to sample size. In genetic association studies, the OR and Pearson's chi-square statistic (or equivalently its square root, chi; or the standardized log(OR)) can be analogously used in a volcano plot, allowing for their visual inspection. Moreover, the geometric interpretation of these plots leads to an intuitive method for filtering results by a combination of both OR and chi-square statistic, which we term "regularized-chi". This method selects associated markers by a smooth curve in the volcano plot instead of the right-angled lines which corresponds to independent cutoffs for OR and chi-square statistic. The regularized-chi incorporates relatively more signals from variants with lower minor-allele-frequencies than chi-square test statistic. As rare variants tend to have stronger functional effects, regularized-chi is better suited to the task of prioritization of candidate genes., Comment: 5 figures

24. Two-Parameter Characterization of Chromosome-Scale Recombination Rate

Abstract

The genome-wide recombination rate ($RR$) of a species is often described by one parameter, the ratio between total genetic map length ($G$) and physical map length ($P$), measured in centiMorgans per Megabase (cM/Mb). The value of this parameter varies greatly between species, but the cause for these differences is not entirely clear. A constraining factor of overall $RR$ in a species, which may cause increased $RR$ for smaller chromosomes, is the requirement of at least one chiasma per chromosome (or chromosome-arm) per meiosis. In the present study, we quantify the relative excess of recombination events on smaller chromosomes by a linear regression model, which relates the genetic length of chromosomes to their physical length. We find for several species that the two-parameter regression, $G= G_0 + k \cdot P$ provides a better characterization of the relationship between genetic and physical map length than the one-parameter regression that runs through the origin. A non-zero intercept ($G_0$) indicates a relative excess of recombination on smaller chromosomes in a genome. Given $G_0$, the parameter $k$ predicts the increase of genetic map length over the increase of physical map length. The observed values of $G_0$ have a similar magnitude for diverse species, whereas $k$ varies by two orders of magnitude. The implications of this strategy for the genetic maps of human, mouse, rat, chicken, honeybee, worm and yeast are discussed.

Abstract

The photooxidative stability of a series of doubly bridged anthracenes was evaluated after their preparation via twofold macrocyclization of a bis(resorcinyl)anthracene. Lightfastness correlates with the energy levels of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), resulting in superior stability of the tetraesters compared to the tetraethers. The lengths and steric demand of the linker only plays a minor role for the ester‐based compounds, which can be prepared in reasonable yields and thus tested in proof‐of‐concept organic light‐emitting diodes. Double ester‐bridging allows deep blue electro‐luminescence, highlighting the importance of the choice of the functional groups used for macrocyclization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The photooxidative stability of a series of doubly bridged anthracenes was evaluated after their preparation via twofold macrocyclization of a bis(resorcinyl)anthracene. Lightfastness correlates with the energy levels of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), resulting in superior stability of the tetraesters compared to the tetraethers. The lengths and steric demand of the linker only plays a minor role for the ester-based compounds, which can be prepared in reasonable yields and thus tested in proof-of-concept organic light-emitting diodes. Abstract

Four substituted nonacenes were prepared and characterized by UV‐vis and EPR spectroscopy and X‐ray crystallography. The compounds are the most stable and soluble nonacenes to date – due to six strategically placed triisopropylsilyl(TIPS)‐ethynyl groups. They are stable for several weeks in the solid state. In dilute solution their half‐life is 5–9 h. Crystal structure analyses of two nonacenes prove their structures. A nonacene derivative was tested in a solution‐processed transistor and exhibits ambipolar charge transport (μe=0.007 cm2/Vs; μh=0.023 cm2/Vs). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
