The phenomenon of fluorescence is ubiquitous and as such has attracted Scientists' attention for centuries. The challenge is to describe fluorescence as observed in different materials under different conditions by mathematical models having some features in common. Section ``Fluorescence conversion models: Transform kernels or scaling constants ?'' addresses bulk properties of the fluorescent medium and is mainly \underline{literature-driven}: some Articles are quoted in order of appearance, the focus being on whether the fluorescent quantum efficiency turns out to depend or not on the wavelength of excitation. Section ``Approximate propagators in scalar optics'' is mainly \underline{model-driven} and summarises mathematical methods and models in wave propagation which are limited to scalar waves and are ordered by complexity. The relation of said models to radiative transfer theory need not be immediate and as such is a matter of ongoing investigation.

Near-field source localization is an important aspect in many diverse areas such as acoustics, seismology, to list a few. The planar wave assumption frequently used in far-field source localization is no longer valid when the sources are in the near field. Near-field sources can be localized by solving a joint direction-of-arrival and range estimation problem. The original near-field source localization problem is a multi-dimensional non-linear optimization problem which is computationally intractable. In this thesis we study address two important questions related to near-field source localization: (i) Sparse reconstruction techniques for joint DOA and range estimation using a grid-based model. (ii) Matching the sampling grid for off-grid sources. In the first part of this thesis, we use a grid-based model and by further leveraging the sparsity, we can solve the aforementioned problem efficiently using any of the off-the-shelf l1_-norm optimization solvers. When multiple snapshots are available, we can also exploit the cross-correlations among the symmetric sensors of the array and further reduce the complexity by solving two sparse reconstruction problems of lower dimensions instead of a single sparse reconstruction problem of a higher dimension. In the second part of this thesis, we account scenarios where the true source locations are not on the grid resulting in a grid mismatch. Using the first-order Taylor approximation, we model the grid mismatch as a perturbation around the sampling grid. This report describes the development and use of the Fresnel approximation, which is necessary to transform a digital hologram to an image. The result is that a Fourier transform, common to many image processing applications, may be used to produce the image. The U.S. Army Research Laboratory's (ARL) goal is to investigate applications of holographic interferometry and transform the holographic interference pattern to three-dimensional images. The mathematics described in this report are a critical step in this process. Stokes's theorem is used as a starting point, where the spherical wave complex amplitude is used in the evaluation. The final result of this first step is the Helmholtz-Kirchhoff equation. Assumptions are made, recognizing that only the illuminated information in the aperture is important to the problem. These assumptions change the Helmholtz-Kirchhoff equation to the Kirchhoff diffraction integral. Finally, the Fresnel and Fraunhofer approximations, which deal with aperture coordinates, and aperture size and distance, respectively, are used to obtain a practical solution. The result of these calculations is that the Fourier transform may be used to form an image, instead of more cumbersome integral equations. This fact makes the transformation from a hologram interference pattern to an image much easier to calculate.

The numerical calculation of the Rayleigh-Sommerfeld diffraction integral is investigated. The implementation of a fast-Fourier-transform (FFT) based direct integration (FFT-DI) method is presented, and Simpson's rule is used to improve the calculation accuracy. The sampling interval, the size of the computation window, and their influence on numerical accuracy and on computational complexity are discussed for the FFT-DI and the FFT-based angular spectrum (FFT-AS) methods. The performance of the FFT-DI method is verified by numerical simulation and compared with that of the FFT-AS method. (c) 2006 Optical Society of America.

Wenn man eine direkte Beugungsaufgabe loesen muss, d.h. das skalare Feld im Halbraum als Funktion der Randbedingung (Amplitudenverteilung in der Apertur) schreiben will, kann man die Loesung der Helmholtz'schen Gl. in verschiedenen Weisen annaehern. Es gibt grundsaetzlich zwei Annaeherungsmethoden, im Orts- und bzw. im Ortsfrequenz-Gebiet. Bei der ersten, arbeitet man an der Green'schen Funktion, um ``kleinere'' Beitraege zu vernachlaessigen. Wohlbekannt sind die davon abgeleitete Fresnel- und Fraunhofer'sche Beugungsformeln; die letzte fuehrt zur Fourier-Optik. Bei der zweiten Methode, arbeitet man im Fourier-Gebiet: das Hauptergebnis ist die Paraxialgleichung, bei der hoehere Ortsfrequenzen ausgeschlossen werden. Wie es hier bewiesen wird, sind die Fresnel'sche und die paraxiale Annaeherungen gleichwertig. Besonders wichtig dieses Ergebnis wird, wenn man Beugungsdaten umkehren will, um die Randbedingungen abzuschaetzen. Waehlt man dafuer z. B. das Modell der Fourier'schen Optik, dann wird jede Ueberaufloesungsmethode kein physikalisch bedeutendes Ergebnis mitbringen.
