Search

The nature of dark matter and properties of neutrinos are among the most pressing issues in contemporary particle physics. The dual-phase xenon time-projection chamber is the leading technology to cover the available parameter space for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), while featuring extensive sensitivity to many alternative dark matter candidates. These detectors can also study neutrinos through neutrinoless double-beta decay and through a variety of astrophysical sources. A next-generation xenon-based detector will therefore be a true multi-purpose observatory to significantly advance particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, solar physics, and cosmology. We present a power spectrum analysis of the final 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey, employing a direct Fourier method. The sample used comprises 221,414 galaxies with measured redshifts. We investigate in detail the modelling of the sample selection. A new angular mask is derived, based on revisions to the photometric calibration. The redshift selection function is determined by dividing the survey according to rest-frame colour, and deducing a self-consistent treatment of k-corrections and evolution for each population. The covariance matrix for the power-spectrum estimates is determined using two different approaches to the construction of mock surveys which are used to demonstrate that the input cosmological model can be correctly recovered. We are confident that the 2dFGRS power spectrum can be used to infer the matter content of the universe. On large scales, our estimated power spectrum shows evidence for the `baryon oscillations' that are predicted in CDM models. Fitting to a CDM model, assuming a primordial $n_{s}=1$ spectrum, $h=0.72$ and negligible neutrino mass, the preferred parameters are $\Omega_{M} h = 0.168 \pm 0.016$ and a baryon fraction $\Omega_{b} /\Omega_{M} = 0.185\pm0.046$ (1$\sigma$ errors). The value of $\Omega_{M} h$ is $1\sigma$ lower than the $0.20 \pm 0.03$ in our 2001 analysis of the partially complete 2dFGRS. This shift is largely due to the signal from the newly-sampled regions of space, rather than the refinements in the treatment of observational selection. This analysis therefore implies a density significantly below the standard $\Omega_{M} =0.3$: in combination with CMB data from WMAP, we infer $\Omega_{M} =0.231\pm 0.021$. The clustering properties of local, S_{1.4 GHz} > 1 mJy, radio sources are investigated for a sample of 820 objects drawn from the joint use of the FIRST and 2dF Galaxy Redshift surveys. To this aim, we present 271 new bj < 19.45 spectroscopic counterparts of FIRST radio sources to be added to those already introduced in Magliocchetti et al. (2002). The two-point correlation function for the local radio population is found to be entirely consistent with estimates obtained for the whole sample of 2dFGRS galaxies. We estimate the parameters of the real-space correlation function xi(r)=(r/r_0)^{-\gamma}, r_0=6.7^{+0.9}_{-1.1} Mpc and \gamma=1.6\pm 0.1, where h=0.7 is assumed. Different results are instead obtained if we only consider sources that present signatures of AGN activity in their spectra. These objects are shown to be very strongly correlated, with r_0=10.9^{+1.0}_{-1.2} Mpc and \gamma=2\pm 0.1, a steeper slope than has been claimed in other recent works. No difference is found in the clustering properties of radio-AGNs of different radio luminosity. These results show that AGN-fuelled sources reside in dark matter halos more massive than \sim 10^{13.4} M_{\sun}},higher the corresponding figure for radio-quiet QSOs. This value can be converted into a minimum black hole mass associated with radio-loud, AGN-fuelled objects of M_{BH}^{min}\sim 10^9 M_{\sun}. The above results then suggest -at least for relatively faint radio objects -the existence of a threshold black hole mass associated with the onset of significant radio activity such as that of radio-loud AGNs; however, once the activity is triggered, there appears to be no evidence for a connection between black hole mass and level of radio output. We have calculated the two-point correlation functions in redshift space, xi(sigma,pi), for galaxies of different spectral types in the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey. Using these correlation functions we are able to estimate values of the linear redshift-space distortion parameter, beta = Omega_m^0.6/b, the pairwise velocity dispersion, a, and the real-space correlation function, xi(r), for galaxies with both relatively low star-formation rates (for which the present rate of star formation is less than 10% of its past averaged value) and galaxies with higher current star-formation activity. At small separations, the real-space clustering of passive galaxies is very much stronger than that of the more actively star-forming galaxies; the correlation-function slopes are respectively 1.93 and 1.50, and the relative bias between the two classes is a declining function of radius. On scales larger than 10 h^-1 Mpc there is evidence that the relative bias tends to a constant, b(passive)/b(active) ~ 1. This result is consistent with the similar degrees of redshift-space distortions seen in the correlation functions of the two classes -- the contours of xi(sigma,pi) require beta(active)=0.49+/-0.13, and beta(passive)=0.48+/-0.14. The pairwise velocity dispersion is highly correlated with beta. However, despite this a significant difference is seen between the two classes. Over the range 8-20 h^-1 Mpc, the pairwise velocity dispersion has mean values 416+/-76 km/s and 612+/-92 km/s for the active and passive galaxy samples respectively. This is consistent with the expectation from morphological segregation, in which passively evolving galaxies preferentially inhabit the cores of high-mass virialised regions., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures. We calculate the colours and luminosities of redshift z = 0.1 galaxies from the EAGLE simulation suite using the GALAXEV population synthesis models. We take into account obscuration by dust in birth clouds and diffuse ISM using a two-component screen model, following the prescription of Charlot and Fall. We compare models in which the dust optical depth is constant to models where it depends on gas metallicity, gas fraction and orientation. The colours of EAGLE galaxies for the more sophisticated models are in broad agreement with those of observed galaxies. In particular, EAGLE produces a red sequence of passive galaxies and a blue cloud of star forming galaxies, with approximately the correct fraction of galaxies in each population and with g-r colours within 0.1 magnitudes of those observed. Luminosity functions from UV to NIR wavelengths differ from observations at a level comparable to systematic shifts resulting from a choice between Petrosian and Kron photometric apertures. Despite the generally good agreement there are clear discrepancies with observations. The blue cloud of EAGLE galaxies extends to somewhat higher luminosities than in the data, consistent with the modest underestimate of the passive fraction in massive EAGLE galaxies. There is also a moderate excess of bright blue galaxies compared to observations. The overall level of agreement with the observed colour distribution suggests that EAGLE galaxies at z = 0.1 have ages, metallicities and levels of obscuration that are comparable to those of observed galaxies., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We constrain flat cosmological models with a joint likelihood analysis of a new compilation of data from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and from the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS). Fitting the CMB alone yields a known degeneracy between the Hubble constant h and the matter density Ωm, which arises mainly from preserving the location of the peaks in the angular power spectrum. This 'horizon-angle degeneracy' is considered in some detail and is shown to follow the simple relation Ωm h3.4 = constant. Adding the 2dF-GRS power spectrum constrains Ωm h and breaks the degeneracy. If tensor anisotropies are assumed to be negligible, we obtain values for the Hubble constant of h = 0.665±0.047, the matter density Ωm = 0.313±0.055, and the physical cold dark matter and baryon densities Ωm h2 = 0.115±0.009, Ωm h2 = 0.022±0.002 (standard rms errors). Including a possible tensor component causes very little change to these figures; we set an upper limit to the tensor-to-scalar ratio of r < 0.7 at a 95 per cent confidence level. We then show how these data can be used to constrain the equation of state of the vacuum, and find w < -0.52 at 95 per cent confidence. The preferred cosmological model is thus very well specified, and we discuss the precision with which future CMB data can be predicted, given the model assumptions. The major morphological features of a galaxy are thought to be determined by the assembly history and net spin of its surrounding dark halo. In the simplest scenario, disc galaxies form predominantly in haloes with high angular momentum and quiet recent assembly history, whereas spheroids are the slowly rotating remnants of repeated merging events. We explore these assumptions using 100 systems with halo masses similar to that of the Milky Way, identified in a series of cosmological gasdynamical simulations: the GalaxiesIntergalactic Medium Interaction Calculation (gimic). At z= 0, the simulated galaxies exhibit a wide variety of morphologies, from dispersion-dominated spheroids to pure disc galaxies. Surprisingly, these morphological features are very poorly correlated with their halo properties: discs form in haloes with high and low net spin, and mergers play a negligible role in the formation of spheroids, whose stars form primarily in situ. With hindsight, this weak correlation between halo and galaxy properties is unsurprising given that a minority of the available baryons (similar to 40 per cent) end up in galaxies. More important to morphology is the coherent alignment of the angular momentum of baryons that accrete over time to form a galaxy. Spheroids tend to form when the spin of newly accreted gas is misaligned with that of the extant galaxy, leading to the episodic formation of stars with different kinematics that cancel out the net rotation of the system. Discs, on the other hand, form out of gas that flows in with similar angular momentum to that of earlier accreted material. Gas accretion from a hot corona thus favours disc formation, whereas gas that flows cold, often along separate, misaligned filaments, favours the formation of spheroids. In this scenario, many spheroids consist of the superposition of stellar components with distinct kinematics, age and metallicity, an arrangement that might survive to the present day given the paucity of major mergers. Since angular momentum is acquired largely at turnaround, morphology depends on the early interplay between the tidal field and the shape of the material destined to form a galaxy.

(Abridged) We study the phase-space distribution of satellite galaxies associated with late-type galaxies in the GIMIC suite of simulations. GIMIC consists of re-simulations of 5 cosmologically representative regions from the Millennium simulation, which have higher resolution and incorporate baryonic physics. Whilst the disc of the galaxy is well aligned with the inner regions (r ~ 0.1r_200) of the dark matter halo, both in shape and angular momentum, there can be substantial misalignments at larger radii (r ~ r_200). Misalignments of > 45 deg are seen in ~ 30% of our sample. We find that the satellite population aligns with the shape (and angular momentum) of the outer dark matter halo. However, the alignment with the galaxy is weak owing to the mismatch between the disc and dark matter halo. Roughly 20% of the satellite systems with ten bright galaxies within r_200 exhibit a polar spatial alignment with respect to the galaxy --- an orientation reminiscent of the classical satellites of the Milky Way. We find that a small fraction (~10%) of satellite systems show evidence for rotational support which we attribute to group infall. There is a bias towards satellites on prograde orbits relative to the spin of the dark matter halo (and to a lesser extent with the angular momentum of the disc). This preference towards co-rotation is stronger in the inner regions of the halo where the most massive satellites accreted at relatively early times are located. We attribute the anisotropic spatial distribution and angular momentum bias of the satellites at z=0 to their directional accretion along the major axes of the dark matter halo. The satellite galaxies have been accreted relatively recently compared to the dark matter mass and have experienced less phase-mixing and relaxation --- the memory of their accretion history can remain intact to z=0., 19 pages, 17 Figures. We measure the projected cross-correlation between low-redshift (z < 0.5) far-infrared selected galaxies in the science demonstration phase (SDP) field of the Herschel-ATLAS (H-ATLAS) survey and optically selected galaxies from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) redshift survey. In order to obtain robust correlation functions, we restrict the analysis to a subset of 969 out of 6900 H-ATLAS galaxies, which have reliable optical counterparts with r < 19.4 mag and well-determined spectroscopic redshifts. The overlap region between the two surveys is 12.6 deg2; the matched sample has a median redshift of z≈ 0.2. The cross-correlation of GAMA and H-ATLAS galaxies within this region can be fitted by a power law, with correlation length r0≈ 4.63 ± 0.51 Mpc. Comparing with the corresponding autocorrelation function of GAMA galaxies within the SDP field yields a relative bias (averaged over 2–8 Mpc) of H-ATLAS and GAMA galaxies of bH/bG≈ 0.6. Combined with clustering measurements from previous optical studies, this indicates that most of the low-redshift H-ATLAS sources are hosted by haloes with masses comparable to that of the Milky Way. The correlation function appears to depend on the 250-μm luminosity, L250, with bright (median luminosity νL250∼ 1.6 × 1010 L⊙) objects being somewhat more strongly clustered than faint (νL250∼ 4.0 × 109 L⊙) objects. This implies that galaxies with higher dust-obscured star formation rates are hosted by more massive haloes.

The existence of X-ray luminous gaseous coronae around massive disc galaxies is a long-standing prediction of galaxy formation theory in the cold dark matter cosmogony. This prediction has garnered little observational support, with non-detections commonplace and detections for only a relatively small number of galaxies which are much less luminous than expected. We investigate the coronal properties of a large sample of bright, disc-dominated galaxies extracted from the GIMIC suite of cosmological hydrodynamic simulations recently presented by Crain et al. Remarkably, the simulations reproduce the observed scalings of X-ray luminosity with K-band luminosity and star formation rate and, when account is taken of the density structure of the halo, with disc rotation velocity as well. Most of the star formation in the simulated galaxies (which have realistic stellar mass fractions) is fuelled by gas cooling from a quasi-hydrostatic hot corona. However, these coronae are more diffuse, and of a lower luminosity, than predicted by the analytic models of White & Frenk because of a substantial increase in entropy at z ~ 1-3. Both the removal of low entropy gas by star formation and energy injection from supernovae contribute to this increase in entropy, but the latter is dominant for halo masses M_200, Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures. We present a detailed analysis of the two-point correlation function, from the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS). We estimate the redshift-space correlation function, xi(s), from which we measure the redshift-space clustering length, s_0=6.82+/-0.28 Mpc/h. We also estimate the projected correlation function, Xi(sigma), and the real-space correlation function, xi(r), which can be fit by a power-law, with r_0=5.05+/-0.26Mpc/h, gamma_r=1.67+/-0.03. For r>20Mpc/h, xi drops below a power-law as is expected in the popular LCDM model. The ratio of amplitudes of the real and redshift-space correlation functions on scales of 8-30Mpc/h gives an estimate of the redshift-space distortion parameter beta. The quadrupole moment of xi on scales 30-40Mpc/h provides another estimate of beta. We also estimate the distribution function of pairwise peculiar velocities, f(v), including rigorously the effect of infall velocities, and find that it is well fit by an exponential. The accuracy of our xi measurement is sufficient to constrain a model, which simultaneously fits the shape and amplitude of xi(r) and the two redshift-space distortion effects parameterized by beta and velocity dispersion, a. We find beta=0.49+/-0.09 and a=506+/-52km/s, though the best fit values are strongly correlated. We measure the variation of the peculiar velocity dispersion with projected separation, a(sigma), and find that the shape is consistent with models and simulations. Using the constraints on bias from recent estimates, and taking account of redshift evolution, we conclude that beta(L=L*,z=0)=0.47+/-0.08, and that the present day matter density of the Universe is 0.3, consistent with other 2dFGRS estimates and independent analyses., 19 pages, revised following referee's report, and accepted by MNRAS. Much insight into the formation of early-type galaxies (ellipticals and SOs) can be gained through study of their halo properties (mass distribution, angular momenta, orbit structure).

N-body simulations have been carried out in order to explore the final state of elliptical galaxies after encounters and more expecifically whether the Fundamental Plane (FP hereafter) relation is affected by merging.

We perform a joint likelihood analysis of the power spectra of the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) and the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies under the assumptions that the initial fluctuations were adiabatic, Gaussian and well described by power laws with scalar and tensor indices of n_s and n_t. On its own, the 2dFGRS sets tight limits on the parameter combination Omega_m h, but relatively weak limits on the fraction of the cosmic matter density in baryons Omega_b/Omega_m. The CMB anisotropy data alone set poor constraints on the cosmological constant and Hubble constant because of a `geometrical degeneracy' among parameters. Furthermore, if tensor modes are allowed, the CMB data allow a wide range of values for the physical densities in baryons and cold dark matter. Combining the CMB and 2dFGRS data sets helps to break both the geometrical and tensor mode degeneracies. The values of the parameters derived here are consistent with the predictions of the simplest models of inflation, with the baryon density derived from primordial nucleosynthesis and with direct measurements of the Hubble parameter. In particular, we find strong evidence for a positive cosmological constant with a pm 2sigma range of 0.65 < Omega_Lambda < 0.85, completely independently of constraints on Omega_��derived from Type Ia supernovae., 7 pages, 7 figures, mn.sty submitted to mnras

We combine the 2MASS extended source catalogue and the 2dFGRS to produce an IR selected galaxy catalogue with 17,173 measured redshifts. We use this extensive dataset to estimate the J and K-band galaxy luminosity functions. The LFs are fairly well fit by Schechter functions with J: M*-5log h= -22.36+/-0.02, alpha= -0.93+/-0.04, Phi=0.0104+/-0.0016 h^3/Mpc^3 and K: M*-5log h= -23.44+/-0.03, alpha=-0.96+/-0.05, Phi=0.0108+/-0.0016 h^3/Mpc^3 (2MASS Kron magnitudes). These parameters assume a cosmological model with Omega=0.3 and Lambda=0.7. With datasets of this size, systematic rather than random errors are the dominant source of uncertainty in the determination of the LF. We carry out a careful investigation of possible systematic effects in our data. The surface brightness distribution of the sample shows no evidence that significant numbers of low surface brightness or compact galaxies are missed by the survey. We estimate the present-day distributions of B-K and J-K colours as a function of absolute magnitude and use models of the galaxy stellar populations, constrained by the observed optical and infrared colours, to infer the galaxy stellar mass function. Integrated over all galaxy masses, this yields a total mass fraction in stars (in units of the critical mass density) of Omega_*.h= (1.6+/-0.24)/10^3 for a Kennicutt IMF and Omega_*.h= (2.9+/-0.43)/10^3 for a Salpeter IMF. These values agree with those inferred from observational estimates of the star formation history of the universe provided that dust extinction corrections are modest., Typo in Table 3 Fixed (MNRAS 326 255). The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) is designed to measure redshifts for approximately 250000 galaxies. This paper describes the survey design, the spectroscopic observations, the redshift measurements and the survey database. The 2dFGRS uses the 2dF multi-fibre spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope, which is capable of observing 400 objects simultaneously over a 2-degree diameter field. The source catalogue for the survey is a revised and extended version of the APM galaxy catalogue, and the targets are galaxies with extinction-corrected magnitudes brighter than b_J=19.45. The main survey regions are two declination strips, one in the southern Galactic hemisphere spanning 80deg x 15deg around the SGP, and the other in the northern Galactic hemisphere spanning 75deg x 10deg along the celestial equator; in addition, there are 99 fields spread over the southern Galactic cap. The survey covers 2000 sq.deg and has a median depth of z=0.11. Adaptive tiling is used to give a highly uniform sampling rate of 93% over the whole survey region. Redshifts are measured from spectra covering 3600A-8000A at a two-pixel resolution of 9.0A and a median S/N of 13 per pixel. All redshift identifications are visually checked and assigned a quality parameter Q in the range 1-5; Q>=3 redshifts are 98.4% reliable and have an rms uncertainty of 85 km/s. The overall redshift completeness for Q>=3 redshifts is 91.8%, but this varies with magnitude from 99% for the brightest galaxies to 90% for objects at the survey limit. We present a version of the Fourier Bessel method first introduced by Fisher et al (1994) and Zaroubi et al (1994) with two extensions: (a) we amend the formalism to allow a generic galaxy weight which can be constant rather than the more conventional overweighting of galaxies at high distances, and (b) we correct for the masked zones by extrapolation of Fourier Bessel modes rather than by cloning from the galaxy distribution in neighbouring regions. We test the procedure extensively on N-body simulations and find that it gives generally unbiased results but that the reconstructed velocities tend to be overpredicted in high-density regions. Applying the formalism to the PSZz redshift catalog, we find that beta = 0.7 +/- 0.5 from a comparison of the reconstructed Local Group velocity to the CMB dipole. From an anisotropy test of the velocity field, we find that beta = 1 CDM models models normalized to the current cluster abundance can be excluded with 90% confidence. The density and velocity fields reconstructed agree with the fields found by Branchini et al (1998) in most points. We find a back-infall into the Great Attractor region (Hydra-Centaurus region) but tests suggest that this may be an artifact. We identify all the major clusters in our density field and confirm the existence of some previously identified possible ones., To appear in AJ (c Sept 99)

We investigate the baryon fraction in dark matter haloes formed in non-radiative gasdynamical simulations of the �CDM cosmogony. By combining a realisation of the Millennium \ud Simulation (Springel et al.) with a simulation of a smaller volume focussing on dwarf haloes, our study spans five decades in halo mass, from 1010 h−1 M⊙ to 1015 h−1 M⊙. We \ud find that the baryon fraction within the halo virial radius is typically 90% of the cosmic mean, with an rms scatter of 6%, independently of redshift and of halo mass down to the smallest resolved haloes. Our results show that, contrary to the proposal of Mo et al. (2005), previrialisation \ud gravitational heating is unable to prevent the collapse of gas within galactic and proto-galactic haloes, and confirm the need for non-gravitational feedback in order to reduce \ud the efficiency of gas cooling and star formation in dwarf galaxy haloes. Simulations including a simple photo-heatingmodel (where a gas temperature floor of Tfloor = 2×104 K is imposed from z = 11) confirm earlier suggestions that photoheating can only prevent the collapse of \ud baryons in systems with virial temperatures T200 . 2.2 Tfloor � 4.4 × 104 K (corresponding to a virial mass of M200 � 1010 h−1 M⊙ and a circular velocity of V200 � 35 km s−1). Photoheating may thus help regulate the formation of dwarf spheroidals and other galaxies at the extreme faint-end of the luminosity function, but it cannot, on its own, reconcile the abundance of sub-L⋆ galaxies with the vast number of dwarf haloes expected in the �CDM cosmogony. The lack of evolution or mass dependence seen in the baryon fraction augurs well for X-ray cluster studies that assume a universal and non-evolving baryon fraction to place constraints on cosmological parameters.

We present the public data release of halo and galaxy catalogues extracted from the EAGLE suite of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation. These simulations were performed with an enhanced version of the GADGET code that includes a modified hydrodynamics solver, time-step limiter and subgrid treatments of baryonic physics, such as stellar mass loss, element-by-element radiative cooling, star formation and feedback from star formation and black hole accretion. The simulation suite includes runs performed in volumes ranging from 25 to 100 comoving megaparsecs per side, with numerical resolution chosen to marginally resolve the Jeans mass of the gas at the star formation threshold. The free parameters of the subgrid models for feedback are calibrated to the redshift z=0 galaxy stellar mass function, galaxy sizes and black hole mass - stellar mass relation. The simulations have been shown to match a wide range of observations for present-day and higher-redshift galaxies. The raw particle data have been used to link galaxies across redshifts by creating merger trees. The indexing of the tree produces a simple way to connect a galaxy at one redshift to its progenitors at higher redshift and to identify its descendants at lower redshift. In this paper we present a relational database which we are making available for general use. A large number of properties of haloes and galaxies and their merger trees are stored in the database, including stellar masses, star formation rates, metallicities, photometric measurements and mock gri images. We present a model for the satellites of the Milky Way in which galaxy formation is followed using semi-analytic techniques applied to the six high-resolution N-body simulations of galactic haloes of the Aquarius project. The model, calculated using the GALFORM code, incorporates improved treatments of the relevant physics in the Λ cold dark matter cosmogony, particularly a self-consistent calculation of reionization by ultraviolet (UV) photons emitted by the forming galaxy population, including the progenitors of the central galaxy. Along the merger tree of each halo, the model calculates gas cooling (by Compton scattering off cosmic microwave background photons, molecular hydrogen and atomic processes), gas heating (from hydrogen photoionization and supernova energy), star formation and evolution. The evolution of the intergalactic medium is followed simultaneously with that of the galaxies. Star formation in the more massive progenitor subhaloes is suppressed primarily by supernova feedback, while for smaller subhaloes, it is suppressed primarily by photoionization due to external and internal sources. The model is constrained to match a wide range of properties of the present-day galaxy population as a whole, but at high redshift it requires an escape fraction of UV photons near unity in order to completely reionize the universe by redshift z≳ 8. In the most successful model, the local sources photoionize the pre-galactic region completely by z≃ 10. In addition to the luminosity function of Milky Way satellites, the model matches their observed luminosity–metallicity relation, their radial distribution and the inferred values of the mass within 300 pc, which in the models increase slowly but significantly with luminosity. There is a large variation in satellite properties from halo to halo, with the luminosity function, for example, varying by a factor of ∼2 among the six simulations.

We investigate the internal structure and density profiles of halos of mass $10^{10}-10^{14}~M_\odot$ in the Evolution and Assembly of Galaxies and their Environment (EAGLE) simulations. These follow the formation of galaxies in a $\Lambda$CDM Universe and include a treatment of the baryon physics thought to be relevant. The EAGLE simulations reproduce the observed present-day galaxy stellar mass function, as well as many other properties of the galaxy population as a function of time. We find significant differences between the masses of halos in the EAGLE simulations and in simulations that follow only the dark matter component. Nevertheless, halos are well described by the Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) density profile at radii larger than ~5% of the virial radius but, closer to the centre, the presence of stars can produce cuspier profiles. Central enhancements in the total mass profile are most important in halos of mass $10^{12}-10^{13}M_\odot$, where the stellar fraction peaks. Over the radial range where they are well resolved, the resulting galaxy rotation curves are in very good agreement with observational data for galaxies with stellar mass $M_*
