Abstract

The variable temperature and magnetic field of 31P and 1H in (HRe CO 4PPh3), (HRe CO 5) and (Re2- u-H 2 CO 8) show that scalar coupling contributions cause the relaxation process for P atoms attached to Re. The dipolar contribution of the Re isotopes significantly affects the longitudinal 1H and 31P relaxation times of the hydrides. The neutron diffraction structure distances in dipolar relaxations with Re can be used to determine the longitudinal relaxation times for the hydride samples.

Abstract

The relaxation properties of 31P in mono and polynuclear rhenium compounds were investigated. The results showed that 31P longitudinal relaxation time in P-donor ligands bound to rhenium is dominated by scalar coupling mechanism and depends on the value of 1J(Re-P). Comparison of the relaxation times can be utilized to assign the relative coordination geometry of the P-ligands.

Abstract

Copper indium gallium diselenide Cu(In1-xGax)Se2 (CIGS) nanocrystals were successfully synthesized by "heating-up" process. Monodisperse nanocrystals with an average diameter of 13.6 nm and a size deviation of3.4 nm were obtained. CIGS showed a chalcopyrite single phase with the desired stoichiometric composition. In this work, we report high quality semiconductor nanocrystal films obtained by non-vacuum, facile and cheap procedure of synthesis and deposition. Thin films of CIGS (~ 100 nm in thickness) were obtained by nanocrystal dispersion in non-polar organic solvent and by spry-deposition of the resulting ink onto ITO conductive glass substrate without any post annealing treatment. Nanocrystals and their thin films were characterized by several techniques, such as TEM (transmission electron microscopy), EDX (energy- dispersive X-ray spectroscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction), UV-vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy and photocurrent measurements. CIGS behave as light-absorbing layer in thin-film PV devices, the in solution-processability presented in this work and the possibility of large-scale synthesis enable the fabrication of thin films on light- weight and flexible plastic substrates, opening promising perspectives for producing cheaper and more efficient nanocrystal PV devices.

Abstract

The reaction of the unsaturated anion [Re3(mu-H)4(CO)10]- with LiMe at low temperature gives the unsaturated acyl derivative [Re3(mu-H)4(CO)9{C(Me)O}]2-, which is slowly converted, as the temperature is raised, into a saturated species in which a hydride ligand has migrated from the cluster to the acylic carbon atom to give [Re3(mu-H)3(CO)9{mu-3-eta-2-C(H)(Me)O}]2-. Variable temperature H-1-NMR spectroscopy has shown the existence of an unexpected equilibrium between the two anions.

Abstract

The reaction of the unsaturated anion [Re3(mu-H)4(CO)9(NCMe)]- with cyclohexylisocyanide gives the novel unsaturated anion [Re3(mu-H)4(CO)9(CNC6H11)]-. By reaction of this species with dimethylphenylphosphine a saturated compound is obtained, [Re3(mu-H)3(CO)9(mu-eta-2-C(H) = NC6H11)-(PMe2Ph)]-, containing a bridging formimidoyl ligand, Two isomers of this anion have been identified and the structure of one of them has been elucidated by X-ray analysis. The anion contains an isosceles triangle of Re atoms with two longer hydrogen-bridged edges [mean 3.255 angstrom] and one shorter edge [3.164(1) angstrom], doubly bridged by the formimidoyl ligand and the third hydride. The phosphine ligand is coordinated in the axial direction with respect to the Re3 plane, with a Re-P bond length of 2.454(7) angstrom.

Abstract

We report the results of an Italian multicenter study aimed at measuring retrospectively the lifetime amount and duration of alcohol consumption in non-selected consecutive patients with chronic liver disease. We used a standardized, reproducible questionnaire for measuring the lifetime daily alcohol intake (globally and separately for wine, beer and spirits), total alcohol intake and duration of alcohol consumption in 1,258 patients recruited from 17 medical centers. Wine intake contributed to the total alcohol intake in a proportion ranging from 44% to 85% throughout the centers. Spirits and beer intake contributed in smaller proportions (15% to 56%; and 3% to 27%, respectively). Males showed higher alcohol intake: those from northern-central Italy showed significantly higher intake than their southern-insular counterparts; of these, younger patients also showed a higher alcohol intake, due to a higher beer and spirit intake. Older patients showed higher intakes in southern-insular Italy, whereas the opposite was found in northern-central Italy. In this area, a longer duration of alcohol consumption was found, reflecting an earlier start in the use of alcohol. In conclusion, we believe that measuring alcohol intake on a wide series of patients in a multicenter study is feasible. This should stimulate gastroenterologists to approach the relationship between alcohol and liver disease using standardized and epidemiologically correct methods, and form the basis for well-designed case-control studies on a large scale, aimed at clarifying the risk of both hepatic and extrahepatic diseases associated with alcohol intake.

Abstract

The epidemiology of HDV infection in Italy was assessed in a retrospective study involving 1556 HBsAg chronic carriers on their first presentation at one of the 35 Liver Units in 1987. Total anti-HD was detected in 23.4% of HBsAg carriers and was significantly more frequent in southern than in northern Italy (26.6% vs. 19.1%, p less than 0.01). Age distribution showed that 73% of the anti-HD-positive subjects, but only 56% of the anti-HD-negative subjects, were under 40 years of age (p less than 0.01). Anti-HD prevalence increased with the severity of the liver disease from 3.8% in healthy carriers to 42.5% in cirrhosis. No geographical statistical difference was found among HBsAg healthy carriers or subjects with chronic persistent hepatitis (CPH), while among patients with chronic active hepatitis (CAH) or cirrhosis anti-HD prevalence was much higher in the south (p less than 0.01). The various potential risk factors were evaluated by multiple logistic regression analysis. HDV infection was independently related to young age, residence in the south, i.v. drug abuse, a large family and household contact with an anti-HD-positive carrier. No association was found with blood transfusion or male homosexuality. These findings confirm that HDV infection is endemic in Italy, particularly in some southern areas, where intrafamily contact probably at a young age may favour the spread of the infection.

Catalysts based on Pd and Pd-Au nanoparticles supported on N-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) are studied in the direct synthesis of H2O2. The initial selectivity in H2O2 formation is rather high (>95 %); however, there is a fast initial decrease during the first hour of time on stream. This was due to the initial presence of an organic capping agent (polyvinyl alcohol, which is used in the catalyst synthesis to obtain a high dispersion of metal particles). The removal of this capping agent during the reaction leads to a high mobility of metal nanoparticles. The high initial selectivity, when the capping agent is present, is due to small Pd terraces fully covered with chemisorbed O2 and limited H2 chemisorbed sites that consecutively hydrogenate the formed H2O2. The alloying of Pd with Au decreases the intrinsic reaction rate (per mg of Pd) and increases the selectivity in H2O2 formation, whereas Au alone is inactive. Au also has a minor effect on the consecutive conversion of H2O2 in both the decomposition and hydrogenolysis (in the presence of H2 only) reactions. These results suggest that Au does not block the unselective sites of H2O2 conversion but mainly creates isolated small terraces of Pd that can limit H2 chemisorption sites, which thus leads to higher selectivity to H2O2 under given reaction conditions. Abstract

[M′′LnCl2] (n = 1,2) (M′′= Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Hg) (L = adenine, adenosine) compounds were synthesized and the magnetic, electronic and vibrational properties of adenosine derivatives were considered in comparison with those of adenine complexes. It was found that the ligand field symmetry is distorted tetrahedral in cobalt, zinc compounds and in CuLCl2; distorted octahedral in Ni, Cd, Hg compounds and in CuL2Cl2. Sugar moiety of adenosine is not implied in the coordination to the metal center. Distortions from regular symmetries were recognized by ESR measurements and confirmed by vibrational analysis; it resulted an higher distorting power of adenosine than of adenine. Both monodentate and bridging N(3)-N(9) or N(1)-N(7) coordination were discussed. The MN bond strength resulted higher for bridged coordination. ESR sensitive change of spin state were observed in CoL2Cl2 compounds. Vibrational measurements on purine absorption modes suggest that the ligand is not strongly perturbed by the metal coordination. © 1981.

Abstract

Mature T lymphocyte concentrations are reduced, null cell concentrations are increased, and Fc receptor bearing (B and K) lymphocyte concentrations are normal, in the peripheral blood of patients with chronic hepatocellular or cholestatic liver disease. Some null cells can be stimulated by either thymosin or levamisole to form rosettes with sheep erythrocytes. These changes are present in viral, alcohol associated and `autoimmune' liver disease and are therefore probably secondary phenomena relating to liver damage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Different routes to the new family of cluster compounds [Re3(μ-H)3(CO)12-n(NCMe)n] (n = 1-3), containing substitution labile nitrile ligands, are described. The interconversions within the members of the family have been investigated and the stepwise replacement of the MeCn groups with CO has been demonstrated. The reaction of [Re3(μ-H)3(CO)12] with Me3NO in controlled ratios (1:1 or 1:2) for progressive decarbonylation, in the presence of nitrile, is found not be selective, and leads to mixtures of substituted derivatives. On the contrary with a 1:3 ratio the trisubstituted derivative is obtained quantitatively. The crystal structures of the derivatives with n = 1 (1) and 3(3) are reported. Compound (1) crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n, with a = 8.417(2), b = 15.282(4), c = 16.540(4) Å, β = 97.70(2)°, and Z = 4. Compound (3) gives triclinic crystals, space group P1, with a = 8.761(2), b = 9.403(2), c = 15.079(3) Å, α = 92.45(2), β = 94.02(2), γ = 108.38(2)°, and Z = 2. The structures were solved by Patterson and Fourier methods, and refined by full-matrix least squares on the basisi of 1 121(1) and 3129(3) significant counter data, to final values of the conventional R index of 0.035(1) and 0.019(3), respectively. Both structures contain an almost equilateral Re3 triangle, with all the edges bridged by hydride ligands. The mean values of the Re-Re bonds are 3.258 and 3.284 Å for compounds (1) and (3), respectively. The acetonitrile ligands always occupy axial position. N.m.r. data in solution have shown the presence of only one isomer for each compound.

Abstract

Variable-temperature 13C NMR spectroscopy, 1D SPT, and 2D EXSY experiments have been used to investigate the fluxionality of the triangular cluster anion [Re3(μ-H)3(μ-η2-NC5H4)(CO)10]-. The 13CO resonances have been assigned through 1H−13C 2D HMQC and 13C 2D DQF-COSY experiments and through the measurement of the 13CO longitudinal relaxation times. The exchange pattern observed in the 13C 2D EXSY experiments proved the occurrence of a synchronous axial−axial and equatorial−equatorial carbonyl exchange on the apical metal. The rate constants at 303 and 313 K compare well with those previously measured, through 1H NMR spectroscopy, for the exchange of the two hydrides bridging the lateral edges of the cluster. The rigid rotation of the whole apical [H2Re(CO)4] moiety around an axis passing through the midpoint of the basal bimetallic fragment is in agreement with these results. A deuterium kinetic isotope effect kH/kD = 1.45(24) has been measured through 1H and 2H 2D EXSY experiments, supporting the involvement of the hydrides in the rate-determining step of the exchange process.

Abstract

We studied the prevalence of hepatitis B virus markers (HBV) in 170 patients with chronic liver disease and increased alcohol intake and in 120 normal subjects, sex and age matched. Markers of past HBV infection were significantly higher in the patients while no significant difference was found according to the markers of active viral replication. From these data alcohol seems to represent a risk factor for HBV infection: vaccination against HBV is therefore useful in alcoholic patients.
