In this paper we share the experience of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) National Solar Observatory (NSO) scientists, educators and public outreach officers organizing an eclipse viewing party at a sports complex stadium on the US/Mexico border in Eagle Pass, TX in collaboration with educators from Eagle Pass and Uvalde areas. JWST, despite not being designed to observe astrophysical phenomena that vary on rapid time scales, can be an unparalleled tool for such studies. If timing systematics can be controlled, JWST will be able to open up the sub-second infrared timescale regime. Rapid time-domain studies, such as lag measurements in accreting compact objects and Solar System stellar occultations, require both precise inter-frame timing and knowing when a time series begins to an absolute accuracy significantly below 1s. In this work we present two long-duration observations of the deeply eclipsing double white dwarf system ZTF J153932.16+502738.8, which we use as a natural timing calibrator to measure the absolute timing accuracy of JWST's clock. From our two epochs, we measure an average clock accuracy of $0.12\pm0.06$s, implying that JWST can be used for sub-second time-resolution studies down to the $\sim100$ms level, a factor $\sim5$ improvement upon the pre-launch clock accuracy requirement. We present simultaneous X-ray and spectral ultraviolet (UV) observations of strikingly-coherent oscillations in emission from a coronal looptop and fan structure, during the impulsive phase of a long-duration M-class solar flare. The 50 s oscillations are observed near in-phase by Solar Orbiter/STIX, GOES, and IRIS Fe XXI intensity, Doppler and non-thermal velocity. For over 5 minutes of their approximate 35 minute duration, the oscillations are so periodic (2-sigma above the power law background), that they are better described as 'periodic pulsations' than the more-widely documented 'quasi-periodic pulsations' often observed during solar flares. By combining time-series analysis of the the multi-instrument datasets with comparison to MHD simulations, we attribute the oscillations to the magnetic tuning fork in the flare looptop-fan region, and betatron acceleration within the lower-altitude flare loops. These interpretations are possible due to the introduced 'Sliding Raster Method' (SliRM) for analysis of slit spectrometer (e.g. IRIS) raster data, to increase the temporal cadence of the observations at the expense of spatial information., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, (+1 page, 2 figure appendix); accepted for publication to ApJ

GD1400AB was one of the first known white dwarf$+$brown dwarf binaries, and is the only one of these systems where the white dwarf is a ZZ Ceti pulsator. Here we present both radial velocity measurements and time series photometry, analysing both the white dwarf pulsations and the effects of irradiation on the brown dwarf. We find the brightness temperatures of 1760$/pm$10 K for the night side and 1860$/pm$10 K for the day side indicate the brown dwarf is hotter than spectra have previously suggested, although brightness temperatures calculated using a larger radius for the brown dwarf are consistent with previously determined spectral types. The complexities of fabrication techniques and the demand for high precision have posed significant challenges in the mass production of augmented reality (AR) waveguide combiners. Leveraging the capabilities of Polyjet 3D printing techniques, we have developed a cost-effective method for fabricating liquid geometric waveguide combiners for AR applications, using silicone oil as the medium. During the design phase, we optimized the structure of the waveguide combiner to facilitate easier fabrication. Our proposed method simplifies the production process by removing the need for complicated steps like dicing, layer bonding, and polishing, which are usually involved in traditional manufacturing techniques. We conducted optical simulations and developed a prototype using our patented fabrication method, which successfully demonstrated the integration of virtual images with the real-world environment, thereby confirming its feasibility and potential for cost-effective mass production.

Solar flares exhibit complex variations in elemental abundances compared to photospheric values. We examine the spatial and temporal evolution of coronal abundances in the X8.2 flare on 2017 September 10, aiming to interpret the often observed high first ionization potential (FIP) bias at loop tops and provide insights into differences between spatially resolved and Sun-as-a-star flare composition measurements. We analyze 12 Hinode/EIS raster scans spanning 3.5 hours, employing Ca XIV 193.87 A/Ar XIV 194.40 A and Fe XVI 262.98 A/S XIII 256.69 A composition diagnostics to derive FIP bias values. Both diagnostics consistently show that flare loop tops maintain high FIP bias values of >2-6, with peak phase values exceeding 4, over the extended duration, while footpoints exhibit photospheric FIP bias of ~1. We propose that this variation arises from a combination of two distinct processes: high FIP bias plasma downflows from the plasma sheet confined to loop tops, and chromospheric evaporation filling the loop footpoints with low FIP bias plasma. Mixing between these two sources produces the observed gradient. Our observations show that the localized high FIP bias signature at loop tops is likely diluted by the bright footpoint emission in spatially averaged measurements. The spatially resolved spectroscopic observations enabled by EIS prove critical for revealing this complex abundance variation in loops. Furthermore, our observations show clear evidence that the origin of hot flare plasma in flaring loops consists of a combination of both directly heated plasma in the corona and from ablated chromospheric material; and our results provide valuable insights into the formation and composition of loop top brightenings, also known as EUV knots, which are a common feature at the tops of flare loops., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, 1 table. We present Gemini near-infrared integral field spectrograph (NIFS) K-band observations of the central 400 pc of NGC 1266, a nearby (D$\approx$30 Mpc) post-starburst galaxy with a powerful multi-phase outflow and a shocked ISM. We detect 7 H$_2$ ro-vibrational emission lines excited thermally to $T$$\sim$2000 K, and weak Br$\gamma$ emission, consistent with a fast C-shock. With these bright H$_2$ lines, we observe the spatial structure of the shock with an unambiguous tracer for the first time. The Br$\gamma$ emission is concentrated in the central $\lesssim$100 pc, indicating that any remaining star-formation in NGC 1266 is in the nucleus while the surrounding cold molecular gas has little on-going star-formation. Though it is unclear what fraction of this Br$\gamma$ emission is from star-formation or the AGN, assuming it is entirely due to star-formation we measure an instantaneous star-formation rate of 0.7 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, though the star-formation rate may be significantly higher in the presence of additional extinction. NGC 1266 provides a unique laboratory to study the complex interactions between AGN, outflows, shocks, and star-formation, all of which are necessary to unravel the evolution of the post-starburst phase., Comment: ApJ accepted

Due to their short orbital periods and relatively high flux ratios, irradiated brown dwarfs in binaries with white dwarfs offer better opportunities to study irradiated atmospheres than hot Jupiters, which have lower planet-to-star flux ratios. WD1032+011 is an eclipsing, tidally locked white dwarf-brown dwarf binary with a 9950 K white dwarf orbited by a 69.7 M$_{Jup}$ brown dwarf in a 0.09 day orbit. We present time-resolved Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 spectrophotometric data of WD1032+011. We isolate the phase-dependent spectra of WD1032+011B, finding a 210 K difference in brightness temperature between the dayside and nightside. The spectral type of the brown dwarf is identified as L1 peculiar, with atmospheric retrievals and comparison to field brown dwarfs showing evidence for a cloud-free atmosphere. The retrieved temperature of the dayside is $1748^{+66}_{-67}$ K, with a nightside temperature of $1555^{+76}_{-62}$ K, showing an irradiation-driven temperature contrast coupled with inefficient heat redistribution from the dayside to the nightside. The brown dwarf radius is inflated, likely due to the constant irradiation from the white dwarf, making it the only known inflated brown dwarf in an eclipsing white dwarf-brown dwarf binary., Comment: 20 pages, 23 figures. Forming oral models capable of understanding the complete dynamics of the oral cavity is vital across research areas such as speech correction, designing foods for the aging population, and dentistry. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technologies, capable of capturing oral data essential for creating such detailed representations, offer a powerful tool for illustrating articulatory dynamics. However, its real-time application is hindered by expense and expertise requirements. Ever advancing generative AI approaches present themselves as a way to address this barrier by leveraging multi-modal approaches for generating pseudo-MRI views. Nonetheless, this immediately sparks ethical concerns regarding the utilisation of a technology with the capability to produce MRIs from facial observations. This paper explores the ethical implications of external-to-internal correlation modeling (E2ICM). E2ICM utilises facial movements to infer internal configurations and provides a cost-effective supporting technology for MRI. In this preliminary work, we employ Pix2PixGAN to generate pseudo-MRI views from external articulatory data, demonstrating the feasibility of this approach. Ethical considerations concerning privacy, consent, and potential misuse, which are fundamental to our examination of this innovative methodology, are discussed as a result of this experimentation.

A novel method to reconstruct the energy of hadronic showers in the CMS High Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL) is presented. The HGCAL is a sampling calorimeter with very fine transverse and longitudinal granularity. The active media are silicon sensors and scintillator tiles readout by SiPMs and the absorbers are a combination of lead and Cu/CuW in the electromagnetic section, and steel in the hadronic section. The shower reconstruction method is based on graph neural networks and it makes use of a dynamic reduction network architecture. It is shown that the algorithm is able to capture and mitigate the main effects that normally hinder the reconstruction of hadronic showers using classical reconstruction methods, by compensating for fluctuations in the multiplicity, energy, and spatial distributions of the shower's constituents. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated using test beam data collected in 2018 prototype of the CMS HGCAL accompanied by a section of the CALICE AHCAL prototype. Planets orbiting binary systems are relatively unexplored compared to those around single stars. Detections of circumbinary planets and planetary systems offer a first detailed view into our understanding of circumbinary planet formation and dynamical evolution. The BEBOP (Binaries Escorted by Orbiting Planets) radial velocity survey plays a special role in this adventure as it focuses on eclipsing single-lined binaries with an FGK dwarf primary and M dwarf secondary allowing for the highest-radial velocity precision using the HARPS and SOPHIE spectrographs. We obtained 4512 high-resolution spectra for the 179 targets in the BEBOP survey which we used to derive the stellar atmospheric parameters using both equivalent widths and spectral synthesis. We furthermore derive stellar masses, radii, and ages for all targets. With this work, we present the first homogeneous catalogue of precise stellar parameters for these eclipsing single-lined binaries., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

In the past five years, six quasi-periodic X-ray eruption (QPE) sources have been discovered in the nuclei of nearby galaxies. Their origin remains an open question. We present MUSE integral field spectroscopy of five QPE host galaxies to characterize their properties. We find that 3/5 galaxies host extended emission line regions (EELRs) up to 10 kpc in size. The EELRs are photo-ionized by a non-stellar continuum, but the current nuclear luminosity is insufficient to power the observed emission lines. The EELRs are decoupled from the stars both kinematically and in projected sky position, and the low velocities and velocity dispersions ($<$ 100 km s$^{-1}$ and $\lesssim 75$ km s$^{-1}$ respectively) are inconsistent with being AGN- or shock-driven. The origin of the EELRs is likely a previous phase of nuclear activity. The QPE host galaxy properties are strikingly similar to those of tidal disruption events (Wevers et al. submitted). The preference for a very short-lived (the typical EELR lifetime is $\sim$15000 years), gas-rich phase where the nucleus has recently faded significantly suggests that TDEs and QPEs may share a common formation channel, disfavoring AGN accretion disk instabilities as the origin of QPEs. In the assumption that QPEs are related to extreme mass ratio inspiral systems (EMRIs; stellar-mass objects on bound orbits about massive black holes), the high incidence of EELRs and recently faded nuclear activity can be used to aid in the localization of the host galaxies of EMRIs discovered by low frequency gravitational wave observatories., Comment: Submitted to ApJ Letters. We report the discovery of an extended emission line region (EELR) in MUSE observations of Markarian 950, a nearby ($z=0.01628$) post-starburst (PSB) galaxy that hosted the tidal disruption event (TDE) iPTF-16fnl. The EELR requires a non-stellar ionizing continuum with a luminosity L$_{\rm ion, min} \gtrsim 10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$, inconsistent with the current weak state (L$_{\rm IR,AGN} < 2.5 \times 10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$) of the galactic nucleus. The ionized gas has low velocity ($\sim$-50 km s$^{-1}$) and low turbulence ($\sigma_{\rm gas} \lesssim$ 50 km s$^{-1}$), and is kinematically decoupled from the stellar motions, indicating that the gas kinematics are not AGN driven. Markarian 950 is the third post-starburst galaxy to host a weak nuclear ionizing source as well as an EELR and a TDE. The overall properties of these three galaxies, including the kinematics and accretion history, are unusual but strikingly similar. We estimate that the incidence of EELRs in PSB-TDE hosts is a factor of $\sim 10 \times$ higher than in other PSB galaxies. This suggests that a gas-rich post-merger environment is a key ingredient in driving elevated TDE rates. Based on the current observations, we cannot rule out that the EELRs may be powered through an elevated TDE rate in these galaxies. If the EELRs are not TDE-powered, the presence of intermittent AGN activity, and in particular the fading of the AGN, may be associated with an increased TDE rate and/or an increased rate of detecting TDEs., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters. From 31 Earth-based and three Voyager 2 occultations spanning 1977--2006, we determine the orbital elements of the nine main Uranian rings with typical RMS residuals of 0.2 -- 0.4 km and 1-$\sigma$ errors in $a, ae,$ and $a\sin i$ of order 0.1 km, registered on an absolute radius scale accurate to 0.2 km at the 2-$\sigma$ level. The $\lambda$ ring shows more substantial scatter. In addition to the free modes $m=0$ in the $\gamma$ ring and $m=2$ in the $\delta$ ring, we find two additional outer Lindblad resonance (OLR) modes ($m=-1$ and $-2$) and a possible $m=3$ inner Lindblad resonance (ILR) mode in the $\gamma$ ring. No normal modes are detected for rings 6, 5, 4, $\alpha$, or $\beta$. Five normal modes are forced by small moonlets: the 3:2 inner ILR of Cressida with the $\eta$ ring, the 6:5 ILR of Ophelia with the $\gamma$ ring, the 23:22 ILR of Cordelia with the $\delta$ ring, the 14:13 ILR of Ophelia with the outer edge of the $\epsilon$ ring, and the counterpart 25:24 OLR of Cordelia with the ring's inner edge. We determine the width-radius relations for nearly all of the detected mode. We find no convincing evidence for librations of any of the rings. The Uranus pole direction at epoch TDB 1986 Jan 19 12:00 is $\alpha_P=77.311327\pm 0.000141^\circ$ and $\delta_P=15.172795\pm0.000618^\circ$. We determine the zonal gravitational coefficients $J_2=(3509.291\pm0.412)\times 10^{-6}, J_4=(-35.522\pm0.466)\times10^{-6}$, and $J_6$ fixed at $0.5\times 10^{-6}$, with a correlation coefficient $\rho(J_2,J_4)=0.9861$, for a reference radius $R=$25559 km. From the amplitudes and resonance radii of normal modes forced by moonlets, we determine the masses of Cressida, Cordelia, and Ophelia. Their estimated densities decrease systematically with increasing orbital radius and generally follow the radial trend of the Roche critical density for a shape parameter $\gamma=1.6$., Comment: 94 pages, 53 figures

This paper demonstrates the undecidability of a number of logics with quantification over public announcements: arbitrary public announcement logic (APAL), group announcement logic (GAL), and coalition announcement logic (CAL). In APAL we consider the informative consequences of any announcement, in GAL we consider the informative consequences of a group of agents (this group may be a proper subset of the set of all agents) all of which are simultaneously (and publicly) making known announcements. So this is more restrictive than APAL. Finally, CAL is as GAL except that we now quantify over anything the agents not in that group may announce simultaneously as well. The logic CAL therefore has some features of game logic and of ATL. We show that when there are multiple agents in the language, the satisfiability problem is undecidable for APAL, GAL, and CAL. In the single agent case, the satisfiability problem is decidable for all three logics. Relativistic magnetic turbulence has been proposed as a process for producing nonthermal particles in high-energy astrophysics. The particle energization may be contributed by both magnetic reconnection and turbulent fluctuations, but their interplay is poorly understood. It has been suggested that during magnetic reconnection the parallel electric field dominates the particle acceleration up to the lower bound of the power-law particle spectrum, but recent studies show that electric fields perpendicular to the magnetic field can play an important, if not dominant role. In this study, we carry out fully kinetic particle-in-cell simulations of magnetically dominated decaying turbulence in a relativistic pair plasma. For a fixed magnetization parameter $\sigma_0 = 20$, we find that the injection energy~$\varepsilon_{\rm inj}$ converges with increasing domain size to~$\varepsilon_{\rm inj} \simeq 10 \, m_ec^2$. In contrast, the power-law index, the cut-off energy, and the power-law extent increase steadily with domain size. We trace a large number of particles and evaluate the contributions of the work done by the parallel ($W_\parallel$) and perpendicular ($W_\perp$) electric fields during both the injection phase and the post-injection phase. We find that during the injection phase, the $W_\perp$ contribution increases with domain size, suggesting that it may eventually dominate injection for a sufficiently large domain. In contrast, both components contribute equally during the post-injection phase, insensitive to the domain size. For high energy ($\varepsilon \gg \varepsilon_{\rm inj}$) particles, $W_\perp$ dominates the subsequent energization. The recent release of the Apple Vision Pro has reignited interest in the metaverse, showcasing the intensified efforts of technology giants in developing platforms and devices to facilitate its growth. As the metaverse continues to proliferate, it is foreseeable that everyday environments will become increasingly saturated with its presence. Consequently, uncovering links to these metaverse items will be a crucial first step to interacting with this new augmented world. In this paper, we address the problem of establishing connections with virtual worlds within everyday environments, especially those that are not readily discernible through direct visual inspection. We introduce a vision-based approach leveraging Artcode visual markers to uncover hidden metaverse links embedded in our ambient surroundings. This approach progressively localises the access points to the metaverse, transitioning from coarse to fine localisation, thus facilitating an exploratory interaction process. We present new results on PHL 5038AB, a widely separated binary system composed of a white dwarf and a brown dwarf, refining the white and brown dwarf parameters and determining the binary separation to be $66^{+12}_{-24}$~AU. New spectra of the white dwarf show calcium absorption lines suggesting the hydrogen-rich atmosphere is weakly polluted, inferring the presence of planetesimals in the system, which we determine are in an S-type orbit around the white dwarf in orbits closer than 17-32 AU. We do not detect any infrared excess that would indicate the presence of a disc, suggesting all dust present has either been totally accreted or is optically thin. In this system, we suggest the metal pollution in the white dwarf atmosphere can be directly attributed to the presence of the brown dwarf companion disrupting the orbits of planetesimals within the system., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables. Star-forming galaxies can reach quiescence via rapid transition through merger-triggered starbursts that consequently affect both their kinematics and star formation rates. In this work, we analyze the spatially-resolved kinematics of 92 post-starburst galaxies (PSBs) with data from the MaNGA survey and place them in context with early-type galaxies (ETGs) to study the impact of merger history on galaxy kinematics. We measure the specific angular momentum to characterize them as slow or fast rotators. We find that the MaNGA PSB sample has $5\%$ slow rotators, which is less than the $14\%$ slow rotators in the ATLAS$^{3D}$ ETG sample and $22\%$ slow rotators in the MaNGA ETGs. The PSBs have lower specific angular momentum than the star-forming galaxies (SFs) and a greater fraction of slow rotators. This implies that for the PSBs to evolve into the ETGs, they must still lose some angular momentum. While ETGs with higher stellar mass tend to be slow rotators, PSBs do not follow this trend. We find significant correlations between specific angular momentum and mass-weighted age for the SF and ETG samples, but do not see any significant trends within the short PSB phase. These results indicate that significant evolution in angular momentum must continue to take place as the galaxy ages after the PSB phase. For PSBs to evolve directly into ETGs, they must undergo dry mergers to shed excess angular momentum without causing further epochs of star formation., Comment: submitted to AAS journals

Scoliosis, a prevalent condition characterized by abnormal spinal curvature leading to deformity, requires precise assessment methods for effective diagnosis and management. The Cobb angle is a widely used scoliosis quantification method that measures the degree of curvature between the tilted vertebrae. Yet, manual measuring of Cobb angles is time-consuming and labor-intensive, fraught with significant interobserver and intraobserver variability. To address these challenges and the lack of interpretability found in certain existing automated methods, we have created fully automated software that not only precisely measures the Cobb angle but also provides clear visualizations of these measurements. This software integrates deep neural network-based spine region detection and segmentation, spine centerline identification, pinpointing the most significantly tilted vertebrae, and direct visualization of Cobb angles on the original images. Upon comparison with the assessments of 7 expert readers, our algorithm exhibited a mean deviation in Cobb angle measurements of 4.17 degrees, notably surpassing the manual approach's average intra-reader discrepancy of 5.16 degrees. The algorithm also achieved intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC) exceeding 0.96 and Pearson correlation coefficients above 0.944, reflecting robust agreement with expert assessments and superior measurement reliability. Through the comprehensive reader study and statistical analysis, we believe this algorithm not only ensures a higher consensus with expert readers but also enhances interpretability and reproducibility during assessments. It holds significant promise for clinical application, potentially aiding physicians in more accurate scoliosis assessment and diagnosis, thereby improving patient care., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

Mass production of augmented reality (AR) waveguides has been challenging due to the intricate nature of the fabrication technique and the high precision required for its optical characteristics. In this paper, we have presented a novel and low-cost approach for fabricating geometric optical waveguides designed for AR applications utilizing 3D printing techniques. To strike a balance between optical performance and fabrication feasibility, we have optimized the conventional geometric waveguide design to facilitate easier fabrication. It is worth noting that our proposed method does not require molding, dicing, and post-surface polishing after printing. A prototype based on this method has been successfully fabricated, showing the immersion between the virtual image and the real-world scene. The proposed method has great potential for adaptation to mass production in various AR applications.

We propose a novel Spatio-Temporal Graph Neural Network empowered trend analysis approach (ST-GTrend) to perform fleet-level performance degradation analysis for Photovoltaic (PV) power networks. PV power stations have become an integral component to the global sustainable energy production landscape. Accurately estimating the performance of PV systems is critical to their feasibility as a power generation technology and as a financial asset. One of the most challenging problems in assessing the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) of a PV system is to understand and estimate the long-term Performance Loss Rate (PLR) for large fleets of PV inverters. ST-GTrend integrates spatio-temporal coherence and graph attention to separate PLR as a long-term "aging" trend from multiple fluctuation terms in the PV input data. To cope with diverse degradation patterns in timeseries, ST-GTrend adopts a paralleled graph autoencoder array to extract aging and fluctuation terms simultaneously. ST-GTrend imposes flatness and smoothness regularization to ensure the disentanglement between aging and fluctuation. To scale the analysis to large PV systems, we also introduce Para-GTrend, a parallel algorithm to accelerate the training and inference of ST-GTrend. We have evaluated ST-GTrend on three large-scale PV datasets, spanning a time period of 10 years. Our results show that ST-GTrend reduces Mean Absolute Percent Error (MAPE) and Euclidean Distances by 34.74% and 33.66% compared to the SOTA methods. Our results demonstrate that Para-GTrend can speed up ST-GTrend by up to 7.92 times. We further verify the generality and effectiveness of ST-GTrend for trend analysis using financial and economic datasets.

We report striking Doppler velocity gradients observed during the well-observed September 10th 2017 solar flare, and argue that they are consistent with the presence of an above-the-looptop termination shock beneath the flare current sheet. Observations from the Hinode Extreme-ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) measure plasma sheet Doppler shifts up to 35 km/s during the late-phase of the event. By comparing these line-of-sight flows with plane-of-sky measurements, we calculate total velocity downflows of 200+ km/s, orientated 6-10{\deg} out of the plane of sky. The observed velocities drop rapidly at the base of the hot plasma sheet seen in extreme ultraviolet, consistent with simulated velocity profiles predicted by our 2.5D magnetohydrodynamics model that features a termination shock at the same location. Finally, the striking velocity deceleration aligns spatially with the suppression of Fe XXIV non-thermal velocities, and a 35--50 keV hard X-ray looptop source observed by the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI). Early detection of melanoma, a potentially lethal type of skin cancer with high prevalence worldwide, improves patient prognosis. In retrospective studies, artificial intelligence (AI) has proven to be helpful for enhancing melanoma detection. However, there are few prospective studies confirming these promising results. Existing studies are limited by low sample sizes, too homogenous datasets, or lack of inclusion of rare melanoma subtypes, preventing a fair and thorough evaluation of AI and its generalizability, a crucial aspect for its application in the clinical setting. Therefore, we assessed 'All Data are Ext' (ADAE), an established open-source ensemble algorithm for detecting melanomas, by comparing its diagnostic accuracy to that of dermatologists on a prospectively collected, external, heterogeneous test set comprising eight distinct hospitals, four different camera setups, rare melanoma subtypes, and special anatomical sites. We advanced the algorithm with real test-time augmentation (R-TTA, i.e. providing real photographs of lesions taken from multiple angles and averaging the predictions), and evaluated its generalization capabilities. Overall, the AI showed higher balanced accuracy than dermatologists (0.798, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.779-0.814 vs. 0.781, 95% CI 0.760-0.802; p<0.001), obtaining a higher sensitivity (0.921, 95% CI 0.900- 0.942 vs. 0.734, 95% CI 0.701-0.770; p<0.001) at the cost of a lower specificity (0.673, 95% CI 0.641-0.702 vs. 0.828, 95% CI 0.804-0.852; p<0.001). As the algorithm exhibited a significant performance advantage on our heterogeneous dataset exclusively comprising melanoma-suspicious lesions, AI may offer the potential to support dermatologists particularly in diagnosing challenging cases.

We present ALMA observations of two dense gas tracers, HCN(1-0) and HCO$^{+}$(1-0), for three galaxies in the green valley and two galaxies on the star-forming main sequence with comparable molecular gas fractions as traced by the CO(1-0) emissions, selected from the ALMaQUEST survey. We investigate whether the deficit of molecular gas star formation efficiency (SFE$_{\rm mol}$) that leads to the low specific star formation rate in these green valley galaxies is due to a lack of dense gas (characterized by the dense gas fraction $f_{\rm dense}$) or the low star formation efficiency of dense gas (SFE$_{\rm dense}$). We find that SFE$_{\rm mol}$ as traced by the CO emissions, when considering both star-forming and retired spaxels together, is tightly correlated with SFE$_{\rm dense}$ and depends only weakly on $f_{\rm dense}$. The specific star formation rate (sSFR) on kpc scales is primarily driven by SFE$_{\rm mol}$ and SFE$_{\rm dense}$, followed by the dependence on $f_{\rm mol}$, and is least correlated with $f_{\rm dense}$ or the dense-to-stellar mass ratio ($R_{\rm dense}$). When compared with other works in the literature, we find that our green valley sample shows lower global SFE$_{\rm mol}$ as well as lower SFE$_{\rm dense}$ while exhibiting similar dense gas fractions when compared to star-forming and starburst galaxies. We conclude that the star formation of the 3 green valley galaxies with a normal abundance of molecular gas is suppressed mainly due to the reduced SFE$_{\rm dense}$ rather than the lack of dense gas., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures, ApJ accepted
